Update 21/05/24: As confirmed on the latest edition of Richard Osman and Marina Hyde’s The Rest is Entertainment podcast, the latest cast member to be confirmed is Celia Imrie in the role of Joyce Meadowcroft. Joyce would love that, we feel.
As previously reported by Variety in April 2024, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Pierce Brosnan are also attached to The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, which is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone director Chris Columbus. Mirren will of course play former spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play psychiatrist Ibrahim, and in something of a casting curveball, Pierce Brosnan will play former union organiser Ron. That just leaves police officers Donna and Chris, and handyman/fixer Bogdan as main characters still to be announced.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.
Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.
The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.
Audiences for Wicked Little Letters are 60% female, 40% male, with a range of women age 30-plus, unusual for a period film as they skew older. It’s playing especially well in major cities and college towns but also popping in smaller markets like Seattle. Word of mouths is terrific,...

Takeaway 1: Call the Midwife is praised for its standout cast, who bring engaging character drama to the historical medical series. Takeaway 2: The show explores poignant political and social topics, including abortion, racism, religion, poverty, and teen pregnancy. Takeaway 3: Each actor, such as Helen George and Linda Bassett, has the opportunity to shine in the show and has flexed their acting muscles in other projects.
When the BBC historical medical drama returned for a 12th season, the Call the Midwife cast was particularly praised for being one of its standout features. Call the Midwife takes place in London in the late 1950s and 1960s and follows a group of midwives working at the Nonnatus House and how their work and the patients they treat affect both their professional and personal lives. The White Bird: A Wonder Story cast has the opportunity to tell a new story in the world of the 2017 movie Wonder, and features an equally impressive lineup as the original. In 2017's Wonder, Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) was a young boy with a rare facial deformity whose fellow students bully and ostracize him when he tries to start going to a private middle school rather than continue homeschooling. One of these students is a boy named Julian, who torments and bullies Auggie and his own mother even helps persecute Auggie by Photoshopping him out of a class photo because she felt he didn't belong. White Bird: A Wonder Story focuses on Julian after his parents pull him out of school, and he goes to visit his grandmother.

Documentary following a group of women dancers over 60 is well made but leaves you wondering if there’s more to know about these spirited performers
Maria Loohufvud and Love Martinsen, a married couple as well as artistic collaborators, make their feature debut as directors with this affectionate portrait of the Calendar Girls, an amateur dance troupe based in southern Florida. Entirely made up of women over the age of 60, a few considerably older, the dancers perform on flatbed trucks in parades and retirement homes, community centres and private events in order to raise funds for Southeastern Guide Dogs, an organisation that trains guide dogs for veterans and other visually impaired people. Dressed in homemade, leg-revealing spandex and sparkle-festooned outfits that variously suggest unicorns or “patriotic reindeer” at Christmas time, the women perform dance sequences set to an eclectic selection of tunes, from Harry Belafonte’s Jump in the Line and Everybody by the Backstreet Boys,...

Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary I Got a Monster, which follows the story of Baltimore's infamous dirty cop, Wayne Jenkins. Directed by Kevin Casanova Abrams, the new film from Greenwich Entertainment breaks down how a highly decorated police officer and leader of the Baltimore Police Department’s elite Gun Trace Task Force wound up with a federal indictment on racketeering charges.
I Got a Monster goes beyond a simple case of corruption, instead diving deep into the racial tensions and anti-Black violence that were often at the heart of the crimes. Abrams' documentary details the secret FBI wiretap operation that helped put a stop to Jenkins and his crew's crime spree and also helps viewers question the pockets of moral bankruptcy hidden within the country's code of law and honor.

It looks like the play’s the (stranger) thing!
London’s Phoenix Theatre is planning to turn things Upside Down when it debuts “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a prequel theatrical experience tied to the runaway Netflix hit. The fifth and final season of the series begins production this May, and the new play will be up “later this year.”
The author is Kate Trefry, a staff writer, story editor, and co-executive producer on the series, credited as writer on three teleplays, one from the second, third, and fourth seasons. The prequel play is based on a story from Trefry and “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer, as well as Jack Thorne. Thorne is the writer behind Netflix’s hit “Enola Holmes,” but, more relevant to this endeavor, he is the author of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the two-part theatrical experience/license to print money with productions in London,...

Helen Mirren knows her way around the Berlin International Film Festival, which this year hosts the out-of-competition world premiere of her latest film, Golda, in which she stars as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir.
The future Oscar winner visited the festival way back in 1985 when it screened the sci-fi pic 2010: The Year We Made Contact, director Peter Hyams’ sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. In her first big Hollywood production, the British actress, then 38, drew on her heritage — her father had been born in Russia — to play the Russian cosmonaut Tanya Kirbuk, who commands a ship on its way to Jupiter.
She would later admit: “The script was somewhat incomprehensible to me and the role was not the best. The story was, however, prescient in that it foretold the joint America-Russian missions into space that happened after the collapse of Communism.” Nevertheless, she gamely joined in...

"We use magic from our hearts to make the world a better place." Madman Films has just unveiled the first official (Australian) trailer for the documentary film Calendar Girls, which initially premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film profiles the dance troupe known as the "Calendar Girls" - Florida's most dedicated dance team for women over 60, shaking up the outdated image of "the little old lady," and calling for everyone to dance their hearts out, while they still can. Swedish co-directors Maria Loohufvud & Love Martinsen weave the dancers' personal stories with their colourful routines, shot in the bright Florida sunshine. An uplifting, joyous doc film featuring a female dance troupe with a difference: they’re 60+ and out to prove that age is just a number. Reviews at Sundance call it an "affectionate portrait" and an "engaging historical piece". This looks lovely but it also reminds me of Some Kind of Heaven.

Let’s get one thing straight: no one just casually becomes a member of the Calendar Girls, Southwestern Florida’s premier geriatric dance troupe. As founder and steam-engine leader Katherine emphasizes, the charity-based collective of women over 60 takes itself seriously, rehearsing half the year in order to perform the other half. And between the homemade unicorn headdresses, sequined leotards, and electric-blue eye makeup, some husbands just can’t handle their wives having fun.
This is the delicate balance that directors Maria Loohufvud and Love Martinsen strike in their skillful, dedicated documentary Calendar Girls. The Swedish duo celebrates their subjects with ebullient visuals one might expect from a film about a group of old ladies dancing their socks off, while gaining intimate enough access to witness the frustrations of aging. Though only going deep with select members of the group, the documentary manages to treat every Calendar Girl with the dignity...

Sundance: ‘Calendar Girls,’ Inspiring Documentary About Dance Group, Sells to Juno Films (Exclusive)

The Sundance Film Festival doesn’t kick off until next week, but that’s not slowing the dealmaking.
Juno Films has acquired North American rights to the feature-length documentary “Calendar Girls,” a look at a dance team comprised of Florida women over 60. The film will have its world premiere at this year’s festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition Category. Before Sundance went virtual due to rising Covid cases, the dance team had planned to make the trek up the mountain to Park City to perform.
Juno Films plans to release the film in theaters in the early summer.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Juno Films to bring ‘Calendar Girls’ to North American audiences,” says filmmakers Maria Loohufvud and Love Martinsen. “We believe that it will appeal to audiences across the spectrum and will prompt viewers to reconsider what it means to be ‘old.'”

In 1926, when her husband’s affair became public, Agatha Christie vanished for eleven days. This reimagining is told through the eyes of her husband’s mistress, Nan O’Dea. Agatha and Nan transform from competitors to unlikely allies while the world around them remains cloaked in the dark, unable to grasp the complexities of each woman’s relationship to her past and her female identity. Ruth Meehan's debut film is a feisty descendant of the likes of Calendar Girls, with its female strength-in-the-face-of-illness narrative that presents its similar themes of dealing with cancer while navigating friendship and loss, with a younger audience demographic in mind.
Gemma-Leah Devereux - who put in a small but notable performance as Liza Minelli in biopic Judy - brings complexity to the central character of Kate, a stand-up comedian who uses her life as a punchline for her gigs, gambles her depression medication with pals and has quite a lot of dark thoughts about death.
But Kate discovers wanting to die and suddenly being faced with the prospect are two very different things when an accident leads to a diagnosis of breast cancer and the looming challenge of a round of chemotherapy and surgery. With a wit so sharp she's in danger of cutting herself, Kate proves initially abrasive to the group of.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and in many ways, that would be British producer Suzanne Mackie. As an executive producer on “The Crown,” she has spent the better part of the past 10 years working on the hit Netflix series, taking on her share of controversy along the way. But you’d be hard pressed to find a cooler head: never mind Claire Foy or Olivia Colman, Mackie is the only queen who will see the whole show across its six seasons.
Mackie, who is this year’s recipient of Variety’s Achievement in Intl. TV Award, has shepherded the royal family period piece from the earliest seedling of an idea — pitched when the streaming giant’s eye-watering originals drive was still in its infancy, riding high on “House of Cards” — to the Golden Globe, SAG and Emmy-winning, agenda-setting hit it’s become, both for Netflix and the U.

Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”), Keeley Hawes (“Bodyguard”), Rhys Ifans (“Notting Hill”) and Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”) have joined the cast of “Misbehaviour,” alongside the previously announced Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Jessie Buckley.
Principal photography began Monday on the dramedy, based on the true story of the 1970 Miss World contest and its disruption by the newly founded Women’s Liberation Movement. The film, which will shoot in and around London over the next nine weeks, is directed by Philippa Lowthorpe (“Three Girls”) from an original script written by Rebecca Frayn (“The Lady”) with revisions by Gaby Chiappe (“Their Finest”).
The action takes place in 1970, as the Miss World competition takes place in London, hosted by Bob Hope, to be played by Kinnear. (Manville plays Dolores Hope.) At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show in the world, with more than 100 million viewers.

Uplifting movie tells how the Cornish singing group hit the big time – but not of the terrible blow that came after
Early in the new year, Fisherman’s Friends, the uplifting true story of the part-time Cornish sea shanty group that hit the big time, is coming to cinema screens amid hopes it may connect with audiences just as powerfully as other British feelgood hits such as The Full Monty and Calendar Girls.
Behind the wit, warmth and energy promised in the film, which stars Daniel Mays, James Purefoy and Tuppence Middleton, lie the stark facts of a tragedy that threatened to rob the real band of Cornish singers of their good spirits for ever.

For a film that is technically a French take on The Full Monty and Calendar Girls set in rural Normandy — Calvados Girls, anyone? — Normandie nue is surprisingly tame. But an even bigger surprise is the fact that the command of tone of popular writer-director Philippe Le Guay, who directed the hits Service Entrance (aka The Women on the 6th Floor) and Cycling With Moliere, is wobbly throughout, awkwardly oscillating between gritty and glossy and frequently occupying the rather vague middle ground where dire sociopolitical tract and crowd-pleasing comedy supposedly intersect. That said, a sprawling and motley cast that includes...
