The Berlin Film Festival kicked off its 75th anniversary edition February 13 with the opening-night world premiere screening of The Light, Tom Tykwer’s politically charged film that takes stock of German society in the first quarter of the 21st century. It starts 11 days of debuts including for movies starring Jessica Chastain, Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Rupert Friend, Marion Cotillard, Rose Byrne, A$AP Rocky, Emma Mackey and more.

The 2025 Berlinale runs through February 23.

Jessica Chastain gives one of the gutsiest performances of her career in Michel Franco’s “Dreams,” here as a San Francisco philanthropist in love with a younger, undocumented Mexican immigrant who she’s convinced to cross over into the United States.

Emotionally lobotomized by her wealthy scion father (Marshall Bell) and brother (Rupert Friend), Jennifer (Chastain) gives money to good causes and believes she’s contributing to some greater good. Meanwhile, Fernando, a 10-plus-years-younger ballet dancer from Mexico City, is at her every mercy trying to start a life in America after a harrowing journey over the border.

The characters may function metaphorically as stand-ins for the U.S. and Mexico and how those countries, like these people, need each other. But politics aside, what makes the “New Order” director’s latest film, and his second with Chastain after the dementia-addled romance “Memory,” throb and thrum beneath the filmmaking’s...

Some images have become metonymic by nature, reflecting the political problems of today with little to no context needed. Such a shot opens Michel Franco’s newest offering, Dreams, and it is one of a huge truck abandoned next to a railway: illegal border-crossing. It rattles and shakes with the screams of people locked inside, clamoring for help; one already anticipates the dire condition the fugitives all are in once the police break open the back door. One of those “illegals” manages to escape amidst the chaos: a youngish, strong-looking man (Isaác Hernández) whose determination is made clear by every step he takes on that desolate road. We don’t know who he is, but he surely knows where he’s going, and there’s a fierceness to him that overpowers the pain he’s obviously in.

Less than two years after making Memory, in which Jessica Chastain falls for a man with galloping dementia, Mexican director Michel Franco has once again set her on a romantic obstacle course in which nothing, including her own moral compass, runs smoothly. As the monstrously moneyed patron of arts organizations in both the United States and Mexico, she is involved in a passionate but discreet liaison with a Mexican ballet dancer, Fernando (Isaac Hernandez). Separated by status, money, ethnicity and a border that the footloose Fernando is forbidden to cross, these star-tangled lovers lurch towards an inevitably messy endgame.

Do we care? Not really. As a heartbreaker, Dreams is flat and entirely affectless. Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco has arrived in the German capital to debut his latest feature, Dreams, in competition at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

The film is led by Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain, who joined the prolific filmmaker this afternoon at a presser for the flick. The session was politically-orientated, with most questions directed at Chastain. Early on, the Oscar winner was quizzed on political affairs in her native U.S., and her answer was resolute.

“I make my home in the U.S. because I’m a hopeful person,” Chastain said. “I believe you have to participate to create the environment, culture, and society you want. I’m not going to give up on my country. So yes, I would like to say there’s a lot of us there that are still quite hopeful, and we’re fighting the good fight.”

In Dreams, Chastain stars as wealthy San Francisco socialist and philanthropist Jennifer.

The Berlin International Film Festival unveiled its full 2025 lineup Tuesday, which includes new films from Richard Linklater and Michael Franco in competition. Linklater’s Blue Moon, starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott, follows the final days of Lorenz Hart, half of the Rodgers & Hart songwriting team.

Franco’s Dreams, about a Mexican ballet dancer pursuing his dream in San Francisco, reunites him with Jessica Chastain and also stars Isaac Hernández, Rupert Friend, and Marshall Bell. Other competition highlights include What Does That Nature Say to You from four-time Silver Bear winner Hong Sang-soo, screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s directorial debut Hot Milk, and Mary Bronstein‘s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which stars Rose Byrne, A$AP Rocky, Conan O’Brien, Danielle Macdonald, and Ivy Wolk.

The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for the 2025 edition, running February 13-23. It’s the first official lineup overseen by new artistic director and former BFI London Film Festival leader Tricia Tuttle, who succeeds Carlo Chatrian and brings her background as an American journalist and curator to the annual German showcase. She’s also working with co-directors of programming, Jacqueline Lyanga and Michael Stütz, to help reposition the Berlinale’s profile among the great global film festivals and lure bigger-name filmmakers in the process.

This year’s lineup, announced Tuesday, January 21, features new films from Richard Linklater, Michel Franco, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Hong Sangsoo (“What Does That Nature Say to You”), Radu Jude (“Kontinental ’25”), and Lucile Hadžihalilović (“The Ice Tower”). Already confirmed in the mix are “Mickey 17” from Bong Joon Ho and Ira Sachs’ Sundance premiere “Peter Hujar’s Day,” plus Tom Tykwer’s “The Light” opening the festival.

Following last week’s lineup announcement, the Berlinale 2025 has now fleshed out its slate with the Competition, Special, and Perspectives sections. Highlights include the world premieres of Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott; Radu Jude’s Kontinental ’25; Hong Sangsoo’s What Does that Nature Say to You; Michel Franco’s Dreams starring Jessica Chastain; Lucile Hadžihalilović’s The Ice Tower starring Marion Cotillard; and Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Hot Milk with Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps.

The festival will also include international premieres from Julia Loktev, Mary Bronstein, Kahlil Joseph, and more. In terms of omissions for films that potentially could have been a strong fit: there’s no Steven Soderberg’s Black Bag, Wes Anderson’s German production The Phoenician Scheme, nor Berlinale regular Christian Petzold, who wrapped Miroirs No. 3 only a few months ago.

The Match Factory has officially launched sales on Michel Franco’s upcoming movie Dreams at the AFM in Las Vegas, having been attached to the film for the past year.

The second collaboration between Franco and Jessica Chastain, the film is in post-production and Tmf is sharing a first promo with buyers.

Chastain plays socialite and philanthropist Jennifer, whose young ballet dancer lover Fernando leaves everything behind in Mexico to join her in the U.S., narrowly escaping death in the process.

He believes she will support him in his dreams of being internationally recognized and living in the U.S. His arrival disrupts Jennifer’s world, and she will do anything to protect both their futures—and the carefully curated life she’s built.

The Match Factory has launched sales for the new feature by acclaimed Mexican director Michel Franco, “Dreams,” at the American Film Market, and made a promo available for buyers. The film marks the second collaboration between the director and Jessica Chastain.

Variety revealed in July that the Match Factory would be the sales agent on the project (here).

Franco’s “Memory,” starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard, premiered last year in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where Sarsgaard was awarded the Coppa Volpi for best actor.

“Dreams” features Chastain in the leading role, alongside dancer Isaac Hernández. Currently a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, Hernández has worked with the English National Ballet in London, the San Francisco Ballet, and most of the major ballet companies. He made his acting debut in the film “The King of All the World” (2021). The cast also includes Marshall Bell (“Stand by Me”), and Rupert Friend.

Paul Verhoeven's 1990 film "Total Recall" takes place in the distant future of 2084. Mars has not only been colonized, but it has also fallen under the rule of an evil governor named Vilos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox). The planet is rich with a rare, valuable ore called turbinium, but mining it has caused widespread pollution and radiation. Many of the Martian citizens have mutated as a result, their bodies sprouting extra body parts or sporting unusual growths. In many cases, mutants are also mildly psychic. To combat Cohaagen's corruption, a Mutant Resistance has formed, led by the mysterious and difficult-to-find Kuato (Marshall Bell).

The protagonist of "Total Recall" is Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former agent for Cohaagen who had his memory erased and his identity changed. It takes a long while for Quaid to understand what happened to him, but he eventually discovers that he has to combat Cohaagen and help the Mutant Resistance.

Fred Roos, the longtime producing and casting collaborator of Francis Ford Coppola, has died at age 89.

Roos famously found Jack Nicholson and Harrison Ford, launching both actors’ respective careers, and even helped cast Carrie Fisher alongside Ford in “Star Wars.” He is credited for also boosting the careers of Kirsten Dunst, Diane Keaton, Laurence Fishburne, Frederic Forest, Diane Lane, Nicolas Cage, Richard Dreyfuss, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Jennifer Connelly, Billy Bob Thorton, Marshall Bell, and more.

Fred Roos, the Oscar-winning The Godfather Part II producer and longtime executive producer for Francis Ford Coppola and Sofia Coppola, died Saturday in Beverly Hills at 89, four days shy of his 90th birthday.

The news about Roos, who won his Godfather Part II Oscar and later was nominated for Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, comes as Francis Ford Coppola is here at the Cannes Film Festival, 45 years after winning the Palme d’Or for Apocalypse Now. Coppola is in town with his $120 million passion project Megalopolis, which had its world premiere last week. Roos is billed as producer on Megalopolis.

The news also comes after Coppola’s wife of 61 years, Eleanor, died April 12. Roos was an executive producer on Hearts of Darkness, her famed documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now that won them both an Emmy in 1992.

Larry Fessenden, indie horror auteur, is back — with a werewolf movie. But "Blackout" isn't your typical lycanthrope flick. This is more like a quirky indie character drama that also happens to be about a werewolf.

Universal’s monster movie Abigail helmed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett has been set to world premiere as the closing night film of horror fest The Overlook Film Festival, which is taking place this year at the Prytania Theatres in New Orleans from April 4 – 7.

Slated for release on April 19, Abigail watches as a group of criminals retreats to an isolated mansion after kidnapping the ballerina daughter (Alisha Weir) of a powerful underworld figure, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the film’s cast also includes Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Giancarlo Esposito, and the late Angus Cloud.

Dark Sky Films will be giving Blackout, the latest genre film from writer/director Larry Fessenden, a one week theatrical release at the IFC Center in New York City beginning on March 13th, and that theatrical engagement will feature special cast appearances and a Q&a. A couple weeks ago, the shoe company Bull Airs revealed that they had created a shoe that was designed to look like the Blade character from the Puppet Master franchise. (You can take a look at that shoe Here.) Now they have unveiled a new collection of items that are inspired by the Jesse character from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (watch it Here)! This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. An expansion of Fessenden's contemporary remix of the Universal Classic Monster stories (a welcome choice with the failed Dark Universe project on the back burner for the foreseeable future), Blackout stars Alex Hurt as the cursed hairball, with supporting performances from genre icon Barbara Crampton (also appearing at Fantasia in Joe Lynch's Suitable Flesh), Rigo Garay (The Leech), Jeremy Holm (The Ranger), and Marshall Bell (Total Recall) as small-town America's asshole extraordinaire.

Charley Barrett is an artist and struggling alcoholic who is desperate to get his life in order before the next full moon. Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.

Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.

The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

Yellow Veil Pictures announced it has boarded world sales on Larry Fessenden’s upcoming horror film “Blackout,” and also released the film’s first teaser poster. The film, which is currently in post-production, will begin the festival circuit later in 2023 after finishing its photography in Hudson Valley, New York this past fall.

“Blackout” depicts a painter who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon.

The horror film joins Fessenden’s own “monsterverse,” with the New York-based actor and filmmaker’s vampire-themed breakout feature “Habit” (1995) and Frankenstein-inspired “Depraved” (2019).

“Blackout” is the second partnership between Yellow Veil Pictures, a New York City and Los Angeles-based film sales and distribution company, and Glass Eye Pix, an American independent film studio Fessenden founded where he serves as CEO. The two joined forces on world sales for “Depraved,” which was released by IFC Midnight in the United States.

Sony Pictures Classics releases Telluride-darling documentary Julia with a national TV push, culinary events and virtual screenings through November hosted by famous chefs from Alice Waters (San Francisco) and Johnny Spero (Boston) to Jamie Bissonnette (Houston) and luminaries from New York, LA, Philly and Miami.

Directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen talked up the film on one Today show segment, followed by another, where food stylist Susan Spungen made Child’s recipe for pear and almond tarts.
