Brazilian actors Alice Braga (“Queen of the South”) and Bianca Comparato (“3%”) have joined forces to launch South, a new production label based out of Los Angeles, New York and São Paulo. The company was established with financial support from Flagcx, the largest independent creative services holding company in Latin America.

South will debut its first feature project, Gabriela Amaral Almeida’s body-horror story “She, Crocodile,” at this year’s 12th edition of the San Sebastian Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, which will take place from Sept. 25 -27.

Described by the producers as a “horror fable,” “She, Crocodile” is the story of a young woman, the sole heiress to a luxury real estate brokerage in Rio de Janeiro, who slowly transforms into one of the titular reptiles. As a project, it received backing from the MacDowell Institute Residency program where Amaral wrote a full-50 page treatment.

Brazilian Gabriela Amaral Almeida’s “She, Crocodile,” Victoria Galardi “Hedgehogs” and “Rambler,” from Mexico’s Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, feature among the 14 projects being brought to market at San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum.

Further titles are from admired established helmers – Argentina’s Santiago Loza, Bolivia’s Martin Boulocq – or fast emerging directors such as Cuba’s Rosa Maria Rodríguez, Argentina’s Natalia Meta, Paraguay’s Pablo Lamar and Mexico-based Natalia López Gallardo.

One of the strongest lineups in years, the showcase is powered by the allure of the biggest Latin American co-production event in Europe, the need to drive into co-production to counter rising costs and the more specific dire straits of Argentina’s film industry.

“She, Crocodile” marks the first feature from New York City and São Paulo-based South, the new production company launched by ‘Queen of the South’ lead Alice Braga and ‘3%’ star Bianca Comparato.

Once every year or two a movie comes along that brings fresh energy to the found-footage horror movie, a terrain that’s been mercilessly, repetitiously over-tilled since “The Blair Witch Project” broke out a quarter-century ago. Unfortunately, “In Our Blood” does not capture that prize for 2024. Though a notch above the subgenre’s norm in terms of acting and production polish, documentarian Pedro Kos’ first narrative feature — in which two filmmakers investigate mysterious disappearances around Las Cruces, New Mexico — ultimately teases expectations too long en route to an underwhelming resolution.

With overt horror elements delayed until the last 20 minutes or so, the film ends up feeling like an attenuated prologue for a series in the general conceptual (if not budgetary) wheelhouse of “Blade” or “Underworld.” But it’s anyone’s guess whether this Fantasia premiere will spark the kind of enthusiasm that merits a single follow-up, let alone several.

Exclusive: Brittany O’Grady (The White Lotus) and E. J. Bonilla (The Exorcist: Believer) are leading under-the-radar thriller-horror In Our Blood, which will launch at the Fantasia Film Festival at the end of the month.

Heralding from doc filmmaker and Oscar short nominee Pedro Kos, who recently signed with CAA, the project is the first fully financed by Duncan Jones and Stuart Fenegan’s Liberty Films, under their initiative to support debut features.

If you need a song and video to get you in a really spooky mood this Halloween, the quartet Ladytron has got an awesome new track for you. The four-piece group of electric synth-smashers is gearing up for the release of their new album Time’s Arrow which will be available on January 30, 2023.

The video doesn’t just star members of the band, they landed actress Bianca Comparato to immerse herself in the creepy world created for this video.

Comparato is best known as a star of the Brazilian dystopian thriller series 3. The video was directed by Manuel Nogueira and was inspired by the horror films of Dario Argento and other masters of terror.

On the band for whom he made the video, Nogueira said, “Ladytron brings up that feeling of traveling back to the past. A foggy past between small nightclubs, concerts, and the grainy reverberation of our memories.

Cannes — Framing one of the first independent series co-productions between Brazil and Portugal, Ventre Studio, Coral Europa, Canal Brasil and Tvi are co-producing “Godless John,” with Brazilian acting legend Marco Nanini as John of God.

Onza Distribution has acquired international sales rights to the series. It has started introducing it to buyers at this week’s Mipcom trade fair.

Directed by Marina Person (“California”), the three-part series’ boasts a powerful Brazilian cast which has gained international recognition: Bianca Comparato, star of Netflix hit “3,” Karine Teles (“Second Mother”) and Antonio Saboia (“Bacurau”).

Two Portuguese actresses will be confirmed shortly.

Since early development, Ventre Studio has focused on the story’s international dimension, said Paula Cosenza, a producer and partner at Ventre Studio. That is enhanced by Portuguese characters who bring a “foreign perspective.”

The story itself may be a Brazilian one, but with an international impact and resonance worldwide.

When Netflix’s first Brazilian original series “3%” premiered in November 2016, it was an unexpected and quite pleasant discovery, combining narrative tropes familiar to fans of series like “The Hunger Games” with a fresh take on the post-apocalyptic genre.

Depicting a future society where the difference between the haves and have-nots is taken to the extreme, the focus of the first season was on Michele (Bianca Comparato) and the other 20-year-olds of the Inland slums competing in the Process — a competition to select the most promising members of society to move to the Offshore, which is a comparative paradise welcome only to the top 3 percent.

The Process proved to be brutal to the point of deadly, and much of what made Season 1 so addictive was how it structured the action around the Process, letting the competition power things forward even as characters sought to undermine it. One might have expected Season...

Sometimes, when Netflix releases a “date announcement,” it’s little more than a text on a screen. And sometimes, it’s a proper teaser that gives us a true taste of what’s in store for the upcoming season.

3%, Netflix’s futuristic sci-fi thriller in which countless twenty-year-olds undergo a ruthless elimination process in hopes of becoming part of an elite few with access to their holy land, appears destined to remain in viewers’ queues unfinished or unwatched.

Adapted from creator Pedro Aguilera’s made-for-tv movie of the same name, 3% is Netflix’s first entirely Brazilian production, and no doubt a byproduct of the streaming service’s success with the crime drama Narcos. The eight-episode first season, looking to capitalize on its timely themes and painfully deliberate diversity, showcases a wealth of well-intentioned observations and opinions on modern society and governing bodies. And yet, the series ultimately fails to produce the compelling, compassionate, bone-deep commentary its setup could elicit.

In a not-too-distant dystopian future, the show opens as some combination of overpopulation and lack of a sustainable food and/or water supply have led to slum-like living conditions for all.

If Netflix’s algorithms know that you’re a “Hunger Games” fan, you might have noticed the appearance of the new Brazilian drama “3%” in your recommended series queue. The eight-episode first season, created by Pedro Aguilera, depicts a dystopian world where 3 percent of an impoverished society have the opportunity to ascend to a better life… if they survive the selection process.
