Hello everyone,
This is to announce that over the past few months we've been investigating
ways to help Wikidata editors maintain high data quality standards by
making it easier to spot mistakes. One type of data that hints at potential
errors in the data are outliers and similar anomalies. However, they might
also be a hint at something really curious happening in the world. A few
outlier examples include the Item of a woman who married the Eiffel Tower,
or countries with several capitals, …
[View More]the town with a cat as the mayor, and
so on. It's tricky for a machine to identify if something is a real
curiosity or a data error, but a human usually can.
For this purpose, we worked on developing a tool to find such outliers and
anomalies and make the process of checking these facts a little more fun.
It's now available at Curious Facts
<https://wikidata-analytics.wmcloud.org/app/WikidataAnalytics>
How does the Curious Facts system work?
You go to the curious facts website and select 'Give me some new weird stuff!'
from the tool. A random curious fact from Wikidata is shown. You can now
look over these Items to figure out what's going on. To fix the issue, make
sure you're logged in on Wikidata, so you can view the constraint
violations indicators in case there are any statements triggering a
constraint violation.
Please try out the tool and let us know what you think.
If you encounter any issues or want to provide general feedback, feel free
to leave us a note on this discussion page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata talk:Curious_Facts>.
Oh and please share if you stumble upon something fun along the way ;-)
Cheers,

Hello all,
The 2021 Board of Trustees election[1] is coming soon. Candidates from the
community are needed to fill the available seats.
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees oversees the Wikimedia
Foundation's operations. Community trustees and appointed trustees make up
the Board of Trustees. Each trustee serves a three-year term. The Wikimedia
community has the opportunity to vote for community trustees.
Wikimedia contributors will vote to fill four seats on the Board in 2021.
This is …
[View More]an opportunity to improve the Board's representation, diversity,
and expertise as a team.
For potential candidates:
- *Traits:* Wikimedia is a global movement and seeks candidates from the
broader community. Candidates should think about what experiences and
perspectives they will bring to the Board. Ideal candidates align with the
Wikimedia mission and are thoughtful, respectful, and community-oriented.
The Board would like to find perspectives and voices that are
under-represented and essential for our movement. They should bring what
Wikimedia needs from a new Trustee.
- *Commitment: *Trustees serve a three-year term and can serve up to
three consecutive terms. The time commitment is about 150 hours per year,
excluding travel. This time is not evenly spread throughout the year. The
time is concentrated around meetings. The expectation is that Trustees
serve on at least one of the Board’s committees.
- *Requirements*[2]: English is the language of business for the Board.
Candidates need a basic understanding of English, but support and training
are part of onboarding. Candidate applications will be translated into
several languages to reach a broad audience of voters.
- *Apply*[3]: Candidates from all projects and communities who meet the
needs of Wikimedia Trustee are welcome. If you know someone who could be a
good trustee, encourage them to run for election. Candidates can find
information and submit their nomination on the Apply to be a Candidate page.
- *Resources*[4]: A toolkit has been developed for community members who
are considering submitting their candidacy for the Wikimedia Foundation
Board of Trustees, and who want to better understand what to expect and how
to prepare for the role.
Thank you for your support,
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees

Hi everyone,
In March, many of you participated in our first community survey (see
announcement
<https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikidata@lists.wikimedia.org/me…>).
We analyzed and summarized the results – you can have a look at the slides
on commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikidata_Community_Survey_2021.pdf>
.
Your answers helped us to get a better understanding of where editors …
[View More]come
from and which gender and age they have, as well as what activities you do
on Wikidata.
The results are meant to serve as a baseline to see how the community might
(not) change in the future. We also hope that the data might inspire
community activities around increasing diversity and give some more
insights in who your fellow editors are and what they do.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Cheers,

Downtime is over - WCQS beta service has been restored from the latest
(available on Monday) dump. Unfortunately, due to the issue with
skolemization for SDC dataset, using skolemized blank nodes change was
reverted - we will be working on figuring out what's the problem.
Have a good day,
Zbyszko

Hello all,
The *WikidataCon 2021
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikidataCon_2021>* team has moved
forward with the conference organization and we are proud to share with the
community many exciting news: the conference theme, its three day program
structure and a special project on diversity taking place before the
conference itself.
For the past nine years, Wikidata has been rapidly growing: more data, more
contributors, more reuse of the …
[View More]data by various stakeholders. Where are we
headed? What is our compass point? Who is doing this journey with us? Who
should be with us and is not yet?
During the WikidataCon 2021, we want to *envision a sustainable future for
Wikidata* and address challenges the Wikidata ecosystem faces while the
project is growing. We are especially interested in tackling four
interrelated points in the conference:
- *technical infrastructure;*
- *data quality;*
- *community health; and*
- *diversity.*
So for 2021, we’ll go with *“WikidataCon 2021: A sustainable future for
Wikidata”*!
We especially want to raise awareness on the issues encountered by
communities in the Global South and marginalized communities in the Global
North, and their hopes on how Wikidata’s structure, content and community
could *represent the diversity of the world in a more inclusive way*.
Before, during and after the conference, we will lead discussions about how
to decenter Wikidata from its current focus on Europe and North America and
how to address the biases that currently exist in the structure of the data
and in the community.
For doing so, we also proudly announce the *“Reimagining Wikidata from the
margins”
project:
starting in June, we will coordinate a series of discussions with
communities in the Global South and other marginalized communities from the
Global North. This is an open invitation to think about how more diverse
people can add their local knowledge to the database while meaningfully
joining our community. It is about connecting with each other's realities
and perspectives, understanding its challenges and expectations, and
working together to foster a plural environment in our ecosystem!
We’ll release at WikidataCon a document/manifesto based on the discussions
with individuals and communities. If you’re interested in participating in
this process, please, *sign up on the project page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Reimagining_Wikidata_from_the_margin…>*
and
I’ll contact you for further details.
Last but not least, we also want to share with you that the conference
taking place at *October 29, 30 and 31* will be structured in the following
way:
- *Day one:* Formal program & networking + Wikidata birthday celebration
- *Day two:* Community sessions
- *Day three:* Hackathon & special events
This will be a distributed event with a full online program that people can
access and participate from anywhere in the world. Although São Paulo will
not host an in person event as initially planned due the hardening of the
pandemic in Brazil, the possibility of connecting local gatherings to the
online program is still valid, if your chapter or group is based somewhere
sanitary safe. Let’s explore how to safely celebrate Wikidata and our
community!
Please, don’t hesitate to reach out to the organizers at *info(a)wikidatacon.org
<info(a)wikidatacon.org>* or by leaving a message on the discussion page
<https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikidataCon_2021>. Hope to see
you all at WikidataCon!
