Reframing Roman Liturgy : A Critical Edition of Onofrio Panvinio’s Vetusti Aliquot Rituales Libri
2022
This book presents a critical edition of a collection of liturgical manuscripts that theAugustinian friar Onofrio Panvinio (1530–1568) assembled in the 1560s for the CardinalAlessandro Farnese as well as for Hans Jakob Fugger in Augsburg. Onofrio Panvinio isprimarily known for his antiquarian studies about ancient Rome and for his editionof Bartolomeo Platina's Lives of the Popes. His preoccupation with the Roman rite, however, remains until today largely unnoticed by modern scholarship. This editionof Panvinio's Vetusti aliquot rituales libri highlights his interests in the developmentof Roman liturgy during the last sessions of the Council of Trent (1545–1563) by presentingthe various documentary as well as cultural layers of Panvinio's collection ofRoman ritual manuscripts.

Why and How the Publication of the Pastoral Liturgy Directory Turned 2023 into a Seismic Year for RE in Catholic Schools in England and Wales
Journal of Religious Education. 2024 72(3):389-398.
This article presents an initial analysis of the "Prayer and Liturgy Directory," which was published by the "Catholic Education Service" of England and Wales in 2023. It is argued that this document has many positive features, and provides a helpful guidance document for those involved with planning liturgies in a Catholic school context. However, a closer analysis indicates that there are some problematic features with this document. This analysis of the "Prayer and Liturgy Directory" (2023) is set against a broader claim, which argues that it is very significant for RE and Catholic Education because of its relationship to two other documents that come to the fore in 2023. In retrospect 2023 will turn out to be a watershed point that has set RE in English and Welsh Catholic schools along a highly distinctive pathway.

The sacred image in the liturgy as seen by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger
Sacrum et Decorum, Vol 17, Pp 69-80 (2024)
In his theological reflections on the question of liturgy in the Church, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger also addressed the issue of art and the sacred image. He did not develop any theological aesthetics of his own, but his theological remarks on the image are of great importance. Ratzinger demonstrated that the image is an integral and integrating part of the liturgy and, as such, demands appropriate consideration within the Church. Two issues merit particular attention in the context of contemporary challenges, particularly the phenomenon of what has been termed ‘new iconoclasm’. The first issue is that of the coherent presence of the image in the ongoing development of divine revelation, which moves from the Old to the New Testament. This clearly expresses the need for the image. Subsequently, the liturgy , which is rooted in the history of revelation and represents its lived experience within the Church, requires the image in order for it to reveal its full salvific meaning. The purpose of the image in the liturgy , and in a broader sense in the Church, is to prompt contemplation and adoration of the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ.

Observant Reforms and Cultural Production in Europe. Learning, Liturgy and Spiritual Practice
2023
The impetus of religious reform between ca. 1380-1520, which expressed itself in a variety of Observant initiatives in many religious orders all over Europe, and also brought forth the Devotio moderna movement in the Low Countries, had considerable repercussions for the production of a wide range of religious texts, and the embrace of other forms of cultural production (scribal activities, liturgical innovations, art, music, religious architecture). At the same time, the very impetus of reform within late medieval religious orders and the wish to return to a more modest religious lifestyle in accordance with monastic and mendicant rules, and ultimately with the commands of Christ in the Gospel, made it difficult to wholeheartedly embrace the material consequences of learning and literary or artistic prowess, as the very nature of such pursuits ran against basic demands of evangelical poverty and humility. This volume explores how this tension was negotiated in various Observant and Devotio moderna contexts, and how communities connected with these movements instrumentalized various types of writing, learning, and other forms of cultural expression to further the cause of religious reform, to defend it against order-internal and external criticism, to shape recognizable reform identities for themselves, and to transform religious life in society as a whole.
