’Twas the weekend before Christmas… With the holiday season upon us, many of us are starting to revisit some of our of Christmas favourites. I actually went to see a 4K re-release of the original Black Christmas last night here in Montreal. There’s something comforting upon returning to our old favourites every year, whether they be traditional Christmas classics, or perhaps something a little more modern, like Die Hard, which, despite many claiming otherwise, has totally established itself as a Christmas classic over the years.
Whatever the case, there are certainly Loads of Christmas movies, with everything from old-time classics like It’s A Wonderful Life or some of the many versions of A Christmas Carol (the Alistair Sim version is the best Imo), or something like Love Actually, which is virtually inescapable at this time of the year.
With that in mind, we’d love to figure out just...

Although it failed to captivate critics and audiences alike amid its initial release, Mixed Nuts has all the makings of a holiday classic.
Marking the movie’s 30th anniversary, co-writer Delia Ephron reflected on its cult status to Deadline as she remembered her and late sister Nora Ephron’s little-known 1994 Christmas film, “a great fun comedy that we wrote together” after the success of Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
“I do not believe it got good reviews,” she recently recalled. “I’m not someone who ever reads reviews, good or bad, so that’s not something I know what they said or anything, but I certainly know that it wasn’t initially a hit.”
Delia Ephron added, “But that is the weird thing with movies. They’re not, and then suddenly, they get this cult following of people who absolutely love them. And then I look at them again and I think,...

It’s not the best streamer when it comes to Christmas movies, but there are some hidden gems.
Like many relatively new streaming services, Peacock doesn’t have nearly the library of holiday films as some of the larger, more established platforms. However, it is not completely bereft of quality options. While I wouldn’t recommend subscribing to the NBCUniversal streamer specifically for its Christmas offerings, if you already have a subscription there is small, but eclectically interesting, group of holiday movies you can stream to keep you merry and bright through the end of the year.
Both the original “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and the animated remake “The Grinch” are available on Peacock; they even have a Grinch-themed Yule Log channel that you can put on in the background if you want to make sure that your holiday parties have a little tinge of mischief in the air.

Steve Martin and John Candy's beloved holiday classic has become a streaming hit 37 years after its release. Martin rose to prominence as a popular stand-up comedian during the 1970s and went on to star in movies such as Three Amigos, Bowfinger, Looney Tunes: Back in Action and played family patriarchs in the Father of the Bride and Cheaper by the Dozen films. Over his career, Martin has starred in a few Christmas movies; 1994's Mixed Nuts and 2015's Love the Coopers.
On the other hand, Candy rose to prominence as a member of Second City and starred in movies such as Stripes, Splash, and Spaceballs. During the 1980s, Candy was a frequent collaborator of writer-director John Hughes, starring in The Great Outdoors, written by Hughes, and Uncle Buck, written and directed by Hughes. Spy x Family's theme songs play a crucial role in hyping fans up for the show's captivating story. Some openings, like "Kura Kura", may lack cohesion, while others, like "Mixed Nuts," set a high standard for the series going forward. The ending theme "Shikisai" captures the heartwarming essence of the Forger family dynamic, resonating with fans.
The hit series Spy x Family has shown it values a solid opening and ending theme to hook fans. The way an anime starts and ends can make-or-break a new fanbase because of how important first impressions can be to viewers. For example, the first season of Attack on Titan became a cultural phenomenon because it featured one of the catchiest openings of any show at the time. Many shows have learned from series like Cowboy BeBop and Attack on Titan to make the best opening and ending themes they can to attract viewers,...

Plot: Steve Martin is one of the most beloved and enigmatic figures in entertainment. “Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces” dives into his extraordinary story from two distinct points of view, with companion documentaries that feature never-before-seen footage and raw insights into Steve’s personal and professional trials and triumphs. “Then” chronicles Steve Martin’s early struggles and meteoric rise to revolutionize standup before walking away at 35. “Now” focuses on the present day, with Steve Martin in the golden years of his career, retracing the transformation that led to happiness in his art and personal life.
Review: It pains me to think that a generation is growing up that does not hold Steve Martin in the same regard as generations past. At 78 years old, Martin was the biggest comedian of all time for some, a movie star for others, and one of the old guys from Only Murders in the Building for the rest.

With Christmas just one week (and one day) away, we wanted to ask you, the people, what your favorite Christmas Movie is? It doesn’t have to be the movie you think is the best, just the one that you eagerly anticipate watching every year. Is it the timeless tale of an angel getting its wings in It’s A Wonderful Life? or perhaps the under-appreciated (and genuinely hilarious) R rated The Night Before is how you kick off your holiday season?
Do you look forward to seeing Jack Skellington discover the true meaning of Christmas in the Christmas Movie Classic The Nightmare Before Christmas or watching Kevin McCallister take down the Wet/ Sticky Bandits in Home Alone 1&2 or perhaps seeing Clark W. Griswold struggle to have the perfect family Christmas in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is more your speed? Whatever film fills you with yuletide glee, we would love...

It seemed like he'd be with us forever, but the iconic game show presented and primetime TV mainstay Bob Barker has died at the age of 99. Barker was best known as the long-running host of "The Price is Right" revival, which premiered on CBS in 1972. Barker told contestants to "Come on down!" and ushered them through the fabulous Showcase Showdown innumerable times during his tenure as host through 2007. But even before those three-plus decades of television excellence, Barker had already hosted the popular game show "Truth or Consequences" for 21 years, between 1956 and 1975.
Barker is perhaps the most prolific game show presenter in American broadcast history, but his eminence extended beyond daytime TV. His trademark combination of unflappable reliability, chivalrous old-school charm, and slight underbelly of mischievous caddishness lent itself to a remarkable ability to send up his own persona in cameo roles in films and scripted television series. Parker Posey knows the pitfalls of being an indie darling.
The “Party Girl” breakout star recalled being pigeonholed as an indie actress early in her career, leading her to lose mainstream roles to Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts, among other stars. Posey told Vogue that she auditioned for “Speed” before the part went to Bullock, and shared even being told by her agent that she was “too indie.”
“I wasn’t really getting offered anything good,” Posey said of the early 2000s coming off of her iconic turn in “Scream 3.” “I would audition for all these great parts that ended up going to bigger names like Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock.”
She added that she asked her agent at the time, “‘Can’t I just be Matt Damon’s ex-wife in two or three scenes of some action movie?’ I would never get those either. I asked what the...

Parker Posey didn’t lose sleep over her “Sleepless in Seattle” role being cut from the final film.
The “Beau Is Afraid” and “Party Girl” icon revealed that she was cast in the Nora Ephron film, with the writer-director later reaching out to assure Posey that her performance was not why she was cut out of the rom-com starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.
“Nora was so supportive,” Posey recalled to Vogue. “She told me I was a ‘gifted comedienne,’ which I’d never been called before.”
Ephron wrote Posey a note apologizing for the final edit; Posey was later cast in Ephron’s “Mixed Nuts” and “You’ve Got Mail,” with a role that Ephron created specifically for her.
“Being on set with Nora was kinda like a cocktail party without the cocktails — it’s still the best catering I’ve ever had on a film set,” Posey said. “She...

Pulling together an episode of "Saturday Night Live" is a rigorous, high-pressure exercise. Though creator-producer Lorne Michaels has the process down to a science of sorts after supervising the series for most of its 48 years on the air, the tight Monday-to-Saturday window leaves little room for refinement. Watch the fascinating 2010 documentary "Saturday Night," which examines a week in the life of the show, and you'll see some of the funniest people on the planet bomb repeatedly as they scramble to fill 67 minutes of airtime with reasonably funny material.
"SNL" has had its ups and downs over its remarkably long run, but if you ask long-time fans to name some of the series' most consistently funny performers, their list must include the Lonely Island trio of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. Their "Digital Shorts" were the most anticipated segments of the show, and they almost always delivered. Almost. No...

It’s nearly impossible to become a household name faster than Haley Joel Osment did in the late ’90s. The critical and commercial success of The Sixth Sense catapulted him into the limelight as a child actor worthy of being considered alongside adult peers in major award categories.
Osment seemingly managed to avoid the dark side of young stardom despite his entrance into the entertainment industry coming in a way that can only be described as creepy Af.

Mixed Nuts: Tedeschi Returns to Acting School in Charming, Vigorous Homage
For her fifth narrative feature, the indefatigable Valeria Bruni Tedeschi conjures a nostalgic reunion in front of and behind the camera with Les Amandiers (Forever Young). Set in the late 1980s, the ensemble feature follows a group of twelve theater students auditioning for and receiving entrance to Patrice Chéreau and Pierre Romans’ famed Theatre des Amandiers in Nanterre. Set around the time Tedeschi herself worked with Chéreau in his 1987 film Hotel de France (she would also later feature in his 1998 film Those Who Don’t Love Me Can Take the Train), it’s a generous snapshot of impassioned youths honing their craft for a venerated, unabashedly gay creative whilst wading through drug addiction, the AIDS crisis and a myriad of personal dilemmas.…...

Liev Schreiber has established himself as one of the finest and most diverse actors in Hollywood over the past 25 years. After making his big-screen debut in Nora Ephron's Mixed Nuts in 1994, Schreiber landed the iconic role of Cotton Weary in Wes Craven's Scream in 1996, a character he reprised twice in the two following franchise sequels.

While steadily working over the next two decades, Schreiber's visibility increased even more upon landing the role of Victor Creed aka Sabertooth in The X-Men franchise in 2009. A few years later, Schreiber landed arguably the role of a lifetime when cast as the titular tough-guy Ray Donovan.

Juliette Lewis is so well-known for playing so many characters on the edge that it’s almost surprising to see her in director Tate Taylor's Ma as Erica, a single mom who moves back to her hometown with her teenage daughter Maggie (Diana Silvers). Determined to get back on her feet after a divorce, Erica is equally resolved to be a solid parent to her daughter while also being her friend.

“Wonder Woman” is expected to top the weekend; claims that it will be the most successful film ever directed by a woman will soon follow. That’s possible, but far from guaranteed: While Hollywood’s pretzel logic would suggest that women rarely direct blockbusters, Patty Jenkins’ success story will have a lot of competition.
The dearth of women directors trusted by studios to helm top movies becomes even more suspect when adjusting grosses to current ticket prices. Despite limited opportunities, 14 have grossed over $200 million, and 40 total over $100 million when calculated at current numbers.
Below, we go into detail about the top directors and their movies; there’s a lot to see, with some compelling and surprising conclusions. However, more than any other statistic, here’s one that stands out: Among the most successful female directors, after adjusting to current ticket prices, the career average per film gross is over $100 million for several.

Team Experience has been sharing their favorite Christmas flicks. Here's Chris...
I'm going to make the assumption that most of you haven't seen my favorite Christmas movie, Nora Ephron's Mixed Nuts. "Classic" may be a stretch as it was both a box office and critical bomb, and has since been lost to time. The film has all of the makings of a cult following that has yet to materialize: a completely silly premise, insane moments, and a cast quite literally full of familiar faces. No really - the main cast includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Juliette Lewis, Liev Schreiber, Adam Sandler, and Rita Wilson. Anthony Lapaglia wears a Santa suit most of the movie. Even the throwaway parts are played by Rob Reiner and Joely Fisher.
But the film is an utter daffy farce with even more off the wall subplots than famous faces. Let's do a short run...

The recent box office success of The Boss firmly establishes Melissa McCarthy as the current queen of movie comedies (Amy Schumer could be a new contender after an impressive debut last Summer with Trainwreck), but let us think back about those other funny ladies of filmdom. So while we’re enjoying the female reboot/re-imagining of Ghostbusters and those Bad Moms, here’s a top ten list that will hopefully inspire lots of laughter and cause you to search out some classic comedies. It’s tough to narrow them down to ten, but we’ll do our best, beginning with… 10. Eve Arden The droll Ms. Arden represents the comic sidekicks who will attempt to puncture the pomposity of the leading ladies with a well-placed wisecrack (see also the great Thelma Ritter in Rear Window). Her career began in the early 1930’s with great bit roles in Stage Door and Dancing Lady.

George Miller
Australian director George Miller has been selected to head the jury at the upcoming 69th Cannes Film Festival running from May 11th to 22nd. Miller was at Cannes last May when Fury Road screened as an official out-of-competition selection.
In a statement, Miller says: "What an unmitigated delight. To be there in the middle of this storied festival at the unveiling of cinematic treasures from all over the planet. To spend time in passionate discourse with fellow members of the jury. Such an honor. I'll be there with bells on!" [Source: THR]

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.
The sadly forgotten Christmas comedy Mixed Nuts (1994) has been a holiday viewing tradition for me since its release 20 years ago. Co-written and directed by Nora Ephron from the earlier French film Le père Noël est une ordure (1982), Mixed Nuts bears almost no resemblance to the director's more famous romantic comedies. The holiday farce deals with the staff of a Los Angeles suicide hotline (Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson) who must contend with a bickering pair of expectant parents (Anthony Lapaglia, Juliette Lewis), a melancholy cross-dresser (Liev Schrieber), a quirky ukulele player (Adam Sandler) and other assorted characters as they face eviction as well as a serial killer known as The Seaside Strangler on Christmas Eve.

Adam Sandler's new movie Men, Women & Children hits theaters this weekend, but pretty soon you'll need to be a Netflix subscriber to see his new releases. The actor and comedian signed a four-picture deal with the streaming service earlier this month. "I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only," he said in a statement. "Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks. .Let the streaming begin!!!!."
Now we have a question for you: What is Adam Sandler's single greatest movie? Feel free to vote for a 1990s classic...

It’s a shame that more viewers aren’t able to focus on the weirdness of The Leftovers instead of its melancholy. If they could, the show — which, by the way, is pretty fantastic — might not already be known as the biggest bummer on television. In this week’s episode — only the series’ second — beleaguered police chief Garvey fears that his bagel has vanished into thin air, making it the first breakfast food to join the departed. And it only gets stranger from there…

In Sunday’s episode of True Blood — “You’re No Good” — Billith decides that he had his premonition of all his frenemies being deep-fried by the sun so that he could change the future and save them. Moreover, he’s so convinced that he is now immortal that he greets the morning sun with arms outstretched — you know, Godric and/or boy band style. Mixed Nuts: Hogan’s Latest a Welcome Return to Roots
After almost two decades knocking around the studio system after the success of his 1994 hit Muriel’s Wedding landed him in Hollywood, Australian director P.J. Hogan returns to his homeland and reunites with leading lady Toni Collette for Mental, one of his most heartfelt features to date. While his latest may not come close to usurping the greatness of Muriel, it sees Hogan once again utilizing his madcap zaniness and over the top flourishes to explore otherwise serious and emotionally heavy motifs. While he always seems to be riding the fine line of schmaltz and kitsch, Hogan’s strongest asset is his ability to disarm us with goofy humor in order to expertly explore serious issues as well as combat stereotypes.

“What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful in feminine women is something masculine,” observed Susan Sontag, who was both a little butch and a lot beautiful. I remembered this quote today in part because I noticed that "Victor/Victoria," starring Julie Andrews as the unemployed performer who finds a work as a male drag queen, was on TCM tonight. And in part because the image it conjured was watching "Taking Woodstock," when in walked Vilma, a musclebound blonde in a candy-pink dress, who resembled Mamie Van Doren with stubble. S/he spoke in a familiar voice, like honey mixed with molten asphalt. Holy cow! Liev Schreiber in drag?!? (In his first screen performance, "Mixed Nuts," he was also a cross-dresser.) In "Taking Woodstock," I particularly liked the contrast of pink frock and Deep Purple voice. I’d nominate him for cinema’s genderbender Hall of Fame.

In light of this weeks news of the passing of noted author, playwright, producer and director Nora Ephron, today we are highlighting some of the most memorable moments from her accomplished and versatile career onscreen and onstage. Ephrons artistic output consisted of collections of essays, memoirs, novels, screenplays, feature films, plays and producing duties on projects close to her heart, as well as a considerable amount of awareness raising for womens causes and general charitable work for the arts. While perhaps best known for her much-loved trio of romantic comedies When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless In Seattle and Youve Got Mail, Ephron also penned the screenplay for the Mike Nichols biopic Silkwood about whistleblower Karen Silkwood, as well as wrote and directed the recent hit comedy Julie amp Julia, re-teaming with her friend and consistent collaborator, three-time Oscar-winner Meryl Streep. Incidentally, Streep actually played Ephron - or at least a...

As a leading female in her field of work, Nora Ephron made a huge impact on Hollywood. Creating memorable characters such as Harry and Sally, bringing a climatic kiss to an all-time high in Sleepless in Seattle, and making Bewitched fit with a modern audience, she created moments of heartwarming love, as well as adding her own unique humour that made even the most serious of people laugh.
Using her talent as a screenwriter in the late 1980s, Ephron was one of the few females to be successful in the competitive, male dominated business of Hollywood. Arguably her most famous work would be When Harry Met Sally, with a contemporary,‘out-there’ appeal the film holds towards sex and relationships, Ephron wrote a script that was not only appropriate, but incredibly relatable for audiences with the discussion sex as a casual and enjoyable act rather than something that should be taken seriously.

Billy Crystal, who starred with Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, told the Huffington Post: "She was a brilliant writer and humorist. The Oscar-nominated director and writer Nora Ephron has died aged 71. We look back over her career in clips
Nora Ephron's first screenwriting effort never saw the light of day: a polish on the script for All the President's Men, based on the case of her then-husband, Carl Bernstein. Director Alan J Pakula scrapped that version, but it was a heavyweight kick-off to a career largely remembered for its lighter moments.
In fact, Ephron's first work to make it to the big screen was similarly serious and scrupulous: Silkwood, a 1983 drama directed by Mike Nichols inspired by the true-life story of a whistleblower at a malfunctioning plutonium plant who died in a suspicious car crash.

Chicago – Six years after her diagnosis of preleukemia, filmmaker Nora Ephron died Tuesday, June 26, in a New York hospital at age 71. She leaves behind a legacy that began with her work as a celebrated essayist and continued through a successful film career that earned her three Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay. Her films provided especially memorable showcases for the talents of actresses Meg Ryan and Meryl Streep.

Ephron received her first Oscar nod for “Silkwood,” Mike Nichols’ 1984 drama inspired by the life of whistleblower Karen Silkwood (played by an Oscar-nominated Streep), who died under suspicious circumstances. One of the most distinct female writer/directors in the business, Nora Ephron, has sadly passed away at the age of 71 from pneumonia. The pneumonia was a complication resulting from acute myeloid leukemia which she has been quietly battling since her diagnosis in 2006.
Ephron pretty much set the standard template for contemporary romantic comedies and, more importantly, has been a signature voice for women in movies. In times when film studios and producers almost never actively pursued films either made by or for women, she helped break through many of those barriers.
Starting out as a journalist for the likes of Esquire and The New York Times Magazine, Ephron began her foray into cinema penning an unused draft for 1976's "All The President's Men" which lead to the TV movie "Perfect Gentlemen" and then the Meryl Streep-led "Silkwood" which earned Ephron an Oscar nomination.

Sad news this evening, as writer, screenwriter, and director Nora Ephron has passed away at the age of 71.
It's hard to imagine the modern romantic comedy without the influence of Ephron, whose perceptive and humorous take on how the sexes interact set a template for a generation. It was Ephron's sense of humor that first got her noticed, pairing with (now celebrated writer) Calvin Trillin for a satirical newspaper that caught the eye of New York Post publisher Dorothy Schiff, who offered her a job. This began Ephron's journalism career that saw her write for a variety of publications including New York, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine. In 1976, Ephron married Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame, and even did a draft of the screenplay for "All The President's Men" that ultimately wasn't used, but again, someone saw her talent and gave her a shot.

Journalist, author, playwright, filmmaker, and three-time Oscar nominee Nora Ephron passed away today, reportedly after a battle with leukemia. She was 71.
The seeds for Ephron’s trailblazing career as a pop-culture polymath arguably began soon after her birth in New York City in 1941. She was the first of four daughters to Henry and Pheobe Ephron, who were successful screenwriters for films like Carousel and There’s No Business Like Show Business. I got to meet Nora Ephron 20 years ago when she was promoting her directing debut, "This Is My Life," and I found her to be exactly like one of the heroines of her movies: smart, worldly, self-effacing, and as wittily eloquent as we all wish we could be in real life but almost never are. Actually, she was the heroine of most of her movies, since she specialized in the thinly veiled autobiographical roman a clef. Ephron, who died at 71 on June 26, made herself a trailblazer -- as a writer of influential romantic comedies (notably, "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail"), as a successful director at a time when few women held that distinction, and as one of the most powerful women in the film industry -- but she did it all simply by being herself. The urge to transform her life into art came naturally to Ephron.

A few months back, I found out the wonderful news that I am going to be a father. Over recent weeks I have found that my curiosity to re-visit pregnancy based films has grown. It has become very apparent to me that this is a topic rife for discovery, but generally falls into the same sort of brackets – fear of what will come. After watching and hearing my wife go through endless weeks of morning / all day sickness, I can understand why most film-makers pick up on the scary side of the gestation period. But there are also so many wonderful parts of the process. After paying a bit of attention, and seeing mine and my wife’s own experiences reflected on celluloid, I have noticed that despite their similarities, there are some clear divides within the overall ‘experiences’ of the Hollywood birthing process.
Below is a collection of films which all revolve around pregnancy.

Halloween is quickly approaching and finding healthy treats (did I just use the words “healthy” and “Halloween” in the same sentence?) that the kids will get excited about can feel like a hopeless endeavor for many parents.
No matter how vigilant I am most of the time, on Halloween night I’m not about to start to depriving my son of all the junky candy that goes with the fun of the holiday.
