Kukrit Pramoj was the son of a Thai prince. He attended Oxford
University in England and became active in Thai politics after World
War II. Pramoj worked as a journalist and banker while military juntas
ruled Thailand over the next several decades. He starred in the 1963
film "The Ugly American" as the prime minister of a fictional Asian
country. A decade later he became prime minister of Thailand, serving
in that office from March of 1975 until April of 1976. Pramoj's
brother, Seni, also held the position of prime minister several times
in the 1970s. Kukrit remained a leading figure in Thai politics until
his death in October of 1995.
