Hi all,
Join the Research Team at the Wikimedia Foundation [1] for their monthly
Office hours this Tuesday, 2022-04-05. Find your local time here
<https://zonestamp.toolforge.org/1649199600>.
To participate, join the video-call via this link [2]. There is no set
agenda - feel free to add your item to the list of topics in the etherpad
[3]. You are welcome to add questions / items to the etherpad in advance,
or when you arrive at the session. Even if …
[View More]you are unable to attend the
session, you can leave a question that we can address asynchronously. If
you do not have a specific agenda item, you are welcome to hang out and
enjoy the conversation. More detailed information (e.g., about how to
attend) can be found here [4].
Through these office hours, we aim to make ourselves available to answer
research related questions that you as Wikimedia volunteer editors,
organizers, affiliates, staff, and researchers face in your projects and
initiatives. Here are some example cases we hope to be able to support you
with:
-
You have a specific research related question that you suspect you
should be able to answer with the publicly available data and you don’t
know how to find an answer for it, or you just need some more help with it.
For example, how can I compute the ratio of anonymous to registered editors
in my wiki?
-
You run into repetitive or very manual work as part of your Wikimedia
contributions and you wish to find out if there are ways to use machines to
improve your workflows. These types of conversations can sometimes be
harder to find an answer for during an office hour. However, discussing
them can help us understand your challenges better and we may find ways to
work with each other to support you in addressing it in the future.
-
You want to learn what the Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation
does and how we can potentially support you. Specifically for affiliates:
if you are interested in building relationships with the academic
institutions in your country, we would love to talk with you and learn
more. We have a series of programs that aim to expand the network of
Wikimedia researchers globally and we would love to collaborate with those
of you interested more closely in this space.
-
You want to talk with us about one of our existing programs [5].
To improve the impact and accessibility of our sessions, we invite you to
share your feedback in a brief optional survey [6]. We estimate that it
will take about 5-10 minutes to complete. We welcome your input even if you
have not attended Office Hours. If you prefer to not respond via Google
form, you can provide your feedback via email. We will accept responses
until April 15, 2022.
Hope to see many of you,
Emily on behalf of the WMF Research Team

Hi all! We have an important update to share with the community
regarding the Wikidata Query Service scaling process: we closed our
study phase and published a working paper,[1] in which we short-listed
and analyzed four potential candidates for replacing Blazegraph. You
can find out a summary of the evaluation study process and results
here: [2]
The paper addresses the technical and user requirements for the WDQS
backend, gathered over the last seven years of operation, as well as
the …
[View More]implications for the system architectures. These topics, the
process for evaluation, and the resulting detailed assessments of the
possible alternatives are discussed in the document.
We encourage all community members to review and comment on this
paper,[1] by posting feedback on the discussion page.[3] We also plan
on hosting an online feedback session on *Wednesday April 13, 2022 at
18:00 UTC* (link to the meeting available at [2]).
Of course, we are available for any clarification or request of
information needed.
Cheers,

I'm transferring this information to the Wikidata mailing list, hoping
I'm not violating any posting rules since:
- the WIKI workshop will be colocated at The Web Conference 2022
(relevance)
- this is a specific announcement for widening participation to a
scientific conference, promoting a DEI grant which I believe is part of
the core values of this list.
Best regards.

2nd Round for NON-authors
- Application deadline: April 8th, 2022
- Decision notification: April 13th, 2022
The ACM Web Conference series is committed to Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion (DEI). In accordance with ACM’s policy
(https://www.acm.org/diversity-inclusion), we intend to celebrate the
similarities and differences that make our community so innovative and
productive by opening up and widening access to the entire conference
program of The ACM Web Conference 2022.
To reach this goal, we are happy to propose The Web Conference 2022 DEI
program, which is also partially supported by a specific donation by
Google (https://diversity.google/). This program offers full FREE
registrations to the entire conference week. This second round of
application is *NOT* suitable for authors, but instead, tailored for the
researchers from the Global South who had little or no previous
experiences of The Web Conference.
The number of available DEI tickets is limited. Each application will be
carefully studied by the organizing committee. If you apply to this
programme, please wait to be notified of the decision before registering
for the conference.
Do not hesitate to contact the Committee at dei2022[at]thewebconf.org.
We stay available to answer any questions!
*Application*
Applications are to be sent by email to dei2022[at]thewebconf.org, with
the following information inserted directly in the body of your mail
(please, do NOT attach any files):
- Name
- Surname(s)
- Email Address
- Country of residence
- Short statement written in English (up to 2000 characters including
whitespaces) containing any information that is relevant to justify and
motivate your participation in the DEI program. Note that this statement
will be primarily used to assess your eligibility.
Data protection
As DEI applications may contain sensitive data, we wish to stress that
all information concerning these applications will be handled according
to the GDPR (https://gdpr-info.eu/) European regulation. In particular,
application emails will NOT be transmitted and will be destroyed at the
end of the process.

Hello all,
The Celtic Knot organizing team is very happy to announce that the
conference dedicated to minoritized languages on the Wikimedia projects
will be back for its 6th edition, on July 1-2, 2022
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2022>.
Broader than the Celtic family languages, the event gathers people from
communities and languages that are underrepresented on the Wikimedia
projects. It is a place where people working on …
[View More]growing and maintaining
their communities can meet, learn from each other, and support each other
on topics like community growth, technical tools, or collaboration with
partners. Wikidata, as the platform to centralize, organize, and distribute
multilingual content, is a strong focus of the event.
For the Celtic Knot 2022
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Knot_Conference_2022>, we want to
build a light and sharp program, with a *strong focus on skills and
knowledge exchange*. Thanks to the input from the community, we identified
several important topics that we will address during interactive workshops
and guided discussions. We will make sure that participants can connect
with people from like-minded growing communities, share their experiences
with others, and bring back what they learned to their communities.
This year, we’re experimenting with a *hybrid format for the conference*:
while the core program will take place entirely online on Friday, July 1st,
and Saturday, July 2nd, we will encourage local groups and language
communities to organize onsite events before, during or after the
conference. The core program will be available in replay to make sure that
the content is accessible asynchronously.
The program of the conference is still under construction, as well as the
concept for onsite events, participants support, and various other
logistical aspects. We will regularly post updates on the talk page of the
event on Meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Celtic_Knot_Conference_2022>.
The core organizing team is composed of Daria Cybulska, Richard Nevell
(WMUK) and Léa Lacroix (WMDE). If you have ideas or suggestions, if you
would like to get involved in the conference as a helper, feel free to
contact any of us.
We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Celtic Knot!
On behalf of the organization team,

Is there a simple way to get the sitelinks count data for all Wikidata items? I want to use the data to help rank possible text entity links to Wikidata items
I'm really only interested in counts for items that have at least one (e.g., wikibase:sitelinks value that's >0). According to statistics I've seen, only about 1/3 of Wikidata items have at least one sitelink.
I'm not sure if wikibase:sitelinks is included in the standard WIkidata dump. I could try a SPARQL query with an OFFSET …
[View More]and LIMIT, but I doubt that the approach would work to completion.
