Before there were horror movies, there were legends. Passed down through oral tradition, our earliest ancestors created colorful fables of vengeful gods, malevolent witches, and ravenous beasts lurking in the darkest corners of the night. Often told to entertain, these spooky tales also included hidden warnings about the dangers of straying from the path, disobeying one’s parents, or breaking social norms. As the years have passed between then and now, so have the stories. Horrific tales of poisoned apples have become whispered warnings to check Halloween candy for razor blades. Trolls lurking in the woods have transformed into a hook-handed murderer haunting lover’s lane.
Contemporary legends are more likely to be shared in an email forward than around the campfire, but their functions remain the same. These tales exist to help us navigate an unpredictable world and their subjects have evolved alongside our cultural fears. We’ve also updated our methods of delivery,...

The slasher film subgenre is often the black sheep of horror movies, typically focusing on cliché teenage characters getting hacked up with cheap jump scares sprinkled throughout. Then, the masked villain is "killed" at the end, only to be brought back in increasingly ridiculous ways in the sequels. Rinse and repeat. It's a tried and true formula that critics scoff at while audiences gobble it up. There is one slasher franchise, however, that is a cut above the rest. In 1996, Wes Craven's brilliant horror/comedy "Scream" revitalized and reinvented the genre. It offered up meta-commentary with scares and laughs in equal measure, with the added fun of being wrapped up in a whodunnit.
By slasher standards, the "Scream" franchise has mostly solid entries, with all of them sitting at a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With the sixth movie taking Ghostface on a mayhem-fueled trip through Manhattan, we thought...

Released eleven years ago, Scream 4 (watch it Here) was the last entry in the Scream franchise from director Wes Craven. We’ve heard some interesting stories about ideas that didn’t make it into Scream 4, like the fact that one version of the opening sequence would have had heroine Sidney Prescott killing a Ghostface slasher right at the start and that Kristen Stewart was asked to participate in the opening sequence that we see in the finished film. Now, during an interview with Hits Radio, Aubrey Plaza revealed that she auditioned for Scream 4 and messed up by getting too into the idea that she could play the killer.
Plaza explained, “One of the earlier auditions I had was for Wes Craven, for the Scream remake or something. They had told me, ‘You’re going in to audition to play a character that eventually you find out is the killer.

A politician’s long night of the soul becomes a confusing debate on the climate crisis in Erik Knudsen’s tiny-budget drama
This tiny-budget British drama, written and directed by Erik Knudsen, begins intriguingly as the government’s energy minister goes awol a few days before the election. An energy crisis is brewing; his phone is ringing off the hook. But he switches off the lights at his detached house in Wimbledon, gets in the car and drives. From his wealth-and-privilege accent and fashion choice of blue jeans and leather lace-ups, I assumed he was a Tory – but, in fact, he’s a member of the fictional left-leaning Independent party.
This is Josh Joseph, Aka JJ (played by David Smith) and the film is his long night – and day – of the soul. There are a couple of interesting moments as he drives north listening to voicemails, and I enjoyed the...

Erik Knudsen’s retelling of the grim Greek myth sparks in moments but is weighed down by its leaden script
Shot in and around Manchester, favouring cobbled alleys and anonymously austere office buildings for locations, this contemporary reworking of Oedipus Rex is a well-meaning but plodding drama. Instead of a Greek king, the protagonist is Campbell, a handsome but brooding young man who has become an executive in the vaguely defined family company owned by his partner Jaz (Miranda Benjamin), a woman 20 years older.
The two are looking into adopting a fertilised egg if they don’t succeed in getting Jaz pregnant. But her brother takes Campbell to meet a “seer” named Tim, who reveals that Jaz is in fact Campbell’s biological mother, rather spoiling the whole happy-family vibe. And on it goes, tracking pretty closely to the narrative as laid out in Greek mythology, but with modern dress...

Slender Man is a creepy, wire-thin figure that needs no introduction. Revered as something of an Internet legend since its inception in 2009, ol’ Slender has stalked nightmares and effectively clawed his way into popular culture thanks to a string of nerve-shredding short films, an appearance in Microsoft’s über-popular Minecraft and even two video games of his own in Slender: The Eight Pages and Slender: The Arrival.
For such a presence in the horror scene, it’s small wonder why it’s taken so long for a Hollywood studio to fast-track a live-action feature film, but thankfully, Screen Gems jumped at the chance early last year. David Birke (Elle, 13 Sins) was appointed screenwriter on the nascent project, and though reports indicated Slender Man would be invited out to play (read: enter production) in late 2016, we now have word that Screen Gems’ horror picture will be ushered before the cameras in the spring,...

Slenderman - the Eric Knudsen-created bogeyman of the internet, who first appeared on the boards of Something Awful - was once rumoured to be the focus of the latest season of American Horror Story. That turned out to be false, but the notorious online nasty has wound up on TV this year anyway.
HBO's Beware The Slenderman is a documentary charting the true-life story of Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, a pair of 12-year-olds who were accused of stabbing a friend of theirs 19 times back in 2014. They were found after the incident in the woods, looking for Slenderman's mansion.

Internet boogeymonster Slender Man is about to bring his terrifying ways to a theater near you. Screen Gems, the studio behind such films as Deliver Us from Evil, the 2013 Carrie remake and the Resident Evil series, has signed on to make a movie based on the lanky meme, this according to ComicBook.com. The site reports that a script has already been written by David Birke, who most recently wrote the Paul Verhoeven-directed film Elle. Slender Man is the creation of Eric Knudsen (a.k.a. Victor Surge). The skinny, faceless being is typically known for stalking and scaring people, often times children. In describing the character in a 2011 interview, Knudsen said, “He’s just taking all those tropes that terrify people: tall person, pale skin, tentacles…when it comes all together, it’s just immensely creepy.” Since being introduced to the web in 2009, Slender Man has spawned video...

Screen Gems, one of the most prolific producers of horror in the business, has carved out early plans for a Slender Man movie based on the haunting Internet meme.
At least, that’s according to a report by ComicBook.com, claiming that David Birke (Elle, 13 Sins) has been tapped to write the script ahead of the nerve-shredding project entering production in the fall. Such an accelerated development timeline would align Slender Man with a release at some point in 2017, though no further details were disclosed at this stage.

Ever since it first popped up onto the web, the internet meme Slender Man has scared up quite a sensation. A few months ago it was rumored that the next season of Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story would feature the creepy character created by Something Awful forum contributor Eric Knudsen. Now comes word that there'll actually be a full-blown movie based on the character.
ComicBook.com is reporting that David Birke (13 Sins) has turned in a script and that Screen Gems is looking to go into production this fall for a 2017 release. Knudsen, who created the character as part of a 2009 forum contest where posters were asked to contribute photos of everyday life that included a supernatural twist, gave Slender Man a backstory when it became an online sensation. Knudsen's lore for the character is that he abducts small children and convinces people to do awful things.

Internet meme nasty Slender Man could be the inspiration for American Horror Story season 6, according to reports…
Us Weekly has apparently heard from an inside source behind the scenes of FX’s American Horror Story series that the show's co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are planning to make the internet-meme-originating creepy character Slender Man the focus of the show’s sixth season.
According to their report, “someone else wrote the script, and [American Horror Story] wants to adapt it to fit the show,” This means they’ll have to “buy the rights” before anything’s officially confirmed.
If you’re unfamiliar, Slender Man is a tall, thin and faceless supernatural character that first appeared in the Something Awful online forums, and was created by Eric Knudsen (who would presumably have to give his permission to FX, too). Slender Man’s M.O. is to stalk and traumatize people, usually youngsters.

American Horror Story, the FX anthology series, just wrapped another successful season. With the end of each season, comes speculation as to what the next one will be about. Every season seems to tackle a different brand of horror. From a haunted house, to a sadistic insane asylum, to witchcraft, a carnival freak show, and most recently a hotel filled with murderous spirits, each season looks to explore something fresh. It looks like Season 6 may focus on the exploits of one mysterious figure: Slender Man.
Oddly enough, the figure known as "Slender Man" man started as an internet meme in 2009. The character took off, after being introduced on the Something Awful forums by Eric Knudsen, and an entire mythos was created.

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. Fans of Syfy's Continuum have been waiting to find out the fate of the series. The show hasn't been renewed yet -- but it hasn't been cancelled either.
Continuum revolves around a female police officer (Rachel Nichols) from the year 2077 who ends up being transported back to 2012 with a group of rebels. The cast also includes Victor Webster, Erik Knudsen, Stephen Lobo, Roger Cross, Lexa Doig, Tony Amendola, Omari Newton, Luvia Petersen, Jennifer Spence, and Brian Markinson.
The show's official Twitter feed recently announced that series creator Simon Davis Barry would be doing a Reddit Ama (Ask Me Anything) in the near future -- "as a thank you" to the fans.
A follower asked if this "thank you" was meant as a goodbye to the series. The response was "Hell no! ;)".

Authorities say a 14-year-old Florida girl was influenced by the fictional character Slender Man to set her Florida house on fire with her mother and brother inside. On Wednesday night, Lily Marie Hartwell's mother went to bed in their Port Richey home between 10 and 10:15 p.m. with her two children in their room. At about 1:45 a.m. on Thursday morning, she woke up smelling smoke and was only able to find her 9-year-old son. After safely getting him out of the house, she re-entered and was still unable to find her daughter. Fire rescue also had no luck when they looked for her.

The Slenderman
The Slenderman, a sort of mythical, supernatural being that has a heavy presence on the Internet, mostly on horror fan sites and supernatural fiction sites. According to legend, the Slenderman is a long, lanky, faceless man who appears wearing a suit and can stretch his limbs to frightening effect. He is also sometimes illustrated as having 4 or 8 long tentacles instead of arms, which he uses to snatch children: his victims of choice.
“Often times it is either reported or recorded that he [the Slenderman] can be found in sections of the woods, and these generally tend to be suburban. He also has been reported seen with large groups of children, as many photographs portray. It is commonly...

When I sat down to watch Devil in the Woods I suddenly had a case of déjà vu because I’ve seen this movie before. I’m confused as to why The Barrens has been released as Devil in the Woods, probably the most confusing part is I’d watched it on VOD as The Barrens in the UK. It’s only a small detail anyway, as Devil in the Woods (as I will call it for this review) is a film worth seeing.

Falling in love with TV shows is a wonderful feeling. There’s the rush of tingling excitement over each new episode. Earlier this year, Syfy debuted the first season of the Canadian sci-fi series Continuum and I fell head over heels. I loved the idea of a time-traveling series with the heroine stuck in our present day trying to get back to her future and having to keep her identity a secret. There was a sense that everything could be snatched away from her for a second time as she struggled to maintain some kind of life as a police officer and making tentative friends and allies. So as we followed Detective Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), we grew more immersed in her intriguing world straddling the police department dilemmas with her partner Det. Carlos Fonnegra (Victor Webster) and her attempts to find a way home with the aid of a young teen super-genius,...
