IndiGo’s Monopoly: IndiGo has monopoly over 63 per cent of the routes it covers. In all, Indian airlines fly around 1,200 domestic routes, of which IndiGo has over 950 routes in operation. Notably, though, nearly 600 — or 63 per cent — of these are monopoly routes, and about 200 (21 per cent) are duopoly routes where IndiGo has just one competitor, as per data analysed by aviation analyst and former network planner Ameya Joshi.

IndiGo flight cancellations LIVE Updates: IndiGo collapsed — and we’ll still have to fly it, because we hardly have alternatives

In this Oped piece, Anupam Manur is writing that...As of December 5, more than 2,100 IndiGo flights have been cancelled across Indian airports, leaving passengers stranded and airports in complete disarray. Videos of understandably frustrated people screaming at hapless airline desk employees have been circulating.

Along with cancellations, IndiGo’s operational troubles have spread to its on-time performance (OTP), which plummeted to 8.5 per cent on Thursday, down from 19.7 per cent and 35 per cent in the previous two days. OTP is a key measure of flight punctuality, and IndiGo’s figure is usually in the high 80 per cent range, which is a matter of pride for the aviation giant. The net loss to consumers due to the flight disruptions will be significant. Read Here

IndiGo flight cancellations LIVE Updates: IndiGo faces fresh turmoil as 220 flights cancelled despite CEO’s ‘stable operations’ claim

IndiGo cancelled nearly 220 flights on Wednesday across major hubs in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, even though CEO Pieter Elbers had earlier stated that operations were “stable” and “back on track.” Delhi saw 137 cancellations, Mumbai 21, and Bengaluru 61.

The disruptions follow the government’s decision to slash IndiGo’s winter schedule by 10%, citing the need to stabilise operations after days of chaos. The airline had already cancelled 460 flights across six metros on Tuesday.

Elbers said lakhs of passengers have received refunds but avoided comments on compensation. Under the passenger charter, airlines must automatically compensate travellers in cases of excessive delays or cancellations.

The massive disruptions stem from IndiGo’s failure to prepare for tighter safety regulations, triggering nationwide cancellations, spiking fares on other carriers, and creating airport chaos.

In response, the DGCA has issued show-cause notices to IndiGo’s top leadership, including Elbers and COO Isidro Proqueras, and ordered fare caps. Elbers has been summoned to appear before the DGCA on Thursday with detailed data on cancellations, pilot and crew strength, recruitment plans, refund status, and recovery efforts. (PTI)

IndiGo flight cancellations LIVE Updates: Delhi HC asks Centre to explain how aviation 'crisis' escalated

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday pressed the Central government to explain how the situation leading to the mass cancellation of IndiGo flights was allowed to escalate, calling it a "crisis". According to news agency PTI, the bench noted that beyond the inconvenience and distress faced by stranded travellers, the disruption also raised concerns about the economic impact. Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela further questioned how other airlines were able to capitalise on the turmoil by charging passengers steep fares.

During the hearing, lawyers representing the Centre and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said all regulatory systems were functioning and that a show-cause notice had been issued to IndiGo, which has offered an unconditional apology. They added that the crisis stemmed from multiple violations of guidelines, including rules governing crew duty hours. The court was responding to a public interest litigation seeking government intervention and refunds for passengers affected by the large-scale flight cancellations.

Indigo Flight status LIVE Updates: K Chidambaram seeks to know volume of loss due to aviation crisis

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has blamed the government, the DGCA, and the IndiGo Airlines for the aviation crisis. He said the government's measures now are only "reactive". "They should have been far more proactive. When they gave the guidelines to the airlines to give extra rest time for pilots in line with international protocol, they should have also done an impact assessment to see whether the airline is capable of doing that with the schedule they are currently following. But they did not do that," he said.

He further said that only passengers are paying for the entire fiasco. "Till now, we do not know what the entire economic loss is. We know how many tickets have been cancelled and refunded. But what about the other losses? Hotel booking cancellation, events cancelled. Who's going to compensate for all that? And does the government even have an assessment of what economic loss the fair-paying passengers have faced because of this huge fiasco," Chidambaram asked.

IndiGo flights status LIVE updates: Releasing CEO's 'folded hands' photo not solution to aviation crisis, says Priyanka Chaturvedi

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi says the Centre is on its knees asking IndiGo to keep flying by giving them all kinds of concessions. She said releasing the photo of IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers with his hands in a folded position "was not a soluton" to addressing the aviation crisis or portray that the government was on top of things. "IndiGo has become so big that it is arm-twisting everybody. It is for the DGCA and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to ensure that there is no monopoly. I feel releasing that photo is not really a solution. Clearly, the Government of India has buckled and found itself incompetent. I want to ask IndiGo: while all their flights are disrupted, how did their flight to Thailand take off, carrying the two main accused in the Goa fire tragedy?"
