Although she skipped the red carpet, Karla Sofía Gascón, the embattled star nominated for best actress for her performance in “Emilia Pérez,” attended the Oscars on Sunday night at the tail end of a troubled awards cycle.
She first appeared during Conan O’Brien’s monologue, after the comedian made a joke about the number of f-bombs her team likely uttered this award season. He then spoke directly to Gascón as the camera locked onto her in the crowd, saying. “If you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
Gascón received swift backlash after several tweets from 2020 and 2021 went viral in the wake of her Oscar nomination. They included hateful messages about Muslims, diversity at the Oscars and the death of George Floyd.
She quickly apologized, saying in a statement that, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.

Conan O’Brien‘s first time hosting the Oscars appears to have gone down a storm, as fans have praised the former late-night host for his light-hearted and casual approach to the star-studded ceremony. The evening opened with a skit inspired by the Best Picture nominated The Substance, which saw O’Brien emerging from Demi Moore‘s body in his black tuxedo. Although, he left a shoe behind and had to climb back inside to retrieve it. When he appeared on stage for the opening monologue, he began with his trademark self-deprecating humor, saying, “I know you’re thinking, ‘Did Conan not have work done? He looks his age.'” He continued, quipping, “A Complete Unknown, A Real Pain, and Nosferatu, those were just some of the names I was called on the red carpet.” The comedian also poked fun at some of the Best Picture nominees, including Wicked, joking, “The...

In a sense, you could say it was like the good old days. Oscar night, whether the telecast is great or just so-so (I’m all but incapable of finding the Oscars outright bad — I’m too much of an entertainment junkie), always gave you the feeling that Hollywood was at the center of the world. The Oscars were about quality meeting popularity, about a kind of middle-of-the-road solid ground — and, at moments, artistic fearlessness. They were a dream of how Hollywood wanted to be seen, a referendum on the state of the movie business. The image that the industry...

ABC allowed Carrie Underwood to reintroduce herself on Sunday, offering curious viewers a taste of what she’ll bring to the judges’ table when American Idol officially returns for Season 23 on March 9 (8/7c).
The 30-minute post-Oscars special kicked off with Underwood’s “first day on the other side of the table,” a mere 20 years after she won Idol herself. One of the biggest changes she noticed was the impressive quality of the golden tickets, a considerable upgrade from the “yellow piece of paper” she recalled being handed back in 2005.

Sunday, March 2 is the day we’ve been waiting for all awards season — the 2025 Oscars! The best in film from the last year will be recognized during the 97th Academy Awards, kicking off nice and early for the second year in a row at 7/6c on ABC and Hulu. While movies like Wicked and Dune: Part Two made a splash this year — and snagged a handful of nominations each — this year’s nominees are a little less blockbuster-geared than with 2024’s epic Barbie–Oppennheimer race. The other (more quietly loved) films in contention for Best Picture inn 2025 are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance. It’s anyone’s night! And after four years with Jimmy Kimmel at the helm, the ceremony is turning to first-time Oscars host Conan O’Brien, and we can’t wait to see how he brings...

The 97th Academy Awards celebrated the year in film by handing out those coveted gold statues to the performers, creators, and musicians who managed to stand out in their very crowded fields of Tinseltown talent. The evening was mostly focused on the films in contention for the night’s biggest prizes, but there were several moments where the moment became about more than just what was seen on the silver screen. Here’s a rundown of all of the overtly and sometimes covertly political statements made throughout the night at the 2025 Oscars. The first came from Best Film Editing presenter Daryl Hannah, who used just two words to make her point: “Slava Ukraina.” The phrase is a showing of support for Ukraine at a time when the nation is still fighting off the Russian invasion that began three years ago but comes at a particularly perilous moment for American-Ukrainian relations...

The Oscars In Memoriam segment continues to stir upset among viewers as the 2025 ceremony snubbed stars like Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty, Tony Todd, Olivia Hussey, and more in its most recent televised presentation. But as viewers began to convey their annoyance over the snub, it must be noted that the Oscars revealed a link that would take viewers to a fuller list of tributes, which includes Trachtenberg, Doherty, and Todd. You can see the full roundup here. Among the talented performers who did make it onto the In Memoriam screen were the likes of Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones, Louis Gossett Jr., Donald Sutherland, and so many more. The presentation was oddly set to the tune of Mozart’s “Requiem,” a.k.a. “Lacrimosa.” The most notable tribute came at the top of the presentation as Morgan Freeman introduced the segment with a special remark for former costar and recently deceased Gene Hackman.

Despite Dune Part 2 winning multiple awards at the 2025 Oscars, Zendaya was nowhere to be found. While one of her movies was nominated, another was not nominated at all. Her film, Challengers, was snubbed. Although she has not confirmed this is why she didn’t attend, it’s the most logical reason. The actress is also currently filming Season 3 of Euphoria and is gearing up for Christopher Nolan‘s movie The Odyssey. Not to mention, she recently got engaged to her Spider-Man costar, Tom Holland, so she could be busy wedding planning. Zendaya was not nominated for Best Actress for Challengers, and the film did not nab a Best Score nomination, despite receiving widespread acclaim. Challengers received four Golden Globe nominations and took home the award for Best Original Score. Dune Part II received five Oscar nominations, including Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture.

AMC‘s Anne Rice Immortal Universe just dropped its biggest Talamasca teaser yet during the Mayfair Witches Season 2 finale on Sunday, March 2. The TV universe’s Twitter/X account dropped a short video teaser featuring a URL (talamas.ca) that leads to a “surveillance” site monitoring characters from Interview With the Vampire, Mayfair Witches, and The Talamasca. But one video, in particular, is the only footage that’s glitching. Is this a hint that Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) is the Interview With the Vampire character who will be appearing in The Talamasca, like executive producer Mark Johnson teased at New York Comic Con? In Rice’s books and the AMC universe, the Talamasca is the supernatural watchdog agency that keeps tabs on the vampires, witches, and other occult creatures to prevent the human world from discovering their existence. The Talamasca series is gearing up to debut in 2025, and the Immortal...

Tensions are high and only getting higher on The White Lotus, after another brush with death this week.
As Sunday’s episode opens, Victoria dreams she’s standing on the beach as a huge tsunami wave crashes down on her. “Could be some kind of warning,” Piper tells her — and with Timothy staring down a prison sentence for financial crimes, yeah, there’s a storm a-comin’. At breakfast, Rick decides to stop staring at resort owner Sritala and walks right up to her, telling her he’s a film producer (?) who wants to put her in a big Hollywood movie.

A viewing of Emilia Pérez, the musical crime thriller nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, is something like a fever dream of dialogue, drama, song, and dance. And perhaps no scene captures the hallucinatory excitement quite like one featuring Zoe Saldaña — who plays Rita, a hard-working lawyer with a unique assignment — performing her signature song from the film’s score, “El Mal,” which received the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 97th Academy Awards.
Directed by Jacques Audiard, with all songs written by French duo Clément Ducol and Camille, the film centers on a Mexican cartel leader’s search for self and handles its musical moments with a technicolor, operatic theatricality — the perfect context for Saldaña, who trained as a dancer before becoming an actor. “The origin of Emilia Pérez lies in the desire for an opera,” explains Audiard of the genre-bending epic. “The hazards of...

The Oscars are in full swing and after a strong start with performances from Wicked favorites Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Conan O’Brien took to the stage for his introduction as host. And as expected he delivered some big swings with his jokes, most notably calling out Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón to her face during the monologue. For those less aware, Gascón came under fire recently after social media posts with racist remarks resurfaced. During the monologue, O’Brien noted how much swearing occurred in the film Anora, saying the Best Picture nominee had only three more expletives delivered than Gascón’s publicist upon learning about the social media posts. “Little fact for you, “Anora” uses the F word 479 times. As she left the stage, Erivo entered to sing “Home” from The Wiz while dressed in a white gown embellished with flowers. Halle Berry and Adrien Brody just shocked the entire Oscars red carpet by locking lips and recreating their controversial moment from the 2003 awards. When Berry saw Brody on the carpet, she turned to his girlfriend and said, “Sorry, Georgina, but I have to do it.” She then grabbed onto his neck and kissed him hard on the lips. Everyone around them cheered loudly. She then hugged Brody as he gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Best Oscar moment ever,” Ah host Kit Hoover yelled. The moment happened in front of Brody’s partner since 2020, Georgina Chapman, who laughed it off and then exchanged a kiss with Brody. After Brody won the Oscar for The Pianist in 2003, he ran to the stage, where he kissed Berry on the lips for several seconds and dipped her. “I bet they didn’t tell you that was in the gift bag,” he said as he began his speech.

Conan O’Brien kicked off the Oscars with a bang, opening his hosting debut with a monologue that poked fun at the films and stars nominated at Hollywood’s biggest night.
Before the jokes, in a pre-taped segment, O’Brien emerged from the back of Demi Moore’s body à la “The Substance” and crawled out, not necessarily younger or hotter, but at least in a tuxedo.
“Hi, Demi. How are you?” O’Brien said when he walked onto the Dolby Theatre stage. “That was weird. Yeah, awkward. I’m missing some car keys.”
“Welcome to the 97th Academy Awards,” O’Brien went on.

Eleven years after John Travolta introduced “Adele Dazeem” to the world (if you know, you know), Sunday’s Oscars welcomed another pair of Wicked-ly talented performers to the stage — Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
ABC’s broadcast of the 97th Academy Awards opened with a medley of songs from Jon M. Chu’s multi-nominated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, a “what if?” prequel to the events of The Wizard of Oz. Erivo stars as Elphaba, the so-called Wicked Witch of the West, alongside Grande as Glinda (née Ga-linda… it’s a long story), who comes to be known...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for 1923 Season 2 Episode 2, “The Rapist Is Winter.”] Viewers got an update on Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty) and his family’s fate in the second episode of 1923‘s second season. The episode, which came out on Sunday, March 2, on Paramount+, revealed that Zane hadn’t received any proper medical attention following the beating he received at the end of Season 1, his wife, Alice (Joy Osmanski) was still imprisoned, and their children were remanded to the state custody. Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) went into Boseman with Sheriff McDowell (Robert Patrick) to negotiate Zane and Alice’s release and the reunion of their family, ultimately convincing a judge to let the Davis family be remanded to the Dutton’s home on the ranch (Kevin Costner‘s John Dutton arranged the same deal for Piper Perabo‘s Summer in Yellowstone Season 5). Zane and Alice were separated and arrested for miscegenation, a racist crime that made it illegal for ...

Jonathan Bailey is not dancing through the Oscars. The Wicked star wasn’t at the award show at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday for a good reason, and his costar Jeff Golblum explained his absence on the red carpet. “He’s on stage right now in England, doing Richard II,” he told E! host Zuri Hall. “He’s a masterful, eighth-degree black belt actor.” Bailey is starring in Richard II through May 10 at the Bridge Theatre. His run began on February 10. The play, which runs for two hours and 40 minutes, is about the former King of England. Goldblum fawned over Bailey, saying, “I adore Jonathan Bailey. He’s great in our movie. What a great actor.” He wore a Prada suit with a white jacket, floral shirt, purple scarf, and black bowtie. He added a purple orchid boutonnière to his jacket. Bailey will soon follow in Goldblum’s...

Hours before the 2025 Oscars red carpet began, rumors circulated online that former Vice President Kamala Harris could be attending the awards ceremony. However, less than an hour before the show, her husband, Doug Emhoff, revealed that she had much different plans for the big night. “Oscars watch party prep,” Emhoff wrote on X, alongside a post of Harris pouring chips into a bowl. The politician had a big smile on her face as she looked right at the camera while performing the party prep in her kitchen. Emhoff’s post came after Deadline reported that there was “heavier than usual” security at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, leading to speculation that the enhanced security measures were due to Harris’ potential appearance. While one Academy source told the outlet that rumors of the former vice president’s attendance were “not true,” another insider said that her “decision not to attend...

CNN made history as the television’s first 24-hour news channel when it debuted in 1980 and has been offering ’round-the-clock coverage of U.S. and world events since then. As the news cycle keeps turning, though, CNN hasn’t been able to escape the kinds of disgraces that have plagued competitors MSNBC and Fox News. Here are some of CNN’s biggest controversies so far. 1998: CNN retracts Tailwind story In 1998, the results of an independent investigation led CNN to retract and apologize for a NewsStand: CNN & Time report that claimed the United States military used lethal sarin nerve gas to kill American defectors during a 1970 mission in Laos codenamed Operation Tailwind, per The New York Times. Two staffers were dismissed over the inaccurate story, and one resigned. “We acknowledge serious faults in the use of sources who provided Newsstand with the original reports and therefore retract the Tailwind story,...

After widespread internet speculation that Mason Disick, the teenage son of Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, secretly welcomed a child, his famous mom took to her Instagram Story to address the rumor. “I rarely address rumors or conspiracies regarding myself or my family, but this is about my child and it feels wrong to let anyone thing for a second that these lies are remotely true. They are not,” she wrote. “Mason does not have a child. These accounts that pretend to be him are definitely not. They are Fake.” In February, a rumor circulated on Reddit that Mason had confirmed his baby news on a private Instagram account. When someone asked if he had a child, it was alleged that he responded, “Yea I did.” He also allegedly referred to the situation as a “failed protection.” Mason has a public Instagram account, but this fake exchange was said to...

Look…I know Shane Gillis sells out stadiums, has appeared in Super Bowl commercials, and has leveraged his popularity into a popular Netflix comedy series. I know people dig his jokes and all-around “regular guy” vibe and I really can’t speak as to whether his humor is a reflection of his actual values or just an act that he knows appeals to a certain block of the population. He clearly has pretty good timing and presence, but I am simply not buying what he is interested in selling and based on the in-house audience’s reaction to much of the evening’s offerings of sketches, neither were they.
The evening took off on a rocky note from the jump, with a cobbled together cold open that tried to satirize the off-the-rails Oval Office meeting that took place on Friday between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio,...

If they had their druthers, Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) and Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) would never spend any time together at all. The dramatic tension between the two Young and the Restless characters is just too potent. In the past, they’ve traded barbs with one another in situations where one or both could easily walk away. Now, that’s not possible as the two women are being held captive by a mystery man (or woman) who knows about their past animosity in detail. Viewers were treated to a series of episodes last week in which the two women were acting like they were trying out for a female version of The Odd Couple wrapped in a WWE showdown and mixed with an episode of Law & Order! No stranger to being kidnapped, Sharon woke up in a dirty room with broken down furniture. Case has always brought a grounded realism to her character,...

Oftentimes hotel-set TV shows construct their fictional accommodations on Hollywood soundstages, but the luxurious properties seen in The White Lotus are yours for the booking. For three seasons now, the HBO hit has made real-life Four Seasons properties into fictional White Lotus hotels. On the show, White Lotus locations are unlucky, but their Four Seasons counterparts have been anything but. “Four Seasons has observed significant interest from guests eager to explore Hawaii and Italy following the first two seasons,” Marc Speichert, the hotel company’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, told Wallpaper recently. “We’re already seeing a similar positive response for Thailand as excitement builds around Season 3.” And those aren’t the only real-life hotels films that had moments in the spotlight, as you’ll see below… Hotel del Coronado This classic comedy film Some Like It Hot featured the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California, as its Seminole Ritz hotel.
