The Pixies’s The Night the Zombies Came sees the first major change in personnel for the band since Paz Lenchantin took over as bassist and backing vocalist a decade ago. Lenchantin, who was unceremoniously removed from the lineup earlier this year, has been replaced by English musician and visual artist Emma Richardson, formerly of Band of Skulls. Richardson, whose vocals are featured prominently throughout, sings an octave above lead singer Black Francis, who even steps away from the mic on occasion to let her sing solo.
Richardson’s harmonies on songs like “Chicken” and “Mercy Me” are positively Beatles-esque, and by default probably the most conventionally beautiful moments in the Pixies’s discography to date. But her youthful and precise voice isn’t there solely to beautify or even balance out Black Francis’s increasingly monotone growl. As she demonstrates on “Motoroller,” which features the album’s most potent guitar riff,...

Pixies have shared “Motoroller,” the latest new song off their forthcoming album The Night the Zombies Came.
Built from both an acoustic and electric guitar line, “Motoroller” travels by “scooter” through Berlin, with vocalist Black Francis offering various vague details that pop up along his ride. Meanwhile, new vocalist and bassist Emma Richardson (formerly of Band of Skulls) takes Francis’ melodies up the octave and offers a handful of satisfying vocal harmonies.

“This is one of those kinds of songs where there’s little threads you can follow and they take you somewhere,” Francis said about the track in a statement. “But they’re not required for the experience. A new show hits the air, and you’re hooked, counting down the days until the next season. Then, out of nowhere — Boom! — you find out your favorite show is canceled.
Before the age of streaming, plenty of beloved shows barely made it past one season. The usual culprit? “Low ratings.”
(Fox / Screenshot)
But often, networks were to blame. Maybe they stuck a great show in a terrible time slot or scheduled it against a ratings juggernaut on another network.
Sometimes, the show was too edgy or dark for network bigwigs or too complex for mainstream audiences to embrace right away.
In rare cases, fan campaigns brought a canceled show back for another season, but more often, it was game over.
If streaming had been as big back then as it is now, these shows — and their loyal fans — might have gotten the long run they deserved.
So, what failed...

Pixies have released a new song called “Oyster Beds,” which serves as the latest preview of their upcoming album, The Night the Zombies Came. Stream it below.
Featuring crunchy guitar riffs, “Oyster Beds” takes inspiration from frontman Black Francis’ return to painting as a way to find focus while recording the album at Rockfield Studios in Wales. In a statement, he said the lyrics are “a laundry list of things I was painting over the last couple years.”

Last month, Pixies announced their ninth studio album, The Night the Zombies Came, marking the band’s fifth studio release since they reunited in 2004. Now, in a new interview, they explained that one of the things inspiring them to create new music is the fact that they “don’t want to be a Pixies cover band.”
The comment was made by guitarist Joey Santiago in the band’s new interview with Mojo. Alluding to their continued output over the years, he said, “Fans are happy to hear old stuff, but we’re creative people… We don’t want to be a Pixies cover band.”

Growing up in the 1990s, I had two obsessions: Stephen King and "The X-Files." So when it was revealed that King, the master of horror himself, was going to pen an episode of the cult hit series, I was over the moon. Then I watched the episode. Sadly, King's "X-Files" ep, titled "Chinga," was not great. For one thing, it split-up Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson), which never goes well — the show needs these two working side-by-side, feeding off each other. If you don't believe me, just think about how the show went downhill after Duchovny left for a period, and how worse it got when Anderson started appearing in less episodes as well. For another thing, the story, about a haunted doll that forces people to harm themselves, fails to illicit much emotion. "The X-Files" could be a genuinely scary show, but "Chinga" is almost entirely scare-free,...

Pixies have announced a brand new album called The Night the Zombies Came. It’s due for release just in time for Halloween — October 25th, to be exact — via BMG.
As its title and release date suggest, Pixies’ new album is at least partially inspired by the spooky season. Among the “disparate wonders” that inform the 13-track LP are “Druidism, apocalyptic shopping malls, mediaeval themed restaurants, 12th century poetic form, surf rock, gargoyles, bog people, and the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s era Fleetwood Mac,” according to a press release.
Meanwhile, on the newly released single, “Chicken,” frontman Black Francis “personifies poultry, dealing with decapitation, and feeling like an actor of Zombie movies.” Watch the lyric video for “Chicken” below. Pixies previously previewed the album with the release of lead single “You’re So Impatient.”

The Dandy Warhols have joined forces with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash for the new song “I’d Like to Help You with Your Problem.”
It’s the latest single from the Dandy Warhols’ upcoming album Rockmaker, out March 15th. As if to make good that album title, the Dandy’s tapped none other than Slash himself for the self-described “Vietnam-era acid rock” song.
The churning chord progression and big hooks are right in Slash’s wheelhouse, and he adds some captivating wah-wah leads and ostensibly the solo in the middle of the song. It’s a seamless collaboration — with some uncanny axework from a living legend.
“The first time we heard it back in our studio we just stared at each other with our mouths open,” said frontman Courney Taylor-Taylor. “What he played on the track is amazing. I’ve never heard him play quite like that, but what...

The Dandy Warhols have unveiled a new single called “Danzig With Myself,” featuring a guest spot by Pixies frontman Black Francis. The song appears on the alt-rock band’s upcoming album, Rockmaker, out March 15th.
Musically, the song has a Pixies vibe, with Francis contributing a fuzzed-out guitar track. Of the song’s title, Dandy Warhol singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor explained, “It started with a riff that either sounded like Misfits or Danzig and then got slowed down.”
He continued, “Over time, it became the working title that was just too good to replace.”
Taylor-Taylor delivers the verses in a deep sing-talk vocal, although not quite as deep as Glenn Danzig, and the dark lyrics serve as another tribute of sorts to the horror-punk icon. The tune starts out with the lines, “Some days it’s just so obvious/ Some days insidious/ But half the people alive today are/ Are fucking idiots.

End Of The Road is a festival that keeps its promises. The cultured leftfield shindig – where croquet tournaments break out in forest glades and peacocks roam the trimmed lawns of Dorset’s Larmer Tree Gardens, unbothered by the experimental folk, rock, rap and electronic tomfoolery floating across the site – has been promising a weekend headlined by indie giants Pixies and Bright Eyes since 2020. Covid scuppered that event, and post-pandemic travel issues forced the 2021 bill to become more UK-based. But this year, Eotr puts its music where its mouth is at last, with plenty more curveballs thrown in to keep this crowd of discerning alternative music fans pleasingly off-balance.
The opening Thursday night bill is a brain-rattling case in point. On the main Woods Stage, LA’s Sudan Archives sets out to invent jig-hop, interspersing psychosexual ambient raps with ruined snippets of Irish folk played on the fiddle she brandishes throughout.

Over the course of “Mr. Robot’s” run, composer Mac Quayle has done a pretty effective job creating an eerie and ethereal (etheerieal?) backdrop to one man’s psychological self-sabotage. The ongoing trials of Elliot Alderson have been underscored by electronic-heavy instrumentals, highlighting the character in moments of triumph and moments of despair (more on that later).
As good as Quayle has been, the series has also benefited from a finely curated set of musical moments, with some of the most memorable “Mr. Robot” sequences bolstered by an impeccable soundtrack selected by music supervisors Amie Bond and Charlie Haggard. Some of these have been the numerous string of classical favorites used to set up Tyrell Wellick in various stages of upper-class crises. Others have drawn on electronic music icons that have influenced the show in more ways than one.

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I email my manuscript to myself... "They won't jump out of the way." -Laurie After two episodes set largely in Jarden, "The Leftovers" returns to the Tri-State area(*), and to the most divisive of the many divisive elements of season 1, with Laurie and Tommy taking on the Guilty Remnant in "Off Ramp." (*) No, not that Tri-State area, even if Damon Lindelof wrote a "Lost"-themed "Phineas & Ferb" episode. When Laurie's potential book publisher asks her to explain exactly what the Remnant believes and why, he's acting as a stand-in for the many "Leftovers" viewers who didn't understand and/or like what all those chain-smoking ghouls in white jumpsuits were up to last season. And with Laurie finally able to speak — she speaks so much in this episode that you can feel all those words relieved to get out...

For most of its first season, "Mr. Robot" has been running a half-step ahead of current events, with so many public real-world hacks seeming practically like viral marketing for the USA drama. Last week, though, the intersection of art and life became truly unfortunate, when the on-camera murders of a TV reporter and cameraman in Virginia came uncomfortably close to a scene scheduled to air in that night's "Mr. Robot" season finale. Out of both sensitivity for the real victims, and perhaps a sense that no one would be able to watch that scene on that night without thinking only about Virginia, USA delayed the finale a week, finally airing it tonight. "Mr. Robot" creator Sam Esmail supported that decision. When we spoke the day after it was made, he said he had no plans to edit the scene in any way, though he did talk in a larger sense...

The 'crossover episode' is surprisingly rare in television and only happens thanks to a particular set of circumstances; usually involving shared writers-producers, and both shows airing on the same network.
Do you remember when Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel's narratives would often criss-cross? We can look forward to more of the same when The CW's Arrow is joined by The Flash - and there's also a crossover special due for Fox's Family Guy and The Simpsons.
However, the vast majority of TV shows will never have crossover episodes because the circumstances aren't right, or because it's frankly a terrible idea.
But that doesn't stop people's imaginations running riot! Below are 12 very unlikely, or outright impossible, examples of past and present TV shows that could, or should, have combined forces... maybe.
1. Dexter / Hannibal

The Pixies’ new album, “Indie Cindy,” is streaming a week ahead of its release. Listen below. The 12-track set combines the band’s recent EPs — “Ep-1,” “Ep-2,” and “Ep-3” — with three new songs. “Indie Cindy” is the Pixies’ first album since 1991's “Trompe le Monde.” “Doolittle,” “Bossanova” and “Trompe Le Monde” producer Gil Norton returned for the new album, but former bassist and co-founder Kim Deal — who left the band in 2013 — does not appear.

He's been called a master of hip cinematic heartbreak who deals in worlds as shiny and perfect as a Christmas ornament — or, put more charitably, a virtuoso at making pathos both wrenching and witty in a idiosyncratic, individual style. You always know when you're watching a Wes Anderson film; the symmetrical compositions and deep-cut soundtracks are a dead giveaway. His latest movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel, has members of his repertory-players cast (including Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Owen Wilson) zipping through a never-quite-was 20th-century Europe, one...

In the clip above, entitled "The Escape," Murray instructs Fiennes and Tony Revolori on a getaway in which they must depart on a train leaving in four minutes. Bonus points for Murray's perfect moustache.

Kim Deal lasted 25 years in the Pixies, but her replacement Kim Shattuck put down her bass after only four months. Based on Shattuck's tweet that announced the news on Friday, it wasn't her decision to leave. Shattuck is the founder of Southern California rock band the Muffs, which she took a break from to play bass and sing backup vocals for the Pixies' first leg of its world tour. The Pixies recently confirmed it will appear at the 2014 Primavera Sound festival, including a Barcelona date with Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel. The band's North American tour kicks...

Call us crazy, but it seems like Wes Anderson has been getting a fair amount of special attention lately. In the past two months, there’s been a new book released chronicling his career in movies, there’s this short film he made with Jason Schwartzmann, his animated film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is getting a Criterion Collection release, SNL recently did a parody of his films, and of course, his next film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is just on the horizon (trailer here). If you are a fan of Wes Anderson, what more could you possibly want? Maybe a Wes Anderson tribute CD? Would you want that as well? No? Well, you’re gonna get it anyway… Entitled “I Saved Latin!,” the 2-cd tribute to Wes Anderson is due to come out next spring thanks to American Laundromat Records. The album features many cover songs that were prominently featured in Anderson’s first six films.

Legendary Alternative rock band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986, comprising of front man Black Francis, Joey Santiago on guitars, bass player Kim Deal, and drummer David Lovering on drums. The 4 albums they released before their breakup in 1993 have gone down in history as some of the most influential albums in Alt-Rock history.
They’re noteworthy not just because of how good the music is, but how surrealist the bands lyrics are. Now, after the release of ‘Ep-1′ and ‘Bagboy’, the bands first material since comeback single ‘Bam Thwok’ back in 2004, and the departure of Kim Deal, I look back at the weird and wonderful Pixies songs to come out of the mind of the band.
Here are 10 of the maddest;

The Pixies are back and all is well with the world; but this time it’s not just for an incredible, worldwide, sold out tour. Now they’ve got a brand new four song Ep and new videos to go along with their reformatted line-up. 'Indie Cindy' is the latest video from the rock band that helped spawn and inspire much of the early 90s alt/grunge craze. It's directed by Lamar + Nik; the Oklahoman duo has been on a tear lately, putting together an impressive catalogue that includes, in addition to another Pixies title, Lushlife’s breakout clip for 'Magnolia.' Presented in reverse order, Memento style, 'Indie Cindy' is a video about what happens when you get in over your head. It's told with such a strong narrative structure, you could almost consider it a short film. It is a testament to the band’s new approach to...

The question of whether the Pixies will carry on without original bassist Kim Deal has been answered loud and clear. Deal -- also a founding member of The Breeders -- announced her departure from the group just a few weeks ago. The remaining Pixies surprised fans early this morning by releasing a brand new song called "Bagboy," along with a colorfully destructive video. When the influential college rock band -- featuring Black Francis, Deal, David Lovering and Joey Santiago -- reunited in 2004 after a decade apart, they concentrated on touring and largely steered clear of the studio. Whatever, it's a new Pixies song! Enjoy.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Pixies' second album, "Surfer Rosa," a seminal LP that has gone down in Rolling Stone history as one of the 500 greatest records of all time.
Every indie rock band of the past two and half decades owes a great deal to the Pixies, the Boston-bred quartet that seamlessly merged psychedelia, noise rock and alternative grunge to create one of the 1980's most memorable music projects. Formed in the collegiate environment of University of Massachusetts, the band -- comprised of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering -- predates Nirvana as a catalyst for the immeasurable rock boom of the 1990s.
Like most indie rock bands, the Pixies were not a chart topping force, but their second album, the lyrically named "Surfer Rosa," earned accolades on its own after its 1988 release. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice dubbed the record "the Amerindie find of the year,...

Henriksen played Black Francis Frank Black, an ex-fbi agent turned freelance forensic consultant, with the psychic ability to see inside the minds of criminals. He worked for the mysterious Millennium Group, which became more sinister as the series progressed. The often grisly series struggled with a limiting serial-killer-of-the-week formula for a while, before getting more into the politics within the Millennium Group itself, and conspiracy theories and supernatural forces...
