Three Clint Eastwood favourites – led by Dirty Harry – are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, and are up for order.
Fans of Clint Eastwood classics, and the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format, have a triple treat in store, as Warner Bros prepares to release there of Eastwood’s movies on the format.
Thus far, it’s just the Steelbook versions that have gone up for order, and there are plenty of details yet to fill in. But there’s a sporting chance these initial releases will sell fast, hence this post.
Dirty Harry was first rumoured for 4K disc last year, and it’s definitely on its way in 2025. There aren’t at the moment known plans for the four follow-ons as well – although it’d be terrific to see Sudden Impact in 4K – but you can find Dirty Harry up for order here.

Clint Eastwood's Best Picture-winning Western is getting a new streaming home. Since the 1960s, the American icon has been widely associated with the Western genre. He rose to fame for his roles as the ramrod Rowdy Yates in the Western television series Rawhide and the bounty hunter, the Man with No Name, in director Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy of spaghetti Westerns, which includes A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Eastwood capped off the 1960s with the Westerns Hang 'Em High, which was his first starring role in an American movie, and the musical Paint Your Wagon. During the 1970s, Eastwood starred in Two Mules for Sister Sara and Joe Kidd before he began directing his own Westerns in addition to starring, starting with High Plains Drifter and followed by The Outlaw Josey Wales and Pale Rider. As Hollywood adjusted to the whims and desires of Baby Boomer moviegoers heading into the 1970s, studios found themselves making fewer and fewer Westerns. Long one of the most reliably profitable genres, younger viewers who'd come of age rebelling against much of what their parents held dear were turned off by this continued mythologizing of how America pursued its manifest destiny. They rejected John Wayne, but turned out for Italian-produced Spaghetti Westerns, especially those starring Clint Eastwood. As a result, the only semi-traditional Hollywood Westerns Boomers would embrace tended to feature Eastwood in the starring role (e.g. "High Plains Drifter" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales").
One notable exception to the Eastwood rule was Michael Crichton's sci-fi/Western blend "Westworld." The 1973 film stars Richard Benjamin and James Brolin as a pair of buddies who take a vacation to an adult amusement park called Delos to live out their dreams...

Clint Eastwood owes his career to Westerns. He became a familiar face to American television viewers between 1959 and 1965 as the ramrod Rowdy Yates in the popular CBS series "Rawhide" before venturing off to Spain, where, with Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone, he helped turn the genre on its ear with the Spaghetti Western trilogy of "A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More," and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." From that point forward, Eastwood in any kind of Western was a big deal at the box office, which was especially impressive considering that oaters were declining in popularity throughout the 1960s and into the '70s.
Ultimately, even Eastwood couldn't keep the genre afloat. After an impressive run that included "Hang 'Em High," "Two Mules for Sister Sara," "High Plains Drifter," and "The Outlaw Josey Wales," the star only made one proper Western in the 1980s ("Pale Rider...

Clint Eastwood may first have been known as an actor, due in part to his starring roles in Westerns, including the iconic Dollars trilogy, but he's now just as well known for his directing. Eastwood's first directing gig was Play Misty for Me in 1971, and he followed that film up with others like High Plains Drifter (1973), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), Heartbreak Ridge (1986), and, of course, Unforgiven (1992).
Eastwood continued to appear in films throughout the 2000s, but the 2010s saw his career shift to one more focused on directing. He gave audiences films like American Sniper (2014), Sully (2016), and Richard Jewell (2019), while also doing double duty as star and director in The Mule (2018) and Cry Macho (2021). At 94 years old, most in Hollywood would be long retired, but Eastwood put out yet another film this year, and it's been a success with critics and audiences.

While there are mixed feelings surrounding the digital release of what could be Clint Eastwood‘s final film, Juror #2, Warner Classics is rubbing ointment on the wound with a Clint Eastwood Marathon featuring several of the legendary filmmaker’s classic films. Head over to the Warner Classics YouTube channel. You’ll find movies like Unforgiven, Where Eagles Dare, the Dirty Harry series, Flags of Our Fathers, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Kelly’s Heroes, and more streaming on the dominant video share platform.
The Clint Eastwood Marathon began on December 3 but still brings viewers essential picks from Eastwood’s catalog with quality picture and sound. Well, it’s as good as YouTube or your monitor can muster. Still, I’m watching the stream on my second screen right now, and it’s good enough for me. For film fans, the next best thing to actually watching movies is talking about movies. There's not much in this life that's better than having a great conversation about the films that move us, exasperate us, confuse us, and change us. This is probably why we love when celebrities get asked about their own favorite movies, whether they're listing their Letterboxd top four or gushing about their five favorites to Rotten Tomatoes. It's simple: we learn more about people, and love them more, when we get to see them light up talking about the movies they love. Esteemed actor Morgan Freeman has shared his five favorite films with Rotten Tomatoes twice now, and his choices are wide-ranging and unexpected.
The first time the Oscar-winning star of such films as "Million Dollar Baby," "The Dark Knight," and "Driving Miss Daisy" was asked about his all-time favorite movies, in 2011, he dropped a...

$3.8 billion. That’s the amount of money Clint Eastwood’s films have grossed at the North American box office throughout his career. A superstar since the 1960s, Eastwood is rare in that almost all of his biggest blockbusters, including all the Dirty Harry movies, were all made for Warner Bros. It’s been his home studio since about the time he made The Outlaw Josey Wales. He’s made everything from Oscar-winners to action movies, to movies where he’s chilling with his pal Clyde the Orangutan for them, and they almost always ended up at least breaking even. Sure, he’s had a few flops, but even in his golden years, he still cranked out smash hits for them, with American Sniper making over half a billion dollars, while The Mule and Sully both made over $100 million domestically. Even when his movies didn’t do well, Eastwood keeps his...

Two of the best Clint Eastwood movies are so memorable in their own right that viewers may have missed that they both tell the same story but in reverse. While Eastwood is best known for appearing in Western movies, he has occasionally branched out into other genres. As an actor and director, Eastwood usually chooses to tell simple stories about complex characters, like Million Dollar Baby's reluctant boxing coach, Frankie Dunn. Eastwood's greatest Western characters tend to be antiheroes, and while Eastwood is instantly recognizable for delivering lines through gritted teeth, his characters are all distinct in subtle ways.
Eastwood ensures that each of his characters has a feature or characteristic that sets them apart, like The Man With No Name's smoking habit and quiet demeanor. Even when his characters are inspired by real people, like Josey Wales, Eastwood ensures that his portrayal is both nuanced and interesting to watch onscreen.

Clint Eastwood might've appeared in 14 films after "Unforgiven" but his Oscar-winning directorial effort really does feel like a fond farewell to the genre that defined his career in front of the camera. For many, his stint as Will Munny, a worn down gunman making one last stand, sits as one of his finest and he could've hung up his acting hat for good there and then in one of the best Western movies of all time. For his co-star, Morgan Freeman, though, there's an earlier role rooted in Eastwood's time in the Old West that outshines even that.
Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes in 2023, the five-time Oscar nominee (one of which he won for his performance in Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby"), was asked about his favorite films. Of his five truly fascinating choices, one of them was Eastwood's own cold-blooded 1976 cowboy movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales." The film saw Easwood play the titular character,...

The comic book version of "The Boys" ran for 72 issues, but as issue numbering can often be, this is misleading. Writer Garth Ennis also penned three six-issue "The Boys" mini-series that are essential parts of the story: "Herogasm," "Highland Laddie," and "Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker." Counting these and the 2020 epilogue mini-series "Dear Becky," "The Boys" is really 98 issues.
When "The Boys" was collected as trade paperbacks, these miniseries were included as if they were part of the series' main run.
"Herogasm" is a business as usual arc of the Boys infiltrating a Supe orgy. ("Herogasm" later became one of the best episodes of the "Boys" TV series.) "Highland Laddie," meanwhile, is about Hughie taking a break from Supe-hunting and going back to Scotland, whereas "Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker" finally fills in the backstory of antihero Billy Butcher.
Called back to England for his abusive father's funeral, Butcher remembers his life story.

Clint Eastwood's most famous Western movie character is the antihero known as "The Man With No Name," but his breakout role was very different. Eastwood had played small roles in movies and TV shows since 1955, but he found success in a classic old Western TV show. Rawhide portrayed the lives and struggles faced by cattle drovers in the 1860s, and Eastwood appeared in each of its 217 episodes. After Rawhide ended, Eastwood traveled to Europe to play a lead role in a Western movie, which led to a drastic change in his acting career.
Eastwood played The Man With No Name in the Western movie A Fistful of Dollars, which was a critical success with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and is one of the movies that defined Eastwood's career. The so-called "Dollars Trilogy" all feature The Man With No Name and are considered among Eastwood's best movies, redefining the characters he usually plays.

There are two ways of looking at Clint Eastwood's 1980s. One is to view them as an enshrinement. Eastwood turned 50 at the outset of the decade, and the movies were either mainstream-skewing victory laps or thoughtful departures; the star wasn't above coasting, but he made sure to carve out some time for personal projects about subjects that fascinated him (e.g. the country music drama "Honkytonk Man" and the Charlie Parker biopic "Bird"). Basically, Eastwood could do whatever he wanted at his home studio at Warner Bros., and sometimes he wanted to make "Pink Cadillac."
You can also view Eastwood's '80s as a waste of his time and talent. Of the 11 films he made over that 10-year span, only one was great ("Tightrope"), a few were above-average, and the rest were either misfires or outright garbage. Some argue that he needed the behind-the-camera reps to make his '90s and '00s triumphs,...

While plenty of movies from the 1970s have since built up cult followings, that does not mean they have not aged poorly in the subsequent decades. Whether due to outdated social and political content, poor special effects, or even outrageous concepts that dont hold up in todays modern cinema landscape, its interesting to notice how much time can ravage an audiences perspective on a particular film. While these movies may have aged poorly, that does not necessarily make them bad, and it's important to view them as products of the era in which they were made.
Some of the best films from the 1970s have their fair share of issues regarding being outdated, and this was especially the case for cult classics that already stood outside of normal cinematic expectations. From silly premises like an offbeat comedy casting Clint Eastwood opposite an ape to sci-fi classics whose special effects just didnt hold up,...

Jeremiah Johnson is a 1972 Western film about a lone man's fight for survival in the Rocky Mountains, focusing on revenge, solitude, and man's battle against nature and himself. Robert Redford's portrayal of a former soldier turned mountain man as one of the greatest Western characters of all time epitomizes these themes. Westerns like Jeremiah Johnson often feature vast, untamed landscapes, revenge-driven plots, and introspective characters whose struggles are as internal as they are external. The wilderness becomes a character in its own right, shaping the entire narrative and adding an emotional component to the protagonist's journey.

Although Apartment 7A walks through an original storyline, it marks the return of many familiar characters from Rosemary's Baby. Based on Ira Levin's book of the same name, Rosemary's Baby is an iconic film that has influenced generations of horror movies. Despite premiering nearly 50 years ago, the film stands the test of time and is as scary and unsettling as it was back in the day. While masterfully unfolding a thoughtful metaphor for gaslighting and paranoia in a marriage, the film also invites viewers to fill in the blanks with their interpretations of shrouded character fates.

The best Clint Eastwood movies showcase why he is considered one of the most prolific and successful actors in film history. Now a 93-year-old filmmaker, Eastwood has been focusing on directing and is renowned for the speed at which he's developing new movies at this stage of his life. While Clint Eastwood has directed some great films dating back to the 1970s, he's best known for his acting roles, rising to fame in the 1960s as a charismatic, tough leading man in movies like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and later the Dirty Harry series.
Eastwood's acting is recognized for being synonymous with the Western genre, or more specifically, the Spaghetti Western and revisionist Western subgenres. Sergio Leone's Man with No Name trilogy is iconic, and Eastwood continued to develop the genre with films like The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven, which he directed and starred in.

It is borderline impossible to define the six-decade-long artistic legacy that Clint Eastwood had painstakingly mapped, as his stacked filmography includes everything from certified classics to overlooked gems. Of course, no artist can have an impeccably perfect run, but some, like Eastwood, inch very close to that ideal by re-defining entire genres that will always have a place in cinematic history. Not every good film that Eastwood helmed or starred in made a ton of money at the box office, but artistic success cannot be solely measured via such narrow metrics, as his name is embedded into the public consciousness, for better or worse.
It is tempting to dissect Eastwood's artistry purely through the Western genre — works like "A Fistful of Dollars" or "The Outlaw Josey Wales" capture his contributions succinctly — but there is much more to him than a drawling accent or laidback gunslinging. The actor has often been...

Pale Rider is a homage to 1953's Shane, with major similarities in both characters and story beats. Clint Eastwood's Preacher is a supernatural character, with hints about his ghostly nature sprinkled into the story. Pale Rider is not the only movie to riff on Shane, with various films like Logan borrowing its narrative elements.
Clint Eastwood's underrated Pale Rider took a classic Western from the 1950s and gave it a decidedly supernatural edge. Clint Eastwood's Westerns are some of the most defining of the genre, and he was one of the last major stars to make his name on "Oaters." The failure of Heaven's Gate in 1980 killed Westerns for much of the decade, with studios largely shunning them. There were exceptions, like Young Guns, but they were largely seen by producers as box office poison.
For Eastwood's part, he mostly stepped away from Westerns following 1976's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

There were exceptions, like Young Guns, but they were largely seen by producers as box office poison.
For Eastwood's part, he mostly stepped away from Westerns following 1976's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Western sequels, like The Lost City of Gold, can expand upon the original with epic narratives and iconic stars. Films like Return of the Seven may not bring back all original cast members but still capture the magic of the original. Classics like Trinity Is Still My Name prove that Western sequels can balance comedy and action for a successful franchise.
Although there have been countless great Western movies over the years, this was not a genre well-known for boasting a lot of fantastic sequels. Whether it's because the nature of cowboys, gunslingers, and outlaws usually led to an early grave or because some of the best Westerns were based on fact, its rare to find a truly must-watch Western sequel. However, there were a select few Western sequels that lovers of the genre absolutely must check out that lived up to or even improved upon the original movie or source material.

Clint Eastwood's "Two Mules for Sister Sara" is a lesser-known, humorous Western. The film features Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine as a comedic duo in a story filled with zingers and quips. Although not a major hit, "Two Mules for Sister Sara" marked a turning point in Eastwood's career, showcasing his versatility and willingness to share screen time.
One of Clint Eastwood's least talked about Westerns is also his funniest outing in the genre. Eastwood spent years on Western series Rawhide, before accidentally becoming a screen icon when he signed on for a low-budget Italian film called A Fistful of Dollars. This 1964 movie redefined the genre, and set the template for the Spaghetti Westerns that followed. Eastwood exited Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy as an exciting new leading man, and became one of the last movie stars to make his name with Westerns.

Pale Rider is Clint Eastwood's only foray into playing a supernatural character in a Western setting, adding a unique twist to his filmography. The movie draws inspiration from classic Westerns like Shane, while also incorporating a subtle supernatural edge to the story of a mysterious preacher. Despite being a departure from Eastwood's typical roles, Pale Rider remains one of his best-received films, blending elements of horror and Western genres.

There are plenty of great Clint Eastwood movie moments in "Escape from Alcatraz," but it's not just the veteran star that made this a legendary prison break thriller. Directed by Don Siegel, the film was an adaptation of J. Campbell Bruce's 1963 non-fiction book of the same name, which chronicled the real-life June 1962 Alcatraz escape attempt. "Escape" also marked the fifth and final collaboration between the Siegel and Eastwood, and it's a fitting end to their fruitful working relationship. Still regarded as one of the finest films of the 1970s, "Escape" was met with widespread critical acclaim upon its 1979 release and its reputation hasn't faltered since.

I think about an anecdote that Clint Eastwood once told regarding Chief Dan George. Clint campaigned for an Oscar nomination for George’s excellent performance in “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” A common reply from voters was, “Well, he wasn’t acting. He was just being himself.”
In late October 2019, Sterlin Harjo first mentioned “Reservation Dogs” to me. Sterlin told me that he and Taika Waititi were developing a TV show for FX — and if a miracle happened (God willin’ and the creek don’t rise) and the show got made, he wanted me to be a part of it. Well, that miracle — or more accurately, a series of miracles — happened. With the help of Angelique Midthunder, Sterlin and Taika cast four young Native actors to play the Rez Dogs, four more to play their rivals (The Bad Guy Gang) and dozens more Native actors to populate their fictional community. Western dramas have been all the rage lately, but there was a time when the genre was falling behind. That is, until Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven was released. The film takes place in Big Whiskey, Wyoming, and follows the story of William Munny, a former outlaw. The film was quite well received by both fans and critics and is still considered one of the best movies of Clint Eastwood’s career.

Clint Eastwood, the actor-turned-director and producer, has had one of the longest and most varied careers of anyone working in the entertainment world. In addition to his film work he has also amassed an impressive resume as a musician and composer and even served as the mayor of the California town Carmel-by-the-Sea during the 1980s.
Eastwood began his film career in westerns and later also found success in crime dramas. He was mostly known for his striking good looks and stoic demeanor though and was not really considered a serious or talented actor. He would slowly work to change that fact and would eventually receive two Oscar nominations for his acting, both as Best Actor for “Unforgiven” in 1992 and “Million Dollar Baby” in 2004. While he didn’t win either of those acting awards, he would win two Oscars for each of those films as Best Director and as a producer...

Directors like Clint Eastwood, the Coen Brothers, and Anthony Mann have made their mark on Westerns, each bringing their unique vision and storytelling to the genre.
While Western movies have been around for almost as long as Hollywood itself, the genre wouldn’t be the same without a few great directors. Every cinematic genre is shaped by its most memorable voices. Sci-fi cinema would be completely different without Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, and George Lucas just like the horror genre wouldn’t be what it is today without revolutionaries like John Carpenter, Dario Argento, and Wes Craven. However, there might be no other genre as reliant on iconography as the Western. Thus, the history of the Western is marked by legendary images whose work came to define the genre.

Westerns used to be one of the most popular genres in Hollywood, but around the start of the '60s, their popularity began to decline rapidly. George Lucas came up with the germ of the idea that would become Indiana Jones before he made "Star Wars." Much like the sci-fi/fantasy epic that would soon take over the world, Indiana Jones as a character was inspired by Lucas' love of serials. The creative, however, was struggling to nail down his action-adventure icon, so he turned to a filmmaker pal named Philip Kaufman, a writer and director you'll know from his work in 1978's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "The Right Stuff."
It was Kaufman who took the first stab at figuring out what this adventure movie could be, and is credited with bringing in the idea of making the Ark of the Covenant the MacGuffin of the movie. But Kaufman's involvement with what would become "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was truncated due to a commitment he had for another job, this time as writer...

Unforgiven is one of Clint Eastwood's defining movies, but it was almost produced during the '80s with a very different actor in the role. Unforgiven is one of only three Westerns in the history of the Academy Awards to win Best Picture, alongside 1931's Cimarron and Dances With Wolves. It also marked Eastwood's final true Western, with the film offering a subversion of his iconic roles like the Man with No Name or The Outlaw Josey Wales. The film was instead of a demystified look at the Old West and its gunslingers.
Eastwood famously sat on Unforgiven's screenplay for many years and wanted to play the main character Will Munny when he was older. It's hard to picture anybody else in the role now, as Eastwood's history in the "Oater" genre is what gives the film some of its power. For instance, the scene where Munny is...

When your students are tanking their classes (if they attend at all) and dumping Fizzies tablets onto the varsity swim meet, you can't be a soft school administrator. That said, Dean Wormer would run Faber College more like Rikers if he had the opportunity. The gruff villain (played by John Vernon) is just one of the highlights of "National Lampoon's Animal House," John Landis' 1978 frat comedy, as the biggest authority standing in the way of Delta House's good time. The movie was penned by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, and Chris Miller, pulling from their respective experiences in higher education. It was "National Lampoon Magazine" editor-in-chief and writer Kenney who came up with the Dean years before the movie, as the satirical "National Lampoon's High School Yearbook" featured Wormer as a civics teacher and coach. On the big screen, Wormer doesn't suffer fools or twerps, and he's as rigid about...
