Arrival (January 1) Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94% Credit – Paramount Pictures

Arrival is a sci-fi drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer. Based on the 1998 short story titled Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, the 2016 film follows Louise Banks, a linguistic expert tasked with interpreting the language of aliens who have come to Earth in a giant spaceship.

Hulu’s lineup for 2025 promises an exciting mix of brand-new shows that span various genres, from sci-fi thrillers to gripping dramas. These fresh entries highlight Hulu’s dedication to delivering bold storytelling and unique perspectives, making the platform a hub for innovation. It also appears to be a big year for Korean series, at least on Hulu.

The 64-year-old actor – who stars in lots of fan favorite holiday films like Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love, Actually – was photographed on the set of the Amazon Prime Video show on Sunday (November 24) in Cardiff, Wales. It appeared as if Max Irons, playing Mycroft Holmes, might also have been on set!

Colin is set to portray Sir Bucephalus Hodge in the show, but we don’t have any further details. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, best known for his work in the After movie franchise, is playing the title role in the new series based on Andy Lane‘s novels. Also starring in the series are Hero‘s real-life uncle Joseph Fiennes, as well as Natascha McElhone and Zine Tseng.

Guy Ritchie’s new Sherlock Holmes television series titled “Young Sherlock” has found its Mycroft Holmes. Max Irons will play the role of the elder Holmes brother in the Amazon Prime Video show. Mycroft is Sherlock’s sibling who has already established the Diogenes Club in London. Little is known about Irons’ portrayal of the character so far, but it suggests Mycroft will play an important part in the story.

The series will follow the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes during his university years at Oxford. Hero Fiennes Tiffin was previously cast as the young Sherlock Holmes. Now 19 years old, he becomes embroiled in a murder mystery that threatens his freedom. Uncovering a vast conspiracy in the process, Sherlock begins to hone the observational skills that made him famous.

Set against the backdrop of 19th century Oxford, “Young Sherlock” draws inspiration from a series of novels about the character’s early life.

Hello, brother: Max Irons (Condor) will play Mycroft Holmes in Prime Video’s Young Sherlock series starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular character, our sister site Deadline reports.

Steven Soderbergh's 2002 film "Solaris," based on the 1961 novel by Stanislav Lem, was an interesting experiment as sci-fi blockbusters go. Starring George Clooney and made for a not-immodest budget of $47 million, "Solaris" tells the tale of an astronaut Dr. Kelvin (Clooney), who is sent to a distant space station to investigate the curious psychic properties a nearby planet seems to emanate. The space station is nearly uninhabited, as the crew have almost all taken their own lives. Dr. Kelvin soon finds that the nearby planet Solaris has the ability to reach into a person's mind and physically manifest memories. Kelvin's dead wife Rheya (Natasha McElhone) appears to him, much to his consternation. Because the real Rheya took her own life, the artificial Rheya begins sharing the same bleak thoughts.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Young Sherlock” series has added Dónal Finn to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.

Inspired by Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels, Finn has been cast in the role of James Moriarty, the notorious archnemesis of Sherlock Holmes. As previously announced, Holmes will be played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

The official description for “Young Sherlock” states, “At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. New Teaser Released for “Dune: Prophecy”

HBO has released its second teaser for its upcoming original drama series “Dune: Prophecy,” starring Emily Watson and Olivia Williams.

Part of the “Dune“-iverse and based on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s “Sisterhood of Dune,” “Dune: Prophecy” is set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and follows Harkonnen sisters Valya (Watson) and Tula (Williams) “as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.”

Halo will not have a third season, at least not at Paramount+. The streaming service has cancelled the sci-fi series inspired by the popular Xbox video gaming franchise of the same name. Season two premiered in February, and the finale aired on March 21st.

Halo video game fans never liked the first season of the series adaptation. However, its popularity among the general audience earned a surprising second season for the Pablo Schreiber-led show. After two seasons at Paramount+, the streamer announced that the series will not move forward with a third season.

Fans, especially the ones aware of the game lore, welcomed the move from Paramount+. They wished that the series could’ve learned a lesson or two from successful video game adaptations like Fallout and The Last of Us. Interestingly, both seasons of Halo received critical acclaim for their action scenes, cast, and visual effects.

Master Chief’s fight has ended. Today, Paramount+ announced that it has cancelled Halo after just two seasons.

In a statement, a Paramount+ spokesperson said: “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.” However, the battle may not be entirely over as Amblin Television, Xbox, and 343 Industries are said to be shopping the series to other buyers.

Paramount+ has cancelled Halo, Deadline has confirmed.

The news comes a few months after Season 2 of the live-action video game adaptation premiered on the streamer in February. Amblin Television, Xbox and 343 Industries are currently shopping Halo in hopes of finding it a new home, Deadline understands.

“We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward,” a spokesperson for Paramount+ said in a statement Thursday.

The live-action “Halo” series has been canceled at Paramount+, Variety has learned.

The big budget series based on the popular Xbox video game franchise aired two seasons at the streaming service. The show originally debuted in 2022, while the second season aired between February and March 2024.

“Paramount+ can confirm that ‘Halo’ will not move forward with a third season on the service,” the streamer said in a stataement. “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Xbox, Amblin TV, and 343 Industries will try to shop the series to other outlets.

The series is inspired by Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels and was ordered to series in May with Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the lead role. Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, and Zine Tseng also star. Firth will play Sir Bucephalus Hodge, with further character details currently under wraps.

Firth is primarily known for his film roles, including his Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning turn in the 2010 film “The King’s Speech,” in which he played King George VI. Channel 4 has picked up the detective series starring Breaking Bad’s Laura Fraser about a neurodivergent self-taught criminologist.

Patience has just wrapped filming and was made by Couple Next Door producer Eagle Eye drama for PBS Distribution and Beta Film, as part of Eagle Eye’s long-running partnership with the German major.

Fraser is Detective Bea Metcalf, the first person to spot the talents of Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis), who works in the criminal records department of Yorkshire Police, cataloguing and filing the evidence produced during major cases. A young autistic woman, she craves routine and order, relishing the solitude and structure her job provides, but she yearns for more.

Neurodiversity will play a thematic role in the series, with all neurodivergent characters within the series played by neurodiverse actors — including Purvis.

Stanisław Lem's 1961 sci-fi novel "Solaris" had already famously been adapted to film by the masterful Andrei Tarkovsky in 1972, so there was some debate as to whether or not Steven Soderbergh's 2002 version of "Solaris" counted as a remake or simply another adaptation. Given the slow, moody, contemplative style that Soderbergh affects for his film, though, one might be tempted to say he was directly emulating Tarkovsky, a filmmaker known for his incredibly long, extended takes, paired with broad moments of silence.

Italy’s Teresa Cavina has been appointed artistic director of Malta’s Mediterrane Film Festival, the second edition of which will run June 22-30 in Valletta, the island’s capital.

After many years in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Halo video game franchise finally made its way out into the world as a Paramount+ streaming series back in 2022, with the first episode of the show quickly becoming Paramount+’s most-watched premiere. But while the TV series is returning for a second season, which is scheduled to begin streaming on February 8th, the first season wasn’t met with overwhelming positivity, as many fans of the video game source material were disappointed by some of the choices made for the adaptation. Not even star Pablo Schreiber, who plays the character Master Chief on the show, was entirely happy with that first season. Speaking with SFX Magazine, Schreiber revealed there was even one element that he felt was a huge mistake: the romantic storyline with Master Chief and Makee (Charlie Murphy), which even included a sex scene.
