Andrew Stanton has made some amazing animated films like Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory but many believe that Wall-e is his best work. The film even won him an Academy Award. The story of “Wall-e” isn’t complex—it’s simple and sleek, just like his other movies. But what makes it special is that it’s more than just a regular animated film; it feels like a journey, this time told through the eyes of a little robot. In terms of storytelling and execution, “Wall-e” is a masterpiece that will never get old.
Wall-e (2008) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: Who is Wall-e?
The film begins on a dystopian Earth that has been completely trashed. Cities are abandoned, towns are empty, and the entire planet has become a giant garbage dump. Years of pollution, overconsumption, and corporate greed have drained Earth of its resources, making it unlivable.

More than most people you know, Oscar-winning animator Pete Docter has marked generations of children for life. I first met him back in 1995, when Pixar launched “Toy Story” into the world. Animation was never the same. I toured the original Pixar compound in Richmond, near San Francisco, and watched over his shoulder as Docter showed me how animators used computers to create characters. That was just the beginning. “Toy Story” was a first step toward a new form of digital motion pictures, pioneered by then leader John Lasseter and the mighty Pixar Brain Trust.
Back in 2018, when Lasseter left the company, Docter moved up to Chief Creative Officer, as the Disney division tried to continue its unsullied record of major hits. It did not always succeed, and the pandemic did not help. But in 2024, “Inside Out 2” broke Pixar’s own box-office record ($1.7 billion worldwide).

The Toy Story saga isn't over yet as Toy Story 5 is on its way, and while much is unknown about the upcoming movie's story, a tease from one of its actors suggests Buzz is stepping into the spotlight. Pixar's multi-billion-dollar franchise kicked off in 1995 with the premiere of Toy Story, the animation studio's first feature film. Since then, Pixar has released five movies in the franchise, including three sequels and one spin-off. Since Toy Story is so popular (and brings in a lot of revenue), the studio is developing a fourth sequel featuring the return of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.
Toy Story 5, starring Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 19, 2026.
Pixar announced Toy Story 5 was in production in early 2023, with Andrew Stanton directing and writing the next sequel. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are...

The Wild Robot is a win for DreamWorks Animation, but it also marks a surprising first for the studio with a clever reference. Chris Sanders delivers yet another touching story after having directed Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods in the past. The movie follows Roz, a serviceable robot who defies her programming when she becomes a gosling’s mother. The Wild Robot’s amazing reviews prove it even has the potential to win the studio’s third Academy Award.
The Wild Robot’s ending makes a strong case for the relationship between motherhood and nature, as Roz’s nurturing and self-sacrificing qualities shock her hostile animal neighbors and motivate them to work together. The Wild Robot benefits from a star-studded cast and features behind-the-scenes work by some of the most influential artists and storytellers. Tim Allen teases a major plot point for Toy Story 5. Allen has been voicing Buzz Lightyear since the first Toy Story movie and will be reprising the role for Toy Story 5, which is slated to release on June 19, 2026. Directed by Finding Nemo and Wall-e director Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5's story is confirmed to feature the returns of Woody and Buzz as they contend with the impact that technology has on Bonnie. An army of Buzz Lightyears stuck in toy mode are also involved in the story.
During an interview with Good Morning America (via Collider), Allen reveals that Toy Story 5 will feature Jessie in trouble and needs help. While he was unsure of what he was allowed to share about the plot, Allen discussed how he is in the process of recording Buzz's lines from the movie's third act and emphasized how impressed he is...

Toy Story franchise isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet. After that tear-jerking, fervent farewell in Toy Story 4, we all thought we had seen the last of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang. But Pixar has a surprise in store—Toy Story 5 is officially on the way! Yes, the beloved toys are coming back for another expedition, and we couldn’t be more elated.

The Toy Story series has been with us for decades, ever since the first movie hit theaters in 1995. It was Pixar’s very first feature-length film, and it completely changed the world of animation. From that moment on, Pixar became the gold standard for animated movies, telling stories that were not only for kids but for adults too.

Tom Cruise has been up for many roles throughout his illustrious career, but one cult science fiction film that he campaigned hard for ended up being a box office disaster, despite deserving so much better. Kicking off his career in the early 80s, Tom Cruise has always been one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, with an impressive filmography to boot. Even then, there have been roles throughout Tom Cruise's career that he lobbied for, or was almost cast in, that never ended up working out.
There have been some major movies that Tom Cruise almost starred in, but didn't end up getting, including Ghost, Wall Street, A Beautiful Mind, Iron Man, The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, and many more over his career. While these are all fantastic movies in their own right, there was another movie that Tom Cruise really wanted to star in, and was attached to...

Upon entering the Criterion Closet, “Finding Nemo” writer/director Andrew Stanton named it as “hallowed ground” and considering he joins an ever-widening array of talent to leave Criterion’s New York offices with a huge bag of goodies — from Ayo Edebiri to Mike Leigh — he’s not that far off. But for Stanton, his love for Criterion goes a lot deeper than its modern popularity.
“I have been a collector since the very beginning,” he said. “Matter of fact, I think Criterion started, similarly, a few years ahead of Pixar. So, when we were just a small group of nerds, we would just covet every new LaserDisc that came out. And here we are still.”
Celebrating the Criterion release of Peter Bogdanovich’s 1973 Depression-set comedy “Paper Moon,” Stanton broke down how well the film unfolds its narrative.

Allen, who has voiced the iconic Space Ranger since the franchise began in 1995, talked about how excited he was about the creative idea for the project.

Tim Allen is teasing the return of Buzz Lightyear and Toy Story 5.
The actor says he’s reprising his role in the saga and praised the Pixar project.
“It’s a very, very clever story,” Allen told Collider. “Do you wanna do five of these [movies]? I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever.”
“I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago,” Allen added. “It’s really, really weird to get back in it.”
Asked which of the four existing films is his favorite, the 71-year-old replied, “There’s nothing like Toy Story 1… that was such an amazing experience.

Kelsey Mann had worked at Pixar in a variety of capacities but never directed a feature when he was called in for a meeting with company president Jim Morris and chief creative officer Pete Docter. “I had no idea what the meeting was about,” Mann told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I knew it was either going to be the worst meeting in the world or the best.” Luckily for Mann, it turned out to be the best, because it was the meeting where Docter asked him if he would be interested in telling a new story in the world of “Inside Out.”

Many of the Toy Story franchise's best moments are defined by music. Acclaimed composer Randy Newman worked on all four Toy Story movies and wrote original music that is integral to the beloved and enduring legacy of the long-running Pixar franchise. Newman received numerous Academy Award and Grammy Award nominations for his work on the Toy Story movies. Toy Story 3 earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.
Newman's songs are widely recognized and celebrated largely because of how they enhance the Toy Story franchise's best scenes. While 2025 already has some huge blockbusters lined up, many of the biggest ongoing franchises will be taking the year off and returning in 2026 or later. There are many exciting sequels set for 2025, like Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Other big franchises are set to return with reboots, like James Gunn's Superman. Despite the arrival of these enticing cinematic events, fans of certain franchises face extended waits.
The Hollywood strikes of 2023 held up the development of big franchises across the board, and the movie industry is still feeling the effects. Though they continue to be one of the most celebrated animation studios for a wide range of projects, the Toy Story franchise remains one of Pixar's most iconic, and Toy Story 2 is a prime reason why. The 1999 sequel served as the studio's third feature-length project after making their debut with the 1995 original, which was nominated for three Oscars, and 1998's A Bug's Life, one of Pixar's more underrated efforts. It also wouldn't be the end of the franchise, either, as two more sequels have been released and a Toy Story 5 is currently in production.

This article contains spoilers for the "Toy Story" movies.
When John Lasseter's "Toy Story" was released in 1995, it was a coup for the industry. CGI had been used in films for a decade and there were myriad computer-animated short films, but the first theatrically released, fully-computer-animated feature changed the landscape. It certainly helped that "Toy Story" was a massive success, raking in over $365 million on a mere $30 million budget. The film was also highly acclaimed, sporting a novel concept (your toys are alive when you aren't looking), an excellent screenplay, and a first-rate cast.
After "Toy Story," it felt like the floodgates opened, and a shift from traditionally animated features to fully computer-animated features occurred within the next five years. One might even recall when Disney announced that it would be shuttering its traditional animation studio and only make computer-animated features going forward. This was slightly before its 2004 film "Home on the Range" flopped.

1995's Toy Story was the first feature-length CGI production, but before that, Pixar almost found itself at the helm of a Roald Dahl adaptation that bombed at the box office. Every Pixar movie is built on the shoulders of Toy Story's success. If the groundbreaking movie hadn't flourished as it did, it's possible the studio may not have become the giant of animation that it is today. While Roald Dahl movies also tend to enjoy commercial success, they pale in comparison to the profitability of Pixar's body of work. Ultimately, Pixar's fate took a very fortunate direction.
Although there is often a relationship between a movie's quality and its commercial success, not all box office bombs are necessarily an indicator of the film itself being bad. Similarly, a well-reviewed movie can also lose money at the box office. While Toy Story did very well across the board for Pixar,...

The biggest year in animation, especially in regards to movies, is coming very soon. 2024 has had and continues to have several standout releases and upcoming films in the animation category, including Kung Fu Panda 4, Inside Out 2, and The Wild Robot. While not every release, such as The Garfield Movie, was successful with audiences and critics, this year still showcased some strong new stories and the return of many iconic animated movie characters.
That being said, 2026 is an exciting year for animated movies as several franchises expand their stories with upcoming installments that could add new narrative layers. Several animation studios have announced the continuation of many of their popular titles, keeping a lot of these stories alive for new generations. Others lack specific details about their casts and main storylines, but are still exciting possible additions to the lineup nonetheless. All of these, in short, make 2026 a huge...

An interesting plot detail about Toy Story 5 has been revealed, and it allows the movie to return to a Woody storyline that would have fit perfectly within Toy Story 4's narrative. The information came as part of the Toy Story 5 reveals at D23, with director Andrew Stanton taking to the stage and finally shedding light on what the fourth sequel will be about. While one character would seem to be in the spotlight more than others, the nature of their arc in the coming movie also ties perfectly into an important piece of lore about Woody.
Toy Story 5's release date has the movie arriving June 19, 2026, which means it will have been over 30 years after the original premiered in 1995. Since its launch, Toy Story has become a sprawling franchise with its cast of colorful characters and heartfelt storylines at its core. Woody and Buzz have long...

Quentin Tarantino thinks “Toy Story 3” is one of the greatest movies ever, which is why he refuses to watch 2019’s “Toy Story 4.” During an interview on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, the Oscar winner suggested that “Toy Story” could’ve been one of the great film trilogies had the animated franchise not continued with a fourth film. A fifth “Toy Story” is now on the way.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy,” Tarantino said. “I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s ‘A Fistful of Dollars,’ ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.'”
“It does what no other trilogy has ever been quite able to do,” he continued. “The first movie is terrific, but...

Well, it seems like Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited 10th and final film will not be a “Toy Story” installment.
The director said during Bill Maher’s YouTube (video) podcast “Club Random” that the original “Toy Story” trilogy is one of the greatest trio of films of all time. According to Tarantino, the franchise overextended with the fourth installment. Well, he’s gonna hate this news: a fifth “Toy Story” was announced earlier this year with original director Andrew Stanton returning to the chair. “Toy Story 5” will center on children who become obsessed with technology; it is slated for a June 19, 2026 release.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy,” Tarantino told Maher in the below video. “In the case of ‘Toy Story,’ the third one is just magnificent. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Quentin Tarantino doesn’t want to play with Toy Story anymore.
The famed director recently appeared on an episode of the comedy podcast Club Random with Bill Maher, where, among other things, he discussed the difficulties of wrapping up a trilogy in a satisfying manner for the audience. Because of his love for the initial Toy Story trilogy, the Kill Bill helmer said he had “no desire” to view subsequent films.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the Toy Story trilogy,” he said in a clip that has since gone viral on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

Brad Bird's return to helm Incredibles 3 brings relief for fans, as only he can bring the characters to life at the level they deserve. Pixar boss Pete Docter praises Bird's unique style and storytelling, namely his ability to tackle sociological themes in movies that are otherwise a "fun romp". Bird's passion and attention to detail make him the logical choice to direct the highly anticipated sequel.
Incredibles 3 gets a promising tease from Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter. The third installment in The Incredibles franchise was formally announced at D23 Expo in August, with the confirmation that Brad Bird would return as director and is hard at work at developing the story. Bird wrote and directed both previous installments of the Pixar franchise, which were massive critical and commercial successes, with the original Incredibles winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar and nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing.

Buzz Lightyear takes a villainous turn in Toy Story 5, thanks to a malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear army. Technology poses an existential threat to the toys, but the Buzz Lightyear army adds a different type of intrigue to the plot. Pixar commits to exploring Buzz's potential villainy, offering fans a fresh take.
After teasing one of its main character's villainous side in the first two Toy Story movies, Toy Story 5 is finally embracing this compelling-yet-unexplored arc. Although few details were revealed during D23's announcements for Toy Story 5, it's been confirmed that Pixar's latest sequel will see the toys grappling with a new threat to their existence: technology. Although the Toy Story franchise has tackled a ton of interesting topics, from toy collectors to what happens to toys at preschool, the fifth installment will explore how the generation of so-called "iPad kids" affects traditional toys' experiences and purposes.

Toy Story 5's premise hints at the story's timeline placement, influenced by real-world struggles. The tablet reveal implies at least a 3-year time jump, setting up competition for Bonnie's attention among characters. There is potential for Andy's return due to the time jump, although his absence could also make sense.
Toy Story 5's recently revealed premise opens the door for Woody and Buzz Lightyear's former owner to return in the coming sequel, as well asroughly confirming where the movie will be set in the franchise timeline. Among the D23 announcements for Toy Story 5 was what the movie's story will involve. While actual glimpses of the film itself are still incredibly limited, one released image backs up director Andrew Stanton's declaration of the franchise being influenced by a real-world struggle.

Toy Story 4's emotional ending might be overshadowed by Toy Story 5, with Woody's return hinted at in the new sequel. Toy Story 5 brings back Andrew Stanton as a writer and now also as the director, potentially retconning Woody's storyline from the previous film. The teaser image for Toy Story 5 suggests Woody's reunion with his friends may not be as straightforward as it seems.
Five years after its wildly successful release, Toy Story 4's emotional ending still sticks in my mind, but recent news about Toy Story 5 makes me think the previous movie's conclusion is about to be rendered inert. The fourth movie in the Toy Story series took over $1 billion at the box office, making it one of the highest-grossing Pixar movies of all time. The movie's financial triumph is one thing, but I think its emotional ending to the saga was actually pretty fitting.

The narrative potential of Mars has fascinated sci-fi lovers through history, inspiring alien exploration and discovery films. Mars has been depicted in movies as the most comparable planet to Earth, offering commentary on the universe's vast unknown nature. Films like The Martian and Total Recall explore Mars' potential for human life, addressing themes like authoritarianism and survival.
For as long as science fiction has existed, there have been stories about the red planet known as Mars, and the film landscape has been no different. From movie serials of the 1930s right up until modern times, sci-fi lovers have been fascinated by the narrative potential of Mars as filmmakers have depicted alien stories of exploration and discovery. While there have been many films about Martians invading Earth, there have also been just as many movies that explored the planet of Mars itself.

The nature of Buzz Lightyear's return in Toy Story 5 suggests Pixar is rectifying a key error with the character. Tim Allen being cast as all 51 Buzz Lightyear toys in the movie could be seen as an apology from Pixar. Director Andrew Stanton plans to introduce rogue Buzz Lightyear action figures in Toy Story 5, creating major conflict.
With Pixar finally revealing the first notable details about Toy Story 5 at D23, the iconic animation studio seems to be rectifying a huge error regarding the character originated by Tim Allen in 1995. Buzz Lightyear is one of the most recognizable animated characters of all time, and the fact he's set to return in the upcoming fourth sequel is hardly surprising. However, the Toy Story 5 reveals at D23 did far more than simply confirm Buzz would be coming back. The announcement strongly suggests Pixar is fixing a key regret with the character.

The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.
But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

Inside Out 2 recently became Pixar's highest-grossing movie ever and, riding high from that success, the studio brought plenty of surprises to D23 last night (as we first reported earlier today on Toonado.com).
Pete Docter was on hand to reveal that the studio's first original series Win or Lose will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on December 6.
Directed, written and executive produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, and produced by David Lally, the new series reveals what it feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters - the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire - as they prepare for a championship softball game.
Will Forte lends his voice to the coach and the first teaser and poster have been released.

Back in the day, it used to be, ‘You’ve got a friend in me’. But these days everywhere you look, it’s more like, ‘You’ve got a friend in screens.’ Or so, that’s the gist of Pixar’s upcoming Toy Story 5. During Disney’s D23 Expo panel, Pixar boss Pete Docter hit the stage to give a major update on Buzz, Woody and Jessie’s next big-screen adventure – not only confirming studio legend Andrew Stanton as the director of the film, but unveiling a first piece of concept art too. That image, in the broadest of strokes, indicates what the fifth outing will explore: the notion that kids these days are increasingly more besotted by technology than they are traditional toys.

Pixar took the centerstage at the Disney Entertainment Showcase Panel at D23 on Friday, August 9th, revealing a number of exciting new projects including Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and an Inside Out spin-off series coming to Disney+.
The biggest news of the night may have been the announcement of Toy Story 5, set for release in 2026. The film will be written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who helmed Wall-e, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory. He also wrote the previous Toy Story films, including 2019’s Toy Story 4.
At D23, Stanton spoke about how the Toy Story toys have always tried to be there for their kids. “Their jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head to head with what our kids are obsessed with today: electronics.” He then revealed the below concept art, featuring Woody, Buzz, Forky, Jessie, Rex, and others facing their new mortal enemy: a tablet screen.

Last year, we learned that "Toy Story 5" would be coming to theaters in 2026, but that was pretty much all we knew about Pixar's sequel to its longest-running and arguably most beloved film franchise. Thankfully, though, Disney and Pixar have revealed some more information about the upcoming follow-up at tonight's D23 Expo panel presentation in Anaheim, and /Film's Jacob Hall was on hand to experience it in person.
Andrew Stanton, the Pixar veteran who directed animated movies like "A Bug's Life," "Finding Nemo," "Wall*E," and "Finding Dory," is officially returning to the studio to write and direct "Toy Story 5." This is a homecoming for him in more ways than one: He's spent the past several years directing live-action TV shows like "Better Call Saul," "3 Body Problem," and more, and Stanton was also one of the credited writers on the original "Toy Story" way back in 1995.

Andrew Stanton will direct the next installment of the franchise. Speaking at D23, Stanton said this time around, the toys who have always been there for the kids will find their job cut out for them when they go head to head with electronics.

Disney CEO Bob Iger first confirmed that a sequel was in the works back in February 2023, along with new installments in the “Frozen” and “Zootopia” franchises. No further details were provided at the time, only that it seemed like the new film would not be another spinoff like the Chris Evans-starring “Lightyear,” but a return to the core story centered on Woody and Buzz.

With “Inside Out 2” blowing the roof off the summer box office, Disney and Pixar are all steam ahead on the sequel train. Next up on the slate is a return to the IP that reshaped the world of animation, “Toy Story 5.” Disney CEO Bob Iger announced development on the new installment in early 2023, with a release date later being set for June 19, 2026. At the same time as Iger’s announcement came, Buzz Lightyear star Tim Allen also shared via X, formerly known as Twitter, that he would be lending his voice to the iconic character once again. Though it had been rumored Pixar brain trust member and creative mainstay Andrew Stanton would be directing the 5th entry in the long-running animated film series, his involvement was confirmed at D23 today, in addition to new details being revealed.

Pixar’s next installment of the “Toy Story” series is starting to take shape, as it was officially announced at the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Friday that “Finding Nemo” director Andrew Stanton will write and co-direct the upcoming project hitting theaters in 2026.
Stanton will co-direct with McKenna Jean Harris, who directed the Disney+ animated short “Ciao Alberto” based on the film “Luca.”
Stanton says that in the new film, Woody and the gang will find their jobs to make kids happy facing their toughest challenge yet: electronics. The crowd laughed at a concept art of all the toys looking sadly at a kid gazing a tablet from under the bed covers.
Stanton also revealed that there will be an army of Buzz Lightyear toys that are controlled by computers that will make things miserable for everyone.

With Marvel rolling out the return of the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU at Hall H of Comic Con a few weeks ago, expectations are at a fever pitch for the surprises in store at D23 in Anaheim this weekend. Will guests get a sneak peek at James Cameron’s next installment in the “Avatar” saga? Is footage from “Zootopia 2” or Pixar’s latest original “Elio” ready to seen? With Marvel news remaining relatively lite at Comic Con, will we hear more about some of their larger plans or even get trailers for Disney+ series like “Agatha All Along” and “Daredevil: Born Again?” The possibilities are endless and fans are itching to find out more.
