Summer is right around the corner. The most significant indicator of this for horror fans isn’t in the increasingly warmer weather and longer days but in the arrival of new shark horror.
This week brings megalodon terror in The Black Demon, kicking off a summer of aquatic terror that also includes Meg 2: The Trench and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The latter of which proves that aquatic horror doesn’t solely belong to sharks.
This week’s streaming picks highlight the various terrors that lurk in various bodies of water, from ghosts to Lovecraftian nightmares. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Exclusive: This is a neat casting — the CW Nancy Drew pilot is giving a nod to the TV history of the iconic character by recruiting Pamela Sue Martin.
Martin, who will guest star in the pilot, played the brilliant teen sleuth in the first (and to date most successful) TV series adaptation of the Nancy Drew books, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, which ran from 1977-79 on ABC. She will appear alongside newcomer Kennedy McMann, who is taking the mantle of playing the amateur detective.
Written by Noga Landau, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and directed by Larry Teng, the CW’s untitled Nancy Drew project, from Schwartz and Savage’s Fake Empire and CBS TV Studios, centers on 18-year-old Nancy Drew (McMann) and is set in the summer after her high school graduation. She thought she’d be leaving her hometown for college, but when a family tragedy holds her back another year,...

The late 80’s mostly pushed aside slashers for a return to potpourri poisons; creatures, monsters, zombies and mad scientists shared the spotlight in a bid to woo horror fans grown complacent with mere stabbing and stalking. Out of this stew grew The Kindred (1987), a mostly forgotten mélange that serves as the final (and best) calling card for the directing team of Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow (The Power). Bring your slickers and keep the first five rows clear; things are going to get very messy.
Distributed by FM Entertainment in early January, The Kindred brought in $2.4 million before shuffling off to a home video release from Vestron; some critics praised the effects and that’s about it. But for horror fans who missed it the first go around (pick me!), it offers a fast paced ride through groovy practical effects and a typically, um, heightened performance from Rod Steiger.

All Hollywood stars have to start somewhere, and there are plenty of A-listers with low-budget B-movies in their early histories. A teenage Leonardo DiCaprio made an appearance in Critters 3; Kevin Bacon was a memorable victim in the original Friday The 13th. Then there's Parasite: a bargain-basement sci-fi horror that cheerfully slams together two popular 70s staples: Cronenbergian body horror and George Miller-style post-apocalypse. Oh, and Demi Moore makes her feature film debut as Patricia, who grows lemons.

Inspired by James Cameron's The Abyss, the late 80s brought with it a wave of brilliantly cheesy undersea horrors, Ryan writes...
Hollywood studios occasionally have an uncanny knack of announcing almost identical film projects at the same time. In the 1980s, we had rival police dog movies K-9 and Turner And Hooch. The 90s saw the release of rival eruption movies (Dante's Peak and Volcano), opposing killer space rock pictures (Deep Impact and Armageddon) and duelling insect comedies (Antz and A Bug's Life). We provided a detailed run-down on these rival movies back in 2015.

Corbin Bernsen and his actress wife, Amanda Pays, clearly aren't nesters ... 'cause they're putting their Sherman Oaks home on the market less than a year after buying it. Amanda and Corbin -- best known for "L.A. Law" and the 'Major League' movies -- bought the mid-century crib for $1.275 million in August, and are now listing it for $1.549 million with their realtor, Max Nelson. The classically restored pad has 2,400 square feet in an open-floor concept ... featuring exposed beams and brick.

While Zoom may be the big bad of The Flash‘s second season, the spotlight of this evening’s instalment will be firmly on Eobard Thawne. He’s the villain who took centre stage last year while disguised as Dr. Harrison Wells, and thanks to the mysteries of time travel, the Reverse-Flash is back in the land of the living despite being erased from history.
However, this is a version of that villain from an earlier point in time, and it’s been said that the episode is essentially going to be his origin story.
For further details, here’s the synopsis for this instalment of The Flash (which is titled “The Reverse-Flash Returns”).

This week’s episode of The Flash is going to be a big one, as it looks set to deal with the origin story of the Reverse-Flash, a character who was wiped from history the last time we saw him in the season one finale. If that sounds confusing, don’t worry, as time travel is something which the show has so far done an excellent job of making accessible to viewers.
For more details about what to expect from this episode of The Flash – rather appropriately titled “The Reverse-Flash Returns” – here’s the official synopsis:

Now that The Flash has returned from its winter hiatus, it looks as though fans can expect everything including the kitchen sink in upcoming episodes. Next week’s brand new episode, which is titled “The Reverse-Flash Returns” (yes, his name is now suddenly hyphenated), had fans talking as soon as it was announced the character would be returning. Thankfully, The CW just released an extended look at what is sure to be a white knuckle ride of an episode, which can be viewed above.
One of the many things that will make this episode an interesting viewing is that The Reverse-Flash will be played by Matthew Letscher, whom fans will remember as the true face of Eobard Thawne. This iteration of the character actually happens to be from an alternate timeline and, as Earth 2 Harrison Wells says in the trailer, “This is his origin story.” I have complete faith...

It was revealed last year that Matthew Letscher had been asked to return to The Flash as the villainous Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash, and while Zoom is the big bad of season two, this character is all anyone has been talking about ever since. It’s pretty easy to understand why when you think about it though. After all, the last time we saw Thawne, he was being erased from history.
So, how has he returned? The official synopsis below doesn’t shed too much light on that, but with Earth-2 factoring into this season of The Flash, could he be a doppelgänger? That remains to be seen, but here’s the description for the episode – appropriately titled “The Reverse-Flash Returns!” – courtesy of The CW:

Top 10 Christmas List
As we begin the holiday season, my good friend Michael Connally asked me to put together a top 10-wish list for Christmas.
Cook’s “Top 10 for the Holiday’s” List:
10. Ronin Warriors – DVD Price - $20
I have never followed anime much, but at one point I thoroughly enjoyed Ronin Warriors. It was first introduced in 1988. Its plot centers around the demon lord of the Netherworld who is bent on conquering the mortal world. Standing against him and his four Dark Warlords are the five Ronin Warriors, each in possession of mystical armor and weapons. They are assisted by a young student-teacher, and a mysterious warrior-monk known only as The Ancient (Wikipedia). I found the storyline to be quite entertaining with each warrior’s powers balancing one another, as do their individual personalities. The tale also provides interesting inspiration from Japanese folklore / culture.

It's easy to dismiss a TV show and never look back, at least as far as I'm concerned, because there are always other things to watch, and I feel no real obligation to try everything on TV. It's not my regular beat, and Alan Sepinwall does such a great job talking about TV in the same kind of all-inclusive context that I try to bring to film that I don't feel like you guys need me weighing in on TV in general. But every now and then, there's something worth discussing, and in the case of "The Flash," I feel like it's worth taking the time to say something that you rarely hear from critics: I was completely wrong. Last year, when all the pilots for the various networks started to circulate, I remember setting aside an afternoon to watch two specific pilots. First up was "Gotham," which I detested immediately.

Superheroes have been leaping off the printed page and onto the small screen for as long as television has been in existence, and there’s never been a better time for comic book fans to binge on the TV exploits of their favourite crime-fighting characters with dozens of series either in production or on the way…
Interestingly it’s DC Comics who are currently leading the charge on television, thanks to the likes of Arrow and The Flash – both of which have seemingly changed the way superheroes are brought to TV. No longer are superhero shows camp and Ott, instead they have become much more like the very comic books that inspired them, telling rich stories within huge universes; and thankfully television networks haven’t been afraid to bring the epic “crossover” to the small screen either. Be it Arrow and The Flash and their irregular team-ups, or 90s Flash...

Yes, gaining great power brings with it great responsibility but that does not mean a character cannot revel in the sudden ability to do the seemingly impossible. After a decade of films with tortured protagonists, all in the name of gritty reality, the arrival of the CW’s The Flash series has garnered near universal praise because, for a change, the protagonist is having some fun. Out now from Warner Home Entertainment, The Flash: The Complete First Season is well worth having.
Grant Gustin makes for an appealing and engaging Barry Allen because he’s young and an unlikely hero, who is having fun running faster than the speed of sound. He’s a pumped, hyper-active puppy hero, eager to use his powers for as much good as possible, from helping paint buildings to rescuing stray animals. He wants to do it all and thinks he can.

He’s a pumped, hyper-active puppy hero, eager to use his powers for as much good as possible, from helping paint buildings to rescuing stray animals. He wants to do it all and thinks he can.

Every Television Critics Association press tour generates a wealth of information and announcements about all kinds of projects – and the current event is no exception. What is perhaps different this time is the number of highly anticipated shows that are currently in development, and that we are gradually hearing more about. Supergirl is one such show.
From the makers of Arrow and The Flash – but this time headed for parent network CBS, instead of The CW – Supergirl has a 13 episode series commitment and is an adaptation of the comic book character that is Superman’s cousin. Answering questions at the TCA event, CBS Chairperson Nina Tassler gave the most detailed update of the project yet.
Firstly, audiences have long associated CBS with crime procedural dramas, and Supergirl will be no exception. But, her crime-fighting role will not detract from a solid character arc that is set to play out over the course of the series.

The CW's new take on "The Flash" has been enjoying bringing back various cast members from the 1990s TV series. John Wesley Shipp has been in the new show since the pilot, playing the father of the current Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). In a recent episode, Amanda Pays returned to reprise the role of Dr. Tina McGee albeit a somewhat frostier version of the character.
Word came the other week though of an unexpected return - Mark Hamill as the villain The Trickster. Hamill took on the role of the colorful baddie in the CBS series, and is again reprising the role here albeit in a very different way. According to reports, he'll play a long incarcerated version of the villain whose help is sought when a copycat takes up his former criminal identity.
Recently talking with IGN, Hamill is as surprised as anyone he got the call to return:

A review of tonight's "The Flash" coming up just as soon as I leave some posts on the Science Showcase website... Yesterday, we found out that Mark Hamill would be reprising his role as the Trickster from the '90s "Flash" TV show, and in tonight's episode, Amanda Pays got to play a slightly different (and certainly less friendly to Barry Allen and his friends) take on her role from that show, as scientist Tina McGee. (Here's a brief glimpse of her putting John Wesley Shipp's Flash through his paces.) As much fun as it is to get these reminders of the TV Flash of a quarter-century ago — including Shipp's ongoing presence as Henry Allen — this "Flash" isn't just a nostalgic wallow, but a show that has come into its own with a speed befitting its hero. After last week's fun "Arrow" crossover event, "The Man in the Yellow Suit...

With its first winter finale, The CW’s The Flash “went there” on multiple occasions, including a final wrinkle that certainly zagged when I thought they would zig.
Almost right off the bat, the episode introduced us (as well as a few unlucky guards) to “The Man in the Yellow Suit,” whom from here on we’ll simply dub Reverse-Flash. When Barry and Joe hear of the eyewitness’ account, they realize they’re dealing with the same man who killed Nora, as well as gave Joe a spook a few weeks back.
Barry gets an up-close look at Reverse-Flash himself...

“It really is the emotional capper of these first nine episodes,” The Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells ETonline ahead of Tuesday’s episode. “You’re going to get a lot of answers that people have had questions to – a lot of mysteries are solved – but then just as many mysteries … are opened up.”

DC villain The Trickster was first played by Mark Hamill back in the 1990s. Now, he’s having another go…
Comic book legend has it that Mark Hamill’s turn as The Trickster back in the 1990s The Flash show got him on the radar for the string of Joker voice performances he’s been lapping up in the decades hence.
In a lovely tip of the cap to the classic show, The CW has now snapped up Mr Hamill for a reprisal of his role in their current The Flash series. It will be his second return to the role, having lent his vocal skills to 2006's Justice League animation.
"Mark Hamill returns in a brand new interpretation of James Jesse (aka The Trickster), a role he originated on the 90's 'Flash' series,” said the official announcement.
