Alarum takes a promising cast and creates an unappealing spy movie that struggles to make sense of itself from one moment to the next. The action thriller genre doesn't require much to deliver a satisfying project. However, to make one that stands out, the movie must have some compelling action and a unique story. Alarum has neither.
Alarum, directed by Michael Polish, follows two rogue spies who have gone off-grid and married, triggering a global pursuit by international spy organizations. Set in a winter honeymoon cabin, they become targets as they are suspected of possessing a vital hard drive linked to the network known as Alarum.

Alarum has earned a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score. The new action movie was directed by Michael Polish from a screenplay by Alexander Vesha. It follows a married couple who have escaped their lives as spies and who are being hunted in their isolated cabin by multiple agencies seeking a hard drive they stole, featuring a cast that includes Scott Eastwood, Willa Fitzgerald, Mike Colter, Ísis Valverde, D. W. Moffett, and Sylvester Stallone. The Alarum release is day-and-date, meaning that it is available in both limited theaters and on video on demand.
Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated an official score for Alarum from 14 different critics' reviews. At the time of writing, the movie has earned a score of 0%, which is the lowest score available on the platform. This means that every single one of the reviews was negative, which is reflected by the fact that critics gave it an average rating...

The action movie Alarum combines explosive scenes with spy elements, following Joe (Scott Eastwood) and Lara (Willa Fitzgerald), two former agents seeking to abandon their secret lives. Their peaceful snow-covered honeymoon location turns into a war zone after accusations link them to Alarum, a splinter spy group, making them targets for both hired guns and old colleagues.
The story’s base elements show promise—married agents dealing with treachery while fighting to stay alive—yet fails to meet expectations, as the organization Alarum stays too abstract rather than emerging as a real threat. The constant shooting and explosions lack connection to meaningful plot elements or compelling character development.
The movie tries to mix the polished excitement of Mr. & Mrs. Smith with the raw style of Bourne, yet becomes standard action movie material. The actors, including Stallone playing a tired killer and Fitzgerald as a skilled fighter, could excel, but receive...

There are some types of screen narratives that probably shouldn’t be attempted on limited means, and “international espionage thriller” may well be one of them. That notion is illustrated by “Alarum,” which features Scott Eastwood and Willa Fitzgerald as a budget “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” ex-spies united in an under-radar domesticity interrupted by heavily armed reminders of their past. Michael Polish’s film gamely tries to compensate for unspectacular production values with a lot of action — but its staging is pedestrian at best. Alexander Vesha’s script never convinces, and the competent actors fail to spark, despite Sylvester Stallone’s presence as a reluctantly reunited former colleague.
A prologue in 2019 Prague finds Joe (Eastwood) shot through a window, then overcoming further mano-a-mano assailants who include Lara (Fitzgerald). But rather confusingly, this fracas appears to have been staged so that duo can exit their top-secret careers as globe-trotting clandestine agents, disappearing together into civilian life.

Alarum is the Old English word from whence the word alarm came from. It’s also the title of Sylvester Stallone’s latest film, an espionage thriller whose players include an organization comprised of rogue agents called, you guessed it, Alarum.
Prague, 2019, Joe Travers comes under fire in his hotel room. He takes out the shooter, only to be jumped by Laura. The two fall through a window onto a parked car, where they decide hooking up with each other is better than beating each other up.
Five years later, they’re in Gdańsk, where their plans are interrupted by a plane crash, a crash caused by somebody shooting the pilot and his passenger. Coming across the wreckage whilst Laura is busy elsewhere, Joe figures out what is going on, guts...

Sylvester Stallone is one of the biggest action stars of all time. The actor reached stardom thanks to the Rocky and Rambo franchises, but he has played a series of other roles – mostly those of action heroes – and has had several successful projects aside from these two franchises, including the ongoing series Tulsa King.
While Sly’s cinematic career is not on the same level as it was decades ago, the actor is still shooting movies and we are happy to report that Collider has just revealed the first exclusive trailer for his new movie, which is going to be released in January 2025.
The movie in question is titled Alarum, and in it, Sly will be joined by several other prominent action stars. And while we’re not expecting an Oscar-worthy film based on the trailer, fans of action movies will be more than pleased, and we’re excited to...

May December has received critical acclaim as one of the best movies of 2023 and is poised to make a run in the major acting categories at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards in January 2024. Gracie Atherton, played by Julianne Moore, is based on the real-life Mary Kay Letourneau, who infamously married and had children with a former sixth-grade student. The age of the actors in relation to their characters adds depth to the film, with Joe being portrayed as immature and forced to grow up too young, and the children representing eventual paths of detachment from Gracie and Joe.
The controversial Gracie Atherton (Julianne Moore) in Todd Haynes' May December has a total of six children across her two marriages. In Todd Haynes’ Netflix drama “May December,” the subject of a decades-old tabloid sex scandal is visited by a famous actress set to portray her in a film.
Julianne Moore plays Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who was 36 years old when she was caught having sex with Joe, a 13-year-old boy who worked with her at a pet store. After having his first child from behind bars, Gracie began her life with Joe (Charles Melton), who is now the same age Gracie was when they first met. Gracie and Joe have three children together, the youngest of them about to graduate high school, and are settling into quiet suburban life when Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) arrives at their waterfront home to study her subject and rock the boat.
If the story feels ripped from the headlines, that’s because the film is loosely inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau tabloid scandal of the late-1990s.

Speaking to the press after a screening of May December, Todd Haynes identified himself primarily as an interpreter, both of cinematic forms of the past and of the pre-existing material from which his work is often adapted. That characterization certainly tracks through his filmography, from metacinematic homages to kaleidoscopic renderings of pop idols to his contemporary readings on midcentury fiction.
Loosely based on the ’90s tabloid scandal of Mary Kay Letourneau, who at age 35 served a prison sentence for rape when her sexual relationship with a 12-year-old boy was made public, May December is perhaps the slipperiest entry in that interpretive project to date. Written by Samy Burch, the film examines real-world events through the lens of mass media with a wry humor that masks profoundly complex and painful undercurrents of emotion.

The official trailer for Todd Haynes’ upcoming film, May December, explores a twisted personal drama, reminiscent of the real-life scandal between former teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau.
The film stars Natalie Portman as Elizabeth Berry, an actress who travels to Maine to spend time with the real-life character she’ll be portraying in an upcoming film, a disgraced former teacher who made tabloid headlines for her relationship with a young teen student.
Julianne Moore plays the teacher, Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who has since married and had kids with the now-grown student, Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), having given birth to one of their children while she was imprisoned for her crimes against the then-minor.

"My love, I think about you all the time." Netflix has unveiled a quick 30-second teaser trailer for the film May December, the latest creation from American filmmaker Todd Haynes. It first premiered back in May at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and is next playing at the Deauville American Film Festival in France and at NYFF this fall. Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, a seemingly secure married couple with a huge age-gap buckles under the pressure when a popular television actress arrives to do research for a film about their past. "May December explores one of the great talents of the human species: our colossal refusal to look at ourselves." The film stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton, with D.W. Moffett, Cory Michael Smith, Drew Scheid, and Jocelyn Shelfo. It's set to play in theaters in November before arriving for streaming at the end of the year.

Todd Haynes has a way with female stars. I would even call him the new-age George Cukor in that regard. Whether in Carol with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, or his HBO limited series Mildred Pierce with Kate Winslet, or his homage to the director of so many so-called “women’s pictures” of the ’50s Douglas Sirk in Far From Heaven with Julianne Moore, he seems to be in his comfort zone with women. That has never been more apparent than his latest, May December, a deliciously entertaining showcase for Natalie Portman and Moore (her and Haynes’ fourth film together), which just had its world premiere Saturday in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
The title is fine, but watching the film I kept thinking a really great title for it from Hollywood’s past would have been Imitation of Life from the aforementioned Sirk, not that this movie has...

There’s a postmodernist horror movie about performance as predation hidden beneath the semiotician’s gaze in Todd Haynes’ May December, a complex drama that’s intrinsically intimate and yet also detached, at times almost clinical. The director is poking around in territory that’s familiar to him — self-knowledge and public perception, identity and duality, transparency and performance, social norms and the sexual outlaw. But the emotional volatility of the story ends up being somewhat muted by the approach, likely making this a tough sell beyond Haynes’ devoted admirers.
What will give the film a significant degree of traction, however, are the riveting performances of Natalie Portman and frequent Haynes muse Julianne Moore, as two women at cross purposes, one seeking to excavate the past and another who has spent two decades endeavoring to bury it. An astonishing monologue delivered by Portman into a mirror in particular demands to be seen.

A while back, the CBS All Access streaming service was rebooted and rebranded as Paramount Plus. Since then, the latest Paranormal Activity sequel was released directly to Paramount Plus, and in the not-too-distant future, a Pet Sematary prequel will be on there as well. While we wait for that, the service already has several other horror titles that are available for subscribers to watch. Listed below are some of the Best Horror Movies on Paramount Plus:

On a recent visit to Serbia, actor John Malkovich announced plans to team up with fellow leading men D.W. Moffett and Matt Dillon to build a state-of-the-art film, music and media production facility in neighboring North Macedonia, a small, mountainous country of just two million inhabitants.
It might seem a risky gambit for a country with a modest domestic film industry that services few foreign shoots. But Malkovich – a self-described “son of the Balkans” whose father is of Croatian descent – insisted that the studios have the potential to transform film and television production in the region. Dubbed Stonebridge Studios, the project now awaits approval from the government of the ex-Yugoslavian republic, which according to the studio’s backers stands to gain €1.6 billion (1.6 billion) in Gdp as international productions flock to the country.
While the backing of an A-list celeb ensured the announcement would raise hopes – and eyebrows – across the region,...

U.S. actor John Malkovich is backing a plan to build Stonebridge Studios, a film, music and media production facility in Skopje, North Macedonia. The studio will be the largest of its kind in the Balkans, he said, Film New Europe reports.
The actor, who is presently in the Serbian city of Zaječar, will work with fellow actors D.W. Moffett and Matt Dillon on the creation of the studio, which is part of the Skopje Technology Park project.
In a video shared with Macedonian Radio and Television, Malkovich – whose father is of Croatian descent – said that the project is especially important to him as a “son of the Balkans.” He said he strongly believes that it will be crucial for the country and the region, and will amplify the already ascended Balkan film, music and art communities in every way possible.

Exclusive: Reshma Shetty (Royal Pains), Damon Dayoub (Stitchers) and D.W. Moffett (Switched at Birth) have been cast in heavily recurring roles opposite Susan Sarandon, Anna Friel, Trace Adkins and Beth Ditto in Fox’s upcoming musical drama Monarch.
Created by Melissa London Hilfers, Monarch is described as a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music, the Romans. The Romans are headed by the insanely talented, but tough as nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon). Along with her beloved husband Albie (Adkins), Dottie has created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

Crime Story is a film that tries to sell an improbable story. Though there are some good performances here, enjoyment of the film hinges on the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief.
We first meet our anti-hero, Ben Myers, via voiceover. Richard Dreyfuss's voice is easily recognizable,as is the scene. He's been shot and wounded and is being questioned by paramedics on the ride to the hospital. Briefly, we're treated to what must be his life, and mistakes, passing before his eyes. Claiming to be "based on actual events," we are now informed that we are going to a point in time "12 hours earlier."
Ben Myers is a 71 year-old man. We get this information from the paramedics in the first scene. When we first see Ben, we also see that he is obese. He and his second wife, Nan,...

Worse things have happened to Oscar winners, but it’s still unfortunate to see both Richard Dreyfuss and Mira Sorvino flailing in the inept muddle of “Crime Story.” Playing a semi-estranged father and daughter thrown into crisis mode over a few hours’ course following a home robbery, the stars are not exactly at their best here.
But then the odds are sharply stacked against them, as writer-director Adam Lipsius’ film has the feel of an enterprise whose script wasn’t quite ready for “action!”: Half the dialogue sounds haplessly improvised, with sporadic voiceover narration coming off as an equally forlorn attempt to belatedly cohere a half-baked whole. Such things do not a taut crime thriller make, and “Story” (previously promoted as both “”The Last Job” and “Reckoning”) also fails as a rather maudlin dysfunctional-family drama, among other things. Saban Films is opening the feature in 10 U.S. cities this Friday,...

Amazon’s big buys at the Sundance Film Festival no longer seem like the clear threat to traditional film distribution that they seemed to be a few years ago — and even the idea that streaming services are dangerous feels dated.
That was the key takeaway from TheWrap’s panel “Innovation in Indie Film: From Content Creation to Discovery,” presented Monday at the Sundance Film Festival by ChooseATL and Thea.
“The streaming services are good and as distributors. It’s fuzzy how you put movies out,” said Van Toffler, CEO of Gunpowder & Sky. He noted that Sundance “is much more diverse this year with the comedies and docs, and it’s more diverse to make content now because there are so many buyers and companies that have their own streaming platforms — it’s a good time to make stuff.”
