Richard Pike(II)
- Composer
- Additional Crew
"One of the best new scores I've heard in a while. It's bombastic, a little absurd and suitably very menacing" - ABC Classic FM, Sydney.
Attaining hypnotic, fluid worlds of sound, Richard Pike's music explores themes of repetition, stasis, regeneration, and rebirth. A multi-disciplinary composer, sound artist, singer as well as label curator, his practice lies at the intersections of experimental, ambient, techno, jazz and hybrid orchestral.
Pike's first drama score 'Romper Stomper' was nominated for the prestigious Australian AACTA Award in 2018. It was described as "a little absurd and, suitably, very menacing" by ABC Classic FM. He went on to score the 10-episode ABC TV crime-comedy 'Les Norton' (2019) with Rebel Wilson and David Wenham, Channel 7's based-on-a-true-story drama 'Australian Gangster' (2021) , and Stan TV's coming-of-age high school series 'Year Of' (2023).
Richard's work is often described as uncategorisable, crossing the worlds of post-rock, indie and art pop with his act PVT (Warp Records), modern New Age Jazz expressions with his trio Forgiveness (Gondwana Records), and a breadth of energetic narratives across his award-nominated soundtracks, ranging from live orchestral, string ensemble, solo piano, to pure analog synthesis - bringing to mind contemporaries Oneohtrix Point Never, Anna Meredith and Bobby Krlic.
He is regarded for the intimate world-building in his practice of slow, meditative music under the moniker Deep Learning. His latest album 'Evergreen' featured on Bandcamp's Best Electronic, and has recently supported UK luminaries James Holden and Gold Panda.
Scoring healing music for psychedelic therapy with Wavepaths, he also curates Salmon Universe Records and has been championed by BBC's Hannah Peel, Mary Anne Hobbs & Tom Ravenscroft, Fact Magazine, Electronic Sound Mag, KEXP Radio, The Quietus and many more.
He is also sought after for installation work, including with London's United Visual Artists and Sydney's Collider, and has made music for brands including Adidas, Fedex, Cartier, Hyundai and Nike. In 2024 Pike scored music for the Charli XCX and H&M brand takeover of Times Square, New York.
