The BFI has launched a trailer for the heartwarming comedy-drama ‘Four Mothers.’

The movie follows a struggling writer juggling four very different mothers during a chaotic weekend after his friends unexpectedly leave them in his care.

Directed by Darren Thornton, the cast includes James McArdle, Fionnula Flanagan, Dearbhla Molloy Paddy Glynn and Stella McCusker. Niamh Cusack makes a cameo appearance as a medium and Rory O’Neill, aka Panti Bliss, one of Ireland’s best-known drag performers, plays a therapist.

The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. UK director-producer Kirk Jones is set to direct the drama series You’ve Been Trumped, based on Anthony Baxter’s 2011 documentary, for Vertigo Films and digital entertainment company Blazing Griffinand Montrose Pictures.

It will explore how a small Scottish community stood up against Donald Trump and his proposed golf course development.

This will be the TV debut of Jones, best known for directing Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 He has also written the screenplay.

Hollywood writer and director Kirk Jones is to helm Vertigo Films’ buzzy upcoming drama series You’ve Been Trumped, marking his first foray into television drama.

The Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee and What to Expect When You’re Expecting director will write and direct the four part series, which is based on Anthony Baxter’s award-winning 2011 documentary of the same name about the small Scottish community who stood up to Donald Trump and his golf course development.

The drama, based on Anthony Baxter’s 2011 documentary, tells the story of a small Scottish village who took on the then-reality TV star when he tried to build a golf course in a nature reserve. There are people who will tell you that John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” traffics in bumper-to-bumper Irish stereotypes, but those people will be a bit off the mark — “stereotypes” is a wildly inadequate word for how this fable-esque romantic comedy renders the quirks and customs of life in the verdant farmlands of Ireland’s County Mayo. This sometimes enchanting (but always demented) soda farl of banter and blarney couldn’t be a broader caricature of Irish culture if it were written by the Keebler elves and directed by a pint of Guinness.

We’re talking about a movie so in love with its own lucky charms that it makes “Waking Ned Devine” feel like “In the Name of the Father” by comparison. Think that’s overstating the case? Recently launched U.K. Avod service W4free has added over 100 feature films to its platform after striking licensing deals with distributors including Kaleidoscope, Platform Entertainment, The Film Consortium and Icon Film Distribution.

Among the titles added to the service, which launched in November 2019, are films such as 1989’s “Henry V,” starring Kenneth Branagh; 2007’s “La Vie En Rose,” starring Marion Cotillard; Oscar winner “Once”; “The Passion of the Christ,” directed by Mel Gibson; “Whale Rider” with Keisha Castle-Hughes; and 1998’s “Waking Ned.”

W4Free’s British rollout last year followed that of a sister service, Watch4, in German-speaking markets in 2018.

W4Free and Watch4 are operated by Zug-based Video Solutions, the content and tech business run by Chris Sharp.

Exclusive: 45 Years, Spooks: The Greater Good executive Richard Holmes made redundant amid company cuts.

Creative England’s senior film executive for production Richard Holmes has been made redundant amid staff cuts aimed at reducing overhead.

Holmes, who joined Creative England in 2013, was instrumental in Creative England film investments including Andrew Haigh’s acclaimed second feature 45 Years and Kit Harrington thriller Spooks: The Greater Good.

He was an executive producer for Creative England on titles including Notes On Blindness, The Ecstasy Of Wilko Johnson, Keeping Rosy, Burn Burn Burn and upcoming films The Girl With All The Gifts by Colm McCarthy and Rachel Tunnard’s Tribeca-bound Adult Life Skills.

Creative England declined to comment on the decision.

Holmes’ credits as an independent producer prior to his stint at Creative England include James Watkins’ Eden Lake, war drama Resistance, Waking Ned Devine and Shooting Fish.

February can be kind of a pill -- it's dark, it's cold, you have to deal with or avoid Valentine's Day -- but at least it gives you a good excuse to stay home and binge-watch. Amazon just listed its February offerings for Prime Video streaming and Amazon Video purchase. For example, fans of "The Americans" can steam Season 3 (yay!), and you can check out Amazon Studios' first-major film, "Chi-Raq," from director Spike Lee.

It was recently announced that Prime Members can now add Showtime, Starz, and more video subscriptions to their Prime memberships for $8.99 per month. In February, members can use that feature to see the new seasons of "Billions," "Shameless," and "Black Sails," among others.

Finding Nemo isn’t the only early 2000’s film getting a long-awaited sequel in 2016. In a just a few months, Universal will release My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Nia Vardalos‘ follow-up to her insanely successful first feature, with virtually all the cast returning, as well as some new faces. The first trailer has now landed for the film directed by Kirk Jones (What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Waking Ned Devine).

Once upon a time, most movie theaters showed more than a single feature. For the price of your ticket, you’d get two movies, maybe a cartoon, sometimes a featurette. You got good value for your money in those days especially at second or third run theaters or revival houses. This was in the days before DVD, Blu-Ray, or even VHS.

In fact, for a long time, the movie studios only got one bite of the apple. Oh, a few movies might show up again; Disney did a good job of bringing classics out of their vaults. When the movies were sold to show on TV, that would also generate some revenue but nothing like today when a major part of the money made by films comes from Blu-Ray and DVD sales. (Aside: I wonder how true that will remain with Netflix and Hulu, et al.)

The first time I...

I love movie and television soundtracks. I’ll often use a given soundtrack while I work, letting it fuel my writing. I can’t listen to music with lyrics in them; that interferes with my process. I’ll get themes, characters, even scenes or whole plots from the music. Soundtrack music is in service of the story that the film is trying to tell; it’s a part of the narrative, heightening the emotion that’s being invoked.

I have my own particular favorites. The composers usually have a large body of work but certain key works resonate within me – Jerry Goldsmith’s Chinatown and Patton, James Horner with Field of Dreams, Shaun Davey’s Waking Ned Devine, Elmer Bernstein’s To Kill A Mockingbird (has there ever been a more beautiful and evocative theme?) and, of course, The Magnificent Seven.

In 2002, the indie hit of the year, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, blew up at the box office. Considered one of the biggest independent successes of all time, it pulled in a gargantuan $368 million worldwide off a tiny $5 million budget. To capitalize on its established fanbase, a spinoff TV series, My Big Fat Greek Life, was rolled out, but flailed in its small screen incantation. Now, some twelve years later the comedy about an inevitably hilarious culture clash is finally getting a big screen sequel in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

Initial reports earlier this year hinted that a follow-up was on the cards, and The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that development has begun. Exclusive: UK sales outfit boards psychological thriller ahead of Toronto.

London-based sales outfit Parkland Pictures has boarded world rights to Steve Reeves’s thriller, Keeping Rosy, which will play at Dinard Film Festival (Oct 8-12).

Parkland will introduce the film to international buyers at Toronto.

Maxine Peake stars as a career-driven woman who is passed over for a long-expected promotion, leading to frustration which boils over with dire consequences.

The film also stars The Inbetweeners’ Blake Harrison and was produced by Richard Holmes (Eden Lake, Waking Ned), his third collaboration with French producer Isabelle Georgeaux after Jadoo and Resistance.

It marks Reeves’ first feature film, accompanied by DoP Roger Pratt (Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Chocolat) and composer Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliot).

The deal was negotiated by John Cairns and Pierre-Louis Manes-Murphy for Parkland Pictures and by Richard Holmes and Isabelle Georgeaux on behalf of Redemption Films.

One of the better movies I missed at this year's Cannes Film Festival turned out to be Matthew Warchus' crowd pleaser "Pride." The British film made its debut in Director's Fortnight and, unfortunately, as less hectic as Cannes is compared to its prestige festival cousins it rarely allows you to catch up with everything on the schedule.  From a distance the film seemed like "The Full Monty," "Waking Ned Devine" or "Calendar Girls" with a slight Working Title spin. Basically, a movie I could catch down the road. Plus, it was screening at the end of the festival when there were a number of other priorities.  Excuses, excuses, excuses.  Needless to say, I'm kicking myself for not seeing it at Cannes because it's a good one. UK veteran returns after stint in Australia.

London-based Met Film School has appointed Neil Peplow as Chief Operating Officer in a major new role to oversee all education and training programmes, reporting to Chief Executive, Jonny Persey.

Peplow returns to the UK after serving as Director of Screen at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. He previously worked as Director of Film at Creative Skillset and has worked in productino on films including Waking Ned and TV show La La Land.

Jonny Persey, Chief Executive of Met Film, said: “When we decided to recruit a COO, there was one perfect candidate, and we got him! Neil’s experience and skills, across the film/television and education industries, make him the ideal person to help take Met Film to the next level.
