Hello,
Hope this finds you well. I didn't plan on meeting librarians at a
university here in Cairo, Egypt, but they expressed interest in Wikipedia,
so we are meeting :). The problem is, I really don't know what activities
to offer them. I have zero experience in Wiki+libraries collaborations. It
would be more than great if anybody could help me out. What I need is:
1. Understanding the nature of librarians work (I know it is a big topic,
but some general remarks would do).
2. Having examples …
[View More]of activities they can be part of to contribute to Wiki
(be it Wikipedia or Wikimedia).
3. Understanding how rewarding those activities are (so that I explain to
them)
4. Having examples of similar activities, if any, around the world.
Bonus point 5. Having a clear plan of action to give them (i.e. what do we
do after the meeting and so on)
Thank you so so much in advance for helping me navigate this uncharted
territory.
Best,
Reem

Hello,
Here is a presentation of the GLAM Wikimedia Portugal is currently starting
with the National Library of Portugal (BNP):
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/August_2018/Contents/Po…
At this point, our main focus is to automatize the most we can the
importation of data and associated images from the open BNP database into
Wikidata and Commons with the support and orientation of the BNP staff,
directly involving a group of librarians …
[View More]from the BNP, people from WMPT
(Wikidata users, bot scripters, Commons users, people in charge of
communications), the former Wikimedia Community in Brazil UG, who are
running a number of state-of-the-art GLAMs on similar institutions and are
sharing their experience with us.
Workshops (mainly focused in Wikidata) are being planned for the near
future, both at the BNP and with the Portuguese Wikimedian community.
More news soon. :)
(in case you are interested in sharing experiences on this kind of GLAM,
please contact me offlist)
All the best,
Paulo

Colleagues, if you are a librarian who is interested in how bibliographic data can make a difference in Wikimedia projects I urge you to consider applying to attend this conference.

We're thrilled to announce that applications to attend WikiCite 2018 are now open<https://goo.gl/forms/hV6rXRCdQ3fAK9v13>.
[WikiCite 2018.png]
WikiCite 2018<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2018> is a 3-day conference, summit, and hack day dedicated to the vision of creating an open repository of bibliographic data to support the citation and fact-checking needs of Wikimedia projects, and possibly, to serve as an open infrastructure for research, education, and information quality across the web.
WikiCite 2018 expands efforts started with WikiCite 2016<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2016> and WikiCite 2017<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2017> to explore these possibilities by leveraging Wikidata—Wikimedia’s structured knowledge base—and to develop open source tools to improve citation management and verifiability strategies for free knowledge. Since then, the amount of bibliographic data in Wikidata has grown exponentially, allowing us to glimpse the possibilities of a truly open, universal library and citation graph, while also exposing significant social and technical challenges.
This year presents a pivotal moment for WikiCite, wherein its emergent community — consisting of Wikimedians, librarians, LODLAM practitioners, software engineers, data scientists, and open knowledge advocates — must grapple with possible growth scenarios, address critical gaps, and set a course for the project’s future<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiCite/Roadmap>. If you are passionate about tending Wikipedia’s root system (references!), or believe in the broader possibilities of contributing to the bibliographic commons, WikiCite 2018 presents an unprecedented opportunity to meet fellow dreamers and hackers, and to help shape this vital effort.
This year’s event will be hosted at the David Brower Center<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Brower_Center> in Berkeley, California, USA, November 27-29, 2018. Applications to attend the event (including travel support requests<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite_2018/Travel_funding>) are open until September 17, 2018:

This is not directly Wikimedia related but relates to engagement of
librarians globally. OCLC (the organization I work for) has run a the IFLA
/ OCLC Fellows program for librarians from developing nations. It would be
amazing (I think) if we could attract some librarians who are interested in
leveraging the connections between Wikimedia projects and librarianship.
If you are a librarian from one of the identified countries, I urge you to
apply! Or if you can distribute this information to …
[View More]other relevant lists,
please do so. I know that one of our former fellow Saima Qutab is
currently active in the Wikimedia movement.
More information is here:
https://www.oclc.org/en/about/awards/ifla-fellowship-program.html
Program overview
Up to five individuals are selected each year for participation in this
intensive four-week Fellowship Program based at OCLC's headquarters in
Dublin, Ohio, USA. The program gives Fellows opportunities to meet with
leading information practitioners and explore topics including information
technologies, library operations and management, and global cooperative
librarianship.
The Fellows visit many libraries, cultural heritage institutions and
library organizations. They also observe OCLC's governance structure in
action, gaining insight into issues affecting the global library
cooperative. In addition, Fellows give presentations about their home
countries and libraries and discuss real-world solutions to the challenges
facing libraries today.
The Fellows then translate their learning and experiences into specific
professional development plans that guide their continued growth as well as
their personal contributions to their home institutions and country of
origin.
Program guidelines
The Fellowship Program is for library and information science professionals
who are in early stages of career development and from countries with
developing economies. Eligibility is limited to those who are from a
qualifying country, have a degree in library or information science
obtained within the past five years, and have at least three years, but no
more than eight years, of library or information science experience.
General inquiries
For general inquiries about the program, contact Nancy Lensenmayer
<lensenma(a)oclc.org>, Program Director, OCLC Education and Professional
Development.
