Upon arriving...See moreSet against the backdrop of an intense political era in 2024, EXPAT follows Hero Jones, a successful yet disillusioned filmmaker, as he flees a politically unstable and racially divided United States to start fresh in Mexico. Upon arriving, Hero navigates a mix of surreal encounters: from comical border guards to a romance with a fiery local woman, undercover Federale agent, Catarina Rojas. His plan for a quiet escape takes a chaotic turn when he's kidnapped by a powerful cartel led by the suave Arturo Cordero. Arturo enlists Hero to produce a film portraying the cartel as heroes battling governmental oppression. As Hero reluctantly collaborates with Arturo's eccentric and artistic son, Art Jr., he grapples with moral dilemmas, cultural clashes, and the line between art and reality. All the while, rival cartels, shady government operatives, and his own growing paranoia keep Hero on edge. As the production nears completion, tensions explode when a rival cartel attempts to sabotage the project in a climactic showdown on set, blending real-life violence with staged action. Hero's journey is a biting exploration of identity, freedom, and the blurred boundaries between survival and artistry, culminating in an ironic and triumphant film premiere that rewrites the narrative of both his life and his work.
