    Stock Market Holiday

Stock exchanges have decided to remain shut for trading on January 15 due to municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra.

In a circular, BSE said on January 15, trading in equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts would remain closed.

"Equity Derivatives Contracts scheduled to expire on January 15, 2026 shall be preponed to January 14, 2026.The aforesaid changes will be part of todays end of day contract master files," BSE said in a circular.

Similarly, NSE has also modified its earlier circular to declare January 15 as a trading holiday in capital market segment as well as F&O.

Last week, both the stock exchanges had issued circulars declaring January 15 as a settlement holiday which indicated that the market will reopen. Now that circular has been modified.

Settlement holidays are typically declared during elections or major public events when banking and clearing operations are affected. Because January 15 is a public holiday in the state, most of the banks would remain closed on the date.

    Stock market holidays in 2026

With today's addition, Indian stock exchanges will now remain shut for 16 days in 2026, besides the regular weekend holidays.

January 26 would be the second market holiday this month.

Key closures in the first half of the year include Holi on March 3, Ram Navami on March 26, Mahavir Jayanti on March 31 and Good Friday on April 3. Markets will also remain closed on Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1, and Bakri Id on May 28.

This will be followed by Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The final market holiday of 2026 will be Christmas on December 25.

It must be noted that Independence Day, August 15, falls on a weekend this year; therefore, there will be no additional market closure.

Besides, the market may remain open on February 1 despite being a Sunday in case the government announces Budget presentation on that day. Official announcement is awaited.
