Oxygen True Crime takes a deep dive into a murder case that stymied investigators for five decades in Lady of the Dunes: Hunting a Cape Cod Killer. The two-hour special runs over two nights and premieres on Friday, November 9, 2024 at 8pm Et/Pt. It concludes on November 30th at 9pm Et/Pt.

“In 1974, the idyllic and close-knit community of Provincetown was stunned when the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a remote area of the dunes. Exclusive: The North Road Company President of Television Amy Israel continues to assemble her executive team with the hire of wiip’s Josh Stern as well as a duo who had worked for her at Showtime, Jamie Pross and Madison Heim-Jinivisian. Stern will serve as EVP of Television, Pross as VP of Television and Heim-Jinivisian as Creative Executive.

These are the first TV creative executive appointments since Israel joined Peter Chernin’s The North Road in late 2023 from Showtime where she had spearheaded such series as the Emmy-nominated Ripley (which eventually migrated to Netflix), Fellow Travelers, Yellowjackets, The Affair and Billions.

FX revealed its spring slate of new and returning series, including the second half of American Horror Story: Delicate, Welcome to Wrexham‘s third season, the new Elisabeth Moss-led spy thriller The Veil, the documentary feature The New York Times Presents: Broken Horses and the limited series Clipped (formerly The Sterling Affairs).

American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 premieres Wednesday, April 3 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on FX and streaming the next day on Hulu. The four-episode second half of the anthology horror drama will premiere with one episode, and a new episode each following Wednesday. The series will be available on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories at a later date.

Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk executive produce alongside Alexis Martin Woodall, Halley Feiffer, John J. Gray and Scott Robertson. The series, which is renewed for a 13th season, is produced by 20th Television.

Nat Geo has ordered a trio of new projects.

The network has greenlit Pathological, a true-crime doc about conman Stéphane Bourgoin and Sally, a feature doc about space pioneer Sally Ride, while Anthony Mackie is taking Shark Beach over from Chris Hemsworth.

Pathological: Chasing A True-Crime Con Man follows the rise and fall of bestselling French author and serial killer expert Bourgoin, whose career was built on a foundation of lies. The series takes viewers through the dramatic twists and turns of Bourgoin’s life in front of and behind the camera and tracks his pursuit by a group of true-crime enthusiasts, whose passion for the genre turned them into amateur sleuths and seekers of truth.

Based on the New Yorker’s 2022 piece on Bourgoin from journalist Lauren Collins, the three-part series comes from filmmaker Ben Selkow. It is produced by The New Yorker Studios and The Circus producer Left/Right.

“The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth” will conclude with its eighth season, Showtime announced on Tuesday. The series finale episode is scheduled to arrive on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. Et/Pt.

Navy veteran Remi Adeleke hosts The History Channel’s Beyond the Battlefield, a two-part special honoring military veterans. Airing on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 8pm Et/Pt, the special’s executive produced by retired NFL star Peyton Manning, who also shows up in front of the camera along with professional skateboarder Tony Hawk.

Manning’s company Omaha Productions and Left/Right produced the special that takes an in-depth look at the U.S. military, including pivotal moments in military history. Beyond the Battlefield includes interviews with experts, historians, and active duty personnel, along with archival footage.

Amid a Toronto Film Festival light on sales, Greenwich Entertainment has nabbed domestic distribution for a documentary on Louis C.K., TheWrap has learned.

The film, “Sorry/Not Sorry,” details the stand-up’s downfall after he was accused in a 2017 New York Times article of sexual misconduct by five women. It also deals with C.K.’s attempts at a post-scandal comeback — including a Grammy win in 2021 — along with backlash faced by the accusers. The sale came hours after the film’s TIFF world premiere.

Directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones, “Sorry/Not Sorry” is a New York Times production. Financial terms have not been disclosed, but Greenwich’s Andy Bohn negotiated the acquisition with CAA Media Finance on behalf of The New York Times.

Greenwich Entertainment has picked up Sorry/Not Sorry, a new documentary that examines the sexual misconduct scandal that engulfed comedian Louis C.K. and its aftermath, hours after the film had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Greenwich took North American rights to the film, co-directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones. Sorry/Not Sorry is based on the expose of Louis C.K. published by The New York Times, with the Times also producing together with Left/Right. Suh, Mones and Kathleen Lingo produced the film. New York Times journalists Melena Ryzik, Cara Buckley and Jodi Kantor, authors of the original 2017 article, served as consulting producers. Exclusive: In one of the first acquisition deals at Toronto, Greenwich Entertainment today announced it has picked up Sorry/Not Sorry, the documentary about the Louis C.K. sexual misconduct scandal and its aftermath, hours after the film’s TIFF world premiere.

The deal covers North American distribution rights to the film directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones. Sorry/Not Sorry is a production of The New York Times.

“In 2017, The New York Times published an article in which five women accused comedian Louis C.K. of sexual harassment,” notes a description of the film. “Nine months later, he returned to the stage and went on to win a Grammy in 2021. Sorry/Not Sorry examines the cultural fixation with Louis C.K. and his comeback while revealing the backlash faced by the women who spoke up about his behavior.”

August theatrical releases were a bit sparse, but “Partner Track,” “Lost Ollie” and seven other book-based projects found their way onto streamers last month, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” September has more theatrical releases, but fewer book adaptations to look forward to. Those that are coming out this month have rich history though, especially “The Rings of Power” series that Amazon has based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and appendices.

Hillary Clinton and her daughter Chelsea are hitting the road in their new docuseries “Gutsy,” talking to inspiring women and trying bold new activities along the way. In the first trailer for the series, we see the former women of the White House rappelling over waterfalls, putting out fires — and bowling with Wanda Sykes.

According to Apple TV+, the series “shows Hillary and Chelsea as you’ve never seen them before, revealing their special mother-daughter bond and the unique, multi-generational way they approach the important and timely issues highlighted in each episode.” Those issues are raised as part of “a thought-provoking journey to speak with pioneering women artists, activists, community leaders and everyday heroes who show us what it truly means to be gutsy.”

After canceling media-affairs show “Reliable Sources,” which often tilted at the content of Fox News Channel, CNN plans to air a previously-announced documentary mini-series about that network’s owners.

“The Murdochs: Empire of Influence,” a seven-part documentary series previously planned for the now-scuttled streaming site CNN+, will debut on CNN”s flagship cable outlet in the fall. The original series will debut with a two-episode premiere on Sunday, September 25.

The series was produced with The New York Times and Left/Right and is based on the New York Times Magazine article “How Rupert Murdoch’s Empire of Influence Remade the World,” by journalists Jonathan Mahler and Jim Rutenberg. Peter Chernin is going all-in on building an independent content studio with global reach backed with up to 800 million in financing from private equity giants Providence Equity Partners and Apollo.

The media investor and former Fox chief has formed The North Road Company after quietly acquiring the U.S. production assets of Red Arrow Studios in a deal with Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 said to be worth about 180 million.

The Red Arrow units will combine with the existing Chernin Entertainment banner as the backbone of the new venture that will focus on producing movies, scripted and unscripted TV programs and documentaries, among other content. As part of the North Road transaction, Chernin has also acquired the remaining 50 of Words + Pictures, the documentary production company that Chernin launched last year with ESPN alum Connor Schell and Chernin Entertainment’s Jesse Jacobs.

The Chernin Group co-founder Peter Chernin is rolling up three content studios into one new mega-project, backed by 800 million in financing from two private equity firms.

Chernin is launching The North Road Company, a global multi-genre film and TV studio that will include ownership of Chernin Entertainment (Ford v Ferrari, New Girl); and Words + Pictures (The ESPYs), the venture launched by former ESPN executive Connor Schell, and which was backed by Chernin.

But North Road is also in the market for acquisitions, with the first being the U.S. assets of Red Arrow Studios (Love Is Blind, The Circus).

Peter Chernin has launched The North Road Company, a global content studio that will bring together Chernin Entertainment, the U.S. assets of Red Arrow Studios, which includes Love Is Blind producer Kinetic Content, and Connor Schell’s non-scripted business Words + Pictures.

The move comes as the former Fox chief paid $200M for Red Arrow’s U.S. companies including Kinetic Content, The Circus producer Left/Right, 44 Blue Productions, the company behind Netflix’s Life After Death with Tyler Henry, Say Yes To The Dress producer Half Yard and Building Alaska producer Dorsey Pictures.

The new company will have access to hundreds of millions of dollars in financing for further acquisitions from Providence Equity Partners and Apollo and will open a London office with former Red Arrow Studios Chairman and CEO Jan Frouman, who Deadline revealed joined the company earlier this year, and former AMC Networks exec Kristin Jones.

FX’s The New York Times Presents has set its latest documentary feature, centered on controversial Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Revealed on Monday, The New York Times Presents‘ “Elon Musk’s Crash” course will premiere Friday, May 20 at 10 p.m. Pt. The doc comes from producer and director Emma Schwartz and features the work of The New York Times Reporters Cade Metz and Neal Boudette.

The feature will take a deep dive into Tesla vehicles and the issues with its autopilot capabilities. The investigation will reveal the “quixotic nature of Musk’s pursuit of self-driving technology, and the tragic results.”

The Murdochs, the media-mogul family that controls Fox News Channel, are about to be the subject of a new documentary series that will be distributed by one of their main rivals.

CNN expects to launch a six-part documentary series, “The Murdochs: Empire of Influence,” on CNN Plus, the streaming video site slated to launch in weeks to come. The series is produced with The New York Times and Left/Right and is based on the New York Times Magazine article “How Rupert Murdoch’s Empire of Influence Remade the World,” by journalists Jonathan Mahler and Jim Rutenberg. They serve as consulting producers on the series.

The docuseries will examine the rise of Rupert Murdoch, his global influence and the battle for succession among his children. CNN says the series “charts the high-stakes deal making, political maneuvering and dynastic betrayals — and how the ambitions of one family birthed one of the largest media empires in history.

To Live and Die in Alabama, the latest film in the New York Times Presents docuseries, will premiere on FX and Hulu on December 3 at 10 p.m. Et, it was announced today.

The film from director-producer Matt Kay examines the aftermath of the killing of three police officers in a shootout at an Alabama drug house. One man, Nathanial Woods, was sentenced to death for the shootings, even though he was never accused of even touching the murder weapon. The doc will examine Woods’ case in full, including allegations of police misconduct that were never raised in his trial. It will feature original reporting from Abby Ellin, Cydney Tucker and Dan Barry, along with producing from Lora Moftah.

FX and Hulu are moving from Britney Spears to Janet Jackson with their latest documentary in The New York Times Presents strand.

The cable network and streamer are set to launch Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson on November 19.

The film will tell the story of the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, which saw Justin Timberlake briefly expose Jackson’s breast to millions of viewers. Jackson’s career never recovered but Timberlake went from strength-to-strength.

The doc will examine the racial and cultural currents that collided on the Super Bowl stage, and explores how the incident impacted one of the most successful pop musicians in history.

As the widely watched Britney Spears conservator case plays out, another documentary about the legal battle and its fallout launches tonight. FX and Hulu will premiere Controlling Britney Spears, a follow-up film from the team behind the Emmy-nominated Framing Britney Spears.

Part of The New York Times Presents series, Controlling Britney Spears bows at 10 p.m. Et on the cable net and the streamer. It arrives four days before Netflix’s docu Britney vs. Spears.

Directed by Samantha Stark and Produced by Liz Day, Controlling Britney Spears promises bombshell allegations from whistleblowers who were among those with intimate knowledge of the singer’s daily life inside the conservatorship.

In a confidential report obtained by The Times, Spears told a court investigator in 2016 that her conservatorship had become “an oppressive and controlling tool against her.” As the investigative docu plays out, a portrait emerges of an intense surveillance apparatus that monitored every move she made.

HBO Max released a trailer for the second season of “The Other Two,” premiering Aug 26.

The second season sees ChaseDreams (Case Walker) entering retirement, leaving his older siblings Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke) to contend with a new famous family member: their mother Pat (Molly Shannon), who is now a talk show host.

The first two episodes will launch on Aug. 26, and then the next eight episodes of the season will drop two at a time up to and including on Sept. 16. The show is created, written and executive produced by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider and also executive produced by by Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer and Tony Hernandez. Pic will examine Juul, the e-cigarette company built on a promise to help millions of Americans kick their cigarette habit. A New York Times investigation reveals how the Silicon Valley darling lost its way and is now accused of bringing a new scourge to a whole new generation: vaping.

The announcement that FX has extended its deal with The New York Times was made by President of Original Programming, Nick Grad.

“The New York Times Presents continues to deliver some of the most compelling and timely news and feature documentaries on television, typified by the outstanding work on Framing Britney Spears and The Killing of Breonna Taylor,” said Grad.

The documentary shines a light on the Queen of Pop’s court battle for control of her estate and also re-examines the media’s handling of her life and career. Since its early February debut, the film has been generating considerable attention around the world.

FX documentary “Framing Britney Spears” is finally getting a U.K. release.

Comcast-backed pay-tv operator Sky has snapped up rights for the hit documentary, which aired earlier this month Stateside on the cabler and Hulu. The doc will debut on the Sky Documentaries channel as well as SVOD service Now TV on Feb. 16 at 9pm.

The acquisition is a coup for Sky, as it would have made sense for the documentary — given FX’s Disney ownership — to land on Disney Plus in international markets like the U.K. However, the only home that would have made sense for the doc is the forthcoming, adult-oriented Star tile, which launches in European markets only on Feb. 23. Considering the strong demand among U.K. audiences to watch the film, it’s likely the timings would have worked against a Star debut.

The FX docuseries The New York Times Presents takes a celebrity turn on the installment “Framing Britney Spears.” But this is no tabloid exposé, even as the gossip rags and paparazzi become inadvertently complicit. The series provides consistently dedicated longform journalism as a matter of course. Their beat is varied. It’s covered front line workers, booted a hacking network, and chased a killer.

“Framing Britney Spears” doesn’t present a homicide case, though legal minds might argue a life has been taken away. It is a true crime documentary, but the truth hasn’t been determined, and the crime is hard to define. There is a fiduciary element, and questionable mental health is a contributory factor. It is also a missing person’s case where the exact location of the victim-at-large is known. Well known and splashed across newsfeeds at a moment’s notice if there’s even a hint of a move.

The Conners star and executive producer Sara Gilbert, Rob Huebel (Childrens Hospital), Leland Orser (Brand New Cherry Flavor), Lyriq Bent (Four Brothers), J.R. Cacia (Infidel), Tate Donovan (Respect) and Kevin Dunn have been cast opposite Chris Messina in HBO Max pilot Verbatim, an anthology series from Brett Weiner, Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, Left/Right Productions and the New York Times.

Verbatim, based on the New York Times Op-Docs digital series, tackles actual events with all dialogue taken from primary sources and presented verbatim. The pilot episode follows the story of the 2019 college admissions scandal.

The roles are not being revealed. Messina is believed to be playing the scheme’s ringleader Rick Singer, Gilbert is likely Laura Smith, the lead FBI investigator on the case who also is narrating the pilot; Orser, Donovan and Dunn may be playing three of the wealthy parents charged in the bribing scandal.

Because of the series’ anthology nature, I hear that, except for Messina, who is expected to link the different cases throughout the series, the rest of the cast are guest stars for the pilot only.

Red Hour’s Nicholas Weinstock, Jackie Cohn and Stiller executive produce with Left/Right’s Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver and Kathleen Lingo for the New York Times. Scott Lochmus and Michelene Starnadori will produce.
