Hi all,
Earlier this afternoon we apparently filled up our quota of tickets for
GLAM-Wiki; if you try and register on eventbrite, you'll be told we're sold
out.
http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM-WIKI_2013
I am fairly sure we are not actually full and we will be able to release
more tickets, but it'll take us a couple of days to sort out - both
tomorrow and Monday are public holidays here in the UK, so most of the
organisers have already gone on holiday, and …
[View More]we won't be able to check
numbers with the venue until Tuesday at the earliest. I recommend you sign
up on the waitlist and we'll notify you when tickets are available again.
If you have already made arrangements to come to GLAM-Wiki (or you're a
speaker...) but have not yet registered, please don't panic! Drop me an
email and I'll make sure it's sorted out.
Apologies for the inconvenience,
- Andrew.

Do you want to learn how your library can harness Wikipedia to improve
discoverability of library resources, including materials in special
collections and archives? Have you always wanted to contribute to Wikipedia
but aren't sure how to get started? Have you tried to edit but haven't had
a good …
[View More]experience? Do you need tips on how to teach information literacy
with Wikipedia, or had faculty ask about teaching with it? Do you simply
want to learn more about using and contributing to the largest and
most-used reference work in human history?
On April 10th, just before the ACRL 2013 kickoff, you are invited to

Wikipedia. The workshop is open to all and includes refreshments. ACRL
registration is not required to attend the workshop.
Three librarians who are expert Wikipedians will give an overview of the
project, guide participants through a hands-on editing session, talk about
the relationship between libraries and Wikipedia, and answer questions.

Hi all, and apologies for crossposting -
We've been pushing ahead with the last stages of planning for the
GLAM-Wiki conference these past couple of weeks, and I thought I'd
send around a reminder that it'll be four weeks from now!
The conference will be looking at the work done by Wikimedians working
with cultural organisations over recent years, and highlighting the
prospects for future cooperation. It will involve a series of talks
and reports (Friday), workshops (Saturday), and an
…
[View More]unconference\hackathon run by THATcamp (Sunday).
The conference is hosted by the British Library in London from 12-14
April, and organised by Wikimedia UK with support from Wikimedia
Sweden and Europeana. Speakers include Michael Edson (Smithsonian),
Lizzy Jongma (Rijksmuseum), and Nick Poole (Collections Trust), as
well as twenty or thirty others from inside and outside the Wikimedia
community. More details on WMUK's blog post:

Hello Asaf,
There's a meeting up in Baltimore to get input on the new "Bibliographic

Can you make time to attend? If not, …

Good afternoon, Bibliographic Framework Community:
NISO will be hosting an in-person meeting in Baltimore on April 15-16 to =
engage the public conversation on the development of a public =
bibliographic ecosystem development roadmap. This un-conference-style =
gathering will be used to elicit and prioritize themes for greater =
discussion over the coming months. The meeting will begin at 10:00 am =
on Monday and end at 3:30 on Tuesday and will be held at the Tremont =
Grand Hotel (222 St Paul St Baltimore, MD 21202 (410) 727-2222) in =
downtown Baltimore. It will be a free and open meeting, although space =
is limited to only 75 attendees. A live stream will be broadcast, as =
well as forums for engaging and gathering input from virtual =
participants. Logistic details as well as details on how to participate =
virtually will be posted to this list as well as the NISO page for this =
project: http://www.niso.org/topics/tl/BibliographicRoadmap/
Prior to the meeting a discussion paper will be circulated, which will =
be developed on a wiki or open document format. Again, details on how =
to contribute to that document will be posted to this list (and others).=20=
Please RSVP to the event using the in-person event survey. =
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N68RTN8
In addition, many of you have requested that NISO host a meeting at the =
ALA Annual conference in late June. We have also put in a room request =
to the American Library Association to host a meeting of interested =
parties to continue the conversation related to the project during ALA's =
Annual conference in Chicago. We have requested a meeting room on =
Monday, July 1 in the afternoon. Once that date/time is set by ALA, we =
will post information about it here and distribute it publicly through =
various channels.
If you have any questions, please email them to me or Nettie, =

I've started proposing and writing [[Wikidata:Requests for
permissions/Bot/VIAFbot]]. As suggestions started coming in, I thought
it'd be nice to have a small IRC meeting planning the bot task specifics
together. Maybe it's worth doing all the identitiers at once from all
language, and making sure we are satisfied with which Wikidata
properties we'll write
If you want …
[View More]to be a part of the meeting please fill out this
[http://doodle.com/ip92htift4x8y68r doodle poll], and I'll set up the
rest of the meeting.
Tentative agenda:
* Which Authorities data to use
* What to do for Data Conflicts
* What should be written to Wikidata for maximum phase 2 re-use
* Programming details of the bot

Hi folks,
I just want to notify you about an Individual Engagement Grant I have
proposed about furthering a project called The Wikipedia Library. The idea
is simple: to arrange for the community's most active and experienced
editors to have free, full, and convenient access to the best available
academic, scholarly, and subject-specific resources through a single
website. To date, the community has arranged four partnerships with
library partners (Credo, HighBeam, Questia, and JSTOR). …
[View More]Individually
purchased, that account access would have been several hundreds of
thousands of dollars. Hopefully we can increase that total, our partners,
and continue to improve the management of the program with a dedicated
grant:
You can comment on the proposal here:
* https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/The_Wikipedia_Library
The prior Fellowship proposal with community endorsements is here:
*
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Fellowships/Project_Ideas/The_Wiki…
The ongoing project management page is here:
* http://enwp.org/WP:TWL
Should this project be accepted for a grant (or even if it's not), I
definitely would like your help in thinking about issues like:
* What are the highest priority resources to get first?
* How can we leverage our collective contacts in the research and
publishing community?
* How would we organize a successful program with tens or hundreds of
participating sites/journals?
* What technical infrastructure could support a website with access to that
many sources (e.g. SAML)
I'd love to continue this conversation.
Best,
Jake Orlowitz

There is no one place that serves as a central promotion spot. As with
social media, you have to get into various places to promote your event.
…
[View More]
Don't forget to add your event to this year's Wikipedia Loves Libraries
list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Loves_Libraries/Planned_e…
- Presumably the people in the local Wikimedia chapter are apprised of
the event and will come.
- Make sure the library and UNC will promote the event (widely) - don't
forget the campus newspaper
- Social media: Twitter, Facebook, and the usual suspects
- There must be local venues/outlets (newspapers? websites? community
centers?) that cater to the African American community in Chapel Hill and
environs -- use them.
- I note the date is April 16 - might you want a tie-in to Lincoln?
In short, as with social media, there is no "one size fits all" and you
have to reach out in many ways (often) to promote your event.
Good luck!
