James Gunn seemingly reached the nerd mountaintop upon becoming the co-chairman (with Peter Safran) of DC Studios in 2022. Nearly 30 years before that, however, he was just another struggling screenwriter slugging it out in the film industry trenches. Gunn earned his first screenplay credit as the co-writer of Troma Entertainment's "Tromeo and Juliet," which was not the calling-card effort that put him on Hollywood's radar. Late last year, one of the worst-kept casting secrets in Hollywood was finally confirmed when the news broke that Jason Momoa will suit-up as Lobo in the Dcu after previously playing Aquaman in Warner Bros.' now defunct "Dceu."

We got a first glimpse of María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer via set photos when Superman was filming last summer, but director James Gunn has now shared a first official look at the character via a new behind-the-scenes photo.

In the comics, Angela Spica is a heroic member of the super-group known as The Authority, and has a number of powers, including the ability to shape-shift. We're not sure if this first live-action take on the character will have a similar power-set, but we do know that she will be an antagonist to David Corenswet's Man of Steel.

In a new post, Gunn shared a message he received from Momoa when he was confirmed to lead DC Studios alongside Peter Safran.

As reactions (good and bad) from supposed test screenings continue to dominate the conversation online, Superman director James Gunn has just shared a new look at the Dcu's Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi).

It doesn't tell us a great deal about what to expect from these characters. However, it appears to be the same scene from the trailer where Terrific was shown protecting Lois from a squad of what looked to be Lex Luthor's green and purple-clad soldiers.

Though a lot of fans remain a little confused about the decision to give this particular character his own solo project, we are getting a Clayface movie from the director of Speak No Evil, James Watkins, with a script from Mike Flanagan.

James Gunn has confirmed that the film will be set in the Dcu, but it seems the original plan was to introduce the villain in Matt Reeves' BatVerse.

James Gunn has become a name synonymous with the superhero genre, and while he's done other projects outside of the comic book movies - both before and since his big break with the first Guardians of the Galaxy flick - you can't deny that superheroes are his bread and butter. He now turns his attention to overseeing DC Studios' new DC Universe, along with Peter Safran, which will look to start a brand new chapter in the storied history of DC Comics characters on the big screen.

With the official start of his DC Universe coming out in July of this year with his Superman film (which Gunn himself directed) and the second season of Peacemaker also arriving at some point this year, let's take a look back at all of the DC projects Gunn has worked on thus far, and see if we can find a way of ranking them from worst to best.

“Mickey 17,” a dystopian sci-fi comedy starring a dozen Robert Pattinsons, was No. 1 at the domestic box office with $19.1 million from 3,807 theaters. But the Warner Bros. film cost $118 million, a staggering price for an original, offbeat space odyssey — and the kind of swing for the fence that could require a few lifetimes to turn a theatrical profit.

Critics and audiences were mixed on the R-rated “Mickey 17,” whose “B” grade on CinemaScore and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes aren’t encouraging for the film’s staying power. It’s a concern because “Mickey 17,” which cost another $80 million to market, needs to earn around $275 million to $300 million globally to get into the black during its big screen run, according to rival executives with knowledge of similar productions.

Internationally, “Mickey 17” brought in $25.4 million from 66 territories. The film opened last weekend in South Korea and has grossed $34.2 million overseas and $53.3 million worldwide in total.

James Gunn recently reiterated that Robert Pattinson would not be the Dcu’s Batman and the upcoming The Brave and the Bold film would be looking for a new actor to fill the cape and cowl. Several actors have been speculated to be top contenders, with Reacher’s Alan Ritchson putting himself in the running.

Ritchson might be a good Batman (although he might not be the best Bruce Wayne) and might just fit into The Brave and the Bold direction Gunn is taking, but there is another superhero role Ritchson would be perfect for and he has already played it. Alan Ritchson would be the perfect Aquaman in Gunn’s Dcu.

The news that Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, had been found dead sent shockwaves through Hollywood. Hackman had an extraordinary career, winning Academy Awards for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven.

Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator held a press conference yesterday. She confirmed that Hackman died of cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor.

Captain America: Brave New World is trying its best to achieve several milestones at the domestic and global box office despite a slow run. It is expected to surpass Captain America: The First Avenger’s US haul soon, but it will beat Dwayne Johnson starrer DC film Black Adam ahead of that and tonight. Scroll below for the deets.

The Rock’s debut DC film is one of the most expensive films, with a reported budget of $260 million. It was a big disappointment at the box office, failing to break even. It was released in 2022 and featured an intriguing supporting cast, including Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Quintessa Swindell, Marwan Kenzari, and Pierce Brosnan, with Johnson in the titular character. The film also marked Henry Cavill’s return as Superman, but to no avail.

Omni-Man and Homelander might have taken over the cultural zeitgeist when it comes to Superman archetypes gone bad, but comics, in general, have a very rich history of breaking down the Man of Steel into his base parts as a character and then using those parts to assemble critiques and statements about not only the industry but also the nature of power and what the character represents.

Henry Cavill’s version of Superman was perhaps a tad darker than what fans have seen in earlier versions of the character, but it must be noted that it was nowhere close to some of the takes that people have had on their Superman archetype, some of which now Cavill is aware of. Elvis Mitchell of Interview Magazine had an interesting question to pose to Cavill when it came to describing the powers of Superman.

While Robert Pattinson’s side-universe of DC’s famous caped crusader experienced delays, the sequel to his film, The Batman, is finally scheduled to film later this year. All of the waiting has Pattinson joking that he’ll be “old Batman” when cameras finally roll. However, the new Dcu, headed up by James Gunn and Peter Safran, will still need to find a new Bruce Wayne for their in-universe version for Batman: The Brave and the Bold. As always, fans would throw around their casting wishlist and Reacher star Alan Ritchson is a favorite to don the cowl for the new continuity.

It’s official enough that the development of ‘The Batman Part 2’ is turning out to be extremely difficult. The movie was originally announced in April 2022, with Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves returning.

Mattson Tomlin joined as co-writer in August. Since then the movie was delayed two times by two years in total. The film was first called The Batman – Part II but lost its title by December 2024 as Reeves kept working on the script, a script that is, going by the official statements, still not done.

Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell will return as Gordon, Alfred, and Penguin. Filming is set to start in late 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios in England. The movie is scheduled to release in the U.S. on October 1, 2027.

The matter has to do with foreign copyrights to the original Superman character and story. Though Siegel and Shuster assigned worldwide rights to DC’s predecessor in 1938, the copyright laws of countries with the British legal tradition contain "provisions automatically terminating such assignments 25 years after an author’s death, vesting in the Shuster Estate the co-author’s undivided copyright interest in such countries."

A live-action series based on The Powerpuff Girls was in development at The CW back in 2020. The show was meant to depict Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as “disillusioned twentysomethings,” dealing with the consequences of their childhoods spent fighting crime. Originally scheduled for 2025, The Batman Part II isn’t due until 2027. We look at its delays, and why it could still be relevant in two years’ time.

The shoot of The Batman was beset by disease and tragedy. Just as the UK production on director and co-writer Matt Reeves’ superhero thriller began in January 2020, the pandemic began to sweep across the globe. Reeves and his collaborators battled on through delays, illnesses, and social distancing rules; most sadly, its dialect coach, Andrew Jack, passed away from complications related to Covid that March.

Months later, leading man Robert Pattinson also contracted the virus, prompting another pause in filming. “All we did was shoot a day,” Reeves told Variety a couple of years later, “and Batman got Covid.”

In fact, Reeves became so wary of getting Covid – and causing potentially ruinous delays to the production – that he wore a cobbled-together costume of his own to avoid catching it.

Everyone’s excitement for James Gunn’s Superman starring David Corenswet will get even more intense after an insider revealed some interesting details about the upcoming film. The result of the initial test screening proved that it needed more polishing, but in the most recent viewing, the movie reportedly did better than the last time.

This already sounds optimistic since Superman is expected to be the biggest project yet from the revamped DC Universe. The official teaser trailer generally yielded positive reactions, especially after it moved away from the dark and brooding version of the previous iteration.

Upcoming Superman film reportedly promises surprise villains

A popular Portuguese fan site DC da Depressão shared on X, formerly Twitter, some tidbits of what fans can expect in the upcoming Superman film (via Dcu Hype). First off, Nicholas Hoult reportedly delivered a great performance as Lex Luthor.

Initial word from the first internal screenings of Superman was not especially positive, but reports from more recent test-screenings of James Gunn's Dcu reboot definitely sounded more optimistic.

Now, we have a few more details to share. This comes via reliable (or at least semi-reliable) sources, but should still be taken as rumor for the time being.
