- Married for almost 15 years to U.S.-born actress Dorothy Gish, younger sister of Lillian Gish.
- In June 1917, Rennie enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, joining the University of Toronto Officers' Training Company along with a number of other actors.
- Canadian-born leading man of the silent screen, the son of a Mormon minister. In the 1920's, he divided his time between acting on Broadway and appearing in Hollywood films for Paramount. His career declined to small character roles after the advent of sound and he retired from acting in the mid-1940's.
- First actor to portray the character of Jay Gatsby on stage in the Broadway production of "The Great Gatsby" by Owen Davis, based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The play opened at the Ambassador Theater in New York City on February 2, 1926, and ran for 112 performances. It was directed by future movie director George Cukor.
