The Oath centers on married couple Chris (Barinholtz) and Kai (Tiffany Haddish) who learn that citizens are being asked to sign a loyalty oath to the President, with a Black Friday deadline. As if the pressure of family gatherings wasn’t enough, the couple’s tense Thanksgiving dinner quickly goes off the rails with a “looming government crisis.”
The Oath, Ike Barinholtz’ directorial debut, thankfully, is a rather surprising and hilarious under the radar comedy. As October hurtles past the midway point, many folks are experiencing a feeling of dread, one that’s not from worrying over having enough candy for the trick-or-treaters or if your party costume is too scary or sexy (or not enough of either). Nope, it’s because the really frightening events are happening just weeks later. Yes, it’s Thanksgiving, the first of the two big year-end family get-togethers, a day to revel in homecomings and making memories as you pass the stuffing and cranberry sauce. But for some of us, it can be an endurance test as old wounds are re-opened (and often liberally salted). One source of heated conversations post meals and pre-football is the political scene. Mom may try and nix that talk, but it settles in like indigestion. With the dining room simmering and smoldering with tension, what would happen if the government, as the old expression goes,...

It’s called the Patriot’s Oath, a loyalty pledge that requires U.S. citizens to declare allegiance to their country, their government, their President. People do not have to sign it, says a press secretary, but their are “perks” if they do. Like, for example, they won’t be audited on their taxes, or deemed traitors, or mysteriously “disappear” after being visited the C.P.U. (Citizens Protection Unit), an Nsa-sponsored militia in khakis. All the protests and violent clashes reported by TV anchors have turned Chris (writer-director...

Donald Trump won’t be getting a producing credit in Ike Barinholtz’ dark comedy “The Oath,” which opens Friday, but he’s the major reason why the film got made.
“The movie grew out of the Thanksgiving dinner two years ago at my house in Los Angeles,” Barinholtz recalls. “We got into a nasty fight about politics — and we had all voted the same way against Trump. So I woke up the next morning and thought ‘I’ve got make a movie about this, if this can happen at our table, it must be happening all over America.'”

America is a country divided against itself, and can careen through surges of paranoia at its darkest moments, often to a ludicrous degree. While that’s not the most attractive phenomenon, it can bolster great satire. The core premise of “The Oath” almost gets there: Ike Barinholtz’s uneven but inspired black comedy burrows into the essence of these divided times, transforming the all-too-familiar mold of the family dinner gone wrong into a wacky template for exploring the absurd partisanship on both ends of the political spectrum.
Think “The Purge,” with jokes: As the movie begins, impish liberal Chris (Barinholtz) and his wife Kai listen to news reports of an upcoming government ultimatum — all American citizens must sign “The Patriot’s Oath,” a loyalty pledge to the unnamed president, by Black Friday. The pair laugh off the possibility that they would ever commit to such an inane order, but cut...

People become their own kind of monster. Spotlight Pictures has released the first trailer for the indie post-apocalyptic thriller titled What Still Remains, from writer/director Josh Mendoza. We've been getting quite a few of these indie post-apocalyptic films recently, and this one already reminds me of all the others. Lulu Antariksa stars a woman struggling to survive in a world long-since destroyed by disease. When a lonely traveler offers her a place in his community, she must decide if the promise of a better life is worth the risk of trusting him. Also stars Liam Hemsworth lookalike Colin O'Donoghue, plus Dohn Norwood, Peter O'Brien, Mimi Rogers, Jeff Kober, Roshon Fegan, Siena Goines, Chris Ellis, and Tobias Jelinek. This unfortunately doesn't look unique or good in any way. But happy to share the trailer anyway. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Mendoza's What Still Remains, direct from YouTube...

A review of last night's "Mad Men" coming up just as soon as I'm the quick brown fox... "We both know things can't be undone." -Trudy "Says who?" -Pete "Mad Men" has chronicled a period of enormous social change (and taken place in a time of enormous change in television), yet it's often seemed agnostic on whether individual change is possible. Over the course of the series, fashions shifted and opportunities rose for women and minorities, but were the "Mad Men" characters themselves really changing with the times? Peggy has certainly grown, yet we've seen Don and Roger and Joan and others have epiphany after epiphany, only to eventually lean back on their old habits. (And even Peggy hasn't been immune to stagnation in her personal life, even as she's evolved professionally.) If anything, Don's frequent backsliding has been one of the most common complaints I've heard about the series'...

Control, and lack thereof, is at the black heart of Faults, the twisted and terrific directorial debut of Riley Stearns (some may recognize him for short film The Cub). Who claims to have control, who says they want it and who actually wields it are distinct questions the film raises and, over the course of a taut 89 minutes, suggests answers to that are both appalling and somewhat amusing.
Arriving at the heels of some other great cult films – including Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master and Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, which featured a stunning debut performance by Elizabeth Olsen – Faults sets itself apart by crafting two arrestingly good leads.
In one corner, there’s Ansel Roth (Leland Orser), a once-acclaimed expert on cults and mind control who is a step away from living out of his car, having lost his TV show, marriage and financial security in quick succession.

Like a magician, Stearns subtly turns the story inside out. Faults does not feature any gimmicky plot twists or shocking turn of events, the narrative arc is so elegantly rendered that the slight of hand is barely recognizable. Faults deftly delves into its characters' personalities; and while sometimes the constant reminders of Ansel's faults and foibles may seem a bit much -- as if Stearns is mockingly kicking the guy in the ribs while he is already down -- it turns out that the director is quite justifiable in focusing on the cracks in Ansel's ego. So much of this film rests solely on Leland Orser's perpetually unraveling shoulders, but this claustrophobic character study also preys off of the gorgeously muted supporting performances of Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Beth Grant, and Chris Ellis.

Jessabelle is yet another in the long line of Blumhouse-inspired supernatural thrillers that have flooded the market since the success of the like of Insidious, The Conjuring et al. This time round we follow a young woman, the titular Jessabelle, returning to her childhood home in Louisiana in order to recuperate from a horrific car accident which killed her boyfriend – on the very day they were set to move in together (oh the irony). Post-cult trauma is a big thing in movies these days. The topic was explored with chilling preciseness in “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” and the upcoming “Faults” extends that conversation. It’s easy to see why, the ideas of control, identity, and false perceptions are strong fodder for drama and conflicted characters. Mary Elizabeth Winstead ’s career choices have been rather rigorous, knocking down great performances in indies like “Smashed,” “Alex Of Venice,” and now "Faults." The movie tells the story of a washed up expert on mind control who is hired by the desperate parents of a young girl (Winstead) to deprogram their daughter who has fallen in with a cult. However, the gig doesn't unfold as planned, and soon the two are locked in a psychological battle of wills. The movie co-stars Leland Orser, Jon Gries, Beth Grant, Chris Ellis, and Lance Reddick. We debuted the poster yesterday and now the first trailer has.

Indie horror Faults and Venezuelan chiller The House At The End Of Time are two of the films in this month's Bottom Shelf...
Summer holidays, barbecues on the beach and weekends decimated by relentless weddings: this is August for some. For other, more discerning types, it is about Frightfest, otherwise known as the chance to spend those rare sunny days ensconced in a darkened room for a horror movie marathon. This year’s Leicester Square event featured the usual mix of gonzo gore, copycat-killings and premiere screenings of future favourites; we managed to catch a few highlights.
The latest film from writer and director Riley Stearns (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband, fact fans), Faults, received a European premiere last month. Massively enjoyable from start to finish, Stearns’ black comedy mostly eschews the genre necessity of scattergun bloody slayings in favour of an intelligent script focusing on the gaping voids left in desperate characters’ lives.
