Karen Sue Haynes is an American college administrator and social worker. She served for 8 and a half years as the president of the University of Houston–Victoria. In 2004, she became the president of California State University San Marcos.

Education

Haynes was a first generation college student. She studied sociology and psychology at Goucher College. She earned a Master of Social Work from McGill University. Haynes holds a doctorate in social work from University of Texas at Austin.[1] Her 1977 dissertation was titled The Correlates of Mid-Management Satisfaction in a Large Scale Social Service System.[2]

Career

After moving to Texas due to her husband's job offer at the University of Texas at Austin, she had difficulty finding work in the social work field. She later started to teach undergraduates. She became the first female dean in the University of Houston System. In 1995, she became the president of the University of Houston–Victoria. In 2004, she was appointed as president of California State University San Marcos.[3]

She is the author of Affecting Change: Social Workers in the Political Arena and A Dream and a Plan: A Woman’s Path to Leadership in Human Services and Women Managers in Human Services.[3]
