Sci-fi movies often prioritize stories and visuals over scientific accuracy, because their goal is to entertain, not educate. Many concepts, like space travel or futuristic technology, are based on imagination rather than real science, or at least science that is currently based on our understanding of physics still far away.
Filmmakers may also take creative liberties to make the plot more thrilling or easier to follow for the audience. Most people aren’t really all that bothered by these inaccuracies, but Neil deGrasse Tyson is not most people.
Celebrity scientist Tyon often points out scientific inaccuracies in Hollywood movies, especially in sci-fi films, not to spoil the fun but to encourage better accuracy. He often highlights unrealistic concepts, like artificial gravity or sound in space, and provides corrections based on real science.

Know that when celebrated astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson nitpicks the bad science commonly encountered in mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, he's not trying to spoil anyone's fun. He's just being a nerd, and I think we can all respect that. There's nothing shameful about possessing a lot of scientific knowledge, and pointing out the physics and astronomical errors in a movie can only, one might hope, encourage filmmakers to be more accurate next time. Case in point: Tyson infamously complained to director James Cameron that, in "Titanic," he got the night sky wrong. Tyson knew what the constellations looked like in the North Atlantic on that fateful April night in 1912, and suggested that Cameron, using digital trickery, rework the skies to match. Cameron, also being a nerd, obliged.
When it comes to most space-bound movies, though, Tyson has a lot to complain about. Audiences have accepted that most sci-fi spacecraft, for instance,...

Tonight at the Golden Globes, Ali Wong won the ceremony’s second-ever award for Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, paying tribute in her speech to her Bay Area roots.
“I come from San Francisco and that’s where I started doing stand-up, and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all the stage time that I got there, and all the practice I got to become a stand-up comedian,” she said.
Wong went on to thank Molly Schminke from the Sf Punch Line comedy club, as well as her best friend Mia, saying in closing, “Thank you so much for all your love and support throughout the years. This means a lot. Thank you so much.”

Seth MacFarlane is now (and perhaps always will be) best known as the man behind his massive animated hit shows "Family Guy" and "American Dad." MacFarlane's creations now rival the likes of "The Simpsons" and "South Park" in terms of longevity and staying power in pop culture. But MacFarlane is more than that, as evidenced by his live-action love letter to "Star Trek" aka "The Orville."
The series, which as of this writing has run for a total of three seasons, premiered on Fox in 2017. "The Orville" later moved to Hulu for its third season, which arguably changed the show for the better but that's another issue entirely. During the show's second season when it was still on Fox, it actually featured a cameo from none other than action maestro Bruce Willis. That said, viewers would be forgiven for not noticing him.

Supernatural owes its genesis to a simple lie told by creator Eric Kripke while he was pitching the show to Warner Bros. Television. The mystery drama series centered around the Winchester brothers, a pair of ghost/demon hunters who are on the lookout for their father after he goes missing while hunting for the demon who killed their mother.
While the series has become a staple in pop culture and the Winchesters have some quote-worthy moments, the original version of the show was reportedly starkly different. In fact, showrunner Eric Kripke would have blown the deal if he had not thought quickly and changed up one key detail regarding the storyline of what would be Supernatural.

Watchmen remains one of DC Comics’s most iconic intellectual properties. It’s seen its share of television and film adaptations, sometimes to polarizing degrees. DC even brought the series to retcon its superhero universe with the crossover event, Doomsday Clock.
Needless to say, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s participation in the superhero medium has been widely profitable. I still remember the hype fans had before going into Zack Snyder’s 2008 film adaptation. There’s a lot of love for this story of a broken-up team in a volatile world.
It’s since been classified as an outstanding work in comic book history, so much so that it’s been lauded by literary crowds. Many often consider it the moment “when comic books grew up.” While Chris Claremont told mature stories with the X-Men in the early 1980s and other comics would periodically touch on serious subjects, Watchmen was a turning point.

Best British Films of 2024: Is cinema dying? That’s the question on everybody’s lips in an age of plummeting box office figures and rising blockbuster budgets, hoping another spandex suit will be the silver bullet that fixes up enough ticket sales to fund another superhero flick. Martin Scorsese, Sam Mendes (The Franchise), Mathieu Kassovitz, and David Lynch are unanimous in their publicized belief that cinema is clutching its last breath on death’s door, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone completely. Film is a stubborn master, beloved by all and crowd surfing along the mighty few who still believe in storytelling for storytelling’s sake, rather than for profit.
Steve McQueen and Alice Lowe are just a couple of names on this list who still believe in the values of originality, creativity, authenticity, and artistry—in the power of real filmmaking. Let’s hope cinema can...

For the most part, a trend that emerges during any particular year of cinema doesn't have anything genuinely competitive about it. Sure, there may be the "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano," "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" years, where highly similar projects are developed to compete with each other, but most trends that occur are less about an intentional duel and are more an indication of where the culture's head is at. Remember 2017, when a John Denver song turned up in no less than five separate movies? While there's no one catch-all explanation for such a thing happening, it's intriguing and potentially illuminating to identify the trend and see what, if anything, it speaks to in the contemporary real world.

Is Colin Jost a blue-blooded, Harvard-educated, ruling class shill, or is he a murderous communist terrorist hellbent on destroying America? Do we even need a third option?
On Saturday night, Jost took to the desk of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” and made a surface-level quip about how many women want to sleep with accused CEO shooter Luigi Mangione. On paper, the joke is exactly the kind of focus-grouped, topical-but-not-opinionated, easy and forgettable punchline that you’d expect NBC’s biggest comedy product to put out about such an inflammatory issue. The line simply reads, “Luigi Mangione dropped his extradition fight and was flown from Pennsylvania to New York to face multiple charges. In related news, Bumble exploded,” and, for all SNL fans know, the show’s publicist is just as likely as its writing staff to have written the down-the-middle bit.

Billy Bob Thornton is more than happy to play a foul-mouthed Santa (“Bad Santa”) or a high school football coach (“Friday Night Lights”) or a NASA scientist (“Armageddon”), but one thing he won’t do on the big screen is kill Tom Cruise. During an interview on The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast, the actor remembered turning down two big Hollywood villain roles: Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” and the arms dealer Owen Davian in “Mission: Impossible III.”
“I don’t have much interest in those kinds of roles,” Thornton said. “With the Green Goblin, I didn’t feel like getting up at 4 a.m. for five or six hours of makeup. And with ‘Mission: Impossible III,’ I didn’t want to be the guy trying to kill Tom Cruise. If you’re the bad guy in a big movie like that, audiences remember it forever. I prefer to...

It's been a long road, getting from there to here.
Jon Turteltaub's 2018 shark thriller "The Meg" was based on Steve Alten's novel "Meg" that was published way back in 1997. The book was optioned for a film adaptation by Hollywood Pictures, a Disney subsidiary, the year prior, and several screenplay drafts were immediately written. Jeffrey Boam was said to have written an adaptation of "Meg," but Disney didn't like it. Indeed, none of those screenplays were deemed good enough to develop into an actual feature, and three years passed without any movement on the project. In 1999, the rights reverted to Alten.
Then, in 2005, the book was optioned again, this time by New Line Cinema. The new version of "Meg" was going to be an impressive affair, with Shane Salerno as its screenwriter, and Jan de Bont as director. A 2008 report in the Los Angeles Times even noted that "Meg...

Bruce Willis, one of Hollywood's finest, made wearing a vest during a hostage situation seem perfectly acceptable. Many of his most beloved roles saw him wielding a squint like Clint Eastwood and a level of sass that other actors just couldn't deliver. But much like Willis himself, his top three rated films on Rotten Tomatoes are a surprising package that would certainly make for an interesting unofficial trilogy to watch over a weekend. That includes what Rt has deemed the best of the bunch: a movie about a decidedly vexed New York City cop with no shoes and a partiality to Roy Rogers films.
Indeed, it should come as absolutely no shock that "Die Hard," Willis' breakout vehicle and a bullet-riddled pillar of the action movie genre, is the actor's highest rated film on Rt among critics. Earning a well-deserved 94% from the website, "Die Hard" broke the mold that so...

When an actor stars in a film, their promotional responsibilities are often written into their contracts. They have to appear on talk shows or post about the film on their social media accounts ... or even just not say anything bad about the production, no matter how the film turns out.
With the benefit of time, though, many actors look back on their work and want to let fans know that they were just as disappointed as we were. An actor trashing their own movie lets us know that they're human just like the rest of us, and that they too can tell when something just didn't work. It can also make for a great press anecdote. Take Dennis Hopper, for example, who told The A.V. Club that his son once asked him why he bothered to star in "Super Mario Bros." The "Easy Rider" star recalled telling his son, 'Well,...

What could be stranger than the hollow pomp of neoliberal politics in the face of Armageddon? While crafting this cheerfully bonkers satire, Canadian co-directors Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson became fascinated by real footage of G7 leaders coming across a puddle and awkwardly negotiating walking around it. This miniature farce didn’t exactly offer much hope for the future of humanity.

The ’90s – a time when Bruce Willis was ‘the guy’ for Hollywood. Fresh off Die Hard and coasting through a streak of hits, hits like The Fifth Element, Armageddon, and The Sixth Sense, he was Hollywood’s everyman hero with just the right amount of smirk. If a movie needed someone to crack wise (sometimes for the heck of it) while saving the day, Willis was first in line. But even when you’re on top, it’s easy to misread the room.
The Sixth Sense is a Bruce Willis classic | Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Over the years, Willis passed on roles that turned out to be major hits—or gave others their defining moment. Some decisions were understandable, while others…well, even Bruce has admitted he’d love a do-over. Here are ten roles Bruce Willis turned down and (probably) regretted instantly.

Bruce Willis was on a bit of a heater heading into 2001. The star had a habit of keeping busy, which meant that there would be a dud or two mixed in with the successes, but after the washout of "Last Man Standing" in 1996 (and excluding the animated hit that was "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America"), he had four consecutive years with a box-office smash in "The Fifth Element" ($264 million worldwide), "Armageddon" ($554 million WW), "The Sixth Sense" ($673 million WW), and "Unbreakable" ($248 million WW). Why not make it five?
Willis surely didn't lack for offers in 2001, but for whatever reason he rolled into that year with one film on the slate, Barry Levinson's caper comedy "Bandits." Co-starring Billy Bob Thornton and Cate Blanchett, it's a funny enough movie that rode its mild charms to a $67 million global gross — which fell short of the movie's inexplicably fat $75 million budget (money that most...

A smattering of well-known classic titles are now on their way to the crisp realm of ultra-high-definition physical media. Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits has just unveiled a number of movies that have been announced to release in 4K Blu-ray early next year. We’ve reported earlier that the Pierce Brosnan/Linda Hamilton volcano film Dante’s Peak is set for a February 11 release, the same day will also see the 4K Uhd release of Howard Deutch’s teen comedy Pretty in Pink (1986). It is said to feature Dolby Vision Hdr and a new “Filmmaker Focus” featurette.
It has also been confirmed that Disney, who is the parent company of the Buena Vista label, has completed a 4K restoration of the Michael Bay 1997 disaster blockbuster Armageddon. On December 6, the Bruce Willis asteroid movie is set to screen in this remaster at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles as part of An Evening with Diane Warren.

Put the town on alert! The 1997 volcano film Dante’s Peak will be erupting into a new 4K Ultra-High Definition Blu-ray on February 11th. According to Blu-ray.com, the Universal Pictures film will be getting a new physical media release courtesy of Kino Lorber. Like most fans of cinema, I enjoy reading a lot of reviews; not just to find a worthwhile movie to watch, but also to gain some insight and look into different perspectives on films that I find interesting. I especially like reading film reviews from the past to see how assessments back then measure up to how the film is viewed today, and to examine whether similar evaluations of the directors and predictions regarding their careers have aged well.
We all know how certain movies, like “The Thing” and “Blade Runner,” were poorly received during their time, only to become highly influential within their genres later on. But it’s even more fascinating to read why these movies were panned and what led to their reassessment. With that in mind, I would like to talk about eight reviews or assessments that I found particularly fun to revisit with the benefit of hindsight.

There's nothing better than curling up in front of the boob tube on a Friday night with a bucket full of popcorn to watch a classic piece of cinema. Luckily, in this day and age, movies are readily accessible on various streaming platforms. Peacock, in particular, carries a surprising amount of top-notch films to ensure that popcorn doesn't go to waste.
While perusing their streaming library, there were roughly 60 movies on Peacock that I'd happily watch any day, ranging from blockbuster franchises like "Harry Potter" to quirky comedies like "Billy Madison" -- not to mention the endless supply of Hallmark and original movies. Of course, we couldn't include all our favorites, but we've narrowed it down to a Top 30, ranked from great to, well, greater. I wholeheartedly recommend every single movie on this list.
While some are ranked higher than others, we'd gladly kick back and watch any of these...

Exclusive: Grammy winner and 15-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren is set to compose an original song for Maserati: The Brothers, starring Anthony Hopkins, Michele Morrone, Andy Garcia and Jessica Alba.
The attachment marks a reunion between Warren and Italian producer Andrea Iervolino (Ferrari) after they previously worked together on Tell It Like a Woman, for which Warren received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
The sports car biopic is being directed by Oscar winner Bobby Moresco (Crash). Filming is due to get underway this month in Italy.
Maserati was founded in 1914 in a garage in the central Italian city of Bologna by three brothers: Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto. From its early days, the company – which is now known for luxury cars — was connected to the world of car racing. Maserati’s first Grand Prix vehicle is the one that Alfieri Maserati was driving in the 1927 Messina Cup race...

The original "Jason Bourne" films hold up as the best American action movie trilogy made in the last few decades. Loosely based on the 1980s novel trilogy by Robert Ludlum, Matt Damon stars as Bourne, a CIA assassin who winds up on the run from his handlers after coming down with amnesia.
In this rock solid trilogy, which of the three is the best? "The Bourne Identity," where the audience and Jason himself slowly piece together the truth of who he is, has the most involved narrative. Unlike the next two sequels, "Identity" is not only a relentless chase. Directed by Doug Liman, "Identity" also lacks the visual language (shaky-cam) that defines the subsequent "Bourne Supremacy" and "Bourne Ultimatum."
For my money, "The Bourne Ultimatum" is the best one. Director Paul Greengrass refines his skills and makes the movie move like an action machine. It also has a similar mystery...

The Oscar-winning actor, writer, director, musician and star of Bad Santa, Armageddon and The Man Who Wasn’t There is ready to answer your questions
What is Billy Bob Thornton’s most iconic role? Some may say the taciturn barber in the Coen brothers’ The Man Who Wasn’t There, others might contend it’s the learning disabled killer in his early film Sling Blade. But we all know the truth: it’s the sex-addicted alcoholic Father Christmas in Bad Santa who is obsessed with the “three Bs”.
Be that as it may, Thornton has had a stellar Hollywood career since emerging in the mid-90s. Sling Blade, the independent 1996 film he wrote, directed and starred, won him a best adapted screenplay Oscar – though his directing career went into hibernation after a difficult time adapting Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses a few years later. In the first month of Donald Trump’s second term as president, an uncertain America will make a point to honor the “canceled” comedians who were brave enough to choose the exact same targets as the president’s attack ads.
Earlier today, The Recording Academy released the full list of nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards in February. The Best Comedy Album category, specifically, is shaping up to be a slugfest, as superstars Nikki Glaser, Jim Gaffigan, Trevor Noah, Dave Chappelle and Ricky Gervais will all compete for one of the highest honors in stand-up. Of this worthy crop of contestants, two out of five nominees will almost certainly prove to be divisive should either of them take home the coveted trophy, as Gervais and Chappelle both used their most recent specials, Armageddon and The Dreamer respectively, to continue their campaign to denigrate and dehumanize the transgender community while flaunting...

Ricky Gervais, Dave Chappelle, Jim Gaffigan, Nikki Glaser, and Trevor Noah were the five comedians nominated for the Grammy for Best Comedy Album on Friday morning.
Gervais, Chappelle and Noah scored for their respective specials Armageddon, The Dreamer, and Where Was I, which were all released on Netflix, with Glaser recognized for HBO’s Someday You’ll Die.
Remarkably, the nomination was the first for both Gervais and Glaser, whose career reached new heights on the heels of her performance in Netflix’s Tom Brady roast. While Gaffigan recently took to Prime Video with the special Dark Pale, he was recognized for The Prisoner, which is the only one of the nominees only to have been released in album form.
Already, four of the five sets have been recognized by other major awards bodies. Gervais’s Armageddon won the first-ever Golden Globe for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television earlier this year,...

Bruce Willis has earned a lot of accolades with his outstanding career as an actor, especially with his portrayal of John McClane in the Die Hard franchise. Apart from this, he has also worked on projects like The Sixth Sense as well as Armageddon to name a few. In the last years of his career, Willis switched to low-budget direct-to-video movies, that have been criticized on several platforms as well as poorly received.

For many cinephiles, November becomes Noirvember, a month dedicated to noir movies.
Noir is often characterized by its fatalistic outlook, highly stylized imagery, down-on-their-luck and morally ambiguous protagonists, urban settings, shadows, corruption, narration, and of course, the femme fatale. All of these elements marry well with our favorite genre: horror.
This week’s streaming picks blend noir and horror together, kicking off your #Noirvember with horror movies that bear the earmarks of a classic noir film.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Angel Heart– Hoopla, Kanopy
The perfect marriage of psychological horror and noir, Angel Heart follows Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke), a private investigator that Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro) hires to track down missing musician Johnny Favorite. Harry’s search leads him to New Orleans, where he finds voodoo, murder, love, and a deal with the devil.

Among the most inspired choices for a 4K restoration this year would have to be Alan Rudolph’s Breakfast of Champions. Despite coming out in the middle of Bruce Willis’ Armageddon/The Sixth Sense heyday, the 1999 Kurt Vonnegut adaptation died a quick death at the box office, which certainly wasn’t aided by the critic class who thought at the time American Beauty was somehow a more scathing critique of the country’s false promises and personal repression. A genuinely bizarre film, bolstered by an outstanding cast and an abrasive form, Breakfast of Champions arrives at just the right moment for reclamation.
In his earnest romanticism and wild stylization, Rudolph, for lack of a better comparison, could at times come off as the child of Frank Borzage and Seijun Suzuki, which made it extra exciting that he sat down with The Film Stage in what turned out to be his first-ever Zoom call.

Good Omens will return for season 3, but it'll be quite a bit different than what was originally planned. TV Line reports that they've learned from inside sources that the third season of Prime Video's hit fantasy show is going through a bit of a restructure. Instead of being multiple episodes long like the previous two seasons, Good Omens' third and final outing will only consist of one 90-minute episode. In other words, the show is going out with a TV movie.
This almost certainly comes about as a result of the ongoing sexual assault allegations against author Neil Gaiman, who co-authored the original Good Omens novel with beloved Discworld creator Terry Pratchett and was set to serve as the sole showrunner for the television show's final season. Back in early September, Prime Video paused work on Good Omens season 3 over these allegations, with Gaiman offering to step away from the...

The third and final season of Good Omens at Prime Video will stretch — or maybe shrink — the definition of “season” in TV terms.
The Amazon-owned streamer announced Thursday that the series, which stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant and is based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel, will end with a single, feature-length episode. The 90-minute installment is set to begin production early next year in Scotland.
Prime Video also noted that Gaiman won’t be involved in production on the series ender (though he did contribute to its writing). Earlier this year, five women accused the author of sexual assault; their claims are detailed in a podcast titled Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman. He has denied any wrongdoing but offered to step away from the final Good Omens to let the production go forward and conclude the story.

As movie fans are likely well aware, the Criterion Collection is the home video company that distributes prestige editions of some of the greatest films ever made, plus Armageddon. Cinephiles love Criterion so much that they’ll even wait for several hours in the rain just to climb into the back of a van that resembles one of their office’s storage closets.

Tsai Ming Liang Guide: As the 20th century drew to a close, cinema, like other art forms, was undergoing a metamorphosis. Hollywood, in a desperate attempt to keep audiences engaged, embraced new technological advancements, such as improved visual effects. It sought to captivate the masses by blurring the lines between reality and imagination, producing sci-fi blockbusters like “Terminator 2” (1991), “Jurassic Park” (1993), and “Armageddon” (1998). However, thousands of miles away from sunny Los Angeles, another group of filmmakers across Europe and Asia consciously took cinema in a different direction. Rather than helping audiences forget the fourth wall, they aimed to reinforce it, creating films that were acutely aware of their own impact, intentionally distancing viewers from the on-screen events by withholding the cut.

The Sixth Sense may have been a monster hit, but it inadvertently killed its own studio brand! Here’s how Disney’s mega-hit ended Hollywood Pictures!
Twenty-five years after its debut, much has been written about The Sixth Sense and its impact. One thing overlooked is how almost no one in Hollywood expected this supernatural thriller to make an impact. Indeed, in their annual Summer Movie Preview issue in 1999, Entertainment Weekly didn’t even mention Sense.
Sure, it had a big-name star in Bruce Willis, but it was an odd film from a completely unknown writer/director being released in August, traditionally the dumping ground for bad movies. It debuted to $26.6 million, then the highest August release. Thanks to good reviews, strong word of mouth and, of course, that now-famous twist ending, Sense became the second highest-grossing movie of 1999, $672.8 million worldwide. It earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and director,...
