A Different Man (Aaron Schimberg)
There are a lot of ways A Different Man could go and a lot of things it could be. Aaron Schimberg’s uniquely uncomfortable, uncomfortably unique feature sometimes plays as a reverse-Frankenstein medical horror, a tragic life-imitates-art satire, and a spiraling relationship drama. To its ambitious and distinct credit, it attempts packaging them all into ominous-sounding harmony, as if Charlie Kauffman’s surrealist Escher concoctions became a Twilight Zone episode modeled after David Lynch’s Elephant Man or Beauty and the Beast. It’s a dark, hilarious, and deeply unsettling portrait of a disfigured man that’s also an unflinching mirror of a looks-focused industry. – Jake K. (full review)

Most of Wild Wild West plays exactly in the way you would expect, as a uglier, less charismatic version of Men in Black. Sure, Will Smith still has his ineffable cool and Kevin Kline’s always lovable, even when playing a motor-mouthed and egotistical inventor. But the two just don’t click like Smith did with Tommy Lee Jones, and Barry Sonnenfeld’s direction feels forced and mechanical instead of electric. So when Smith’s secret agent Jim West and Kline’s U.S. Marshal Artemus Gordon find the secret lab of mad scientist Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh), the audience feels just as unimpressed as the characters. As the exhausted duo mocks Loveless’s offerings, they ask “What has he got?” listing off his failures. The same question could be posed to Wild Wild West, with its garish set-pieces and flat humor.

Bradley Cooper’s stellar record of 12 Oscar nominations has cemented his status as one of Hollywood’s elite. But despite being constantly praised for his exceptional work, he is one of the most nominated people in Oscar history without having received a single victory.
Apparently, he is not able to capitalize on any of his three Oscar nominations this year for writing, producing, and acting in the Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro. This means he has now dropped close to a record-breaking twelve nominations over the course of his career. It appears that he has joined a Hollywood unlucky club, as his acting career has soured with an unfair zero Oscar wins despite 12 nominations.

“The Silence of the Lambs” executive producer Gary Goetzman has been a major player in Hollywood for the last four decades (especially after he followed that Best Picture-winner by co-founding Playtone with Tom Hanks in 1998), but many in and around the film industry were unfamiliar with his story until Paul Thomas Anderson made a movie about it. “That was some version of my story, at least,” Goetzman chuckled when I asked him about “Licorice Pizza” during a recent Zoom interview from his office in Los Angeles, where he’s putting the finishing touches on “Masters of the Air,” a high-altitude Apple miniseries in the tradition of “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” “So many events in ‘Licorice Pizza,’ are true, but everything around it is kind of not.”
Specifics notwithstanding, Anderson’s coming-of-age comedy — set in the San Fernando Valley circa 1973 and starring Cooper Hoffman as 15-year-old “Gary Valentine” — certainly...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s funniest film yet makes stars of newcomers Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim as unlikely lovers in 1970s LA
50 best films of 2022 in the UKMore on the best culture of 2022
Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film is a love story set in 1973, and far too interesting and complicated to be called “coming-of-age”. A grinningly fast-talking 15-year-old boy meets a bored 25-year-old woman who works as assistant to a photographer taking pictures for the high-school yearbook. She is in equal parts amused, intrigued and depressed when this kid starts hitting on her and she realises that she is somehow interested in him.
Anderson makes glorious movie stars of his two newcomers. Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, is eerily assured as Gary Valentine, a heavy-set kid with iffy skin whose child-actor career in TV and movies is coming to an end, and is therefore turning...

In “Licorice Pizza,” a teenage boy perpetually chasing after new business schemes falls for a 20-something woman who’s not quite sure where she’s heading, but is up for the ride.
Together, Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) and Alana Kane (Valley native Alana Haim) travel around Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley by car, truck and on foot. Their ventures into showbiz and local politics have them cross paths with a cast of vibrant characters, including a belligerent hairdresser and motorcycle-riding movie star.
Gary and Alana’s indelible bond and the series of events that transpire make “Licorice Pizza” an enjoyable watch. But the film promises an extra element of nostalgic joy for those who grew up in the Valley or during the 1970s (or both). Several of the events, people and places represented in the story are modeled on reality.

It’s that time again, dear readers: the Streaming Wars have kicked off in 2022!
Throughout 2021, as you will no doubt recall from 2021 Streaming Wars entries I, II, III and IV, Netflix saw a dip in Streaming Video On Demand (SVOD) search engagement in the U.S., according to our pals at JustWatch. It remained, by far, the dominant streaming option for JustWatch interest, but its lead was slipping as a series of new streamers created by some of the biggest studios reclaimed their own content from Netflix to lure new subscribers.
Well, JustWatch has supplied some fascinating insights into user trends for the first quarter of the new year, and the standout issue is this: Netflix has just a 4 advantage over its closest competitor, Amazon Prime Video, in terms of SVOD engagement on the site! It’s still leading the charge with a plurality of engagement, 23 of all JustWatch searches.

Since making his feature directing debut with “Hard Eight” (1996), Paul Thomas Anderson has proven his versatility and unique artistry with eight subsequent films, all of which he also wrote. Over the past two dozen years, he has been nominated 11 times across four Oscar categories, with his three most recent bids having come for directing, writing and producing 2021’s “Licorice Pizza.” This marks his third inclusion in a Best Director lineup after landing bids for “There Will Be Blood” (2007) and “Phantom Thread” (2017).

In this year’s directing race, Anderson faces Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”), Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”) and Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”). Hamaguchi is the only first-timer in the bunch, while Spielberg is the only previous directing winner, having triumphed for both “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998); this is his eighth nomination in the category.

I think I would watch it every day, twice a day, if I thought I could get away with it. The sheer pleasure of this film is somehow not directly connected with performances, or narrative, or genre (the genre here is almost impossible to pin down) but with its pure texture, which is sensual and sublime. It’s a film which has, in Chuck Berry’s words: no particular place to go, but there’s joy in the journey, the sheer film-making bravura. Tellingly, one of the key scenes concerns a truck...

Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza" is one of the best films of 2021. The hilarious coming-of-age romance features breakout performances from its two young stars, 15-year-old Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim (who grew up working with Anderson). The pair captures the complicated emotions that come with an untraditional relationship. "Licorice Pizza" explores all the exciting highs and devastating lows of young love.
Anderson's film celebrates L.A. culture in the 1970s. It follows child actor Gary Valentine (Hoffman) as he builds his career and falls in love with a photographer named Alana Kane (Haim). Gary gets Alana to accompany him on his promotional tour in New...

After Yang (kogonada)
Following his serenely stunning drama Columbus, video-essayist-turned-director kogonada headed to the future with After Yang. The gorgeous, moving drama about what makes up a family premiered at last year’s Cannes (where our own Rory O’Connor was mixed) and after a few tweaks recently landed at Sundance, where it received quite a rapturous response. Starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, Justin H. Min, Sarita Choudhury, Haley Lu Richardson, and Clifton Collins Jr., it follows Farrell as Jake, a father who attempts to repair the malfunction Yang, an android that was a companion to his young daughter. In his second feature, kogonada perfectly depicts quite a seemingly realistic near-future while still retaining the peaceful artistic sensibilities of his debut.

Starring Alana Haim in her breakout role, "Licorice Pizza" is about Alana Kane and Gary Valentine as they experience first love and growing up in the 1970s in California's San Fernando Valley. It stars Cooper Hoffman (the son of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman) as her love interest, as well as Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie. The movie had a limited release in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 26, 2021, followed by a nationwide theatrical release on Dec. 25, 2021. It is now nominated for three Academy Awards, including best picture and best original screenplay, and has received critical acclaim. The National Board of Review called it "the best film of 2021." So, ahead of the Oscars on March 27, is "Licorice Pizza" streaming for those who didn't get to see it in theaters?

Though Alana Haim has been working with Paul Thomas Anderson for years as he directed music videos for her band Haim, their connection actually goes back further than either of them knew: Her mother, Donna, was Anderson’s art teacher in grade school.
“Every time Paul’s movies would be on TV, she’d be like, ‘You know, I taught him.’ And we’d be like, ‘Mom, what are you talking about? Like, there’s no way!’” Haim says with a laugh. “I mean, my mom’s not a liar, but it’s kind of outrageous.” Even when Anderson began directing Haim videos, with Alana and her sisters Este and Danielle, they didn’t bring it up, not sure how he might feel about his former teacher. Then one day, one of the Haim sisters (Alana believes it was Este) blurted it out. Anderson has said that though he hadn’t figured out the connection,...

Anderson crafts an offbeat love story that manages to be sweet, hilarious, absurd – and wholly believable
There’s something propulsively intoxicating about the films of Paul Thomas Anderson. Watching Punch-Drunk Love left me in exactly the state described by the title; Inherent Vice demanded to be inhaled rather than watched; I wanted to wrap myself in the poisonous couture of Phantom Thread. Anderson’s latest takes its title from a hip record store (reportedly named after an Abbott and Costello gag), and appropriately enough the result spun me round like a record. This is heady stuff, an evocation of the San Fernando valley in the early 70s, as personally nostalgic as George Lucas’s American Graffiti, albeit with an insanely adventurous edge.
Screen newcomer Cooper Hoffman (son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) is Gary Valentine, a high-schooler with a Brian Wilson haircut who’s also a child actor and go-getting entrepreneur.

Featuring potentially star-making turns from Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim, Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, Licorice Pizza, is not only one of the director’s more interesting character-driven films, but also possibly one of his best.
With Licorice Pizza, Anderson takes a stab at the portrayal of young love in the San Fernando Valley, circa the early 1970s. Specifically, the story centers around Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) and Alana Kane (Alana Haim) as they meet, fall in love, have relationship problems, make up (sort of), and seemingly move on together with their lives.
As with many of his other films, Anderson wears more than one hat in addition to directing Licorice Pizza. He is also the writer of the screenplay as well as a co-cinematographer (along with Michael Bauman). That kind of hands-on involvement permeates the film throughout and gives it a cohesive feel from beginning to end. Much...

Even though many families exchange their presents on the night before the big day, the best Christmas present may just be unwrapped the afternoon of the 25th, at least for movie fans of a “certain age”. Yes see, that’s when this nostalgic gem will spread across the country’s theatres. It’s hard to fathom that its setting is almost fifty years ago, but its director/writer has made his mark by meticulously recreating the past. Plus he’s particularly adept at getting the presiding pop culture touches just right. And he’s not just “churning them out” as we haven’t seen a feature from him in the last four years. So, instead of munching down a slice of pie or cake after the big holiday meal, savor a sweet and salty ( and a bit tart) slice of Licorice Pizza.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson makes movie stars out of Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman in this deliriously entertaining evocation of Southern California in the 1970s. Part awkward romance, part growing-up-on-the-fringes-of-Hollywood comedy and part nostalgia-fused hangout, it’s one of the best films of the year.
Named after a beloved San Fernando Valley record store, Anderson’s ninth feature film Licorice Pizza takes place in Encino, California in the early 1970s. Watching “Licorice Pizza,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s cinematic love letter to 1970s San Fernando Valley, one thought continually played in my head: Alana Haim reminds me of me. I don’t mean that in any solipsistic sense — I possess zero singing talent and my ability to play a musical instrument is confined to a year of violin and flute lessons in fourth grade wherein both instructors urged me to focus on the literary arts. It also has nothing to do with looks. While Haim is long and lean with straight, whiplash hair, I’ve got a rat’s rest of curls and a physique resembling my zaftig great-grandmother who birthed 11 children on a remote Ukrainian farm. Haim is newly 30; I’m in my 40s. But watching Haim on screen, there was something — an energy, a spirit, a nervy yet self-assured emotional current that felt not only familiar — but familial. I...

"You in football country now!" Netflix has revealed the official trailer for Home Team, the next comedy produced by Sandler's Happy Madison for Netflix. So, uh, get ready for this... The story about New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton coaching his son's 6th grade football team, when Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 season as a result of his role in the Saints' Bountygate scandal. So this is pretty much the plot of The Mighty Ducks, but with a youth football team. And a real coach. The cast features Kevin James as Coach Payton, plus Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, Jackie Sandler, Gary Valentine, Tait Blum, Maxwell Simkins, Jacob Perez, Bryant Tardy, Manny Magnus, Liam Kyle, Christopher Farrar, Merek Mastrov, and Isaiah Mustafa. Yeah this looks as cheesy and bland as you're probably expecting. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Charles Francis Kinnane & Daniel Kinnane's Home Team, from YouTube:...

Bradley Cooper and Sean Penn are movie stars who share a great admiration for each other, and it took a great director to bring them together. That director happens to be Paul Thomas Anderson’s whose latest movie, ‘Licorice Pizza’ is now playing. ‘Licorice Pizza’ is a drama-comedy coming of age story. It revolves around Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up and running around and going through the scary thing called first love in the San Fernando Valley in 1973. Anderson also wrote the film. The film is currently playing in select theaters. Bradley Cooper has always looked up to Sean Penn and was even filmed on Inside the Actors Studio back in the day asking him a question. And when Cooper directed A Star Is Born, Penn went on his little press tour promoting how good the movie was and put Cooper over. And now they’re finally in the same film together.

Sean Baker’s Red Rocket, the highest-profile specialty opening to report numbers this weekend (i.e. not distributed by a streamer) posted a solid $96,953 for a per screen average of $16,158 in six theaters in New York/Los Angeles. Critics are calling the film about a washed up porn star returning to his hostile Texas hometown audacious and uproariously funny led by an explosive performance from star Simon Rex, and it is. The weekend saw sold out Q&a appearances from Baker and cast on both coasts ahead of the film’s selective rollout in top markets next weekend and a nationwide expansion over the holidays. Distributor A24 said the film grossed $39,660 Fri.; $31,282 Sat.; and $25,651 Sun.

After lighting up the pandemic specialty box office over Black Friday weekend with an enormous per screen average, MGM/United Artist Releasing’s Licorice Pizza from Paul Thomas Anderson took Best Film and Best Director for this year from the National Board of Review.
The movie, loosely based on the teen acting life of producer Gary Goetzman during the 1970s, follows young Gary Valentine, who as he gets older, pivots toward using his money toward launching a waterbed business in the San Fernando Valley. The high-schooler falls for a slightly older girl in her 20s, Alana. Anderson captures nuanced, in-depth turns by indie rocker Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, who are fresh to the big screen, while shooting the film in 35Mm. Haim and Hoffman also earned NBR awards for Breakthrough Performance this year. The pic was blown up to 70Mm and it’s showing at the Regency Village in...

Paul Thomas Anderson would like you to travel back in time with him. He’s taken us backwards before: the early 20th century West in There Will Be Blood; a curdled postwar America in The Master; London’s Fifties fashion world in Phantom Thread; the morning-after hangover of Sixties SoCal counterculture in Inherent Vice; that transitional moment from Me Decade funkiness to coked-up Reagan-era jitteriness in Boogie Nights. But now, the 51-year-old writer-director wants you to join him in returning to a very specific moment in a very specific place.

“No Time to Die.” “House of Gucci.” “Eternals.” “F9.” “Don’t Look Up.” Many of the year’s buzziest movies have something in common: long running times. All the aforementioned films run well over the two-hour mark, which for Paul Thomas Anderson is not ideal. Speaking to The New York Times to promote his latest acclaimed feature, the coming-of-age movie “Licorice Pizza,” Anderson said the ideal runtime for a motion picture is two hours. “That’s when [movies are] at their best,” the Oscar-nominated director said.
Anderson revealed his ideal runtime when the conversation pivoted to the possibility of the director moving into the television space. Anderson has directed nine feature films since 1996 and has helmed countless music videos, but he has never been behind the camera for a television series.

Paul Thomas Anderson has always been fascinated with pretenders, with people who use their assumed gigs and personas as a shield for their own deep insecurities. From Tom Cruise’s alpha guru in Magnolia to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s blustering mystic in The Master, Josh Brolin’s cop in Inherent Vice to Paul Dano’s preacher in There Will Be Blood, these characters that circle and attempt to entrap Anderson’s putative protagonists often end up the most fascinating elements, teasing out a canniness and resourcefulness that resonates with his view of American self-actualization.

Two years after Quentin Tarantino spared Sharon Tate a gruesome Manson family murder, fellow SoCal auteur Paul Thomas Anderson re-creates the Encino of his childhood with every bit as much affection and attention to detail. Named for the regional record chain where Valley kids got their vinyl — but ostensibly Anderson’s own “Once Upon a Time in North Hollywood (or a few blocks west thereof)” — “Licorice Pizza” delivers a piping-hot, jumbo slice-of-life look at how it felt to grow up on the fringes of the film industry circa 1973, as seen through the eyes of an ambitious former child actor plotting how to follow up his early screen career.
These are not Anderson’s memories, mind you, but those of Gary Goetzman — Tom Hanks’ producing partner at Playtone, whose showbiz career began decades earlier opposite Lucille Ball in 1968’s “Yours, Mine and Ours” — rendered all the more appealing through the “Boogie...

Gary Valentine is 15 going on 30, Alana Kane is “25” but in air quotes that basically allow her to be whatever it might say on her eventual dream ticket out of Encino, and they first cross paths on a pale 1973 morning in the San Fernando Valley at a strange moment in history when Old Hollywood and New Hollywood have started to overlap. Bing Crosby is still alive even though Jim Morrison is already dead, and it feels like everyone is more or less the same age because no one really knows what time actually means anymore.

The first reactions to Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” promise a film that is a “warm, funny memory-driven coming of age fever dream” and “definitely a vibe.”

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” press tour has officially launched with a Variety cover story that spans topics including the inspirations behind the Oscar-nominated director’s new film and the actors Anderson is dreaming of directing. “Licorice Pizza” stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman as Alana Kane and Gary Valentine, who fall in love and come of age in the San Fernando Valley in 1973. Paul Thomas Anderson, chronicler of the dark heart of America in films like “There Will Be Blood” and parties that stretch to near dawn in “Boogie Nights,” is a morning person. He’s up by 5, in bed by 9 or 9:30, and rises before the sun, when he tinkers with scripts, watches movies, or just enjoys a few hours alone with his thoughts before he wakes up the four kids he has with Maya Rudolph.
“It’s my quiet time,” says Anderson, who is interrupting that sojourn to speak with a Variety reporter about his new film, “Licorice Pizza,” a warmhearted story about growing up in the San Fernando Valley. “I have a lot of siblings, and the only time to have any alone time was to wake up before anybody else. The only problem is by 1 o’clock you’re wasted.”

First screenings in Los Angeles have arrived for Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza,” his 1970s-set coming-of-age film starring Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman. The movie, his first since 2017’s “Phantom Thread,” is set to launch in limited release on November 26, before going wide on Christmas Day. So far, early word is positive for the film set in the San Fernando Valley, and co-starring Bradley Cooper and Benny Safdie. Check out first reactions off Twitter below.
Per distributor MGM, “‘Licorice Pizza’ is the story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973… the film tracks the treacherous navigation of first love.”
One person who’s also seen the movie is John C. Reilly, who sat down with Haim for Interview magazine to talk all things PTA.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” is one of the most anticipated films still to come in 2020, but one person lucky enough to have seen the coming-of-age drama is John C. Reilly. Anderson and Reilly are longtime friends and collaborators on “Hard Eight,” “Boogie Nights,” and “Magnolia.” The actor even has a small supporting role in “Licorice Pizza,” which centers on the love story between characters played by Cooper Hoffman (son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Alana Haim (making her acting debut amid a successful music career as a member of the rock band Haim). Reilly and Haim recently sat down together for Interview magazine to talk all things Paul Thomas Anderson.
“When Paul sent me that first screen test [of Cooper and Alana], I was like, ‘Dude, if you can keep them feeling this free, I think you’ve got a movie,'” Reilly said. “You know the phrase, ‘You can...
