“My Mama D used to say that mistakes happen, and cryin’ a bucket of tears over them is silly. Because wisdom is built from a pile of mistakes.”

Liberty

Thing is, my Mama D never had a one-night stand with an older man who never told her his last name and left behind a souvenir that was gonna be life changing – but I had.

My life had started as a fairytale, then morphed into a nightmare by the time I was ten years old. From the moment I’d been kicked out at eighteen, I had found a way to survive. Anything was better than the home I’d left behind. At some point, everyone gets a break, right? You would think so, but fate keeps tossing things at me, trying to see how much I can take.
Looks like it won because I’m stuck right back where I started. Living in my sister’s house, who hates me, with the clock ticking until I’m homeless again.

Liam

It was time I settled down. Found a woman I could grow old with because, let’s face it, I was so close to fifty I could reach out and touch it. The daughter I hadn’t got to raise was now in my life. Grown, married, with two little boys. I wanted to be someone she could be proud of and respect. I recently started dating a doctor, she was gorgeous, smart, and independent. It all looked good when you checked off the list. My daughter couldn’t wait to meet her. I wished like hell I felt something for her. A spark, a pull, anything at this point would do.

Then, one night, when I’m leaving her bedroom, I see a familiar face looking back at me from the other end of the hallway. The sexy bartender I should have left alone six weeks ago and couldn’t get out of my head shouldn’t be here. But she is. Which means she’s the doctor’s spoiled, selfish brat of a younger sister. This was not going to end well.

Double standards
Unsafe
He sleeps with her and her sister. First her and then the sister even after knowing they are siblings and while the h is at the house. She heard them two times.
After being with her he fucked her sister, received bjs from a stripper and also slept with another stripper.
After seeing her again he slept with her sister once while she was sick at her room (he left her there and went to her sister to have sex).
All this time he has the gal to judge her thinking she is with a lot of men. Disgusting sexist piece of shit.
He can be with her sister, he can be with strippers, yet he judges her for being hot and desirable??

Ohh and that nasty fucker had a daughter.

He sleeps with her sister, he is actually dating her (the sis) but still has sex with others because the sex is boring according to him. Yet he cums, the heardboard makes sonds and the sister screams.
He has a ons with the h. Six weeks later she is pregnant staying at her sister's house and hears him and the sister having sex. He saws her but continues to be with the sister and sleeps with the sister again even knowing they are related and while the h is there
And the blurb says he couldnt get her out of his mind 🙄 imagine if he could

Of course the heroine is not with anybody else and her relationship with her ex was bad.
Of course she is a doormat that has sex with him in a snap of his fingers
Of course body betrayal syndrome is her last name

Ohh he also judges her thinking she sleeps arounds because her sister told him so. I am sorry but what if she did????
He sleeps arounds and is not being judged or mistreated because of that.

Of course she doesn't sleep around, authors are funny that way, the women are only worthy if they are "pure" and only willing to sleep with the heroes. If they date others like the heroes do all the time than they are worthless.

Note to self: Apparently this has a 49 year old hero who’s still sleeping around and living a life like he is in his twenties. Double dipping, hero sleeps with heroine’s sister after they slept together and she overhears them smexing while staying at the sister’s house. Heroine is pregnant while he sleeps with the sis. He’s unaware, but never enough grovel.

More than 1 star only because the writing was fine. It wasn't good, but it also wasn't distractingly atrocious.

Liberty is 31. Liam is like 47. She's the ultimate downtrodden heroine: she's had a terrible life, she has no money, no family, no self esteem. He's an MC club President, with tons of friends, a grown daughter, and grandkids. He gets her pregnant after a one-night stand. Liam then proceeds to be horrible to Liberty for the entire book. And she just rolls over and takes that treatment. At one point towards the end, she puts up a token fight and shows a glimmer of self-respect. But, soon, Liam bulldozes her, and she rolls over and lets him have his way again. The end.

At no point does this book offer anything to balance the scales. Like, if an entire story has its boots on the heroine's neck while she's being crushed down on the ground, there has to be a part of the story where she's then being lifted up, for balance. Otherwise, that's ridiculously unsatisfying - which this book is. And it feels like emotional torture porn, which this is.

I don't mind stories where the hero does horrible stuff to the heroine. So, I'm not clutching my pearls about that aspect of it. (I like the Royals of Forsyth University series! My favorite Kristen Ashley book is At Peace!). I'm not new to a "the hero is horrible" type of romance! They can be so angsty and emotional and satisfying IF they're done well. There was a way this could have been good. But, there has to be some follow through, after the hero treats his heroine poorly -- if he doesn't grovel or atone for those actions, then she should get revenge, or he should at least do something meaningful to demonstrate change and growth. Or, it should lean into the darkness for a bittersweet "she's trapped with him" sort of HEA. And, for a story like this to work, he should definitely start treating her better before the 85% mark.

This book does none of those things. At least more extreme dark romances are self-aware about what they're doing. This is peddling itself as a "romance" but it's just the hero nonstop emotionally brutalizing the heroine. It's relentless, the story never lets up from it.

Also, for the entire book, the hero keeps repeating over and over that he's too old for the heroine. The way he talks about it, you'd think he's in his 40s and she had just turned 18. The way Liberty acts and the way people treat her, this story would have made more sense if she was 18. She's 31, a grown ass adult! A 16 year age gap is large, sure, but when the younger person in the couple is in their 30s, that's past the point where it's a big deal. So, one of the biggest "conflicts" in their relationship was a whole lot of nothing.

And that's not even mentioning all the "Hero sleeps with OW while the h is only ever with him" nonsense in this book. It's not technically cheating since it's before they're officially together. But it's still a lot of bullshit that he gets to be with a ton of women in this story, while she's only with him. Really? Authors are still writing that terrible trope? Who likes reading that? Who's asking for it?

When I got to the end, the author's note mentions that she wrote this in 6 days. That explains a lot.

First off, this book would have never landed in my TBR pile if I hadn't received a hot recommendation from my friend Nikki. So thank you dear, because I went in blind and I really enjoyed this one 🤩!!

Years ago, I discovered AB through her The Fallen Too Far Trilogy and I loved her writing. I recall that it felt very fresh. Now years later, reconnecting with her via Torrid, I was mesmerised with how it was so easy to read and how the story was so sweetly wholesome. It reconfirmed something that I loved about her first trilogy: AB writes down on her luck heroines and sizzling chemistry between her leads like it's nobody's business.

Liberty, the h, was a wonderful character. All that she went through and she was still standing! Although there is an element of big age gap (16 years), the way the story enfolded, it never bothered me. Their connection felt intense and true. Liam, the H, with his snobbish prejudices, irritated me initially, but I liked the earnest way he apologised and owned up to his f-ups once he got his head out of his butt. His angst and regrets were poignant to read. And an H who can cry so freely is a win for me 😊.

What I needed for this book to be perfect? Not much. But I feel like the nasty sister did not get any comeuppance for all her lies. And I needed a longer epilogue to see them happy as a family. I fully recommend this book to CR readers, because it deserves it.

P.S. On a trivial note, the procedure described for that paternity test seemed like a joke. I am no expert but the science seemed very improbable.

Reread 7/13/25

Yes, I reread it again. I just love this book so much and since I've been a reading slump I figured I would go to my new comfort read.

Reread 3/5/25

So, I knew it wouldn't be long before I reread Liam and Liberty's story. I loved it just as much as the first time, and this will definitely go on my go to list of rereads.

Original Review 12/10/24

Torrid is book 2 in the Judgement series and I loved it from beginning to end. Liberty and Liam were fantastic characters and were perfect together. I loved this book so much that it has been living rent free in my mind for weeks, so it won't be long before I do a reread.

I loved Liam and Liberty’s story so much. I always know when I start an Abbi Glines book that it’s going to be good, but this one was so good I couldn’t put it down. I’ve been wanting a Liam book since book two of the Smoke series, and it was so worth the wait! I will definitely be rereading this one.

Heroine - a down on her luck 31 year old victim of her circumstances
Hero- 47 MC club president , wanting to settle down with a worthy woman
OW - her sister, her bully, the very unworthy ow he is dating. Not exclusively.
∴ no cheating

Heroine - sounds, thinks and is treated like a young adult. She could’ve been anything from 18 to 23. She’s had a tough life, filled with

The ow is still gross and apart from the H treating her like crap and having her removed from his property she doesn’t get any other comeuppance. *scoff

Nope! Couldn't stand either character. I was extremely disappointed in Liam as it wasn't fun reading about him going through a midlife crisis. He honestly should retire from being the Prez of his MC. Seriously justice for poor Country. And Liberty... I couldn't exactly feel sorry for her predicament. I mean I tried, but all I felt was loathing. She was a bit pathetic. She would have done anything to be with Liam. It felt more like she was using him. The author trying to convince me she was in love with Liam didn't work at all. She almost felt like a freeloader. Sorry 🙈. Then the author all of a sudden giving her a backbone at 90% was again unconvincing. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but this one was seriously lacking in substance and emotion.

Liam and Liberty

Yes there was angst but it was annoying angst vs gut wrenching angst. Liberty is 31 but is written like she’s 21. Supposedly she’s been with her boyfriend for 14 years when she catches him cheating With his sister in law so Liberty leaves his ass .she gives up
Her company car so she is living in a cheap
Motel and riding the bus.Biker Liam and bartender Liberty have a ONS. Think of Liberty as Cinderella. She winds up Pregnant . Wicked step sister- WSS -aka Her wicked pediatrician stepsister ( what an oxymoron) lets her move in. Oops Liberty runs into Liam naked in the hallway right after he’s been banging the evil pediatrician. Stepsister kicks Liberty out . Liam thinks Liberty is a drunk, drug using uneducated slutty loser. He tells us this from his pov for 65% of the book. Liam is an uneducated , strip bar owner biker prez.— but he’s not a loser cause he has a house and car and a dog named Ozzy. Liam is like 47 and hung up on the fact that Liberty is too young— dang he acts like she’s 17. Dude she’s 31. Liam Is definitely not into daddy kink— get
With the program Liam you’re too old school— he can’t even use a computer much less realize that it’s all about daddy kink and RH nowadays.what is this the 1800’s? Anyways they have a lot of hot sexy times and he’s definitely Into that… but she’s too young and she’s an uneducated loser… but she’s preggers so …rinse and repeat until the 3rd act breakup and HEA.

⛔ Slightly spoiler-y review below

Absolutely loved the premise of the book, but it just didn't do it for me, despite being well written and fast paced. I really struggled with the MMC. He didn't seem to have many redeeming qualities and never seemed to learn from past mess ups. I also felt like we missed any satisfying conclusion with the FMCs sister.

AMAZING!!

Smokin’ hot, intense…this is only a couple words that describe this book. This was one of those 3 a.m. books because it was impossible for me to put it down. I love it when an author can make me feel invested in a couple and this author did just that.

Liam was the President of the Judgement MC and Liberty was a beautiful bartender that caught Liam’s eye. Their story was like Cinderella with Liberty playing the part with her evil stepmother and stepsister and Liam was her biker prince.

This was an age gap book which had me saying who the heck cares!! I’d love to have a “Liam” in my life. You know an author is good when she has you feeling everything that her characters feel. My chest ached at times with the heartbreak and came alive again when it was mended. The steam was one of the best I’ve read.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough and I can not wait to see what comes next.

I want to punch the H for how he is treating the h. And for god sake he is a grown man, why does he believe in things he hasn’t verified yet. I hate how poor he treated the girl, honestly if this book didn’t end happily I will still be happy and feel vindicated cause on how he treated the h.

Honestly don’t know why I keep reading these books. Convinced AG just hates women at this point. Why is the plot always the MMC thinks the worst of the FMC (who is some kind of helpless damsel in distress who does nothing to stand up for herself, especially against the MMC) and hates that he still wants to be with her so he treats her like absolute shit?

Oh, boy, I was having a hangover from a previous book which was a dark read and I didn't know how to shift back to my lighter one. This book was the perfect palate cleanser. And it's Liam's book! I've been waiting for his book since I met his character in the Southern Mafia book.

It was not too long. Less than 300 pages. It was a rage read in a good way. The way the hero pissed me off more and more that I couldn't wait for him to realize his mistake. Did I wish the heroine made him suffer more? Sure. But I loved how he spiraled when the shit hit the fan...hehehe...

Abbi does it again with this tear jerker! I could not put this book down the minute I started reading it. I was captivated by Liam and Liberty’s story. But let me tell you, you better be ready to see a different side of Liam that you may not have been expecting. I knew the man could be fierce and loyal and he definitely is! What I wasn’t expecting was for him to be cruel to the woman he ends up falling in love with. For being an “older man” he still had tendencies to drink through his emotions until he didn’t feel them anymore. But! Once he realized his mistakes and poor judgement (haha get it? He’s the prez of the biker club Judgement, anyways back to what I was saying) he would own up to them and do his best to make things right. Were his choices always the greatest? No! But he knew no matter what that he was going to care for liberty and his children.

Oh and don’t even get me started on his oldest daughter, Madeline. The fire and charisma in that girl is absolutely amazing! She really made me laugh with how she stood up to Liam and didn’t let him get away with anything. Also, total love how Blake still thinks he calls the shots; but we all know Madeline has him wrapped around her finger.

Now let me not forget the wonderful Liberty! My heart breaks for that girl. Even in her early 30’s, she couldn’t catch a break. But this did not deter her from doing everything she can to make sure she would make her unborn child proud of her. She knew what love was like, even if it had been so long for her. I’m not meaning relationship either. I am meaning the love you get from the people who mean the most to you. Not everyone is lucky to have parents and grandparents that love them. Liberty not only lost her Mama D, but both her parents at a young age. Unfortunately her step mother and half sister did not love, appreciate, or treat liberty the way she deserved to be treated. I definitely felt like Liam needed to be smacked upside the head for not catching onto the lies sooner from Liberty’s sister, Sissy. Thankfully, Liam gets his sh!t together and shows Liberty just how much he loves her and finally lets go of the worries when it comes to him being quite a bit older than her.

P.S. for all my fellow dog lovers you are absolutely going to fall in love with Ozzy. I wish we could have read about Ozzy meeting his new little best friend. Maybe we will in future books :)

Liam and Liberty's story is one I was eager to read. I could tell it was going to be more than just your average romance. It moved me in such a profound and unforgettable way. It's was madding frustrating at times. It broke my heart more than once. It filled my heart with so much I cannot put it into words. This story packed a punch that I never seen coming. I braced for the impact it would bring but nothing prepared ke for how hard I fell for these characters.

After enduring a brittle and harsh life, Liberty was grounded, had a beautiful soul and showed kindness beyond comprehension. Liam was a one love, bad boy whose stubbornness was irritating, but his tenacity and loyalty was endless. It was hard not to lose your heart to this couple. It delivered more than I could have hoped for. Exceding all expectations, Torrid was a romance that will fulfil the most hardened heart and leave you with a contentment that is both uniquely satisfying and decadent. A brilliant spin on a fairy tale that all little girls adore, and big girls dream about. Endlessly moving and heatedly entertaining. 5 stars.

Liberty’s had a rough lift and when the hot biker offered her a lift home she didn’t think twice about it, until she needed to. Nothing could have surprised her more than to see him with her sister, her sister who she had to beg to let her stay so she could save and get her own place.
Liam can’t get the woman from the bar from his head, but the doctor he’s started seeing is a better option, more his age. When he sees her pass out, after he worked out, she’s the doctor sister he takes her to her sister home. The doctor tells Liam how bad life was growing up with Liberty and how ungrateful she is he knows he wants nothing to do with Liberty, until he works out, she’s carrying his child.
Things don’t make sense to Liam, everyone loves Liberty and she’s not like how her sister painted her out to be, could he have gotten things wrong. What happens when her sister finds out she’s the reason that Liam called things off with her, and will her ex give up on continually trying to get her back.

Different but good

Usually I don't care for age-gap romances but this one worked for me. This book was better than what I was expecting. Liam meets Liberty when he stops at the bar she's working at in order to get out of the rain. He is attracted to her and offers to give her a ride home. After a steamy night together, they go their separate ways. Six weeks later, Liberty realizes she doesn't know how to contact him to give him the unexpected news. Meanwhile, Liam has decided he needs to finally settle down and hopes the doctor he's dating will be the one. Liberty is forced to move in with her hateful half-sister until she's able to get on her feet. When she accidentally runs into her sister's boyfriend at home, she can't believe that it's none other than Liam. Liam walks away because of things he has heard about Liberty. When he discovers she's pregnant, he steps up to take care what's his. He can't keep his hands off of her even though he doesn't think too highly of her. There were a couple of twists that added to the story. The storyline had lots of steam but also lots of heartache. I liked the ending even though I don't know what to think of the baby's name.

Wow what a story, I had no idea what would happen with Liam’s story but my goodness it did not disappoint.

I adored Liberty from the get-go, where Liam made me cross at times. The way he continually believed that she was a selfish woman. Well, it could be no further from the truth!

The chemistry between these two was off the clock! My heart broke for her several times, she had had such a sad life.

I do wish the evil half sister got her come sister got her come uppence!

I did like seeing the turmoil Liam was in trying to resist his feelings to her.

Madeline, his daughter is in the book, and she really socks it to him and helps him overcome his fears about the 16 year age gap.

I also loved Blaise’s enforcers being in the book, who were not named, but by their characters we knew who they were.

The story was amazing, I could not put the book down, and I highly recommend it and wish I could give it 100 stars!

Abbi has done it again! I absolutely loved this story. It was so tragically beautiful and real. I devoured in one sitting. I didn't think I would like a book about Liam (Prez of Judgement) but I was pleasantly surprised. We also get a bit of backstory on Micah (VP of Judgement).
Now, I can't wait for Tex's story and I need justice for Country. My boy Country did not deserve what happened.
Also, shout out to my favorite Florida Mafia psycho 😈 Gage 🥰 Blaise, Madeline, and their sons, Huck, Levi, and Gage all make more than one appearance.

I don't think I can say enough about this story. So emotional. I must have cried 5x at least. Liam or daddy Liam, you choose. Liam is blind to his love for Liberty. He thinks age matters over his feelings. He just thought he was meant to be alone, well not really alone but no one special0. It suited him. Then Liberty fixes him a drink. I'm pretty sure he was sunk then, but he has to be stubborn! Liberty has been through so much, more than oneone should. Yet she smiles. She is a glass is half full kinda girl. I can relate to that, always wanting to see the good, or at least hope for it. Liam and Liberty are HOT! Like fire 🔥! I absolutely love them and this story, Liam may be on the top 5 list for me! This is an extremely emotional story, for sure a book hangover! Have tissues! Abbi you continue to blow me away with how you are constantly creating amazing stories! Like how? It takes me an hour to send 1 email. Lol Love this series and Abbi! Thank you for sharing your stories with us!

I've read every Abbi Glines book in my 20s. She was one of the OGs for me when I started my contemporary romance era years ago. But reading her book again just made me realize she's not the author for me anymore. I've read several morally grey romances out there and the MMCs are more pleasant than this one. The MMC's disrespect in this book—I can't. Writing a bully romance is one thing but portraying it is another. Maybe before I was into it when it was all the rage but I know better now because if dark romance authors can write their anti-heroes with respect only for their FMCs, why can't this romance author do it?

Once again the h is over the top drop dead gorgeous + she squirts (like ALL the other leading females from the mc & mafia) the story itself was a bit boring because it was on repeat chapter after chapter

ps: every new book lately from abbi = squirting

This was a challenge to finish. I'm so over the whole BBS hoopla, and this book was loaded with it to the point of nauseating. I'm also over MMC's who have to treat the FMC like shite just to drive the story forward.
