Wrexham pub renamed Pubby McPubface

Landlord Peter Daniels has relaunched his pub with a nod to the Boaty McBoatface campaign to make it 'stand out from the crowd'

A landlord is aiming to get thirsty punters in with a quirky new name - Pubby McPubface.

Peter Daniels and his son Che came up with the idea to call the Newbridge Arms, in Newbridge, Wrexham, something completely different, before it re-opened following a refurbishment.

It was partly inspired by the sensational social media campaign to name a multi-million pound research vessel Boaty McBoatface.

That campaign ultimately failed, despite massive support and was eventually named RRS Sir David Attenborough after the famous wildlife broadcaster.

But Peter is hoping the new pub name will help the watering hole sail to success, rather than sink without a trace.

The 55 year-old, who has been in the pub business for more than two decades, said: “We had a big interior refurbishment over Christmas and we decided, a new refurb, a new revamp, a new name.

“My son Che decided to go on a website that deals with high brow pubs in London, coming up with names for your bar and one that popped up was Pubby McPubface.

“We Googled it and nobody else had it. We are now the only ones in the British Isles with the name Pubby McPubface. There one or two considering doing it. We just wanted to stand out from the crowd.”

Peter said he was a staunch supporter of the Boaty McBoatface campaign.

“But it didn’t get off the ground and sunk before it left port and we decided that we would pay homage to Boaty McBoatface to a certain degree in memory of the boat that never got launched,” he said.

He added: “It didn’t seem right that 70%-80% of the people voted for the name but it got crawled upon by the bigwigs who decided to call it Sir David Attenborough.”

Peter was pleased with the reaction and said they now had followers on their website and Facebook page from Cyprus, Lanzarote, mainland Spain and France.

“It’s just gone nuts,” said Peter: “We even had a police officer taking a photo of the sign.”
