With direction from Superior’s Town Council, the town’s South Pool could see up to an estimated $6.23 million renovation project for future swim seasons.

In its Nov. 10 meeting, the Town Council directed staff to pursue a series of upgrades to the South Pool, located at 3300 Huron Peak Ave. It is one of the town’s two pools — the North Pool is also slated for renovation, and staff said in the meeting that construction documents for the North Pool are expected to be finalized next year.

The South Pool upgrades are anticipated to cost up to $6.23 million and include upgrades to the pool as well as the pool’s bathhouse, which includes locker rooms as well as office and storage space, according to a staff presentation in the meeting.

The council directed staff to pursue a demolition of the existing pool instead of renovating its current footprint, resulting in a higher price tag but more new amenities and space. The new pool could include things such as a current channel or a type of in-pool hot tub, according to the presentation. It is also slated to include a new water slide and splash pad, staff said.

“We can figure out how to make the budget work — that, to me, is not as much of a consideration as making sure we actually get this project done correctly so that the community is really happy with it,” Mayor Mark Lacis said in the meeting.

The renovation plans for the pool were designed in light of community feedback, which requested things like the potential new water slide and a form of hot tub, staff said. With council’s direction, staff will pursue the larger renovation and demolition plans and come before the council again with final plans for approval sometime next year, staff said.

Construction on both pools could begin in late summer 2026, with both pools rebuilt and ready for the community by the 2027 swim season, according to an update from Lacis posted on Superior’s website in September. The North Pool renovations could include amenities and mechanical equipment upgrading, according to a schematic design report dated May of this year.
