But while they are on the road, Foscarini's hired assassins murder Alessandro. As for Ortensia she is taken back to her father's home by force.

Maria (Velentina Cortese) comes to Rome to do what she can to aid the war-stricken people of her village, and meets Dick (Leo Dale), an American soldier in Rome on furlough from the front lines. He is concerned only with winning her companionship, while she tries to keep her mind on the mission that brought her there. They both eventually accomplish their goals, and when he returns to the front, there is a promise that they will be reunited after the war.

The action takes place in Lombardy after the Italian capitulation in World War II, when the area was under German occupation. The protagonist is a former soldier who returned home, but ultimately decides to join the partisans who fight against the occupiers.

Some Italian partisans want to take refuge in a convent to escape German raids. The nuns are a little perplexed at first but then agree since one of the men is seriously wounded. When the partisans eventually leave, the Germans take a terrible revenge.
