Heliyon is a monthly peer-reviewed open-access mega journal covering research in Science, Medicine and Engineering. Its counter-part for Arts, Humanities and Law is journal Social Sciences and Humanities Open. Unlike most of its competitors, the journal publishes works reporting negative/null results, incremental advances, and replication studies,[1] thus filling the market niche, which became vacant after the discontinuation of Journal of Negative Results in Biomedicine in 2017.

Helioyn was launched in 2015 by Cell Press, a division of Elsevier. The journal is divided into numerous sections, each with its own editorial team. All articles are published in Heliyon under a CC BY open access license. The article processing charge in 2024 is 2,160 US$,[2] although authors from countries eligible for Research4Life[3] program may obtain a discount or waiver.[4]

Criticism

In 2015 Elsevier's database Scopus indexed Heliyon "with just one (1) citation and 4 issues," which was a viloation of the Scopus policy.[12]

Ever since its launch Heliyon had a problem of attracting reviewers and of anomalously long manuscript reviewing time: the journal website states 160 days[13] alhtough many authors reported, that it was more than 7 months.[14]

In order to attract a larger number and a better quality of reviewers Heliyon offers a fee waiver for one manuscript to people, "who submit ~4 valuable and timely reviews every quarter."[15]
