This story on Marlon Brando first appeared in the December 9, 2016 issue of of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
It isn’t surprising that the Academy’s early history has become pocked with colorful but entirely fictional lore–stories of landslide vote totals that never actually slid, of a mysterious figure who skulked to the dais and made off with the real winner’s prize, or of various gentlemen who served as the model for the Academy’s statuette.
But myths about the Oscars don’t all date from the early days of the organization. For instance, there’s the question of the current whereabouts of what has often been called the “Brando Oscar.” The phrase refers not to the 1954 award that Marlon Brando received for “On the Waterfront,” but to his second Best Actor statuette for 1972’s “The Godfather.”

Henri Bollinger, a five-time president of the Publicists Guild and a fixture for decades at its signature Publicists Guild Award luncheon, died Monday at the Motion Picture & Television Fund campus in Woodland Hills of complications from surgery, Deadline has learned. He was 89.
Bollinger’s Hollywood publicity career spanned 60 years. He joined the then-Publicists Guild of America in 1957, the second year of its existence.
Recalling those early years to writer Ed Crane in the Publicists Awards’ 50th anniversary program, Bollinger said, “attendance at General Membership meetings ranged between 150-200 members. In those days you were fined $15 if you missed a meeting [held usually at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel] without a valid reason.”
He served for more than 55 years on the Publicists Awards Committee, which organizes the annual ICG Publicists Awards Luncheon held at the Beverly Hilton. He was chairman of the committee for 37 years, retiring from that position earlier this year, though remaining a committee member.

Yet another puzzle picture, that came out on DVD back with the first wave of Wac films in 2010. An expensive romance with Albert Finney and Yvette Mimieux, it was filmed in Europe, co-written by Ray Bradbury and bears the music of Michel Legrand, including an exceedingly well known pop song. Yet it sat on a shelf for three years, only to make a humiliating world debut on TV — on CBS’s Late Nite Movie. It was clearly one of those Productions From Hell, where nothing went right.

As the fifth TCM Classic Film Festival comes to a close today, I want to share my interview with the belle of its opening night ball -- last Thursday's kickoff screening of the 1955 film Oklahoma! at the Tcl Chinese Theatre -- the great actress-singer Shirley Jones. I met up with Jones and her entourage -- Marty Ingels, her irrepressible second husband, to whom she has been married since 1977, plus her manager and publicist -- across the street from the theater at The Grill restaurant shortly after she introduced the screening of the beloved musical that she shot 60 years ago. Los Angeles — Shirley Jones opens the door to her house and appears every inch the ladylike Marian the librarian or sweet farm girl Laurey or cheerfully steady Mrs. Partridge, offering a warm smile and handshake.
Her elegant, modestly high-necked jacket is black, her makeup is discreet and her silver hair tidy. Jones' living room has the sort of traditional furniture and knickknacks (exception: a prominent Academy Award) that would fit any suburban house.
It all adds up to the publicly familiar Shirley Jones, whose crystalline soprano voice and dewy prettiness made her an immediate star in the 1950s film versions of "Oklahoma!" and "Carousel" and who captured a subsequent generation of fans in TV's "The Partridge Family" in the 1970s.
Then there's "Shirley Jones," her new autobiography (written with Wendy Leigh and published by Simon & Schuster's Gallery Books imprint) that turns the 79-year-old actress' image on its head in startling – even shocking – ways.

John Travolta has never shied away from playing the bad guy. But will he be joining the Mob to play one of America’s most notorious figures?
TMZ and Entertainment Weekly both report that Travolta is in talks to play John Gotti, the former head of the Gambino crime family.
Gotti, nicknamed ”The Dapper Don” by the press, was quite a flamboyant figure in American organized crime, famous for his flashy style and outspoken ways.
He was arrested and tried numerous times, but always managed to dodge prison, leading to a new media nickname of “The Teflon Don.” In 1992, he was arrested and tried again on 13 counts of murder, loansharking, racketeering, obstruction of justice, illegal gambling and tax evasion. This time, the charges stuck to the Teflon Don. He was found guilty and spent the rest of his life in prison, leaving behind a colorful and violent crime legacy.
