New Delhi: A tanker carrying Iranian crude oil, which had earlier indicated Gujarat as its destination, has changed course mid-voyage and is now headed to China. The shipment would have marked India’s first import of Iranian oil in nearly seven years.

The Aframax tanker Ping Shun, built in 2002 and sanctioned by the United States in 2025, is currently signalling Dongying in China as its destination instead of Vadinar in Gujarat, according to ship-tracking firm Kpler.

However, there is no certainty that the destination displayed through the vessel’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) reflects its final port of call, as such signals can change during transit.

Had the cargo reached India, it would have been the first import of Iranian crude since 2019. Indian refiners have recently been exploring opportunities to procure limited Iranian oil cargoes following a temporary sanctions waiver by Washington.

According to reports, the diversion appears to be linked to payment-related concerns. Sellers are reportedly tightening terms, shifting away from earlier credit periods of 30–60 days towards upfront or near-term payments. The identities of the buyer and seller, however, remain unclear.

Vadinar houses a 20-million-tonne-per-year refinery operated by Nayara Energy, backed by Russian oil major Rosneft.

Meanwhile, India’s oil ministry has maintained that any decision on resuming Iranian oil imports will depend on techno-commercial viability.

Historically, India was a significant importer of Iranian crude, benefiting from refinery compatibility and favourable pricing. However, imports came to a halt in May 2019 following tighter US sanctions, with supplies replaced by crude from the Middle East, the United States and other sources.

The Ping Shun is estimated to be carrying around 600,000 barrels of oil loaded from Kharg Island around March 4, with an earlier expected arrival in Vadinar on April 4. DeshGujarat

The project is estimated to cost ₹132.51 crore.

The proposal was recently appraised by the Delegated Investment Board (DIB) in a meeting chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The revised project cost was examined to ensure compliance with modern safety standards and technical specifications.

The proposed ROB is a critical infrastructure intervention designed to address existing logistical constraints at the port. By enabling seamless movement across the rail crossing, the project will eliminate bottlenecks, ensure an uninterrupted flow of port-bound cargo, and significantly improve operational efficiency at Deendayal Port. Upon completion, it is expected to reduce congestion, facilitate faster cargo evacuation, and strengthen the country’s overall maritime logistics chain.

The ROB at Deendayal Port will remove critical bottlenecks, improve cargo movement, and strengthen India’s logistics efficiency. Aligned with the Sagarmala Programme and PM Gati Shakti, we are building integrated infrastructure that accelerates trade, enhances safety, and supports economic growth. This is a decisive step towards creating world-class port infrastructure and reinforcing India’s position as a global maritime hub.” DeshGujarat

Dwarka: For the second consecutive day, several areas in Gujarat have been hit by unseasonal rainfall and thunderstorms, turning summer landscapes reminiscent of the monsoon season. The sudden weather change, marked by dark clouds and strong winds, has caused significant distress to the farming community and disrupted local events.

The rainfall has mostly been reported from districts in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, including Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, and Gir Somnath.

Devbhoomi Dwarka district witnessed downpours in Dwarka, Khambhaliya, and Kalyanpur. Kalyanpur recorded the highest rainfall at over one inch, while Khambhaliya received around half an inch. In Pindara village of Jam Kalyanpur, a religious “Shiv Katha” event had to be postponed after the pavilion was flooded. Bhatia and surrounding rural areas also reported significant rainfall activity.

Rain lashed Porbandar city and its rural areas, as well as the Barda region. Strong winds accompanying the rain led to the collapse of a mobile tower in the city.

In Kutch, rain spells were reported in Gandhidham, Adipur, Bhachau, Anjar, Mundra, and Varsamedi. In Bhachau, the rainfall has raised concerns for the local salt industry.

In Veraval of Gir Somnath, the Satta Bazaar area experienced waterlogging following significant rainfall. Jamnagar city and its surrounding areas witnessed sudden weather changes and unseasonal showers, while similar conditions were reported in parts of Rajkot city and the Jetpur region.

Unseasonal showers also affected the Vav-Tharad and Banaskantha areas in North Gujarat, including villages such as Thanesra, Tadav, Chandangarh, Rana, Kundariya, and Karli.

Devastating Impact on Agriculture

With this untimely rain, farmers across these regions are staring at crop losses. Rainwater has flooded fields, damaging standing summer crops such as moong (green gram), sesame (til), groundnut, and cumin. In some areas, mango orchards were also affected, with fruits falling prematurely due to strong winds. In Bhatia village of Dwarka, farmers who had brought their produce to the marketing yard saw their crops get drenched due to inadequate shelter facilities.

IMD Alert and Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the next 24 hours, warning of light thunderstorms and lightning in 15 districts: Kutch, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan, Mehsana, Aravalli, Morbi, Surendranagar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Botad, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagadh, and Gir Somnath, along with the Union Territory of Diu. While the activity is expected to subside briefly, rainfall may resume in parts of North Gujarat and Kutch by April 7. Residents have been advised to remain cautious in open areas during thunderstorm activity. DeshGujarat

Bhavnagar: More than 15 days after allegations of corruption related to a property transaction involving approval under the Disturbed Areas Act surfaced in the city, the Nilambaug police have registered an FIR against the accused, Momin M. Pathan, an outsourced driver attached to the then Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), for allegedly demanding lakhs of rupees on the pretext of securing official approval.

The case pertains to the proposed sale of a commercial property near Crescent Circle in Bhavnagar. Acting on a written complaint filed by the then Assistant Collector, Pratibha Dahiya, the police have initiated action and booked the accused.

According to the police, Pathan allegedly misused his position by falsely invoking the names and designations of government officials to facilitate illegal financial transactions. On March 17, 2026, audio and video clips purportedly featuring Pathan went viral on social media, in which he was allegedly heard negotiating monetary deals while claiming influence within the Collector’s office.

The complaint further states that Pathan had no authority to access or share official documents; however, he allegedly photographed sensitive records without permission and used them to lend credibility to his demands. He is also accused of leaking government documents through electronic means and soliciting money in the name of the administration.

Taking serious note of the irregularities, the police have registered a case against Pathan under Sections 318(2), 212, 204, 228, and 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and have initiated further investigation. DeshGujarat

Surat: Local residents in the Gorat Road area staged protests against an alleged illegal high-rise construction, putting up banners outside their housing societies and warning political leaders not to seek votes unless their concerns are addressed.

According to residents, a 21-storey building has been constructed near the Gorat Hanuman Temple despite restrictions under the Disturbed Areas Act, raising serious questions about alleged violations and administrative oversight.

Protest banners and posters have been displayed around the temple precinct and at the entrances of several residential societies. The messages on the banners are explicit: “Only those leaders who can save the Gorat Hanuman Temple should come to seek votes.” Residents allege that, despite the law being in force, there are attempts to settle people of other religions in the area in violation of regulations.

A related case concerning the alleged allotment of flats to people of other religions by a builder is currently pending before the High Court.

Shivlahari Goswami, priest of the Gorat Hanuman Temple, said, “I have been serving here for the past 23–24 years. This area has a clear Hindu majority. If people of other religions are settled here, it could be harmful for both the temple and local residents.”

Local resident Kushmanbhai Patel alleged that the Disturbed Areas Act has been completely violated in the project. “We have been opposing this project for the last five years and have submitted multiple representations. Despite the law being in force, efforts are being made to settle people of other religions here. We have even approached the High Court, but no political party has supported us. How was a 21-storey building permitted on an 18-metre road? These approvals appear to be illegal,” he said.

The issue has now escalated beyond a construction dispute and taken the shape of an electoral concern. Hundreds of families from the Tadwadi and Hanuman Chowk areas have reportedly decided to support only those candidates who take action to stop the alleged illegal settlement and ensure the temple’s protection.

Residents stated that they will prioritise local security and strict implementation of the Disturbed Areas Act over political affiliations. They have also warned of intensified agitation if appropriate action is not taken within seven days.

Residents further said they have approached multiple authorities, including the Collector’s office and the Mamlatdar office, but have not received any concrete response. The matter is now before the High Court. Protesters also alleged that the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) granted permissions retrospectively, noting that three floors had already been constructed by the time formal approval was issued.

Junagadh: In the city known as “Narsaiya ni Nagri,” a decades-old statue of saint-poet Narsinh Mehta, installed near Girnar Darwaja, was vandalised two days ago. An unidentified person allegedly broke one hand of the statue by pelting a stone.

The statue, installed in 1983 by the Narsinh Mehta Statue Trust, has remained damaged for over 48 hours, and the trust has now decided to undertake the repair work.

Vijaybhai Kikani of the Narsinh Mehta Statue Trust said that a survey will be conducted in consultation with an artisan to assess whether the broken hand can be reattached or needs to be recreated. “The broken part is currently at the police station, and further action will be taken accordingly,” he said.

He added that the statue was originally installed at the Girnar Darwaja circle to commemorate Narsinh Mehta’s legacy, as Junagadh is regarded as the land of Narsaiya. The location was chosen deliberately, as Narsinh Mehta is believed to have passed through this route daily on his way to bathe at Damodarkund.

Meanwhile, residents have demanded improved security measures, including proper lighting around the circle, to prevent such incidents in the future.

Narsinh Mehta, a renowned 15th-century Bhakti poet, spent a significant part of his life in Junagadh, which was an important centre of devotion during that period. It was here that he composed many bhajans and devotional poems dedicated to Lord Krishna.

The site known as Narsinh Mehta no Choro in Junagadh continues to be associated with his legacy. It is believed that he performed bhajans and kirtans at this place, which is now regarded as a pilgrimage site. DeshGujarat
