“Nothing happens in a vacuum,” notes Dcs Ian St. Clair (David Morrissey) in one of several police press conferences which punctuate the return of gritty crime drama “Sherwood” to BritBox (November 14). “There is such a thing as a mood or a culture that is hard to see, hard to define. But it can grip a place.” On this occasion, it’s not the deep-seated divisions stemming from a 1980s miners’ strike that has the stranglehold, but a middle-aged matriarch hellbent on exacerbating a bitter turf war.
It’s a pivot which both justifies a second helping – most of its BAFTA-nominated predecessor’s loose ends appeared to have been tied up – and helps fill the void opened up by another naturalistic, nail-biting BBC saga. Of course, its first season already had plenty in common with Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley”; an instinctive grasp of its Northern England surroundings, for example, and...

Jodie Foster's career has been famously wild. As a child, she appeared in lightweight Disney films like "Napoleon and Samantha" and "Freaky Friday," while also taking the world by surprise playing an underage sex worker in Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver." Throughout the 1980s, she successfully continued acting as she grew, appearing in films like "Foxes," "The Hotel New Hampshire," and "The Accused," for which she won her first Academy Award. In 1991, Foster won her second Oscar for playing FBI cadet Clarice Starling in Jonathan Demme's bleak serial killer thriller "The Silence of the Lambs," one of the few films to win "The Big Five" Oscars. That same year, Foster made her directorial debut with the child-prodigy drama "Little Man Tate."
From then on, Foster was a Hollywood staple, leading multiple high-profile studio dramas like "Maverick," Robert Zemeckis' "Contact," and "Anna and the King." She also worked with...

Jonathan Frakes is a beloved and prolific director in the Star Trek franchise, having directed numerous episodes across multiple series and two of the best Star Trek: The Next Generation films. Frakes' directing style captures the essence of classic Star Trek, with episodes that provide important insights into the characters' lives and tackle relevant social issues. Frakes' familiarity with the franchise and his ability to create memorable moments, including ad-libbed scenes, solidify him as one of the best directors in the Star Trek universe.

More than two decades ago, "Chicken Run" clucked its way onto the movie scene and became a runaway hit. The stop-motion animation movie was clever and strange, and unlike any of its contemporaries at the time (CGI-heavy flick "Dinosaur" and wacky Disney one-off "The Emperor's New Groove" bookended it at the year's box office). "Chicken Run" was also a surprisingly rich text, a movie that included plenty of moments of parody and humor meant to appeal to adults as well as kids.
The first movie functioned as a riff on "The Great Escape," the 1963 war film starring Steve McQueen, but the new sequel film, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," chose a different parody path. In an interview with /Film, director Sam Fell confirmed that "Dawn of the Nugget" was influenced by heist films, so much so that it earned a pointed nickname during production. Exclusive: Thunderbirds are go, to Wow Presents Plus.
RuPaul’s Drag Race producer World of Wonder’s streaming service has snapped up rights to all 32 episodes of the iconic 1965 series, which will drop on the platform in the U.S. and Canada on Christmas Eve.
Created by Gerry Anderson, Thunderbirds originally debuted on ITV in 1965 and gained notoriety for its pioneering artform called “supermarionation.” The 32-episode series follows the Tracy family in the year 2026 as they run ‘International Rescue’ – a top-secret organization whose ongoing mission is to rescue people trapped in extraordinarily dangerous situations using their advanced Thunderbirds machines.
“Part of our mission with Wow Presents Plus is to bring viewers classics that deserve another look,” said World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.
“The artistry and humor of Thunderbirds is as fresh as the day it was made. Barbie is not the only doll who loves pink.

In George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi/fantasy film "Star Wars," the roguish smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford) claimed to have the fastest starship in the galaxy. Named the Millennium Falcon, the ship was said to have "made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs." Clearly, Lucas hadn't yet grasped that a parsec is a measure of distance (about 19 trillion miles) and not time.
When it comes to its design, the Millennium Falcon is more or less a flying saucer. It carries a radar dish on its dorsal region, two fork-like protrusions on its bow (called loading arms), and its cockpit rests protruding from its starboard side. Otherwise, it's flat and plate-shaped. Like many of the vehicles in "Star Wars," it is encrusted with textured plating and scads of ineffable machinery that only the most devoted Starwoids could accurately explain. It's a small ship, too, only able to house about a half dozen people comfortably.

The 2000s were a great time for science fiction. Thanks to The Matrix closing out the 90s, studios were more willing to give the green light to stories about science gone awry, leading to favorites such as A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Paprika, as well as superhero hits like Spider-Man 2, X2, and Iron Man.

Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, did not have a smooth ride. Its release was delayed several times due to first Disney buying the studio that made the film, 20th Century Fox, and then the Covid pandemic, and its cast turned out to be a Pandora’s Box of, at best, bad PR and at worst, criminal allegations.
Back in 2020 then, when Branagh was filming his autobiographically inspired family drama, Belfast, a third Hercule Poirot film wasn’t necessarily a given. Though Agatha Christie’s estate and Branagh were keen to make further sequels to 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, the next Christie movie had yet to be greenlit.
That uncertainty inspired Branagh to tuck a Poirot Easter Egg into Belfast as “an offering to the gods,” as he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They can tell us, in the end, if we’ll be allowed to make it.

Actor Jonathan Frakes' directorial debut on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was for the third season episode "The Offspring", the episode where Data (Brent Spiner) builds his own android daughter (Hallie Todd). One might note that Frakes' character, Commander Riker, didn't appear much in that episode. This kicked off a full-blown directorial career for Frakes that hasn't slowed since. Frakes directed eight episodes of "NextGen" in total, as well as the feature films "Star Trek: First Contact" (1996) and "Star Trek: Insurrection" (1998).
Frakes would go on to direct "Thunderbirds" and "Clockstoppers," and enter a prolific career helming episodes of high-profile TV shows like "Leverage," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Burn Notice," and "The Librarians." He also stayed within the Trek family over the years, directing episodes of "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," "Discovery," "Picard," and the notable crossover between "Strange New Worlds" and "Lower Decks." The best parody movies take the most outrageous aspects of movie genres and make them even more ridiculous, without mocking the genre itself. Great parody movies have a clever sense of humor and intelligent jokes that appeal to people's love for the genre they're spoofing. Nintendo in the mid-to-late 80s sure was something to behold. It’s probably the closest thing the video game industry had to a monopoly. Sure, the Sega Master System was around and Atari was still on life support, but the Nintendo Entertainment System was absolutely dominant in society. We didn’t even call it “the Nes.” It was just “Nintendo.” For many, “playing video games” was “playing Nintendo.”
Nintendo’s major market share led to some interesting marketing experiments. Captain N: The Game Master was an animated series that not only advertised different games as part of its lore, but even included third-party game heroes like Simon Belmont and Mega Man as supporting characters. Then there’s The Wizard: an attempt to promote the upcoming Super Mario Bros. 3 via a bizarre family film version of Rain Man that included the questionable choice of casting Christian Slater and doing nothing with him.

This week, the BBC announced the latest Blue Peter presenter – wheelchair racer Abby Cook – making her the 42nd presenter in the 65-year history of this wholesome children’s entertainment show.
Blue Peter is famous for being the longest-running children’s TV programme in the world, as well as for its iconic badge, and its notoriously disastrous time capsules.
But in amongst the strange craft projects, ‘fun’ facts and sometimes controversial competitions, Blue Peter had some real geek gems:
Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill Met a Tortoise and Ate Star Wars Stew (1980)
Through a 2023 lens, this seems like a fever dream, but against the odds it all actually happened. To celebrate the release of The Empire Strikes Back, the Blue Peter team treated us to an appearance from R2D2, a strangely silent C3P0, ‘hairy old Chewbacca’ and Darth Vader.

Jonathan Frakes has always seen "Star Trek" as an action/adventure franchise, as he once admitted during a behind-the-scenes interview for "Star Trek: First Contact," which he directed. As the man who played Cmdr. William Riker on seven seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," it makes logical sense that he would see things that way. Riker was a man of action, always in charge of away missions, and a jocular cowboy when in command. This persona would be played with to great effect decades later on "Star Trek: Lower Decks," wherein Riker was finally depicted working as a starship captain — a long-sought position — and laughing heartily as he plunged his crew into danger.
As an actor, Frakes began his career in the late 1970s, appearing on the soap opera "The Doctors." As a director, Frakes started working on episodes of NextGen during its third season, helming the episode "The Offspring.

Of all the actors to have appeared on "Star Trek," Jonathan Frakes might be the most prolific director. Throughout the franchise's history, at least since the days of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actors have often stepped into the director's chair, helming multiple episodes. Frakes, however, managed to find a whole second career in directing, and has, to date, directed 25 episodes of Trek across its various iterations. Frakes also directed 10 episodes of "The Librarians," 13 episodes of "Leverage," and dozens of episodes from other shows. Frakes also broke into making feature films with "Star Trek: First Contact," and "Star Trek: Insurrection," as well as the brightly colored kid adventure films "Clockstoppers" and "Thunderbirds."
Having worked on both film and television, Frakes may be uniquely qualified to comment on which medium is most appropriate for "Star Trek." It might be worth mentioning that "Star Trek" has always functioned better on the small screen than the large.

At this point, the most logical and best choice for Star Trek 4 director is Jonathan Frakes. Star Trek 4, the 14th film in the Star Trek movie franchise, is currently in limbo. Paramount scrapped its announced December 2023 release date after director Matt Shakman left the project to helm Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four. No new director has been announced for Star Trek 4, and the last time a Star Trek movie hit the big screen was Star Trek Beyond in 2016. Meanwhile, Jonathan Frakes has already expressed his interest to direct Star Trek 4, and producer J.J. Abrams should take Number One up on his offer.
Jonathan Frakes is Star Trek to the core. As Commander Will Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Frakes was part of the final cast handpicked by Star Trek's late creator Gene Roddenberry. Frakes reprised Riker in the Tng movies and in several other series like Star Trek: Enterprise...

Last week, we learned that a "Twister" sequel is in the works at Universal, and Amblin may have found a director. This week, the project continues to pick up speed, as we've caught wind of its release date: according to Variety, "Twisters" is set to touch down on July 19, 2024.
The sequel to the 1996 Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt-led disaster movie has been in the works for a while now, with Deadline breaking the news in October that "Twisters" has a script from "The Revenant" screenwriter Mark L. Smith that reportedly excited even Amblin head Steven Spielberg himself. Though the project's plot details are still under wraps, that outlet also reported that Hunt is being sought for a return, and the follow-up film may involve the daughter of her and Paxton's characters, meteorologist Jo and weatherman Bill.

Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell carry this idealistic, moving French version of Dh Lawrence’s transgressive novel
Here is a movie that could so easily collapse into self-satire, especially at the first sneery-knowing intonation of the word “milady”, a phrase probably now most associated with Parker from Thunderbirds. But the commitment and passion of its two lead performers, Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell, carries this new version of Dh Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and the actor turned director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre finds the keynote of idealism. The film is never shy of eroticism and full-on sex, if sometimes going for a slightly quaint soft-focus approach. But Clermont-Tonnerre is never in any doubt that this is a love story. The last adaptation of any note was from another French film-maker, Pascale Ferran’s flawed Lady Chatterley (based on an earlier version of the book). Perhaps it takes a...

There ought to be an obscure, multisyllabic German word for the very specific feeling of pride one can take in discovering cinema through one of the medium's more highly regarded classics. There are those among us who had something of a cinematic awakening while watching an indelible classic such as, say, "Citizen Kane," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Persona," "The Rules of the Game," or "The General." Conversely, there ought to be a similar term for the mixture of pride and embarrassment one feels when their cinematic awakening is instigated by something obscure or unknown. "2001" may be a great piece of cinema. But surely someone in the world fell in love with movies the first time they saw Tony Richardson's 1961 film "A Taste of Honey," or Russell Mulcahy's "Highlander 2: The Quickening."

Gerry and Sylvia Anderson are known as legends in the field of science fiction television series, and rightfully so. While they are probably most famous for their live action series Space: 1999 and the puppet series Thunderbirds, they have been responsible for a lot more titles. The British distributor Network is now releasing these older titles as lavish Blu-ray boxsets, and these are a sight to behold. If this paragraph so far feels familiar, I'm flattered, because it means you've read the article I wrote for Network's pimped Blu-ray release of Fireball XL5, back in April. In that article, I called that edition "magnificent". Well guess what? Their release of the aquatic science fiction puppet series Stingray is even better. Switching from black and white...

Filmed In Supermarionation Filmed In Supermarionation, Netflix, from Wednesday, August 10
For those who grew up watching Thunderbirds, Stingray or any of Gerry Anderson's puppet adventure shows, this documentary is a real treat. The title is a portmanteau word from "super" "marionette" and "animation" that Gerry created for their work. Featuring extensive interviews with those who knew him, including his wife and collaborator Sylvia - immortalised as the voice of Lady Penelope - Stephen La Rivière tackles Anderson's back catalogue chronologically, offering detail on his lesser known work as well as the big-hitters. Although Anderson died two years before this film was made, he has a strong voice within it, not just in the recollections of others but via a wealth of archive interviews. While anything could happen in the next half hour after you've watched it, chances are you'll find yourself trawling Youtube looking for some old favourites.

Canadian actor who was the voice of Scott Tracy in Thunderbirds and specialised in American roles for British film and TV productions
Shane Rimmer, who has died aged 89, was a doughty Canadian character actor who, in a career of more than 50 years, carved a productive niche playing American roles in British productions.
While his was a recognisable face – its sturdy jaw, piercing eyes and creviced brow lent themselves well to cool-under-pressure control room operators, no-nonsense cops and salty officials – it was his voice work that embedded him indelibly into popular culture. As Scott Tracy, trusty pilot of the flagship International Rescue vessel Thunderbird 1 in Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s enduringly popular puppet series Thunderbirds (1965-66), he bravely saved lives with calm stoicism.

CBS global distribution CEO Armando Nuñez Jr. went on the record with his career goals at a young age.
As a teenager in New York City in the early 1970s, Nuñez and his mother were out shopping one day when they were stopped by the New York Daily News’ Inquiring Photographer columnist. He asked Nuñez what he wanted to be when he grew up.
“I told him, ‘I want to be in international television sales, just like my dad,’ ” Nuñez recalls. “The guy looked at me like I had three heads. He had no idea what I was talking about.”

Tania Mallet, the actress who played Tilly Masterson in the 1964 James Bond movie “Goldfinger,” has died. She was 77.
“We are very sorry to hear that Tania Mallet who played Tilly Masterson in Goldfinger has passed away,” the official James Bond Twitter account posted late Sunday night. “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time.”
Mallet was first cousin to Oscar winner Helen Mirren, as her mother and “The Queen” actress’ father were siblings.

Born in Blackpool, England, Mallet was working as a model when she was cast as Masterson by producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli in “Goldfinger.” She had previously auditioned for the part of Tatiana Romanova in 1963’s “From Russia With Love” but was unsuccessful.
Playing the ill-fated love interest to Sean Connery in “Goldfinger” would be Mallet’s only major film role.

I love wordplay, and portmanteaus are my favourite. Come on over and I’ll tell you about The Manster (1959), part man, part monster, all good B movie madness. Two-headed Americans abroad in Japan is a very specific sub-genre, and underappreciated at that.
Originally released in Japan in July but not released stateside until March of ’62, United Artist Japan’s production was filmed there, and they spared every expense by using the same cardboard sets, flimsy, sparse labs and restaged hotel rooms as their American counterparts. (Papier mache volcano included.) But the mix of Japanese, British, and American actors gives The Manster (Aka The Split) a distinct flavor beyond the two pronged noggin. Oh, and the eyeball in the shoulder. Have I mentioned the caged sister with the melting face?

With Christmas 1970 on the horizon, the UK’s thrilling new sci-fi TV show UFO was well underway. Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's first live-action series, it was set in the future and revolved around the activities of the Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation (Shado), a covert agency presided over by Commander Ed Straker (Ed Bishop) to fend off alien attacks on mankind. As a wide-eyed 8-year-old I was hooked and I can recall wishing two things. One was that I could have one of the Dinky Toys’ missile-firing Shado Interceptors, which I thought then (and still think now) was the coolest among the incredible array of vehicles that appeared in the show; I’d not be nearly as forgiving today as I was back then that Dinky had manufactured it in garish green, where the ‘real’ ones on TV were white.
