Halloween Horror Nights time is finally here! The haunt, on both the East and West coasts at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, is among the most popular in the world. We here at /Film know a thing or two about this annual event, but we also know that attending it could be a bit of a hassle. There's a lot of travel, planning, and strategizing that needs to happen in order for an Hhn trip to come to fruition. Unless you're local to either Los Angeles or Orlando, it's not something you can just go to on a whim.

That's why we've created this handy streaming guide. Some of the movies here will be featured at either the Hollywood or Orlando events, while others are more similar to houses based on vibes and themes. Hello, everyone! This week’s Blu-ray and DVD offerings are quite an eclectic bunch, as we have a few recent titles coming out on Tuesday, but we also have a few classic horrors from Mexico finally getting a release, which is pretty darned cool. In terms of the newer horrors, Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece Nightmare Alley is heading home to various formats, and if you missed it when it was airing, now you can finally catch up on the Dexter: New Blood revival this week as well. As mentioned, Indicator is showing some love to two classic horror movies from Mexico—La Llorona and The Phantom of the Monastery—on Blu-ray this week, and Richard Elfman’s Modern Vampires is getting the HD treatment, too.

La Llorona and El Fantasma del Convento: conceived as Mexican horror fables for Mexican audiences, these expressionist gems tap indigenous cultural riches and brooding Catholic guilt. The fable of ‘The Wailing Woman’ is told in a three-part story starting with la conquista; the spooky ‘Phantom of the Monastery’ is a moral tale cautioning against carnal sin, set in a haunted ruin. Ramón Peón, Fernando de Fuentes and Juan Bustillo Oro’s adult approach achieves a true sense of The Uncanny, mixed with powerful social statements. These are separate disc releases: one film is sourced from the only known existing print, and the other is a full-on 4K restoration from prime nitrate film elements. Indicator’s extras tap the best research available on the titles.
