- Yaqui Joe Herrera: How come they done give you a badge in the first place?
- Lyedecker: Well I guess I took a job nobody wanted. And even at that it took me a whole year to get it.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: I know all about them small town, barber shop, hair cuttin' sheriffs. I know all about them big town, big belly, billy club swingin' policemen from St. Louis.
- Lyedecker: You don't know nothin'!
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: The hell I don't! They look you up and down and you're guilty! You don't get no trial, just like we ain't gonna get one now.
- Lyedecker: Money isn't worth gettin' killed for, now is it?
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: I ain't got no money.
- Lyedecker: The bank says different.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Oh, I took it, all right. But, I spent it two days later.
- Lyedecker: What did you spend it on?
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Rifles.
- Lyedecker: Rifles?
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: 100 Rifles for the Yaqui Indians. Them poor devils hangin' on them telephone poles out there, thems Yaqui Indians. My people.
- Sarita: Señor, will you help us?
- Lyedecker: Hell no.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Why not? You ain't got nothin' better to do.
- Lyedecker: It ain't my party.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: You don't care about nothin' or nobody, just like all them big boys with the badges!
- Lyedecker: What do you know about badges? You just a pissy ant, border half-breed.
- Verdugo: Where is the money?
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Just like he said... Half of it I spent on whiskey and women, and the other half I wasted.
- Von Klemme: Why don't you try this hotel. He may be in there.
- Lyedecker: You mean, they let Indians in there?
- Von Klemme: Anyone who can pay, sir.
- Von Klemme: I'm Lieutenant Franz Von Klemme from the Imperial German Army. I'm what you call an advisor.
- Lyedecker: I'm Lyedecker, policeman.
- Girl in Hotel: Where'd you goin', Joe?
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Well, I'm on my way.
- Girl in Hotel: You say: all day, all night.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: All night, all day? Did I say that?
- Girl in Hotel: You say.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Well, things is different now.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: I ain't never been worth a damn in my whole damn life. I ain't never been worth *nothin'* to talk about. I never even had a job, permanent like. But, now I finally done somethin' for somebody. Me. I finally amounted to somethin'.
- Lyedecker: Yeah. You robbed a bank.
- Verdugo: How would two Indians find 100 rifles, huh? They were skinned alive. Slowly. But, they wouldn't say.
- Lyedecker: Stay outta other people business. That's what I always said and that's what I always done. But, look at me now. Smart Lyedecker. Hung up on a fence with a bunch of scruffy Indians.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: I think our string is done run out.
- Lyedecker: The hell it has. We're gonna get outta this.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Yeah?
- Lyedecker: Yeah.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: How?
- Lyedecker: Well, there's nothin' to it. Baby giant hand is gonna reach in here and pick us up and take us away and put us down someplace right in the middle of a whole bunch of women and whiskey.
- Lyedecker: Well, two or three times now, you could've killed me.
- Sarita: Si. That is true. I need you.
- Lyedecker: What for?
- Sarita: Mira. Those rifles. They are what keeps Joe here. He is what keeps you here. I want you to help us.
- Lyedecker: No, I won't do that.
- Sarita: Are you afraid?
- [flashes big smile]
- Lyedecker: Yeah. Yeah, I reckon I am. Oh, not of being shot at. That's happened plenty before.
- Sarita: Lyedecker. If... if you would join with us... for just a little while... I will not worry about Yaqui Joe. Afterwards, you can have him.
- Lyedecker: You ain't, uh... partial to him?
- Sarita: No. I don't trust him. He's a bad man. But... he's smart, and he's important for us now.
- Lyedecker: [softly] Nothing else?
- Sarita: *No.* Nothing.
- Lyedecker: No deals. I'm gonna take him back, and there ain't gonna be no deals.
- Sarita: Yaqui. The children... They've taken all of the children... and holding them for the rifles.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: They're holdin' 'em for us too, you can bet.
- Sarita: [tears glinting in her eyes] Well, we have to go back.
- Yaqui Joe Herrera: Look, Sarita... I think we ought to go on to Romero... Give 'em the guns and get some more men, huh?
- Sarita: [eyes brimming with tears, shakes her head:] No. We have to get those children.
- [nods resolutely]
- Lyedecker: We will.
