- Nene & Angel and their accomplice Cuervo participate in a botched bank robbery in 1965 Buenos Aires, then hide out from the police in Uruguay while the gang breaks down.
- In the 1990s, a South American city suffers the outbreak of a plague. The people react in different ways: Dr. Rieux tries to cure the sick, two French journalists expect sensational headlines, pious believers lament this God-given scourge.
- The film is seen through the eyes of a ten-year-old boy, Harry (Matías del Pozo), who does not know that Argentina's 1976 coup d'état is impacting his life. After witnessing the "disappearance" of dissident friends, a human rights lawyer (Ricardo Darín) and his research scientist wife (Cecilia Roth) flee the city and hide from the military police in a vacant summer house. With them are their two kids: Harry, who is fascinated with the escape artistry of Harry Houdini, and El Enano, his little brother. (Translated as "Little Guy" in the English subtitles, played by Milton de la Canal. The actual translation is "dwarf".) The family adopts new identities and attempts to lead a normal life. Later, they are joined by a student who is using the alias Lucas (Tomás Fonzi). Their new life is difficult, but a visit with their estranged grandparents (Fernanda Mistral and Héctor Alterio) reveals that they are still a close-knit family. Subtly hinted, however, and used as a metaphor, is the mother's constant smoking and El Enano's renewed bed-wetting. Both serve to show how stressful and precarious their situation is.
- Juán returns to his native Buenos Aires after 20 years to visit his dying father and tries to find Ana, his old flame.
- Leonor, a widow in a small South American town, gives birth to Charlotte, a dwarf. The mother not only provides a rich childhood for her daughter, she erases any clues her daughter might see that would lead her to think she is different (mother burns books such as "Snow White" and destroys lawn statues of gnomes). In short, she doesn't want to talk about it. The mother succeeds in creating a modern-day Rapunzel: Charlotte becomes an accomplished young woman who captures the heart of Ludovico. But then, the circus comes to town.
- Young Sebastian flees his parents' home in Buenos Aires and hides in their vacant estate in the pampas. Troubled by the news, the father sends a spy to lure the boy back. The spy, however, falls for a mysterious girl who controls the fate of those who succumb to her spell. It is a "fantastic" tale set in 1930s Argentina.
- Harvey Logan (Arturo Maly) lives with his two children, Juan and Eva, in a beautiful but cold and desolate land in the extreme south of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego. One day an English businessman arrives with the idea of turning that land into a tourist area. But Harvey is not so keen on turning his home into a tourist attraction. He surrounds his ranch with a wire fence and locks himself in with his children to stand up to the corporation. It's an especially tough situation for teenage daughter Eva Logan (Jacqueline Lustig) as he thwarts any chance of finding a boy to fall in love with.
