Who needs Netflix and Prime? BBC iPlayer has a terrific collection of films to watch – here’s our updated list of what to watch right now (and when they’re leaving the service).

Whilst all eyes tend to be on streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime when it comes to movie updates, on the quiet the BBC iPlayer service continues to play host to a limited, diverse selection of films. What’s more, a good number of them you can download to your tablet to watch on the move.

So, without further ado, welcome to the weekly updated iPlayer film list. This list will be updated every week with the test available data from the BBC, in order of how long you have left to watch (so you can prioritise your viewing pleasure)

Netflix and Roku have taken U.S. rights on the BBC and Blink Films’ Wham! doc, which airs tomorrow.

Wham!: Last Christmas Unwrapped has been acquired from Sony Pictures Entertainment by Netflix and Roku for audiences in the U.S., Sbs for Australia and TV New Zealand.

The doc tells the story of how George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s beloved ’80s duo turned one song into a cultural phenomenon. It launches tomorrow on the BBC and the following day in the U.S. We unveiled trailer late last week, which can be seen below.

The BBC has picked up an hourlong Blink Films and Sony documentary special on the everlasting impact of “Last Christmas” by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, one of the best known festive tunes of all time.

Wham!: Last Christmas Unwrapped will tell the story of how the band turned the track into a cultural phenomenon. It will present a number of those involved with the song including new interviews with Ridgeley, while there will be archive radio and video footage of Michael, who died on Christmas Day 2016.

Update 21/05/24: As confirmed on the latest edition of Richard Osman and Marina Hyde’s The Rest is Entertainment podcast, the latest cast member to be confirmed is Celia Imrie in the role of Joyce Meadowcroft. Joyce would love that, we feel.

As previously reported by Variety in April 2024, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Pierce Brosnan are also attached to The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, which is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone director Chris Columbus. Mirren will of course play former spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play psychiatrist Ibrahim, and in something of a casting curveball, Pierce Brosnan will play former union organiser Ron. That just leaves police officers Donna and Chris, and handyman/fixer Bogdan as main characters still to be announced.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.

Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.

The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.

Audiences for Wicked Little Letters are 60% female, 40% male, with a range of women age 30-plus, unusual for a period film as they skew older. It’s playing especially well in major cities and college towns but also popping in smaller markets like Seattle. Word of mouths is terrific,...

Maria Loohufvud and Love Martinsen, a married couple as well as artistic collaborators, make their feature debut as directors with this affectionate portrait of the Calendar Girls, an amateur dance troupe based in southern Florida. Entirely made up of women over the age of 60, a few considerably older, the dancers perform on flatbed trucks in parades and retirement homes, community centres and private events in order to raise funds for Southeastern Guide Dogs, an organisation that trains guide dogs for veterans and other visually impaired people. Is Take That back for good?

“Greatest Days” — the screen adaptation of the British pop act’s stage musical “The Band” — has unveiled its first trailer, with a U.K. and Ireland release date set for June 16.

News of the movie’s release comes just a week after the band was revealed as one of the acts set for King Charles’ coronation concert next month.

The group will also perform at a London premiere for “Greatest Days” on June 15. The performance will be broadcast alongside previews of the movie, which will screen at cinemas around the country on June 15.

Starring Aisling Bea (“The Way Up”), Alice Lowe (“Black Mirror”), Jayde Adams (“The Outlaws”) and Amaka Okafor (“The Responder”), “Greatest Days” follows five best friends who have the night of their lives seeing their favorite boy band in concert.

The Sands International Film Festival of St Andrews has set Stanley Tucci as a special guest for this year’s edition, where he will present a screening of his 1996 culinary comedy Big Night.

The film will screen at the festival on April 15 at the Byre Theatre. The screening will be followed by an on-stage conversation between Tucci and writer-director Joe Russo (Avengers Endgame). Russo’s Agbo label is among the backers of Sands.

Set in 1950s New Jersey, the pic follows two brothers who run an Italian restaurant. Business is not going well as a rival Italian restaurant is out-competing them. In a final effort to save the restaurant, the brothers plan to put on an evening of incredible food.

Tucci co-wrote the screenplay for Big Night with his cousin Joseph Tropiano and co-directed with fellow actor Campbell Scott (Jurassic World: Dominion). He also stars in the pic, which debuted at Sundance.

Exclusive: The Sands: International Film Festival of St Andrews, held in northern Scotland, has set the lineup for its second edition, running April 14 – 16.

Over the course of three days, the festival will host a series of official screenings and industry talks from filmmakers and artists such as director Joe Russo, who returns to St Andrews after supporting the inaugural edition in 2022.

Russo will be bringing with him what the festival has described as an “early sneak peek of a hotly anticipated project” that he has executive produced under his Agbo production outfit. The title of the pic will not be unveiled until the screening begins.

The festival has also set Russo as the host of a public discussion on gaming and contemporary storytelling with Epic Games Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard, who has worked as a creator and director on titles such as Fortnite.

London’s Phoenix Theatre is planning to turn things Upside Down when it debuts “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a prequel theatrical experience tied to the runaway Netflix hit. The fifth and final season of the series begins production this May, and the new play will be up “later this year.”

The author is Kate Trefry, a staff writer, story editor, and co-executive producer on the series, credited as writer on three teleplays, one from the second, third, and fourth seasons. Exclusive: ‘Get Ready For It’! Man-band Take That have shot a cameo scene for the Greatest Days film that features hits from the group’s song book.

Take That members Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald revealed exclusively to Deadline that they joined Greatest Days filmmaker Coky Giedroyc (Save Me) in Athens, Greece on Tuesday to shoot a short scene for producer Danny Perkins’ Elysian Film Group production.

It was a truly glamorous moment. “We play buskers,” Barlow joked.

Owen explained that the trio is seen busking at a train station in Athens. They perform the number “Shine”, a song from their 2006 comeback album Beautiful World.

The show follows the Dutton family in the titular year, a time of Prohibition, the Great Depression, and westward expansion. “1932” is a followup to “1883,” the latter of which told the story of the Dutton family as they made their way to Montana to found what would become the Yellowstone Ranch in the mothership series. “1932” was ordered to series at Paramount+ back in February. Canada’s Bron Releasing has taken worldwide sales rights to Coky Giedroyc’s UK feature Greatest Days, based on stage musical The Band, which is set to the music from boy band Take That.

Karl Spoerri and Viviana Vezzani’s Switzerland and Los Angeles-based SPG3, is financing and producing the feature, alongside Danny Perkins’ nascent UK outfit Elysian Film Group.

The Sundance Film Festival doesn’t kick off until next week, but that’s not slowing the dealmaking.

Juno Films has acquired North American rights to the feature-length documentary “Calendar Girls,” a look at a dance team comprised of Florida women over 60. The film will have its world premiere at this year’s festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition Category. Before Sundance went virtual due to rising Covid cases, the dance team had planned to make the trek up the mountain to Park City to perform.

Juno Films plans to release the film in theaters in the early summer.

Dame Helen Mirren has been chosen to receive the 2022 life achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild. The honorary award will be presented at the SAG Awards ceremony on February 27 from The Barker Hangar.

Updated: Suzanne Mackie, one of the U.K.’s foremost drama executives, has departed “The Crown” producer Left Bank Pictures after 12 years to set up her own independent production company, Orchid Pictures. Variety understands from sources that the producer has also struck an exclusive deal with Netflix.

Mackie has been a key architect of “The Crown’s” success on Netflix from the very beginning, playing a key part in shepherding the Golden Globe-winning show’s first four seasons and working closely with writer Peter Morgan. She will continue as an executive producer on the show for its forthcoming seasons 5 and 6.

Based in London, Mackie’s Orchid Pictures will work across television and film, and she will continue working with Netflix through Orchid Pictures. Senior figures in the UK film industry have paid tribute to Robert Mitchell, the former managing director of Walt Disney UK who died suddenly in February aged 56.

The Middlesbrough-born Mitchell worked in marketing for Warner Bros; was at Palace Pictures and was one of the first hires by Daniel Battsek at what was then Buena Vista International (Bvi) in 1992.

The 70th Berlin International Film Festival will honor Oscar-winner Helen Mirren with an honorary Golden Bear and homage.

The award ceremony on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Berlinale Palast will include a screening of Mirren-starrer The Queen.
