Rajeev Rastogi and Kyoesek Shim of Bell Labs present a very nice approach to image search based on wavelets over part of an image. The basic idea was to model each image by several wavelets and then to declare two images to be similar if they have several overlapping areas with similar wavelets. The experiments are promising and the technique admits of many variants that should be explored.
