The Berlinale’s new director Tricia Tuttle unveiled her inaugural line-up on Tuesday under the scrutiny of press and industry who are waiting to see whether she can get the festival back on track after a tumultuous 2024 edition.
The 19-title competition mixes works by confirmed big names such as Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon, Michel Franco’s Dreams, Radu Jude’s Kontinental ’25, Hong Sangsoo’s What Does That Nature Say To You with second and third movies by rising names such as Léonor Serraille’s Ari and Gabriel Mascaro’s The Blue Trail.
Outside of the competition, Tuttle may have secured a starrier than usual red carpet with previously announced invitations to works including Justin Kurzel’s series The Narrow Road To The Deep North with Jacob Elordi, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, with Robert Pattinson, and fresh addition A Complete Unknown, with Timothée Chamalet, but she is keeping...

Bird and Fish Tank director Andrea Arnold plans to make the long-discussed FBI thriller Featherwood, starring Scarlett Johansson, as her next movie.
Indie director Andrea Arnold returned to her home turf in Kent to shoot Bird, the acclaimed drama (starring Barry Keoghan) released last year. If all goes to plan, she could be heading back to the United States for her next film – Featherwood, starring Scarlett Johansson.
In an interview with Screen Daily (via World Of Reel), Arnold reportedly said that, while a production date hasn’t been announced yet, she’s been on a location scouting tour in Texas.
Word of Featherwood – and Johansson’s attachment – first began to circulate last February. It’s based on the true-life story of Carol Blevins, the ‘property’ of a white supremacist gang member who became an FBI informant in a wide-ranging investigation in the 2000s. That investigation, in which Blevins became a key witness,...

The past year has arguably been the biggest year for the Hollywood actor Nicholas Hoult, who further showcased his depth as an actor in several movies like Juror No. 2, Nosferatu, and The Order. And the latter featured him in a standout role as the leader of a neo-Nazi terrorist group, Bob Mathews.

The Order and Nitram director could be about to team up with Sebastian Stan on the true-life thriller, Burning Rainbow Farm.
Even if the ongoing awards season seems determined to ignore it, Sebastian Stan enjoyed a wonderful 2024, not only appearing in two excellent films but putting in career-best work in both of them. In A24’s A Different Man, Stan showcased his excellent taste for choosing roles which challenge him as an actor whilst also pointing to his inclinations for seeking out and developing roles that some of his contemporaries would fear to take.
That approach was certainly true when it came to his other role last year, taking on the part of a younger Donald Trump in The Apprentice. As with A Different Man, Stan took a role in an election year that – given the febrile state of America’s political landscape – was sure to be divisive and gave...

Child stars don’t have it easy in the Hollywood system. We’ve all heard horror stories of young actors who become cash cows for dismissive parents or lose themselves to the industry’s indulgent lifestyle. Others simply fade away, leaving their mark at a young age then failing to find work as they mature into adulthood.
Many child actors try to avoid this fate by signing on to shocking projects or accepting bold and often scandalous roles. Known for his work in the High School Musical franchise, Zac Efron attempted this feat by playing notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. Joe Berlinger’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile positions this prolific murderer as a duplicitous but charming boyfriend able to woo his way through a bumbling legal system until the reality of his crimes finally catches up. But does this glamorous casting serve to glorify a sadistic predator? Has...

The Order director Justin Kurzel has offered a clarification on an early story doing the rounds that he wants to make a Mad Max prequel.
On the 27th December, out came The Order – what is for this writer one of the finest thrillers of 2024. Early in the promotional trail for that film, its director Justin Kurzel was quoted as saying he’d be interested in making a prequel to George Miller’s seminal 1979 revenge piece, Mad Max.
The quotes originated from an interview with Collider, and we reported on Kurzel’s comments in early December 2025. “I’ve always been curious about what happened before the first Mad Max,” Kurzel said at the time; “what was that world with the Nightrider, pre-Mad Max?”
(The Nightrider Kurzel refers to is a member of the maniacal biker gang that turns Mel Gibson’s protagonist Max Rockatansky from patrolling highway cop to avenging angel.

“Carry-On”, Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, continues to add to its claim to be one of the most watched Netflix original movies ever. During the high-end viewership holiday period, it now has been #1 for three weeks in a row. Even being in the top spot for two consecutive weeks is rare among Netflix films, but a third return to #1 elevates it into a position not seen at least in the last two years.
Even “Glass Onion,” the “Knives Out” sequel, only managed two weeks at #1, and it is currently the #10 English-language film on the Netflix All Time list. Netflix will release worldwide statistics on Tuesday, but based on its current position, look for them to elevate “Carry-On” among their biggest successes.

Directed by Justin Kurzel, The Order follows the true story of a real-life White supremacist named Bob Mathews and makes us privy to the kind of chaos the man caused back in the day. It can be said that the Jude Law starrer reimagines the real-life events that took place in the early eighties and told us about the ideology of the man and why he did what he did. Most of the events shown in the film happened in real life, though the filmmaker has taken certain creative liberties and created fictional characters (like that of Terry Husk) to somewhat dramatize the conflict and make it meatier. So, let’s find out what happened in The Order film and if Bob Mathews’ thinking was as crooked as it was shown in the film.

Jude Law found the key to his ‘The Order’ character when he was “sniffling and coughing and haggard”.The 51-year-old actor stars in the movie as FBI agent Terry Husk, who is hunting down neo-Nazi bank rubber Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult), and he relished the chance to “let [himself] go” to play the “broken” detective. He recently told Britain’s Hello! Magazine: “I was adding to the DNA of the guy and, physically, I was waiting for a click.“That came about because I got sick and I was very run down and tired.“Our director Justin Kurzel saw something in me one day when I was sniffling and coughing and haggard. He was like, ‘Ok, this is him. This is the guy!’“I just wanted him to feel broken. I wanted you to worry that he wasn’t actually going to make it, that there was a sense of doubt.

The Order (2024) is a brooding investigative thriller that puts another feather in director Justin Kurzel’s cap. After following the chilling character portraits in ‘Nitram’ and ‘The Snowtown Murders,’ Kurzel returns with an equally harrowing depiction of evil in human beings. This time, he shifts his focus toward a White Supremacist terrorist group that was active in the 1980s. He paints the picture of a small American town mainly through the eyes of an FBI agent, who ends up in a cat-and-mouse chase with the terrorist group’s members. Although the plot essentially leads us toward its leader’s capture, it is more interested in interrogating the human tendencies that affect the usual order of any place; and how people react in such situations of change.

“The Order” is a thriller movie starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan. It is written by Zach Baylin, and directed by Justin Kurzel.
This cinematic tour de force, set against the backdrop of 1980s Pacific Northwest, plunges viewers into a harrowing world of violent bank heists and armored car robberies that sent shockwaves through the region.
At the heart of this gripping narrative lies a chilling truth: these aren’t your run-of-the-mill criminals, but a group of Aryan supremacists led by the charismatic and dangerous Bob Mathews, brilliantly portrayed by Nicholas Hoult. Their audacious goal? To finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government, a premise that sends shivers down the spine and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
Enter FBI agent Terry Husk, brought to life by the ever-versatile Jude Law. As Husk delves deeper into the treacherous world of white supremacists, the film ratchets up the tension,...

Nicholas Hoult plays a wannabe far-right martyr, and Law and Tye Sheridan the feds on his tail, in a well-cast if anticlimactic true-crime tale
Justin Kurzel directs a workmanlike true-crime thriller about a real-life American white supremacist movement called the Order, which, in the 1980s, murdered Jewish radio journalist Alan Berg and pulled off bank robberies to fund a planned national insurrection. Its leader, Bob Mathews, sought a creepy martyrdom involving an Alamo-style standoff with federal agents at the group’s remote farmhouse in Washington state. Screenwriter Zach Baylin (Oscar-nominated for King Richard) adapts the book about the case, The Silent Brotherhood, by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt; Nicholas Hoult plays the baby-faced Mathews, with Jude Law and Tye Sheridan as the (fictional-composite) officers battling to take him down.

Welcome to Career Watch, a vocational checkup of top actors and directors and those who hope to get there. In this edition, we take on Nicholas Hoult, who’s doing what he’s always done: owning character roles in film, theater, and television.
Bottom Line: Hoult has an enigmatic persona that fits just about any role. The camera is drawn to his deep blue eyes, and you can count on Hoult to deliver a character’s emotional spine. (He’s not one to go overboard.) That’s why this grown-up child actor never falls out of favor. He can handle anything: Marvel superheroics, Nic Cage flicks (“The Weatherman” and “Renfield”), movies starring Toni Colette (“About a Boy” and “Juror #2”), action thrillers, and comedic bodice-rippers.
Career Arcs: Hoult first trod the boards when he was three, following in the footsteps of his older siblings. He starred opposite Toni Collette and Hugh Grant...

Directed by Justin Kurzel and written by Zach Baylin, The Order is a gripping 2024 action thriller based on the acclaimed non-fiction book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt.
Bringing to life one of the most chilling chapters in modern American history, the film explores the rise of a violent white supremacist terrorist group in the 1980s and the relentless FBI pursuit to bring it to justice. It stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Marc Maron.
We sat down for a chat with actor Jude Law to talk about his role as producer and actor in the film. We also talked about the importance of retelling such important stories, especially during these dark times. Finally we couldn’t resist the temptation to ask hi8m about The Holiday, a Christmas movie that has continued to inspire and delight audiences almost 2 whole decades after it was first released.

Starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, and directed by Justin Kurzel, tense thriller The Order is one of 2024’s last must-see films. Our review:
Director Justin Kurzel has a certain way of depicting death. Where most filmmakers might serve up an aesthetised, cinematic version of what dying looks and feels like, Kurzel captures it in what feels unsettlingly real: the shock, the gasping for air, the sensation of drowning in blood. It’s something he brought to his startling debut Snowtown, and continued into his later work, whether it’s his Technicolor adaptation of Macbeth (2015) or his disturbing 2021 drama, Nitram.
Like much of Kurzel’s earlier work, The Order, written by Zach Baylin, is based on real events: the FBI’s hunt for a white supremacist militia group in the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1984, the group – which called itself The Order – waged a terror campaign across Colorado and Washington, bombing buildings,...

A critically acclaimed thriller starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult is getting a VOD release. Known for The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain, two films that earned him Academy Award nominations, Law has maintained an impressive catalog across his 38-year career. The actor currently leads the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew cast on Disney+, a particular bright spot for the franchise in terms of audience reception, and has appeared in other major blockbusters over the years, including Sherlock Holmes, Captain Marvel, and Fantastic Beasts. Law also starred in fan-favorite romantic movies Closer and The Holiday.
When it comes to Hoult, whose star has been on the rise for the past decade, X-Men: First Class and Warm Bodies seemed to kickstart his mainstream career. Since then, he has taken on various projects that achieved commercial success and/or garnered praise from audiences, reprising his role as Beast in multiple X-Men sequels...

As much as Jurnee Smollett is an actor, she could also be considered an archivist — given how much of her 38-year career she’s spent capturing elements of untold history.
Smollett has been in front of the camera since she was 10 months old, but began acting in earnest when she was 5, appearing on sitcoms like “Full House” and “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper.” Since then, Smollett played Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Smallest Freedom Fighter” (8-year-old Sheyann Webb) in the 1999 TV movie “Selma, Lord Selma”; the sole female debater at a historically Black college in 1935 Texas in 2007’s “The Great Debaters”; a woman who escapes slavery in the 2016 series “Underground”; and a fiery Civil Rights activist fighting both societal and supernatural monsters in 2020’s “Lovecraft Country,” HBO’s acclaimed sci-fi drama for which Smollett earned her first Emmy nomination.

Nothing says Christmas like violence and corruption! Who’s bringing the spiked eggnog?
Here’s the official synopsis for The Order:
“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plans to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

Reflecting on the past year in film, I find myself at an interesting crossroads where my alignment with the consensus is back off the axis. After 2022 left me feeling a bit out in the weeds regarding cinema culture, last year I was more in tune with the overall vibes––several favorites picked up Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Jude Law, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is an Englishman who has been one of the world’s finest screen actors for some 30 years.
Twice Oscar-nominated before he was even 30, first for his breakout supporting turn in 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley and then for his first major leading role in 2003’s Cold Mountain, both of which were directed by Anthony Minghella, he has also been directed by Clint Eastwood, David Cronenberg, Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes, David O. There's no such thing as a "bad" year for movies -- not if you watch enough of them. That statement might come across like a hackneyed cliché every time film fans trot that out and lob it into the ether like a self-righteous grenade ... but it's still true!
Okay, we won't put lipstick on a pig: the state of the industry these days feels, to put a fine point on it, dire. Blockbusters have bullied out smaller and more original offerings on their way to ruling the roost, though even that's no guarantee anymore with the way budgets keep skyrocketing. Streaming platforms have become a last, desperate haven for passion projects from our best and brightest filmmakers ... but that only makes it easier for the Powers That Be to take movies like Clint Eastwood's "Juror #2" and sentence them to a digital death penalty. And unless they're dealing with names like Christopher Nolan,...

Nicholas Hoult has truly outdone himself in 2024.
The English actor has received the best reviews of his nearly three-decade-long career for a trio of critically acclaimed films that were all timed to the final two months of the calendar year. To top it all off, he delivered a new take on Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman (2025), one of the most anticipated and consequential releases in quite some time. A first look is expected to arrive next week.
Beginning with Nov. 1’s Juror #2, Hoult portrayed the title character in what many consider to be Clint Eastwood’s finest film in ages. The warm response from critics and audiences has also helped keep the drama in the year-end conversation after a surprisingly limited theatrical release and modest awards campaign.

Bucky Barns himself, Sebastian Stan, looks set to continue his impressive work away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a collaboration with director Cristian Mungiu.

Tye Sheridan On ‘The Order,’ Working With Jude Law, Terrence Malick & ‘Ready Player Two’ [Interview]
Taking its cues from the gritty 1970s crime thrillers of Sydney Lumet and perhaps drawing some influence from recent dramas about little-known historical events ala “BlackKklansman” or even “Judas And The Messiah,” the crime drama, “The Order,” is the latest film from Aussie director Justin Kurzel (“Macbeth,” “Nitram”).
Starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult and Tye Sheridan, the film centers on a lone FBI agent (Law) who begins to believe that a series of bank robberies and car heists frightening communities in the Pacific Northwest are the work of a dangerous domestic terrorist and white supremacist group.

When thinking about why he wanted to star in a film like “The Order” during this time in history, Jude Law reflects that the idea of division through hatred is something that’s been around forever but also highlighted a story that he felt needed to be amplified. “It shone light on the early forming of hate groups and extremist groups in the States and by going back, telling a story that somehow has these uncomfortable relevances to today is a great way of talking and having a conversation starter,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He adds, “By concentrating on getting that authentic, it seemed to be effective as a piece that’s commenting on where we are now.”

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series highlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s buzziest films continues with The Order, Justin Kurzel’s period crime drama based on a chilling and timely true story. The screenplay was written by Oscar-nominated King Richard scribe Zach Baylin.
The film starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett has been hitting the fall festival circuit beginning with its world premiere at Venice. It has since opened the Zurich and Marrakesh film festivals and hit theaters in limited release this past weekend via Vertical.
Baylin’s script, adapted from the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, centers on a string of violent robberies and other crimes beginning in the early 1980s Pacific Northwest that the FBI, and specifically veteran agent Terry Husk (Law), figured out were being perpetrated by a white supremacist group plotting to overthrow the government.

Director Justin Kurzel was not at all familiar with the story of Bob Mathews until he started reading the script for “The Order” written by Zach Baylin. “I’d sort of read the first 15 pages and I was like, oh wow, this reminds me of these great seventies films that Friedkin and Lumet used to kind of do,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above).
As he read the script he found himself more and more captivated by the subject of American extremism. “I wasn’t aware of ‘The Turner Diaries.’ I wasn’t aware of this sort of organization such as The Order. I was curious. I’ve been interested in the past with films that I’ve done here about how communities can be influenced by figures that can manipulate them to believe in their own kind of ideology.”

Warning: The following contains Spoilers for The Order.Director Justin Kurzel offers a vague explanation for the hunting scene in The Order, which stars Jude Law as FBI agent Terry Husk and Nicolas Hoult as Bob Matthews, the leader of the white supremacist terrorist group called The Order. Based on the 1989 non-fiction book, The Silent Brotherhood, the film sees Husk team up with a local cop to uncover a series of domestic attacks in the United States orchestrated by The Order in the 1980s. Including the hunting scene, there are several occasions when Bob opts out of killing Terry.
When asked why Terry hesitated to shoot the deer and what Bob's intention is in the hunting scene, the director told Screen Rant that there's a "sort of pursuit" that Terry "thinks he's going to do," but he's "intimidated and in awe" by what's in front of him at the same time.

In discussing his upcoming slate, Stan seemed particularly excited about a project not yet announced with Cristian Mungiu, the Romanian filmmaker behind Palme d’Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which he expects to shoot next year.
