You know that feeling when you stumble upon a creator who just gets it? That’s Taylor Sheridan for you. Over the past few years, he’s basically become the king of modern Western television, turning out hit after hit faster than a quickdraw contest. What makes Sheridan’s shows so special isn’t just their gritty authenticity or stunning cinematography – it’s how they manage to capture the essence of America’s evolving identity, from its dusty frontiers to its gleaming skyscrapers.

And boy, has Sheridan been busy. Since Yellowstone first saddled up in 2018, he’s created a small empire of interconnected shows that explore everything from historical epics to contemporary crime dramas. His universe has grown so vast that it’s getting harder to keep track of all the gems (and occasional rough stones) in his collection.

From family shenanigans to R-rated humor, TV shows set in the 1990s blend nostalgia with cultural relevance for both old and new audiences. City on a Hill authentically showcases Boston's crime scene of the '90s, while Cruel Summer twists '90s nostalgia with modern storytelling. Everything Sucks! delivers a realistic portrayal of '90s high school life, while Clarice dives deep into a '90s crime drama with a female lead.
The sole purpose of rewatching some of the best TV shows of the 1990s is to bring the audience back to the nostalgia of the decade. However, there are some modern series set in the iconic era of grunge fashion, upbeat pop music and changing technology. While these shows are more contemporary, they focus on the social and historical issues that defined the time.

Almost a decade after playing Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma,” David Oyelowo delved further back in time in American history to shine a spotlight on another figure, Bass Reeves. On the Paramount+ series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” the acclaimed actor steps into the shoes of this little-known real-life character and portrays him from the days of his enslavement through the late 1870s, when he has established himself as one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals in the nation. It is a performance of such range and emotional nuance that Emmy voters could very well recognize him with his third nomination next month.
It is not a coincidence that Oyelowo decided to inhabit these two important men from different centuries. As Oyelowo recently shared in an interview with Gold Derby, “I really enjoy the challenge of taking someone or something that the audience thinks they know and bringing depth,...

David Oyelowo (‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’) on portraying ‘a man who really moved the needle historically’
“I couldn’t believe that a show or a film… in an expansive, big-scale, John Ford-ian way hadn’t existed,” recalls David Oyelowo when he was approached years ago about a project centering on the real-life frontiersman Bass Reeves, who was one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals following the Civil War. The actor — who executive producers and stars in the title role of the Paramount+ limited series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” — thought it was a “head scratcher” that nobody had adapted his story to the screen with the character in the leading role. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
This is not the first time Oyelowo has portrayed a historical figure on screen, of course, as he previously starred as Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay’s “Selma.” The actor shares that he finds “real joy” in “playing characters that really moved the needle historically, but...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Lawmen: Bass Reeves finale.
A deleted KKK confrontation scene in the Lawmen: Bass Reeves finale would have provided closure to Jennie's story arc and tied up loose ends with other characters. The decision to remove the scene was made to create a more "impactful" ending that focused on the parallel experiences of Bass and Jennie revisiting their pasts. Removing the scene raises questions about the connection between the racist girl Clementine, her brother Brent, and Rachel Reeves, as well as what happened to Arthur Mayberry, potentially leaving gaps in the overall series.
One deleted scene left out of the Lawmen: Bass Reeves finale would have completely changed the ending for a crucial character in the series. The eight-part miniseries concluded with Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) facing off against the recently discovered Mr. Sundown (Barry Pepper) in an intense Old West shootout. While Bass' fictionalized moral and...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves has brought the true story of Bass Reeves’ legendary career as a U.S. Deputy Marshal to life. But at the core of the story has been the love between Bass and his wife, Jennie Reeves. David Oyelowo and City on a Hill alum Lauren E. Banks were tasked with telling this true love story, and Oyelowo (who executive produced the season in addition to starring) tells TV Insider they “searched far and wide” for the perfect actor to play Jennie. They found what they needed in Banks, whose audition Oyelowo says was one of the best he’s ever seen. “I’ve produced a few shows now. I don’t think I’ve ever had an audition tape have quite that effect on the brain trust as hers did,” he tells TV Insider in the video above. “It was just such a no-brainer, and that continued...

When Lawmen: Bass Reeves viewers first meet David Oyelowo’s character, creator Taylor Sheridan’s version of legendary Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves is not the man that many history buffs speak of. He is not the mystical lawman figure who many say influenced the creation of the Lone Ranger character in Hollywood.
This Bass Reeves (portrayed by Oyelowo) is a fearful but devoted enslaved soldier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He is forced into service by Arkansas slave plantation owner and Confederate Army Major George Reeves (played by Shea Whigham). White Confederate soldiers and Black slaves forced to participate in the war instantly take notice that Bass is treated differently by Major Reeves: He’s a slave who is allowed to ride on top of a horse next to his owner, as the officer knows Bass has a gift of being an accurate shot with a rifle and gun.

Someone Bass thought he’d never see again pushes his way back into the deputy U.S. marshal’s life at the end of this week’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves. And when Reeves comes face-to-face with a man who killed someone he cared about, is it any wonder that the former slave’s moral certitude seems like it’s about to take a beating?

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode five opens with the disturbing sight of a dead man hanging from a tree. Attached to his chest is a note that reads, “Bass Reeves will swing here.”
Bass (David Oyelowo) stakes out an area, sending Billy (Forrest Goodluck) into Bywater’s General Store while watching what goes down from afar. Billy returns to report that five armed men are hanging out inside, including the outlaw, Jim Webb. Bass and Billy move in closer, and Bass immediately comes under fire as he approaches the building.
Bass manages to make it to the building and exchanges Bible passages with Webb and his men. Billy and Bass bust into the store through different doors, and the ensuing shootout results in a few of Webb’s...

Bass Reeves gets a lot of well-deserved fame for being a legendary gunslinger. But his wife, Nellie Jennie Reeves, was a badass in her own right. (Though the church-going Mrs. Reeves likely wouldn’t love us referring to her that way.)
So TVLine jumped at the chance to speak with Lawmen: Bass Reeves‘ Lauren E. Banks, who plays Jennie opposite David Oyelowo’s Bass in the Paramount+ drama. Read on to hear the City on a Hill alum tease what might happen when trouble comes Jennie’s way later this season — and stick around to find out how prep for...

The show may be called Lawmen: Bass Reeves, but Bass's success as a lawman relies on his love of family, including his wife, Jennie.
Lauren E. Banks plays Jennie with so much heart. Through her performance, you feel Bass leaning on her love and strength, secure in the notion that he's leaving those most important to him in very capable hands.
Their faith in each other gives them wings, allowing them to rise above their heartbreaking past as a couple, as parents, and as landowners in the early 20th Century.
We spoke with Banks about the challenges playing Jennie brings to her and why their marriage and family stand out against a crowd of other families on TV.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a miniseries about the first black Deputy Marshal, west of the Mississippi, and the fifth episode promises internal conflicts and an old nemesis. The clip from episode 5 features David Oyelowo as Bass Reeves, showcasing key dynamics and an engaging musical moment. The show boasts an impressive cast including Dennis Quaid, Demi Singleton, Lauren E. Banks, and Donald Sutherland, and new episodes are released on Sundays on Paramount+.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves dramatizes the life and times of a real-world figure: the first black Deputy Marshal west of the Mississippi River. Created by Chad Feehan, the series was initially in consideration as a spinoff to Taylor Sheridan’s drama miniseries 1883; though Lawmen: Bass Reeves eventually became its own entity, Sheridan is still an executive producer. The miniseries debuted on November 5th on Paramount+ and will run eight episodes in total.

Frasier made a fool of himself this week jockeying for a professorship, while David made a fool of himself trying to improve a disappointing grade. Yep, they’re definitely related.
As Thursday’s episode opens, David is bragging about how he always gets straight A’s… until Frasier slaps him with a B on his latest psychology paper. (He’s devastated, of course.) Frasier’s stint as a guest lecturer is going well enough, but he wants to be promoted to full professor, even though Olivia tells him he needs years of lecturing to attain that. Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode 4 sheds light on Edwin Jones, a charismatic visionary who uses persuasive speeches to inspire hope in the black community. Edwin Jones claims to be a businessman from Chicago and promises to help every black community member own their own land, but his plan remains unclear. While Bass Reeves and Edwin Jones share a belief in God, their contrasting expressions of faith and principles could lead to a fascinating interaction if they meet in the series.
Edwin Jones has become a prominent yet still somewhat mysterious supporting character in Lawmen: Bass Reeves. The Paramount+ series has primarily focused on the historical depiction of real-life Old West lawman Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo), who famously became one of the first black Deputy U.S. Marshals in the southern United States. Much is obvious after Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 4.
We were right in our assumption that Billy would prefer to follow in Bass's footsteps than carry on with a life of crime, and he's got a lot to learn from his new mentor, especially when it comes to life, death, and justice.
What isn't as obvious until you take a closer look is how much Bass's job will impact his marriage.
In our interview with David Oyelowo, he spoke about the importance of the Reeves family to the telling of this story.
We'll drill a little deeper with an upcoming interview with Lauren E. Banks, who plays Jennie Reeves.
Simply put, without their deep and abiding love and their unwavering support of one another, Bass and Jennie might not survive the new path their lives have taken.

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode four kicks off with an unusual scene. Bass (David Oyelowo) sings while shooting a hole through a hat. He’s wearing tattered clothing, and it’s quickly obvious this is part of a carefully planned disguise.
The reason? Reeves needs to appear nonthreatening when he arrives at a woman’s door. Although initially leery of this stranger’s appearance, the woman – Widow Dolliver (Dale Dickey) – lowers her rifle and invites him inside, impressed that he can quote the Bible.
Her adult children, Wiley and Darrell, show up at dinner time and get into a fistfight…not with Bass, but amongst themselves. Widow Dolliver asks Bass’ help in moving them into the bedroom, all the while fretting about the sleepless nights these ne’er-do-wells have cost her.

Bass Reeves became an American legend against all odds. He was born into slavery but escaped during adulthood, successfully avoiding recapture until the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery. In the years that followed, he reunited with the love of his life, Jennie Reeves, and they would go on to have 11 children as Bass made a career in law enforcement. Everything about Bass’s life created a sense of justice that’s inalienable from his identity, Lawmen: Bass Reeves star David Oyelowo tells TV Insider. Series creator Chad Feehan previously told us that the Paramount+ series is about the triumph of the human spirit exemplified through Bass (Oyelowo) and Jennie (Lauren E. Banks). Oyelowo calls that a “perfect” description, “because what [Bass] did and went on to do shouldn’t have been possible at that time.” “Three thousand arrests, 32 years in law enforcement, a father to over 10 kids, someone who was enslaved and...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a standalone series that is not connected to Yellowstone, despite initial announcements suggesting otherwise. Lawmen: Bass Reeves focuses on the story of one major protagonist, unlike Yellowstone which follows an ensemble cast. Bass Reeves is rooted in historical accuracy, while Yellowstone is purely fictional, allowing for more creative freedom in storytelling.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a very different show from Yellowstone despite the two series being originally announced to be under the same narrative universe. Lawmen: Bass Reeves arguably owes itself to the overwhelming success and critical acclaim of Yellowstone, which through five seasons has created an entire Western franchise for Paramount+ and CBS with several spinoffs and prequel series. Despite the ever-changing status of the final six episodes of Yellowstone, lead actor Kevin Costner has officially revealed that he will not be a part of Yellowstone's conclusion even though the series was slated to return...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves maintains historical accuracy in its depiction of the legendary lawman and the infamous Hanging Judge, Judge Isaac Parker. Episode 3 introduces Judge Parker, who is known for his belief in law and order and his reputation for sentencing people to death by hanging. Judge Parker's prisoners were held at the notorious Hell on the Border jail in Fort Smith, Arkansas, which reflected his low regard for their lives.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves features the real-life depictions of the Hell on the Boarder prison and Judge Issac Parker, better known as the "Hanging Judge". Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode three picks up the action on May 10, 1875. Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) has been offered a job as a Deputy US Marshal, and before heading to the Fort Smith Courthouse to speak with Judge Parker about the position, he kisses his beautiful, pregnant wife Jennie (Lauren E. Banks) goodbye.
“Make us proud, you hear?” says Jennie.
Bass engages in a conversation with a young man under arrest as he’s waiting to speak with the judge. The panicking young man asks for Bass’ help, claiming the man he killed was attacking him – but Bass doesn’t respond. Instead, he heads into Judge Parker’s office and learns Parker (Donald Sutherland) was encouraged to hire him because he’s Black. However, that’s not why Parker’s making him a Deputy US Marshal.
