Two years have passed since the release of musician / filmmaker Rob Zombie’s latest film, his update of the classic sitcom The Munsters, and we still don’t know what he’s going to make next (although we do have a wish list of movies we’d like to see him make). While plenty of movies from the 1970s have since built up cult followings, that does not mean they have not aged poorly in the subsequent decades. Whether due to outdated social and political content, poor special effects, or even outrageous concepts that dont hold up in todays modern cinema landscape, its interesting to notice how much time can ravage an audiences perspective on a particular film. While these movies may have aged poorly, that does not necessarily make them bad, and it's important to view them as products of the era in which they were made.

Salem’s Lot has a legendary status not unlike the vampire creatures that are the chief antagonists therein. While we are finally getting the newest movie adaptation this month after what seemed like an eternity in development and then an unceremonious shelving, the original continues to have a cult classic aura around it. There was a second TV miniseries that came out on TNT in 2004 but the quality of that one varies depending on who you talk to. Even with all the cache that the original miniseries brings to the table, it had been years since I had watched it. It deserved a revisit and make no mistake, this addition to the King cinematic universe needed a remake more than nearly anything else he has put out.

Originally Salem’s Lot was going to be a theatrical experience but Warner Brothers, who had purchased the rights, had a hard time settling on the story and the personnel.

Many things changed in Hope Valley on When Calls the Heart Season 11 Episode 2 after Lucas announced his plans to add a resort and sell his saloon, The Queen of Hearts. Elsewhere, after a mix-up, Elizabeth and Allie teamed up to throw Nathan a surprise party.

Things are still moving slowly as Season 11 finds its footing and how big of a role Lucas will play, but the central mystery and the blossoming relationships are intriguing.

In fact, if you look at the director’s filmography, he had a successful collaboration streak with Jcvd that led to Only the Strong. However, the movie actually fares better without him, because it features a star-making turn by the unanimously perceived underrated martial arts actor Mark Dacascos. Had Michael Cimino not killed New Hollywood with the financial disaster that was Heaven’s Gate, he might have eventually unmasked the movement anyway, exposing this supposedly new style of filmmaking as nothing more than the old way with a dirtier face. His debut feature, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, illustrates this in spades: One of the many intended cash-ins on Easy Rider’s success, the film reverses the nature of other counterculture road movies. Though it begins with sweeping, Fordian vistas and ends in muted, existential despair, the film is less a deconstruction of Americana by the intrusion of the real than a study of human interaction that reinforces, if tragically, its classical formalism and iconography.

As such, the film’s pairing of old and young functions not as a commentary on the generation gap or the trading of an antiquated set of values for a newer one, but as a means of drawing out their parallels.

My Bloody Valentine 4K Uhd from Scream Factory

My Bloody Valentine will be released on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on September 12 via Scream Factory. The uncut version has been newly restored in 4K with Dolby Vision. The three-disc set also includes the theatrical version on Blu-ray.

The 1981 Canadian slasher is directed by George Mihalka and written by John Beaird. Paul Kelman, Lori Hallier, Neil Affleck, Don Francks, Cynthia Dale, Alf Humphreys, Keith Knight, and Patricia Hamilton star.

Special features from the Blu-ray are ported over, including a commentary by Mihalka, a 35th anniversary panel with Mihalka and the cast, seven cast and crew interviews, and more.

Almost an entire generation can talk about their favorite primetime soap opera. The ’70s and ’80s had a fair share of these shows, offering plenty to talk about around the water cooler. One such primetime soap was Falcon Crest. It was popular in its day, with a lineup of big-name appearances. It’s time for a new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1992 sci-fi horror movie The Lawnmower Man (watch it Here) – which was initially marketed as being an adaptation of a short story by Stephen King, until King sued to have his name taken out of the marketing materials because the movie “bore no meaningful resemblance” to his story. In time Jobe becomes noticeably brighter and also begins to fare much better with the opposite sex.

Stephen King’s second published novel, ‘Salem’s Lot, arrived in hardcover in October 1975 and was King’s next step toward transforming himself from an obscure Maine writer to a pop culture phenomenon. His first novel, Carrie, had sold modestly in hardcover, but the paperback edition of the book took off, selling more than one million copies in its first year of release. Sales were also helped by Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie adaptation, which was not just a box office hit but yielded Academy Award nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

And the paperback edition of ‘Salem’s Lot came out right around this time; it became King’s second bestseller in a row and cemented his status as a superstar horror writer. The book, at its core, also posed a simple yet alluring question: What if vampires invaded a small town in rural Maine in the 20th century?...

Near the pinnacle of director-driven ’70s cinema is this marvelous comedy about a ‘American Miss’ contest, and the swirl of personalities that come to support, promote and ogle the teen beauties just learning the ropes of the good old U.S. hype machine. Bruce Dern, Barbara Feldon and Michael Kidd are just wonderful as the adults in charge of the pageantry; Annette O’Toole, Joan Prather and Melanie Griffifth are among the hopefuls, learning an early lesson in a time honored, entirely bogus Americana ritual: as Michael Kidd says, he teaches these sweet kids to dance and behave like Vegas showgirls. It’s deceptively, distractingly funny — and as true as the day is long.

Michael Cimino could have done worse for his first directing gig — a big Clint Eastwood-Jeff Bridges buddy picture with guaranteed major attention. It’s a simple crime caper for simple audiences, and he pulls it off in style. The Sunday movie supplements celebrated Cimino as a great new talent. His picture still looks handsome and it runs like a Swiss watch — the writer-director even has his vulgar comedy down pat, giving bad guy George Kennedy a few memorable choice bits to play.

To this writer, Juliette Lewis is already a legend. A versatile talent whose career has already spanned nearly every genre of visual storytelling for over four decades now, Lewis has given us so many memorable characters over the years, with her recent role in Ma being yet another great entry on her already expansive and impressive résumé.

During the recent press day for Blumhouse’s latest film, Daily Dead had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Lewis about what initially caught her eye with Ma, and she discussed the appeal of working with Octavia Spencer and director Tate Taylor, how much she enjoyed collaborating with Diana Silvers, who plays her daughter Maggie in the film, and what her father taught her about creating compelling characters.

Giovanni Ribisi has chalked up television and film credits every year since he started acting as a preteen in 1985. He’s played a range of characters in a variety of productions, from a doomed medic in 1998’s “Saving Private Ryan” to Scarlett Johansson’s fashion-photographer husband in 2003’s “Lost in Translation” to an officious administrator in 2009’s “Avatar.” He now starts his second season in Amazon Prime’s “Sneaky Pete,” as a con man who has assumed his cellmate’s identity.

Ribisi calls the show’s shooting schedule “grueling and difficult,” squeezing 10 hours of content within four-and-a-half months. He allows that the job requires stamina but credits the writers, cast and crew with keeping him inspired and focused.

Variety first mentioned Ribisi on Sept. 27, 1985, in the cast list of the second-season premiere of NBC’s hit series “Highway to Heaven,” playing a child battling cancer.

What do you remember about...

Horror was so prevalent and popular in the early ‘80s that even the action genre wanted in on the…uh, action. Chuck Norris haiyah’ed a Michael Myers wannabe in Silent Rage (1982), so next up it was granite faced Charles Bronson’s turn to take on slashers with 10 to Midnight (1983), a sleazy yet fascinating trip through the mind of a serial killer. While it’s never as deep as it thinks it is, it’s smarter than it has any right to be.

Released in March, this Cannon production, co-distributed by MGM, recouped its 4.5 million plus a few million more at the box office. Certainly not Death Wish numbers, but it’s not really a Death Wish type of film (until it is). As for the critics, Mr. Ebert called it “a scummy little sewer of a movie”. He’s not completely right, though; the misogynistic male gaze is upended...

From August 4th through the 6th, Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Con took over the Windy City, and Daily Dead was on hand for all the horror-fied festivities. Throughout all three days, this writer served as one of Flashback’s co-hosts, and brought back some highlights from several of the panels held over the course of the convention.

First up is a discussion on easily one of the greatest horror movies of the last 20 years, Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects, between two of the film’s co-stars, William Forsythe and Lew Temple. During their panel, the duo discussed their initial feelings on working with Zombie, collaborating alongside their fellow cast members (including the late, great Geoffrey Lewis), which scenes were improvised, and what it is about Zombie as a cinematic storyteller that has fueled them to return on several of his other projects post-Devil’s Rejects.

Post-apocalyptic films were a dime a dozen in the early ‘80s. They were almost always done on the cheap – a small cast of a few survivors, a barren desert and some rags for wardrobe, and voila! Throw it on HBO for a few years and call it a day. But sometimes ambition seeps in, and Night of the Comet (1984) is one of the best examples of low budget ingenuity, smart, sharply drawn characters, and a whole lot of heart. When the aliens return to take back the earth (do you want to claim responsibility for this freak show?) and wish to be shown a film indicative of the ‘80s, show them this – it represents all the best qualities of the decade’s filmmaking.

Distributed by Atlantic Releasing Corporation in mid-November, Night of the Comet brought in over $14 million against a $700,000 budget, making it an indie success with audiences and critics alike.

Clint Eastwood's mint juleps 'n' murder epic is an easygoing pleasure. Kevin Spacey, John Cusack and a host of great performances guarantee interest, but maybe I have to go to the book to really understand what's going on. A solid 'A' for this one, Clint. Stephen King adaptations are very hard to pull off successfully. For every Misery, there’s a Graveyard Shift; Carrie soars while Cujo stalls. The small screen has had it just as bad—the elephantine The Stand benefits from its four-night rollout, while no amount of time could save The Tommyknockers. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg—at last count, there were 91 King adaptations (I’ll need to double-check those figures) across all media. For this blurry-eyed cathode ray kid, however, nothing has yet to match the two-part graveyard dance known as Salem’s Lot (1979).

Originally airing on CBS on Saturday November 17th and 24th, Salem’s Lot was a huge success for the network; there was even talk of turning it into a weekly series. Alas, that never came to be. However, we were gifted with 183 minutes of measured, chilling suspense and terror helmed by none other...

Every year the Oscars "In Memoriam" tribute leaves out one or two big names who died in the previous year. The Internet noticed that "Godfather" star Abe Vigoda was missing from the 2016 telecast; he just died in late January 2016, but the show managed to include Alan Rickman and David Bowie, who also just died in January. In terms of actors who died in 2015, there was no mention of Geoffrey Lewis, who had hundreds of screen credits, including roles in many Clint Eastwood movies.

Lewis died on April 7, 2015, and -- at the time -- his daughter, actress Juliette Lewis, shared a touching tribute to her dad. So you could understand if she was upset that the Oscars didn't include her father in the tribute. But she kept things classy and positive in a series of tweets and retweets:

You can always count on the In Memoriam part of the show to start some controversy (although, there's already been a lot of that tonight in particular). Dave Grohl gave a beautiful rendition of The Beatles' "Blackbird" during the Oscars 2016 In Memoriam TV tribute, and while viewers watched as we acknowledged all of the talent we lost this year, including David Bowie and Alan Rickman (to name a few), we watched as the montage came to an end without paying recognition to some fallen stars. Jacques Rivette and Holly Woodlawn were two names that people were quick to notice, along with Geoffrey Lewis, and his daughter, actress Juliette Lewis was quick to call it out. With the above stated words, audiences in 1991 were introduced to Double Impact, one of my personal favorite, if not my very favorite, Jean-Claude Van Damme film. Just fresh from the success of Bloodsport (1988), Kickboxer (1989), Lionheart (1990) and Death Warrant (1990) Double Impact was the next smash hit Van Damme had at the box office, making him a household name in the early 1990s. With split screen effects Van Damme is able to portray two roles; the role of twin brothers Chad and Alex.

Based on the Stephen King novel, Salem’s Lot is a three-hour-long miniseries that originally aired back in 1979, with director Tobe Hooper’s slow burn storytelling approach immersing viewers intricately into the world of a sleepy little town in Maine by paying attention to the atmosphere and tension King so cleverly established in his original story. From the guy who gave us The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Salem’s Lot proved Hooper was an assured filmmaker who could still deliver shocking and jarring horror while using a more subtle directorial methodology.

At the start of Salem’s Lot, we meet writer Ben Mears (David Soul), who is returning home to the small town to write his second novel (in reality, it was also King's sophomore novel) based on the infamous Marsten House that he grew up fearing as a kid.

One day well look back and say for as many quality flicks that we saw 2015 was a damn dreadful year. Weve lost so much this year its just about unbelievable. Roddy Piper Irwin Keyes Christopher Lee Mary Ellen Trainor Betsy Palmer Geoffrey Lewis Richard A. Dysart Tom Towles Daniel von Bargen and Wes Craven are just a few of the amazing talents to pass this year. They were all special contributors to our precious genre and theyre all going to be dearly missed.

Earlier this week, veteran actor Geoffrey Lewis died at 79 years of age. Many of the trades ran obituaries on him, some of them including a picture of him with his daughter Juliette Lewis. Upon seeing that picture, three things went through my mind, in this order: Number one: Ah, Him! Number two: Wow, he is Juliette's father? Number three: What a shame he's gone! Geoffrey Lewis had a very remarkable face, with his manic eyes above his often drooping jowls, and it made him very noticeable as a character actor. Its been a few rough days for fans of horror. Its not that there isnt some amazing news hitting the interwebs its just that weve lost two amazing contributors inside of a week. Just two days ago we learned that the lovable and quite dedicated Tom Towles (of Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer and House of 1000 Corpses) had passed away at the age of 65. Today were discovering that Geoffrey Lewis another genre familiar has passed on.

It’s never easy to lose a loved one, and Juliette Lewis is mourning the death of her dad Geoffrey Lewis with a heartbreaking poem via Instagram.

The “Secrets and Lies” actress wrote, “My dad. My dad my dad my dad my dad. My love my dad. My dad. My hero. My dad. My dad my love my loving father. My strength my might. My friend. My hugs. My laughter. My love. My dad. Oh my heart. My heart. He loved us so. He loved us so. So so much. I am forever my father's daughter and he will never been gone.”

Mr. Lewis passed away on Tuesday (April 7) at age 79 of natural causes. And like his famous daughter, Geoffrey was a Scientologist as well as a successful film and television actor.
