The day after Jane and Sydney's attempt on Richard's life, Jane files a missing persons report on him. But she becomes nervous when the not-really-dead Richard begins to harass her. Meanwhile, Jake and Alison decide to become a couple, but they must hide the news from Billy. Amanda travels to Kansas City to talk to Mrs. Davis, the mother of Peter's long-dead first wife, to find information about him. In Boston, a shady woman named Taylor McBride, the wife of restaurant chef Kyle McBride and someone from Peter's past, flies to Los Angeles after reading about Peter's legal trouble and for some unknown reason, decides to relocate to Melrose in Jo's vacant apartment by charming the bemused Matt into renting out the apartment. Also, Michael maintains a bedside vigil at the hospital for a comatose Kimberly hoping she will wake up and give the police an alibi for Peter.

Jane and Sydney continue to be harassed by Richard, who eventually confronts them at his burial site. Meanwhile, Alison and Jake continue to keep their affair a secret from Billy while she decides to move into her own apartment away from Melrose. Kyle McBride arrives in Los Angeles and reluctantly approves Taylor's decision to move into Melrose to expand their restaurant chain. Amanda tries to force Kimberly to remember when she kept Peter locked up, while a drug addicted Matt steals a prescription for more pep pills from Michael.

Jane and Sydney's confrontation with Richard comes to a shocking end when Richard is killed by a policeman before he can kill them. At Peter's pre-trial hearing, Taylor is in attendance when Peter takes the witness stand after Kimberly's testimony falters, but she regains her memory at the last moment and Peter is freed. Meanwhile, Billy organizes a surprise going-away party for Alison, but gets a bigger surprise when he learns of her and Jake. Also, Michael is asked about Matt's drug use, and Samantha's not sure if she wants to live at Melrose.

Despite of his feelings for Alison, Billy asks Samantha out on a date and later blabs about Alison and Jake's romantic involvement in front of everyone. Peter fires Sydney after she sells his house to make amends meet for Peter's legal defense, and she immediately gets another job at Jane's boutique store. Meanwhile, Kimberly turns in her medical license when the hospital board has in inquiry about her. Taylor continues to be obsessed with Peter, and asks Amanda to help her and Kyle in a advertising place for their restaurant. Amanda, being paranoid and suspicious as always, takes an instant dislike to Taylor, despite her casual attitude and attempts to be friendly for Amanda correctly suspects that Taylor is up to something. Also, Matt continues his drug use and threatens Michael who threatens to turn him in after finding out of his painkiller addiction.

After Jane inadvertently torches Alison's new apartment, she slowly goes crazy and begins to stalk and harass both Alison and Jake. Meanwhile, Amanda is in Santa Barbara on her honeymoon with Peter, while Taylor continues to peruse him. At D&D, Arthur Field, the ruthless chairman of the board, hires his equally ruthless son, Craig, as a junior associate and puts Billy in charge of showing him around. Michael becomes frustrated after Kimberly won't return his sexual advances. Sydney meets Kyle for the first time and then some. Also, Matt is committed to a rehab center and meets the owner Dr. Dan Hathaway, a former drug addict himself.

Alison and Jake debate the issue of whether Billy or Jane is behind their resent mishaps. Meanwhile, Billy takes Samantha on a picnic trip where she learns about his past from Jane. Amanda tries to stay ahead of Craig at D&D after his father positions him to get close to her to strike, and Billy learns of their plan to take over D&D all for themselves. Michael wrestles with the temptation of his new beach front neighbor, Megan Lewis. Matt tries to leave rehab, but realizes that he has been suspended from medical school for his drug use. Also, Sydney tries to sell one of Samantha's paintings to Kyle for the grand opening of his and Taylor's new restaurant.

Amanda struggles to maintain control of D&D and her marriage to Peter when he moves out of her apartment and in with Michael and Kimberly after a heated argument. Meanwhile, Jane continues to stalk Jake and Alison, and he gets frustrated at not being able to do anything when Jane goes to the police first and charges HIM with harassment. Matt tells Dan that he wants to leave rehab because he has feelings for him. Billy and Samantha try to move forward with their relationship. Michael continues to lust after Megan who refuses to tell him about herself. Also, Samantha sets a lonely Sydney up on a blind date with a friend who turns out to be a sex-addict.

While Amanda is out of town on business, Taylor confronts Peter and reveals that she happens to be Victoria (formerly Vicki) Taylor Davis, the younger sister of his long-dead first wife and she has had strong feelings for him all along which explains why Taylor settled in Los Angeles. But Peter does not want to say anything to Amanda because he knows that she will naturally get jealous and paranoid to this turn of events. Michael wants to know more about Megan and when she refuses to tell him, he investigates and discovers her to be a prostitute. Kimberly becomes depressed after her doctor tells her that she has three months to live for she has an inoperable brain tumor. Meanwhile, Jake confronts Jane to leave him and Alison alone in which she breaks down and reveals her true disturbed roots. Sydney takes a liking to Kyle who tries to keep distant to her. Also, Craig dumps work on Billy while he goes out on a date with Samantha.

Michael campaigns to become the new chief of staff at Wilshire Hospital, as does Peter, and as does Dr. Irene Shulman, the overachieving chief resident. Meanwhile, Kimberly meets with Megan thus revealing that Kimberly hired Megan to seduce Michael to get him sexually active again. Kimberly orders Megan to end the charade with Michael. But Michael refuses back away from Megan. After Amanda saves Craig from botching an account, he reluctantly agrees to tell her about his father's plans to oust her from D&D. Alison sees an opportunity to come back to D&D temporarily when Amanda asks her help to keep a major account. Dan exercises emotional caution in his burgeoning relationship with Matt after their first date. Craig continues to pursue Samantha, much to Billy's wariness, while Sydney does the same with Kyle, and Taylor continues the same with Peter who continues to lie to Amanda about what he knows about Taylor.

Jane goes to Chicago to visit her parents and later gets a big surprise when she accidentally discovers that she has been adopted. Back in Los Angeles, Craig flexes his new muscle at D&D after learning that he was willed the majority of D&D's stock. Meanwhile, Kimberly tells Megan her secret that she's dying from a brain tumor and sets a plan for Michael's future which she asks him for a quick divorce. Peter returns to work, but has a hard day in surgery when he loses a patient. Taylor ignores Kyle's warning to stay away from Peter and as a result, he moves closer to Sydney. Samantha gives Craig one of her new paintings to hang in his new office at D&D. Alison ponders Jake's business proposal to her to give her part-ownership of Shooters. Also, Dan asks Matt to a formal hospital fund-raiser.

Sydney's romance with Kyle eludes her when he tells her that their tryst in the restaurant was a one-time thing and that's it, and Sydney suffers further unhappiness when she learns Jane's news who then decides to track down her real biological mother. Megan expresses doubts to Kimberly about Michael's true feelings for her. Meanwhile, Billy gives love-life advice to Alison, who then decides to accept Jake's business offer. On another diner date, Matt meets one of Dan's former patients (and lovers) who cautions him about Dan's handling of relationships. Amanda, under orders from Arthur Field, takes Craig out for dinner to find out more about his plans for D&D, while Craig presents Samantha with her new loft for her to live in and paint. Also, Peter becomes more and more depressed about his life after he freezes during an operation.

Jane finally meets her biological mother, Sherri Doucette, a mysterious ex-actress who's not what she appears to be. Craig threatens to reveal some long-kept secret about his father if he won't stop harassing him at work. Meanwhile, Michael is hesitant about moving ahead with his future with Megan. Dan asks Matt to move in with him at his house after Michael moves into Matt's apartment. Peter considers dumping medicine for golf and later loses a bet with Kyle on the golf course. Afterward, Peter joins Taylor at a church for a memorial service to her sister. Kyle hires Sydney full time at a hostess at the restaurant which angers a jealous Taylor, and Billy tries to find out what Craig's plans are for Samantha.

Amanda persuades Peter to start seeing a therapist when he starts acting insanely jealous and manic-mannered, especially when he creates an ugly scene at a business dinner with Craig. Meanwhile, Jane persuades Sherri to spend the Christmas holiday with her, where she tells Jane more about her past. Samantha goes to an art gallery auction to try to recover one of her paintings that Sydney sold to Kyle and pocketed the money, and Billy tries to get another painting away from Craig that he keeps in his office. Sydney meets a reclusive millionaire, named Carter Galivan, whom she hopes he will buy the painting she is trying to sell. Kimberly tells Megan of a plan to kill herself to end all of Michael's fiscal problems. Jake sweeps away Alison's holiday blues with a vacation to Park City, Utah, which turns less than cheerful. Also, Matt starts seeing Dan's possessive side when he showers him with assorted gifts.

Kyle unsuccessfully tries to get Peter and Amanda back together during his birthday party at his restaurant. Peter continues to sulk about his sagging medical career which drives a further riff between him and Amdanda. But later, Peter gets an emotional boost when he saves the life of an elderly woman from choking at a traffic accident. Meanwhile, Sydney visits Carter Galivan at his house again during a formal fund raiser where he gives her a new sports car that was given to him as a gift. Tensions arise between Jane and Sherri, in which Jane learns from Sherri's neighbor, Ed, about Sherri's alcoholism and depression. Billy tries to help Samantha to visit her home town and an impassioned affair finally begins between them. Dan and Matt make amends meet, but only temporarily due to Dan's possessiveness and unpredictable behavior. Also, Michael hesitates to sign the papers finalizing his divorce from Kimberly.

A rejuvenated Peter tries to reconcile with Amanda, who proves more difficult than he thought, while Dan tries to do the same for Matt. But Dan's further possessiveness results him injuring Matt again. After Jane's boutique shop is burglarized, she turns into a recluse which makes Sherri wonder if she has failed as a mother. Then a surprise visit from Jane's parents makes her realize that she wants to get a new start on life and she decides to move back to Chicago with them, and Sherri decides to start a relationship with Ed. Amanda learns from a drunken Craig his long-kept secret about his father and using it to come into power at D&D. Sydney is asked by Carter's bodyguard, Walter, to hang out with Carter at his house, but she resents it when business meetings interfere. Megan, under orders from Kimberly, takes Michael to Las Vegas for a wild weekend of fun and gambling where she persuades him to marry her.

Michael runs to Kimberly's side after learning of her health condition, but she runs away. Meanwhile, Amanda plays her hand with Craig and his father and during a hostile confrontation, Field suffers a fatal heart attack. Sydney moves in with Samantha and takes over Jane's boutique shop after she moves away and learns that it's in financial straits. Sydney then goes to Kyle for a loan, but help comes from another mysterious source: Carter. Peter takes action after he learns about Dan's abusive nature which leads to a confrontation with Matt about his problems. Also, Jake is excited with Alison's news that she's pregnant, but she's dubious about the direction of this turn of events.

When Samantha is threatened with eviction from Melrose, Billy suggests legal help, but regrets it when the lawyer, Kenny, turns out to be an old boyfriend of hers. Meanwhile, Taylor takes a dim view toward Kyle's short-tempered, former army service buddy, Nick, who shows up out the blue and asks to stay at their place. Amanda visits Peter's new home and makes a move to reconcile. Carter takes Sydney on a private getaway to a ranch near San Francisco to show her where he grew up, and she tries to break down his creative block. But later, Sydney learns the true reason why Walter has been insisting to her to spend time with Carter. Jake proposes marriage to Alison and they begin talk of moving to another place. When Michael is injured in a car crash in attempting to stop Kimberly from killing herself, he has a bizarre near-death experience in the hospital involving an angel Megan urging him to come with her to Heaven, while a demon Kimberly urges him to come with her to Hell, while the two women wait... hoping that he will recover.

In this two-hour episode, Kyle and Nick have a boys night out that ends in jail for both of them when they get into a barroom brawl at Shooters. Meanwhile, Taylor supplies Peter with valuable news about the hospital's new chief of staff's intimate involvement with his employer, Dr. Ilene Shulman, which enables Peter to seize the title for himself. Amanda uses Craig's lust after her to her own advantage to have him sign some papers so she can finally take control of his half of D&D. Alison and Jake set a date for their marriage, but at the last moment, she leaves him standing on the alter. Samantha moves in with Billy after she can no longer stand cohabitation with the abrasive and nihilistic Sydney, and Alison soon follows suit with Jake. Megan becomes unhappy when the bed-ridden Kimberly coaxes a promise out of Michael to be with her through her last weeks, and to refrain from having sex with Megan until after Kimberly dies. Sydney tries to get Carter to talk to her after Walter forbids her from seeing him again. After Craig lies to Peter that Amanda and him are deeply involved, he runs to Taylor for comfort.

After taking a punch from Billy, a frustrated Jake hits the road and ends up in a small town visiting his former girlfriend Colleen and her eight-year-old son. Back in Los Angeles, Alison has Billy as company when she hears her unborn baby's heartbeat. Meanwhile, Carter, wanting to get away from his solitude life, moves in with Sydney and begins looking for a new job and finds one... in Kyle's restaurant. Michael's personal care for Kimberly works wonders for her when they learn that her brain tumor is shrinking, but it has Megan wondering if she and Michael are finished. Peter finally starts a romance with Taylor, while a revenge-seeking Craig meets with Nick and hires him to spy on Peter, hoping to find out what he's up to in order to break Peter and Amanda up.

Jake returns to Los Angeles where he seeks another chance to get Alison back. Meanwhile, Nick threatens both Taylor and Peter after snapping a few compromising photos of them together. Michael is forced by Kimberly to choose either her or Megan. Carter continues to enjoy his view of the real world. But when Carter learns that he's a part of a competition for Sydney, he realizes that the world is not for him and decides to go back to his reclusive business world. At the end, Megan gets an unpleasant surprise when she is visited by Josh Laughlin, her abusive former pimp, who takes her hostage.

A nearly broke Craig moves into #8 apartment at Melrose to continue his pursuit and revenge against Amanda. Meanwhile, Josh introduces himself to Michael and threatens to expose Megan's past life at a hospital benefit, which all turns out to be Kimberly's plan to break up Michael and Megan. Peter and Taylor plot a dangerous scheme to steal Nick's incriminating photos of them together when Taylor drugs him long enough for Peter to sneak into his apartment to take the pictures. Undaunted, Nick and Craig switch to "Plan B" where Craig informs Amanda of Peter's liaison with Taylor, and she finally gives herself to him.

Josh continues Kimberly's plan to break up Megan and Michael when he plays all three of them against each other and sets Megan up to be arrested for solicitation to make it complete. Meanwhile, Matt's angry and rebellious 16-year-old niece, Chelsea, arrives in town for the funeral of her father (Matt's older brother), and causes concern for Matt and his mother. After a torrid night with Craig, Amanda realizes her mistake and rejects him, but he becomes oblivious to it and still wants in on a relationship. Taylor's world comes crashing down around her after Nick gives Kyle more proof of her and Peter's affair, in which he throws her out of his apartment and forces Nick to leave town after he beats Peter up.

After finally escaping Josh's abuse, Megan's life suffers more when she is evicted from her own house after word spreads of her arrest (and past life). Meanwhile, Chelsea stays with Matt at his place where she proves too much for him to handle. An eccentric customer sues both Sydney and Samantha after injuring herself at the boutique shop when a display falls on her, courtesy of Sydney's carelessness. Word gets out about Taylor's affair and past history with Peter after Alison overhears an argument between her and Kyle. Kyle's brief affair with Sydney sets off a chain of events among the tenants.

Against her doctor's orders to ease her work load, Alison goes to D&D to meet with a client. Meanwhile, Michael hires Megan as the new receptionist at Burns-Mancini practice despite Peter's wariness. Kimberly is hospitalized and is told of a new problem in her medical condition that could help her or kill her. With Samantha's help, Matt tries to find his runaway niece while he argues with his mother over who will take custody of Chelsea. Amanda invites Craig for a weekend drive up the coast where she tells him of a new turn in her life of vowing to be celibate for an indefinite period. Sydney meets Hilda Morris, the woman suing her, and her sleazy lawyer, Harry Dean, who make it clear that they will not back down from the lawsuit and plan to take all assets that Sydney owns. At the end, Samantha's controlling, violent ex-con father, Jim Reilly, suddenly shows up for a surprise visit.

Kimberly's mother arrives in town to persuade her to return home with her to Cleveland after learning of her health condition from Michael and Megan. Meanwhile, Sydney plays detective to prove that the woman suing her is a fraud, but once again gets bad luck when the conniving Hilda plays everyone against Sydney. Billy learns details about Samantha's father, Jim, about his criminal days, how he physically and psychologically abused her and her mother, and how Samantha turned him in after he moves in with them. Jake maintains a bedside vigil for Alison when she is hospitalized after developing serious problems with her pregnancy and might lose the baby. Peter begins to see Taylor as his long-dead wife Beth, and Amanda is persuaded by Craig to go out with him for a night on the town, where Kyle joins them. Also, Chelsea gets a disturbing phone call from her long-estranged mother.

Jake takes Alison on a private getaway to get married, which turns less than pleasant when their car breaks down, leaving them stranded in a small town. Jim tries to get a job at Shooters while he continues to try to win Samantha's respect, but threatens Billy whom he doesn't approve of. After Kimberly's death, Megan has a strange dream where Kimberly gives her words of wisdom regarding Michael, who is determined to dethrone Peter as Whilshire Hospital's chief of staff to claim the title for himself. Sydney, now bankrupt after losing the lawsuit, comes back to work for Kyle at his restaurant as a waitress, and is later approached by Harry Dean, the greedy insurance scam lawyer, who persuades her to take a fall and injure herself for a new potential lawsuit. Meanwhile, Chelsea has a reunion with her long-lost mother, Denise, (Matt's sister-in-law) who wants Chelsea to come live with her in Paris. Taylor doesn't like what Peter sees in her when she realizes that he's trying to make her into an image of her sister. Amanda and Kyle bond more while she is helping him work on the newest advertisement release for the restaurant.

Michael's devious younger sister, Jennifer Mancini, arrives in town from New York to stay, and moves in with him and Megan at the beach house and soon shows her true arrogant colors when she meets with Amanda for a job at D&D. Meanwhile, Craig thinks romancing Sydney will solve D&D's legal problems after she follows Harry's advice to sue the agency. Alison has an uncomfortable meeting with Colleen, Jake's former girlfriend and mother of his son, who arrives for a visit and makes Alison vulnerable to fall off the wagon again. Matt tries to stop Chelsea from going to Paris with Denise. Samantha secretly uses Billy's money to finance her father's next move after she learns that he has actually escaped from prison and asks her to hide him long enough for him to leave the country. Amanda goes out with Kyle to various art gallery exhibitions, and Taylor tries to fulfill Peter's fantasy of making herself as his dead wife Beth.

Amanda becomes Kyle's new silent partner to help him finance his dream of owning his own jazz club above his restaurant. Meanwhile, Jennifer becomes acquainted with some of the residents from Melrose which include Kyle and a very hostile Taylor when it's revealed that Jennifer was the young waitress from Boston that Kyle had an affair with years ago which almost broke up his marriage. Craig continues to romance Sydney who accepts his offer of pampering at a posh health spa in Palm Springs. Amanda blames Alison's mistake at work on her return to drinking and she and Billy try to convince an oblivious Jake about her problem. Jim keeps asking Samantha for more money, and Chelsea and Denise plot against Matt so that he will lose the coming courtroom fight for custody of Chelsea. Also, Taylor worries about Peter whose obsession with her as her sister is becoming more twisted.

Jennifer gets a job as a waitress/exotic dancer at a strip club which worries Megan fearing that Jennifer will follow down the path of prostitution as Megan did when she first started out that way. Meanwhile, an adoption agent interviews Jake and Alison about a possible adoption plan, which falls apart due to their increased drinking. Amanda demands a documentation on her investment with Kyle and later they both meet with Peter and Taylor to talk about divorce. Craig continues to woo Sydney and finally gets her to soften her stance on the lawsuit, but the greedy Harry is not pleased and threatens Sydney. Billy learns the truth about Samantha's father's escape from prison and soon finds himself in trouble when two detectives question him about the whereabouts of Jim. Taylor complains to Michael about Peter's increasing obsession about making her as his late wife. Matt and Denise agree to schedule shared custody of Chelsea for a while, but Denise secretly asks Chelsea to be less kind to Matt in the journal she is keeping of his movements.

At Megan's request, Kyle rescues Jennifer and lets her stay in his apartment at Melrose until she can find a more decent job. Shortly thereafter, Amanda takes Kyle for a vacation to the Caribbean where thoughts of romance fly between them as they prepare to proceed with their divorces. In Los Angeles, Taylor reluctantly approves Michael's plan against Peter to psychologically break him down by making him think he's a violent epileptic. Meanwhile, Jake and Alison plot to move from Los Angeles to start their lives over. Sydney's lawsuit against D&D is settled after Craig threatens Harry and then makes her a job offer she cannot refuse. Also, Jim threatens both Billy and Samantha after the police put a surveillance team on them.

Michael and Taylor's scheme to bring down Peter takes off when Taylor drugs Peter and fakes an attack she claims he made on her, claiming he was in an epileptic seizure at the time, and Megan mistakenly thinks that Michael and Taylor are having an affair after learning about time Michael is spending with Taylor. Meanwhile, Sydney is hired by Craig as the new efficiency consultant at D&D and together they immediately begin to challenge Amanda's authority. When Jake's ex-girlfriend, Colleen, comes to Los Angeles for a visit again with Jake's son, Alison gets drunk and confronts Colleen about her feelings for Jake. Samantha learns that Jim wants to take her with him out the country and finally agrees with Billy to cooperate with the police to track him down. While Amanda and Kyle prepare for the opening of their nightclub called The Upstairs Jazz Club, she becomes jealous when Kyle decides to hire Jennifer as the bartender. Also, Matt has a talk with Chelsea about the situation between her and Denise who continues to conspire against Matt.

In the two-hour season finale, Samantha is arrested when her father slips away from a police dragnet. Billy makes a deal to get her out of jail so the police will lead her to Jim. After Jake sells Shooters, Alison plots a course to make his dream of owning his own restaurant in Ojai come true. Meanwhile, Craig and Sydney announce their engagement and also their plan to leave D&D to form their own advertising agency which prompts a mass exodus of clients and workers, unable to stand Amanda's tyranny at the company. Michael makes Megan an unwitting accomplice with him and Taylor in order to make Peter lose his position as chief of staff at the hospital. Matt goes to court for the custody of Chelsea, who loses sympathy for her mother when Denise returns home one night drunk and a guy she picks up makes a pass on her.

Alison begins her plan to push Jake away when she tells Colleen that Jake really loves her and she should not give up with him. Jake then settles in Ojai and opens his own restaurant, while Alison moves to Atlanta... alone, both leaving Melrose for good. Although Amanda has strong feelings for Kyle, she refuses to seek comfort with him when she sees him with Jennifer. As Craig and Sydney plan their wedding, Amanda suffers an emotional breakdown after she's unable to keep D&D clients from leaving for Craig's new company. After Michael forces Peter to give up his position as chief of staff at the hospital, Peter wises up to Michael and Taylor's scheme after he makes his own MRI scan and finds out that he does not have epilepsy. Peter then attacks and severely injures Michael's hands and plots to murder Taylor for betraying him. Megan then confronts Michael about him using her to bring down Peter and tells him that they are finished. Matt's court case for custody of Chelsea comes to a close with the bias and pompous judge ruling in favor of Denise. But a short while afterward, Denise approaches Matt and tells him that Chelsea is better staying with him. At the end, Jim takes Samantha hostage from her supermarket job while on the run from the police, leading to a high-speed chase... which ends when the car coincidently hits Sydney after her wedding.
