Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, Timothee Chalamet’s awards campaign for A Complete Unknown continues unabated. On Friday, NBC announced Chalamet will host the Jan. 25 edition of Saturday Night Live and serve as the night’s musical guest. The expectation is that Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new film, will perform Dylan songs on the broadcast.
Regardless of the playlist, Chalamet’s dual role on the broadcast will make some Saturday Night Live history. He’s among a select few non-professional singers or traditional musicians who have served as SNL hosts and performed as musicians on the same show, joining names like Lily Tomlin, Desi Arnaz, and Deion Sanders.
The SNL appearance is the latest high-profile stop on Chalamet’s press tour and awards campaign for A Complete Unknown. The actor has spent the last month promoting his work in James Mangold’s film – including a...

An MCU star's adaptation of an H.G. Wells classic gets a glowing review from VFX artists 22 years after its release. The English author, a pioneer in science fiction, has seen his imaginative works frequently adapted to the screen since the 1930s. Early adaptations include Island of Lost Souls (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Things to Come (1936), and The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1937), which captured audiences with their groundbreaking special effects and blended the author's thought-provoking themes with cinematic spectacle.
Later adaptations continued to bring the sci-fi author's visionary stories to life, and often reflected contemporary concerns. The War of the Worlds (1953) and The Time Machine (1960) highlighted Cold War fears and a fascination with time travel, respectively. Subsequent remakes – such as The Island of Dr. Moreau, Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds (2005) starring Tom Cruise, and the visually updated The Time Machine (2002) – introduced new interpretations of the author's themes, and almost always with impressive visual effects.

The Twilight Zone season 1, episode 3: “Mr. Denton on Doomsday”.The suburbs dream of violence. Asleep in their drowsy villas, sheltered by the benevolent shopping malls, they wait patiently for the nightmares that will wake them into a more passionate world.—J. G. Ballard, Kingdom ComeRod Serling cuts a striking figure in American iconography. A handsome, shadowy silhouette in a stark suit and tie with a cigarette perched between two fingers, Serling would rhapsodize dark legends from the depths of the nation’s fractured postwar psyche every week on The Twilight Zone (1959–64). Born in Syracuse, New York, Serling maintained his quintessentially East Coast everyman aesthetic even after moving to Los Angeles, following the major players in the television industry. Dark brows furrowed, mouth set in a stern, straight line—Serling wasn’t a vain man, but he was conscious that his image projected this persona and always ensured that he...

Novelization fans know the majority of literary tie-ins stick closely to their source materials rather than stray from them, but whenever one does make notable changes, they take notice. Gremlins is one such case. Indeed, the late George Gipe stayed true to the spirit of that Christmas spectacle we have all come to love and celebrate each winter, however, the author also took artistic license — primarily with the adorable face of the Gremlins franchise, to whom he gave an origin that is truly out of this world.
Everyone knows the gist of Gremlins by now: A small American town is overrun by monsters around Christmas, and only one young man — along with his strange new pet named “Gizmo” — can put an end to the holiday horror. Gipe, who also penned the novelizations for Back to the Future and Explorers, didn’t think to change the basic story of Joe Dante...

To achieve the status of a true icon in Hollywood, actors must work consistently to prove their skills across years and decades, although this can also mean that some legacies end better than others. Although many performers are immediately associated with success and prestige, when looking at the final entries in some stars' filmographies, certain movies tarnish their incredible legacies. This may be due to an actor's declining popularity in their later years or just strange creative decisions that led to the release of lackluster final movies.
Some of the greatest actors of all time have an unfortunate final film that failed to live up to their best work. While many of these final movies had their merit, they just did not have the same level of gravitas or impact as the films that made them famous and that they will be primarily remembered for. The Witcher season 4 doesn't have a release date yet, which is no surprise given how the show has recast its lead role with Liam Hemsworth. Geralt of Rivia's mentor will also look different, as Vesemir's actor also won't be returning due to scheduling conflicts. But according to Netflix, the rest of The Witcher's regular cast will be returning, barring those who died during the climactic end of season 3.
The Witcher season 4 will also be bringing on several new cast members, such as fan-favorite vampire Regis, who will be played by Laurence Fishburne, as well as Danny Woodburn as Geralt's friend, the Dwarf swordsman Zoltan Chivay. With these additions, The Witcher's next outing will have a star-studded cast as the Netflix show reaches a tense point of adapting Andrzej Sapkowski's books.

Sci-fi movies of the 1950s reflected Cold War anxieties and explored futuristic themes from popular novels of the era. The 1950s saw adaptations of classic sci-fi novels like The War of the Worlds and Journey to the Center of the Earth, revitalizing their themes. Films like The Thing From Another World and Invasion of the Body Snatchers played on fears of the time, influenced by the space race and the aftermath of the Second World War.
The 1950s produced plenty of memorable sci-fi book adaptations, as filmmakers sought inspiration from both pulp fiction and well-respected authors. In the aftermath of the Second World War, and with the Cold War in full swing, sci-fi in the 1950s reflected the common anxieties of the era. The atomic age and the space race both represented frightening new frontiers in the world of science, and many sci-fi movies also borrowed from the horror genre.

European production and distribution group StudioCanal has launched a new label, StudioCanal Stories, focused on book-to-screen adaptations. The outfit will be the first of its kind in France and follows StudioCanal’s creation of a dedicated literary adaptation division in 2022.

Some sci-fi remakes can elevate original concepts, like the emotionally impactful Invisible Man (2020). Other examples, like Dredd (2012), improve upon their predecessors by sticking to the popular source material. In all instances, great sci-fi movie remakes bring something new to the table rather than retelling the same old story.
While some sci-fi movie remakes can detract from stellar source material, others can take a great idea to the next level. In the modern film industry, establishing a successful original IP is the holy grail, with both remakes and sequels providing a particularly lucrative market. Often, these follow-ups can feel like cheap cash grabs trying to capitalize on an audience's existing goodwill. On rare occasions, however, a sci-fi movie remake can not just bring something new to the table, but also improve on what came before.

Sci-fi films pave the way for new techniques and styles in cinema, influencing other genres and improving the medium as a whole. While many sci-fi films have been successfully remade for modern audiences, influential classics like Metropolis and The Sorcerers are still waiting for their turn. Movies like They Live and Demon Seed explore relevant themes of aliens and AI, making them ripe for remakes that could captivate a modern audience.
Sci-fi as a genre has led to some of the best films and stories of all time, but several films that helped define the genre happened decades ago and are yet to receive a remake for modern audiences. Sci-fi is often the first place where new techniques and experimental styles in film are employed. These films then influence other genres and help to improve the medium as a whole.

Jonathan Banks's role in "Constellation" is a chance to make up for his disappointing 60-second cameo in "The Expanse" 9 years ago. "Constellation" is an exciting sci-fi project created by Peter Harness and directed by Michelle MacLaren, and it also includes elements from the horror genre. Jonathan Banks will play a Nobel Prize-winning physicist in "Constellation" named Henry, who is involved in Jo's research and will have a significant role in the show's plot.
Jonathan Banks's role in the upcoming sci-fi series Constellation might be the perfect way of making amends for what happened nine years ago on another science-fiction TV show. A minor work from a major filmmaker, Presence is Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh’s first official foray into supernatural horror. Shot primarily in a single, standalone set over less than two weeks and a limited shooting schedule, Presence doesn’t reinvent or reimagine tropes associated with haunted house or supernatural ghost stories. Far from it. What Presence does do — in Soderbergh’s approach to formal experimentation within predetermined boundaries — it does far better and far more effectively than the vast majority of filmmakers currently writing and directing within the horror space could achieve within the same preset parameters. Working from a seemingly simple, straightforward script written by David Koepp, Soderbergh removes any...

Orson Welles' radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds caused some panic, but the extent of the disturbance has been exaggerated. The format of Welles' play was innovative and simulated a genuine radio broadcast, leading some listeners to believe it was real news. Despite the backlash, the controversy surrounding the broadcast actually boosted Welles' career and solidified his place in the entertainment industry.
The mere mention of Orson Welles tends to bring to mind the same incident for everyone, but the facts of the infamous radio broadcast don't completely align with the folklore. Although Welles did broadcast a radio adaptation of Hg Wells' sci-fi novel, The War of the Worlds, the stories regarding the panic it caused his listeners have been greatly exaggerated. However, there is an element of truth to the tale. Either way, there is still a rich history to the man behind every Orson Welles movie.

However, there is an element of truth to the tale. Either way, there is still a rich history to the man behind every Orson Welles movie.

The 1950s are considered the “Golden Age” of science fiction cinema, and that’s not just hyperbole. By many accounts, more than 200 sci-fi movies were released during that decade. And while the film industry had sporadically produced quality sci-fi in the years before—ranging from Aelita (1924) to Metropolis (1927), to The Invisible Man (1933)—it wasn’t until the 1950s that classic after classic began to arrive like riches from a long-lost hidden treasure.
And when we say classic, we mean films that essentially created the template for all science fiction movies that followed. Just look at this list. The first half of the decade brought us The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, and Them!, while the second half ushered in This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Blob, The Fly,...

Many new and returning cast members will bring The Witcher season 3 to life. Based on the books and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher TV series follows Geralt—a mutated monster hunter for hire—who fights to protect his adopted child, Ciri, from individuals who want her untapped supernatural powers. The Witcher season 1 followed the choppy narrative of the short stories while season 2 focused a lot more on the novels, especially Blood of Elves. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich shared with TechRadar that The Witcher season 3 explores the plot of the book The Time of Contempt.
Netflix set a split release date for The Witcher season 3 with five episodes on June 29, 2023, and three more episodes on July 27, 2023. Viewers will see a shift in cast and characters during The Witcher season 3 since the main trio is leaving Geralt's home Kaer Mohren. The magazine obtained FBI documents, including an alert issued around the time of the film’s April 7 release, warning that “Pipeline” could inspire terrorist attacks on energy targets. Rolling Stone called the flurry of agency messages “a veritable alphabet soup of angst,” and noted that oil and gas infrastructure has remained quietly operational in the United States in weeks past.

In 1938, Orson Welles terrified CBS Radio listeners with his adaptation of "The War of the Worlds." Despite clarifying before and during the broadcast that the radio drama was a work of pure fiction, Welles' play-by-play recount of a fictitious alien invasion famously caused a brief bout of mass hysteria. Many listeners had somehow believed that the invasion was real, even though the exact numbers of those who were swept up in it are unclear. Despite this, this radio drama is probably among the most infamous examples of the public believing that a work of pure fiction was real, even with the proper warnings indicating that it wasn't.
So, what exactly does Welles' doomed adaptation of "The War of the Worlds" and the recently-released "Something in the Dirt" have in common? According to directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead ("Synchronic," "Spring," "Moon Knight"), it's that ever-present idea that someone might not...

Following the critically acclaimed Marriage Story, writer-director Noah Baumbach has returned with White Noise, but it has been criticized for being a messy and tedious drama. The film becomes unbearable in its middle act, and its uneven plotting, genre-changing, and bad pacing hold it back from being great.
But tons of other movies have been pulled back by underwhelming middle acts, even great ones. Redditors have debated at length which great movies have the worst middle acts, and the opinions range from predictable to wildly unpopular. Between a three-hour superhero movie, a crime classic with a shocking twist, and a couple of Steven Spielberg-directed films, Reddit users think more time should have been spent hashing out the middle acts.

Some Red Dead Redemption 2 fans are imagining a Dlc expansion centered around aliens from the classic sci-fi novel War of the Worlds. Ever since it was released in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 has earned near-universal acclaim and record-breaking sales numbers, with many considering it to be one of the greatest video games ever made. Naturally, many fans are anxious for a new Red Dead Redemption title, though developer Rockstar Games is currently focusing its efforts on Grand Theft Auto 6.
Others would settle for the chance to continue the story of former Van der Linde gang member Arthur Morgan through a Dlc side story, and a petition for a RDR2 single-player Dlc expansion reached over 5,000 signatures last March. A hypothetical Red Dead Redemption 2 Dlc campaign wouldn’t even need to be bound to the somewhat realistic nature of the base game either, as the original Red Dead Redemption had a standalone expansion pack titled Undead Nightmare.

It’s one of the year’s most awaited discs: the recent restored and remastered The War of the Worlds ’53 in a glorious 4K Ultra HD edition. A second Blu-ray disc of When Worlds Collide ’51 is too good to be called a bonus extra: this edition looks better than anything seen since original Technicolor prints. In one show we endure scurvy invaders from The Red Planet; in the other a rogue Astral Body threatens Earth with obliteration, necessitating escape on a space ship. Don’t bother checking online for tickets, the flight is sold out. CineSavant has the lowdown for collectors: how good does the new release look?

In case you haven’t heard, Jordan Peele has a new movie out this weekend, which is exciting. And while we can be reasonably sure that a huge chunk of the plot and premise of Nope won’t be revealed until you are sitting in your cinema seat, we already know it has a sinister cloud and, at some point, a flying saucer. So it’s not too much of leap to guess that aliens are going to be invading Earth again. When it comes to movies though, that’s kind of their thing…
If you are the pernickety, ruin-everyone-else’s-fun kind of science fiction fan, most alien invasion storylines present a bit of a problem: If you can build spaceships capable of carrying a military force large enough to subdue a planet, and transporting that force the vast interstellar distances between habitable worlds, well, you probably don’t really need to invade anywhere.

Nothing short of astonishment swept across Hollywood over the June 3-5 weekend when Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick dropped a mere 29 percent from its Memorial Day launch thanks to spectacular word of mouth.
That’s the lowest decline in history for a movie opening to 100 million or more, and a slim decline for any movie, according to Comscore. Bill Maher on Friday returned to the subject of “ridiculous” censorship on Twitter and other social media platforms, calling for users to “develop a better bulls— detector” to protect themselves from lies and misinformation.
“This idea that we can clean up Twitter and protect you from fake news and disinformation, it’s so ridiculous,” the comic said during the “New Rules” segment of his HBO series “Real Time.” “It’s like fact-checking the graffiti on the bathroom wall of a dive bar. We called this number and we didn’t have a good time.”
The host began with a Mother’s Day salute, and then argued that social media companies shouldn’t have to pose as our parents online. “Let’s pause and take a moment to think about how your mother was always there for you, looking after you and keeping you safe — and then realize, That’s not Twitter’s job!

George Pal’s ill-fated ‘future docu’ followup to Destination Moon still stirs the imagination, rendering in vivid Technicolor the visionary images that amazed us in Chesley Bonestell’s paintings about space travel. We still love the movie even if we want to shove the script and whoever approved it out an airlock without a space helmet. It’s fun to pick it apart, but when Van Cleave’s trilling ‘spacey’ music plays we know we’re back in 1950s Sci-fi Nirvana, anticipating a techno-future of space marvels. [Imprint] gives the movie a classy Blu-ray showcase.
