Angelina Jolie may have missed out on a competitive Gotham Award nomination this year for her acclaimed performance in “Maria,” but the Oscar-winning actress will still participate in the upcoming ceremony.
On Thursday, the Gotham Film & Media Institute announced Jolie will receive the Performer Tribute for her performance as Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s upcoming film “Maria.” The actress will receive the honor at the 34th edition of The Gothams, taking place on Monday, December 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. According to a press release, “The tribute will honor Jolie’s rendition of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas.”

During the 1960s, American music was taken over by artists from the U.K. This era became known as the British Invasion, with U.K. pop and rock artists dominating the American charts. Many of these artists came and went, but others were wildly successful and remain in the pop culture zeitgeist today.
Here are the 5 best rock bands during the British Invasion 1. The Yardbirds The Yardbirds | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

On March 13, 1965, Eric Clapton made one of the most famous decisions in classic rock history: to leave The Yardbirds. He felt the group was leaving their blues roots behind. Clapton didn’t want to be in a pop band.
Eric Clapton and The Yardbirds | Gab Archive/ Getty Images Eric Clapton left The Yardbirds on March 13, 1965
Clapton was only 18 years old when he joined The Yardbirds in 1963. The group had just become the house band for London’s Crawdaddy Club. Clapton’s heart was in the blues. In George Harrison: Living in the Material World, Clapton said he was a sort of blues missionary at the time.
The Yardbirds was Clapton’s first professional band. However, within two years, Clapton recognized they were heading down a path he didn’t want to follow. Their third single, “For Your Love,” was too pop for Clapton. He decided to leave before they released the song.

“Severance,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Women Talking” took home top prizes at the Writers Guild of America Awards, Hollywood’s final major awards ceremony before next week’s 95th Oscars.
But the bigger message that emerged from the night was how the industry’s scribe tribe is engaged and ready to back their guild in the upcoming contract talks for a new master film and TV contract.
“Welcome to the Writers Guild Awards and strike authorization vote,” said host Janelle James, star of “Abbott Elementary,” at the start of the Los Angeles ceremony, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel. Comedian Michelle Buteau led the New York festivities, which ran concurrently at New York’s Edison Ballroom.
Buteau kicked off New York’s night with a joke that broke the ice regarding the WGA’s looming contract negotiations: “I hope everyone enjoyed the cocktail hour. That was the studios’ counteroffer to streaming residuals.

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!" These are the immortal words that begin the song "Making Our Dreams Come True," the catchy tune used as the theme song of the popular series, "Laverne & Shirley." Cindy Williams, the actress who played the perky and positive albeit meek Shirley Feeney, has sadly joined her co-star Penny Marshall, passing away at the age of 75. Williams' children Zak and Emily Hudson confirmed the passing with the Associated Press following a brief illness.
"The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed," the statement said. With a charged reference to the 1976 death of The Yardbirds singer Keith Relf, Peacock’s Poker Face teaches a valuable music industry lesson: Song pluggers should check their cables before plugging in. Especially drummers, surrounded by metallic conductors, trying to break out original material. When they do, as Phil Collins of Genesis or Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad can attest, those songs can change the group dynamic and take center stage. Electricity like that should be channeled.

Leslie Odom Jr. was more than a bit uncomfortable during a recent Zoom conversation with the Wrap’s Sharon Waxman as she ticked off all of his accomplishments including a Tony for his performance as Aaron Burr in ‘Hamilton,” a Grammy for “Hamilton” and now two Oscar nominations for Regina King‘s “One Night in Miami.” He contends in both Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the legendary singer Sam Cooke and Best Original Song (with Sam Ashworth) for “Speak Now.” “I wish I could have been off camera for that,” he admitted with a smile.
He characterizes Kemp Powers‘ reimagining of a historical meeting in 1964 in a Miami between Cooke, Malcolm X, Jim Brown and Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) to be a “wonderful beginning in a lot of ways.” As he explained: “Film is so new to me and it’s such a very public way to learn.

The casting for One Night in Miami is truly top notch. The Regina King-directed film is based on the stage play by Kemp Powers of the same name and follows a fictionalized conversation between four Black icons - boxer Cassius Clay (Eli Goree), football player Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), soul singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and activist Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir) - on the historic night of Feb. 25, 1964 when 22-year-old Clay became the world's heavyweight boxing champion after defeating Sonny Liston. And if you were wondering: yes, that really is Odom Jr. singing.

Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown, and Muhammad Ali walk into a motel room. No really, this isn’t a put-on. It’s an event that actually happened (more or less) on the night that Ali won the heavyweight championship of the world in 1964, and right before he changed his name from Cassius Clay. Now what these four historic figures at the intersection of Black male celebrity and wider American pop culture said to each other that evening is unknown… but it makes the mind wander; it also makes for a hell of a good story in One Night in Miami.

The Oscar spotlight is once again on Regina King, who won the Academy Award for supporting actress for 2018’s “If Beale Street Could Talk.” But this time around, it’s for her feature film directorial debut “One Night in Miami,” a drama set in 1964 that imagines a meeting in a hotel room with Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay), Malcolm X, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke after Ali’s title win over Sonny Liston. Amazon Studios is releasing the film in limited theaters on Christmas Day and will begin to stream the drama on Jan. 15.
All men are at a crossroads in their lives: Malcolm X is thinking of leaving the Black Muslims but not before he announces that Clay will become a Muslim; the famed football star Brown is looking to make a break into movies; and pop singer Cooke, who is slick and successful, but is worried about his career path.

Exclusive: Holly Robinson Peete has been tapped for a major recurring role in the current fifth season of ABC comedy series American Housewife. She begins filming next week.
Peete will play Tami, a close friend of Katie’s (Katy Mixon) before the Ottos moved to Westport. Tami helped Katie quite a bit when Katie was a new mom — Katie always looked to Tami for advice, even considering her to be a bit “mom sensei.” When Tami’s two older children went off to college, she and her husband celebrated being empty-nesters. That celebration resulted in a now eight-year-old daughter. So when Tami moves to Westport with a youngster of her own, Katie is thrilled to reconnect with her old friend and hopes to return the favor and help her out.
American Housewife, about a mother (Mixon) of three raising her flawed family in a wealthy Connecticut town, was created by Sarah Dunn.

“The High Note” began life as a screenplay titled “Covers,” and at times the music-themed drama turns into a tribute to the power of a cover song performed by someone other than the person who originated it: Aretha Franklin with Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Share Your Love,” the Staples Singers with the Band’s “The Weight,” P.P Arnold with Cat Stevens’ “The First Cut Is the Deepest,” the Dixie Chicks with Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” …

Dakota Johnson, with her sun-dazed smile and wary doe-eyed glow (the look of an innocent who knows how to thread her way through a world of predators), can be a winsomely appealing performer, but what is she doing in “The High Note” playing Maggie, the personal assistant to an imperious pop-star diva? It’s the kind of job that would toughen up anyone who’s had it for a week. But Maggie, after three years of working for Grace Davis, a high-maintenance superstar from the ’90s played by Tracee Ellis Ross, still seems like a college student who won an internship. She’s sweet, naive, and docile, even when the position requires her to be demanding. She comes off more like an assistant to the assistant.
Maggie lives in gobsmacked awe of Grace, who performs in sold-out arenas all over the world, even though she hasn’t put out a new album in a decade.

The red carpet has been walked upon, the Spritz has been supped and the lion has roared. This year's Golden Lion selection is yet another surprise choice, the perfectly serviceable but by no means extraordinary Venezuelan-set drama From Afar, which follows the unlikely relationship between a maker of false teeth and a Caracas street tough. Lorenzo Vigas' film is an assured debut with two fine performances, especially from Alfredo Castro, familiar to world cinema-inclined audiences as Pablo Larraín's muse in Tony Manero and Post Mortem. Head of the Jury Alfonso Cuarón perhaps shows his generosity to another Latin American filmmaker in awarding the Silver Lion to Pablo Trapero for his Martin Scorsese-inspired true crime thriller The Clan.
The runner-up award in the Grand Jury was awarded to Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson for their superb R-rated stop motion masterpiece Anomalisa, for me the best film of the competition.

★★☆☆☆ Following a Malickian break between films - his debut Round the Moons Between Earth and Sea was released in 1997 - Giuseppe M. Gaudino tells with For Your Love (2015), the final entry to compete for the Golden Lion at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, a tale of ordinary madness told in an extraordinary but often scattergun way. The woman on the verge of as nervous breakdown is Anna Ruotolo Scaglione, played by Italian actor and director Valeria Golino. A long musical introduction Neapolitan dialect introduces us to Anna as a "capascaqua" or "featherbrain" as the subtitles would have it. However, right from the start Gaudino suggests that Anna is suffering from a quite severe mental illness.
Anna's general unhappiness is already evident from her face, but as if that wasn't enough For Your Love is mostly played out in an ill-conceived monochrome palette reminiscent of those adverts for Calvin Klein's Obsession.

Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress (first chapter here).
As 1980 got going, Walter was distracted from Janie’s absence by progress on the band front. Garrick had found an electric guitarist, Tom O’Reilly. Though still lacking bass and drums, they decided to try putting together some new songs and practicing some covers -- because as TomO (as he styled himself) pointed out pragmatically, a good set of rockin’ covers would get them gigs at the frats that lined the south side of 114th St. Over a round of beers at the Marlin, a brightly lit bar that had less visual flair than a high school cafeteria, but the cheapest beer near campus, they decided to take turns suggesting covers.
Walter led off: "For Your Love." He liked it because of its harpsichord riff.
"Fuck that!" blurted TomO. "I was told we'd be covering Nuggets-type songs.

She thought that once she saw Damon face-to-face, the memories would come back, but nothing is working. She feels bad and apologizes to Damon, but he can’t stand to look at her with her inability to share his strong emotions. So, um, yeah… I still haven't seen This Is 40. Probably won't, to be honest. Though, I must say, I'm more than a little intrigued by all the musical cameos Judd Apatow left on the cutting room floor. I mean, he's always struck me as the sort of director who writes with the DVD deleted scenes section in mind, but this really takes the cake.
Previously… Listen Up: Eels – "Calling For Your Love"
In another unused clip that surfaced online today, Eels' Mark Oliver Everett pops by the offices of Paul Rudd's indie record label stooge to perform a gorgeous rendition of "What I Have To Offer"… and then announce he's hopping over to Warner Bros. Records. Why Everett thinks it's one of the best songs he's ever written (it isn't) or why he insists on talking in third person is beyond me. It's not quite Billie Joe Armstrong...

Katy Perry at the Super Bowl
Happy Birthday to Kathy Najimy, who turns 55, and Natalie Cole is 62. Time to name your top five Natalie songs! Here are mine: 5. "I Miss You Like Crazy," 4. "Jump Start," 3. "I Live For Your Love," 2. "Dangerous," 1. "Someone That I Used To Love." By the way ... something is happening tomorrow.Sanaa Lathan and Jonathan Groff are joining the Season Two cast of the Starz series Boss. Great news for Jonathan, but this means I'll have to try watching Boss again. In ratings news, yesterday's Super Bowl was the highest rated ever (making it the most watched program in history), and Madonna's halftime show was up slightly from last year's Horrible Screech Machine's halftime show. Meanwhile, The Voice's post-game season premiere was up 40% from last years post-game episode of GleeAs expected, the PTC is flipping out over M.I.A.'s middle finger.Below you can see the new trailer for Avengers,...

Jones' Brain Aneurysm Scare
Actress Tamala Jones has revealed she suffered a brain aneurysm when she was 23, but kept it secret over fears the health scare would ruin her career by making her "look weak".
The Everybody Hates Chris star has told of her terror after a blood vessel in her brain ruptured, causing her to lose feeling in the right side of her body and collapse to the floor in her bathroom.
Jones recalls struggling through a day's work shooting the U.S. sitcom For Your Love before finally admitting herself to hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with the brain disorder.
She tells Black Enterprise, "I went to the hospital after work and the doctor thought that it was a miracle that I was even alive, walking or talking, or that I even worked an entire day before I got to him. After that, I started having seizures. I had MRIs (and) cat scans, and they found out that my aneurysm actually burst. Had it been on another side of my brain I probably would have been paralysed forever - it was on the left side of my brain... They said once that blood dried up I would get my feeling back."
It took Jones three months to recover and now she is hoping to use her experience to urge others to seek medical attention as soon as they feel any unusual pains.
She adds, "I hid the fact that I had an aneurysm for a very long time. I was embarrassed and I just felt like no one needed to know because it made me look weak... But I felt like it was my duty as a survivor to speak about it.
"I mention the aneurysm to anybody that I can... because it's something that happened to me and something that can happen to anybody in this world. If you are given warning then you can probably save your own life."...

I'm slowly catching up with Hiroki's body of work. Not too long ago I watched Girlfriend, Someone Please Stop The World which turned out to be a perfect entry film to get acquainted with this director. New Type: Just For Your Love is a different beast altogether though. A film that is probably best appreciated by hardened Hiroki fans who know what to expect. Only then can you appreciate the unique feel this film bears.
Hiroki stems from the world of pinku cinema, but once he transformed himself into a regular drama director he developed his own particular style of drama and kept at it. No wonder I was pretty surprised to learn Hiroki was very interested in doing other genres. For all those wondering what such a film would be like, New Type will give you all the answers you need. Beware though, it just might not be what you were expecting.

Tamala Jones hates morgues. You'd think that fear would be problematic for her, because she plays sassy medical examiner Lanie Parish on Castle, but she does her homework by watching Dr. G: Medical Examiner instead! I learned this and a lot more about the charming actress.formerly of The Tracy Morgan Show, For Your Love, and Veronica's Closet.when I interviewed her last week. We talked about working with More >>...
