A decision procedure is given for determining the validity of unquantified formulas in graph theo... more A decision procedure is given for determining the validity of unquantified formulas in graph theory. The procedure, which decides equality and containment relations for vertex, edge, and graph terms, reduces to a decision procedure for propositional calculus. The correctness of the procedure is proved using model theory based on the axioms for graph theory provided. The complexity of the algorithm and its limitations are discussed.

The Well Phone interfaces various health monitoring devices to the smartphone, and collects physiological data from those devices. It employs novel algorithms that perform statistical analyses, relate sequences of disparate measurements from different devices, and correlate physical activity with physiological measurements. The Well Phone provides feedback to the user by means of visualization and speech interaction, and alerts a caregiver, medical professional, or emergency responder, as needed.

LLFT provides application-transparent replication, with strong replica consistency, for applications that involve multiple interacting processes or threads. Its novel system model enables LLFT to maintain a single consistent infinite computation, despite faults and asynchronous communication. The LLFT messaging protocol provides reliable, totally ordered message delivery by employing a group multicast, where the message ordering is determined by the primary replica in the destination group. Creating robust communication protocols for distributed systems is an inherently dificult task du... more Creating robust communication protocols for distributed systems is an inherently dificult task due to the many possible executions and message orderings. We describe a communication protocol development environment based on a discrete-event simulator. We have used this development environment in testing and debugging a fault-tolerant totally-ordered multicast protocol operating over a network of multiple interconnected local-area networks {LANs). Each LAN is simulated by a processor participating in the testbed. and a "virtual gateway" mechanism is used to interconnect the LANs. The resulting distributed simulation environment allows the developer to create reproducible test scenarios, to inject faults such as network partitions, to single step protocol execution and, in general, to observe and analyze protocol behavior across each host in the network.

We present the Totem multiple-ring protocol, a novel reliable ordered imulticast protocol for mul... more We present the Totem multiple-ring protocol, a novel reliable ordered imulticast protocol for multiple interconnected locahrea networks. The protocol exhibits excellent performance and maintains a consistent network-wide total order of messages despite network partitioning and remerging, or processor failure and recovery with stable storage intact. The Totem protocol is designed for fault-tolerant distributed systems, which replicate data to guard against failures and must ensure that replicated data remain consistent despite failures. The network-wide totd order of messages provided by Totem simplifies the maintenance of consistency of replicated data and, thus, eases the development of fault-tolerant distributed systems.

We have developed prototype software for a mobile device that provides a better form of interaction between the user and the mobile device. To enhance the user experience, we exploit the convenience of speech input and output, using speech recognition and synthesis technology. In addition, we incorporate context-aware capabilities, using Global Positioning System technology to provide geographical coordinates. For the applications, we exploit the powers of the Web to provide Web Services, such as stocks, maps, weather forecasts, and other services. The synergy between speech input and output, context-aware capabilities, and Web Services truly empowers a mobile device, and creates a more friendly experience for the user.

This paper describes peer management for the iTrust peer-to-peer information publication, search ... more This paper describes peer management for the iTrust peer-to-peer information publication, search and retrieval system using Wi-Fi Direct in a mobile ad-hoc network. We present the fundamental concept of the iTrust mobile ad-hoc network, the capabilities and limitations of Wi-Fi Direct on the Android platform, and our novel algorithm for managing peer connections. Specifically, we discuss how to acquire MAC addresses and associate peers with IP addresses in order to discover, connect and transfer data using Wi-Fi Direct on Android mobile devices. An Android device with Wi-Fi Direct hardware capabilities can automatically create and maintain a mobile ad-hoc network with nearby similarly configured mobile devices to enable peers to share information.

Existing temporal logics have found little practical application because of the diiculty software engineers have in understanding and using them. Graphical interval logic has an intuitive graphical representation, and is intended to encourage software and protocol designers to use the methods of formal logic to specify and reason about temporal properties.

In this paper, we present the fundamental design of iTrust over Wi-Fi Direct. Next, we describe the iTrust over WiFi Direct API and components as implemented on the Android platform for mobile devices, and show how user applications can easily interface with the API to gain P2P functionality. Then, we present the iTrust over Wi-Fi Direct networking model, and the interactions between the Android and Linux stacks. iTrust over Wi-Fi Direct addresses the need for sharing of personal information and simultaneously prevents a third party from censoring information and preventing dissemination of information. It enables users with Wi-Fi Direct enabled mobile devices to publish, search for, and retrieve information. This paper describes a novel information distribution and retrieval system, named iTrust, that op... more This paper describes a novel information distribution and retrieval system, named iTrust, that operates over HTTP and the Internet and that provides trustworthy access to information. iTrust is a completely distributed system, with no centralized mechanisms and no centralized control, that avoids subversion or censorship of information. Individuals submit information they wish to share to nodes on the Internet that distribute metadata to random participating nodes. Likewise, users submit requests containing metadata for information they wish to retrieve to random participating nodes. The paper presents an overview of the iTrust strategy, implementation, user interface, and performance. iTrust can effectively enable citizens to distribute and retrieve information over the Internet, even in the presence of subverted or non-operational nodes. To determine whether these distributed systems can meet their real-time requirements, it is necessary to determine the message delivery latency of the underlying group communication systems. This dissertation presents an analysis, and measurements, of the probability density functions (pdfs) for the latency from origination to delivery of a message by the Totem group communication system in the presence of message loss and token loss. The Totem system provides reliable totally ordered delivery of messages to processes in process groups over single or multiple local-area networks (LANs) connected by gateway processors. Nodes with information to distribute transmit their metadata to n odes that are selected at random from a set of participating nodes . Similarly, nodes seeking information distribute their requests to nodes that are selected at random from the set of participati ng nodes. When a node receives a request, the node tries to match the metadata in the request with the metadata that it holds. I f the node has a match, it supplies a URL for the information to the requesting node, which then retrieves the information from the source node. Exploiting the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol Interface to Provide CORBA with Fault Tolerance

The Eternal system is a CORBA 2.0-compliant system that provides, in addition to the location tra... more The Eternal system is a CORBA 2.0-compliant system that provides, in addition to the location transparency and the interoperability inherent in the CORBA standard, support for replicated objects and thus fault tolerance. Eternal exploits the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) interface to "attach" itself transparently to objects operating over a commercial CORBA Object Request Broker (ORB). The Eternal Interceptor captures the IIOP system calls of the objects, and the Eternal Replication Manager maps these system calls onto a reliable totally ordered multicast group communication system. No modification to the internal structure of the ORB is necessary, and fault tolerance is provided in a manner that is transparent to both the application and the ORB.

In iTrust, a source node distributes metadata together with the URL for a document to a subset of randomly chosen nodes in its local view of the membership. A requesting node distributes a request (query) containing keywords to a subset of randomly chosen nodes in its local view of the membership. If a node receives a request such that the keywords in the request match metadata that it holds, then it sends to the requesting node a response containing the URL, so that the requesting node can retrieve the document from the source node. The membership protocol for iTrust allows each member to have its own local view of the membership. A requesting node detects a non-operational node by not receiving a response from that node within a timeout, or by receiving an error code from TCP.
