At the beginning of "Star Trek: Discovery," the character of Saru (Doug Jones) was a fearful figure. Saru is a Kelpien, a species that had, for many centuries, been raised as a food source for another, hungrier species. Kelpiens had evolved to think like prey, knowing that they would be, at any moment, hunted and processed into meat nuggets. Kelpiens accepted their fate because of a strange quirk of their biology; when Kelpiens reached a certain age, a series of behind-the-ears ganglia began to change color. This indicated that they were about to become feral, turning from gentle farm animals into vicious killers. To prevent this, Saru planned on committing ritual suicide.
It turned out, however, that Kelpien transformation was mere propaganda. When Saru reached maturity, his ganglia fell off, and he was suddenly more confident and open. He went from being fearful all the time to being frank, friendly,...

Star Trek: Discovery showed the opposite of J.J. Abrams' destruction of both Vulcan and Romulus in Star Trek (2009). In Star Trek's 2009 reboot, Vulcan is destroyed by Romulan time traveler Nero (Eric Bana), whose home planet of Romulus was annihilated when its star went supernova in 2387. Nero mistakenly blames Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) for the loss of Romulus, so Nero goes back in time to make a younger Spock (Zachary Quinto) witness the destruction of Spock's own home planet Vulcan. Star Trek (2009) shows Romulus' destruction in Star Trek's Prime Timeline and makes a major plot point of Nero's red matter attack blowing up Vulcan in J.J. Abrams' alternate Kelvin Timeline.
Star Trek on Paramount+ series incorporate J.J. Abrams' invention of the Romulan supernova in the Prime Timeline. When Star Trek was released in 2009, Nero's point of origin in 2387 was past the "present" point of the Star Trek timeline: Star Trek: Nemesis,...

Star Trek celebrates strong female characters in leadership roles, reflecting a vision of equality in a futuristic utopia. Iconic women like Lt. Uhura and Captain Burnham have paved the way for diversity and inclusivity in the Star Trek universe. From powerful captains to clever doctors and empathetic counselors, the women of Star Trek bring compassion, intelligence, and strength.
Star Trek has introduced an incredible cast of truly amazing women throughout its nearly 60-year history. In the utopian future of Star Trek, women can climb the ranks of Starfleet to achieve the same positions of authority as their male counterparts. While this ideal was somewhat hindered by the landscape of the 1960s, modern Star Trek fully embraces Gene Roddenberry's vision of a peaceful future where all kinds are welcome. From Lt. David Ajala shared his emotional experience filming the heartfelt scene in Star Trek: Discovery's series finale epilogue. Star Trek: Discovery's ending reveals Leto Burnham-Booker as a young Starfleet Captain, comparable to Captain James T. Kirk's early career success. Leto follows in the footsteps of his mother, Captain and, later, Admiral Michael Burnham. Leto made Captain younger than Michael Burnham did, but Chris Pine's Kirk in Star Trek (2009) did it faster.
One detail from Star Trek: Discovery's ending makes Captain Leto Burnham-Booker (Sawandi Wilson), the son of Admiral Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), like Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise, and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Discovery's emotional coda warped the saga to the 33rd century, showing how Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) lived a happy life together. One big surprise is they have a fully grown son, Leto, who just became a Starfleet Captain.

Star Trek: Discovery missed an opportunity by only showing glimpses of Saru and T'Rina's wedding in the series finale. The wedding could have highlighted the show's focus on character growth and relationships, particularly Saru and Burnham's friendship. Despite constraints, a full episode dedicated to the wedding could have been a satisfying and celebratory ending to the series.
It would have been a great idea for Star Trek: Discovery to spend more time at the wedding of Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling), and I wish a whole episode was devoted to their nuptials. The glimpses of Saru and T'Rina's promised nuptials in Star Trek: Discovery's series finale, "Life, Itself", were far too brief, with no time devoted to the ceremony itself. Star Trek: Discovery's series finale sets up a new spin-off at Starfleet Academy, and Tilly wants to start a mentorship program. Characters like Dr. Culber, Commander Nhan, and Cleveland Booker could serve as mentors for future cadets. Captain Burnham's past experiences and passion for Starfleet make her a great potential mentor for young cadets.
In Star Trek: Discovery's series finale, Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) had the idea to start a mentorship program at Starfleet Academy, and several Discovery characters would make great mentors. With the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery concluded. But that doesn't mean Star Trek is finished with Discovery's 32nd-century setting. The upcoming Discovery spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, will take place in this far future, following a class of young cadets adapting to life in the Federation after the Burn.

After five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery, the series that launched a new era of Star Trek programming on television, has come to an end with the finale “Life, Itself.” Leaning heavily on the science fiction action and prominently connecting with Star Trek elements introduced in the ‘90s, Discovery’s fifth and final season brought the adventures of Starfleet officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to a satisfying close. Saru makes a long-awaited return to Starfleet Headquarters in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 9, "Lagrange Point", and Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) fills Saru in on what he missed. The USS Discovery is caught in a potentially volatile situation at the site...

The cramped quarters of the USS Discovery bridge have felt oddly spacious lately, haven't they? As "Star Trek: Discovery" swoops in for a landing with its fifth and final season drawing to a definitive close, viewers may have noticed that several side characters remain missing in action. Essential crew members such as Lieutenant Commanders Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) haven't been seen since episode 4's "Face the Strange," whisked away on a mission to pilot the mirror-universe starship Iss Enterprise to safe harbor. For a series that has drawn so much emotional bandwidth out of its supporting cast over the years, watching Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) deliver orders and offer encouragement to stand-in officers we've never met before can't help but feel ... off.

This Star Trek: Discovery review contains spoilers.
After a couple of extremely mediocre installments (particularly given that this is the show’s final season), Star Trek: Discovery bounces back to excellent form with “Erigah,” a tense and surprisingly political hour that finally gives the season-long Progenitors clue hunt some higher and more immediate stakes. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s the first episode in ages that’s had genuine tension—sorry, “Whistlespeak,” we all knew nothing was actually going to happen to Tilly—and a plot that wasn’t immediately predictable from the jump.
Look, I still don’t care all that much about the desperate interspecies Romeo & Juliet vibes this show seems to want to believe Moll and L’ak possess, but unlike the clunky flashback hour that broke down their backstory, “Erigah” makes the wise decision to turn their relationship into a political flashpoint that...

Star Trek: Discovery reintroduces Vulcan with the new name Ni'Var, uniting Vulcans and Romulans in peace under one planet. The name Ni'Var originated in Star Trek fanzines in the 1960s, representing two forms coming together in unity. Ni'Var is a deep-cut reference to Star Trek: Enterprise, where it was used as the name of a Vulcan starship in the 22nd century.
Star Trek: Discovery gave the planet Vulcan a new name, Ni'Var, which is a deep-cut reference to Star Trek: Enterprise and goes even further back in Star Trek's storied history. Saru has been conspicuously absent from several episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5. The missed opportunity to focus on Saru's wedding with T'Rina as a subplot in season 5 is a mistake. The absence of Saru, a main character, is a sad development for Discovery's final season.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 has completely sidelined Saru (Doug Jones) which is disappointing for the show's final season. Discovery season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak," which was written by Kenneth Lin and Brandon Schultz and directed by Chris Byrne, saw the USS Discovery and her crew continue their search for the Progenitor's technology on the planet Halem'no, where Captain Michael Burnham (Soneqa Martin-Green) and Lieutenant Slyvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) were forced to break the Prime Directive to save the planet's inhabitants. However, for yet another episode, one important character was noticeably absent from the show's ensemble.

With an ensemble cast as large as the one in "Star Trek: Discovery," it can't be easy to find a way to give each and every major character their own moment to shine. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is all but guaranteed to play a significant role in any given episode, naturally, as is David Ajala's Cleveland Booker. Recent seasons have even committed to shining a brighter spotlight on the supporting cast at large, devoting much more screen time and emotional heavy-lifting to characters like Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz), and Adira (Blu del Barrio). But Doug Jones' charismatic performance as the even-keeled Saru has always helped elevate "Discovery" to greater heights, serving much of the same narrative and thematic purpose as classic franchise characters like Spock or Data.

Throughout Discovery, Saru has had an incredibly compelling story arc as he grew in confidence, eventually embracing the role of captain. Saru's friendship with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), his relationships with the other crew members of the USS Discovery, and his budding romance with Ni'Var President T'Rina...

The romance between Captain Saru and President T'Rina will continue in season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery says Doug Jones. Doug Jones, who plays Saru, learned about the show's cancellation while on the Star Trek Cruise in February 2023. The slow-burn love story between Saru and T'Rina is based on compassion, understanding, and their desire to do the right thing.
Star Trek: Discovery's Doug Jones promises that the fan-favorite romance between Captain Saru and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) will continue in season 5. Like the rest of Star Trek: Discovery's cast and crew, Jones had no idea that season 5 would be the final season, and Doug learned Discovery was canceled while he was on the Star Trek Cruise in February 2023. After reshoots were completed to add an epilogue at the end of Discovery's season 5's finale, Jones saw it and said it gave him "closure."

Apple TV+ renewed Silo for a second season, but a production delay may mean fans have to wait until late 2024 or early 2025. While waiting, fans can watch Beacon 23 on MGM+, a sci-fi show with a similar premise to Silo, which is already renewed for a second season. Beacon 23 season 2 will be released in April 2024, months before Silo season 2 likely premieres.
Apple TV+ renewed Silo for a second season, but it might be a while before it releases, so fans should check out another science fiction series that serves as the perfect replacement for the Rebecca Ferguson-led drama. Season 1 of the dystopian show premiered in May 2023 and received positive reviews from critics, resulting in Apple TV+ ordering a second season. The cast and crew began filming in late June (around the time of the season 1 finale) but had to pause production due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. They...

Doug Jones' portrayal of Captain Saru in Star Trek: Discovery has made the character one of the most interesting and likable in the franchise's current era. As a Kelpien, Saru has unique abilities and was the first of his kind to leave his planet and serve in Starfleet. Doug Jones has had a successful career playing aliens and monsters, working with renowned director Guillermo del Toro and appearing in films like The Shape of Water.
As one of the most popular characters on Star Trek: Discovery, Doug Jones' Captain Saru has left his mark on the Star Trek franchise. Introduced in the pilot episode of Discovery, Saru is a member of the Kelpien species and the first of his kind to leave his planet Kaminar. Star Trek is famed and beloved for how its characters grow and change. Whether Star Trek's TV series are episodic like Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, or serialized like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, the franchise has introduced countless beloved characters who have strived to better themselves. Earth may be a Utopia in Star Trek's future, but the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet's Officers continually seek to improve themselves and the rest of humanity.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the first Star Trek series to embrace serialization, and its dozens of characters underwent stunning evolutions. DS9 bucked the TV trend of its era where characters must 'reset' at the end of each episode, and the series centering on Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) foresaw the direction television would take in the 21st century.

Some of Star Trek's greatest characters are Vulcans. The most logical race in the galaxy, the Vulcans are the seminal alien species of the Star Trek franchise, and they are arguably the most beloved aliens. Although humans in the Star Trek universe can find Vulcans cold, distant, and difficult to get along with, the best among the Vulcans are highly intelligent, loyal, and brave as they use logic to suppress their raging emotions within.
Many of the defining characteristics of Vulcans were created by Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series. Nimoy innovated iconic Vulcan trademarks like the "Live long and prosper" hand gesture and the Vulcan nerve pinch. Vulcans have played pivotal roles in the affairs of the Star Trek universe and in many Star Trek TV series and movies.
